PREVIEW -- Astral Chain (Switch)

The few survivors of a massive global disaster gather together in a futuristic megacity. Now it’s your job to protect them against otherworldly invaders–but you’re not alone as a member of a special police task force equipped with sentient armaments called Legions. In this brand-new action game from PlatinumGames, control the protagonist and a Legion simultaneously to chain stylish combos. Change Legions on the fly to vary your style and unleash a variety of abilities. The last remnants of humanity depend on you, and to save the world, you must investigate its dark side. Astral Chain launches on the Nintendo Switch on August 30th, 2019.

I have raved about anything and everything Platinum Games over the years for you guys to know that they are one of my favorite game developers, so I'm always going to have an eye on whatever they are cooking up next. Their newest title is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and launches today (Aug. 30th). The Legions remind me of what Ryoho's Alter Power summoned up in the anime, S-Cry-ed, if I'm perfectly honest. The game looks fun though. I know I won't get a chance to play it anytime soon, but it's definitely on my backlog.

I have linked the original E3 reveal trailer below.

PREVIEW -- Wonder Woman: Bloodlines

In Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, Amazon princess Diana of Themyscira chooses to save fighter pilot Steve Trevor and return him to his home in America - setting in motion one of Wonder Woman's most captivating chapters. Fulfilling the role of both ambassador as well as protector, Diana soon earns the name Wonder Woman from the gracious people of Earth. Equally strong in body, heart and will, she makes it her mission to help a troubled young girl enlisted by a deadly organization known as Villainy, Inc., whose criminal members have their sights set on invading Themyscira, Diana's paradise home.

A new Wonder Woman animated feature film has been LONG overdue. The one that I have raved about - even more so than her cinematic debut - was released back in 2009. Diana of Themyscira deserves another adventure of her own. It wouldn't kill DC Comics to take a break from the tons of Batman and/or Superman animated films to give their leading lady of the Trinity a moment to shine.

PREVIEW -- Studio Trigger's PROMARE

I've honestly kept my eye on this over the last few months in anticipation of it's release as I was wondering what Studio Trigger had up their sleeves next. This looks visually amazing in terms of presentation and style and doesn't skip a beat in terms of over-the-top animation style that Trigger is known for. I'm anxious to see how this turns out. By the way, am I crazy for thinking the main character was Kamina from Gurren Lagann for a second there?

The director of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann's first film stars Galo, a member of a rescue team that quells the flames of people who spontaneously combust called the Burnish. Combustion isn't death for all Burnish, though, and some of these mutants like Lio Fotia can control the fire to cause chaos.

Promare is the first movie from Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia) and hits theaters in the U.S. starting September 17.

PREVIEW -- Marvel's Avengers: A-Day - Black Widow vs. Taskmaster Boss Fight Gameplay

I REALLY want to get hyped for this Avengers video game, but from the piss poor character designs and lackluster narrative that sounds like it was rehashed from a much better comic book storyline, I have to admit the initial trailers for this game at E3 didn't do a thing for me. This game is going to need a massive facelift for me to remotely care to invest some hard-earned cash onto this game.

The gameplay here doesn't look bad; it just doesn't offer anything new we haven't seen before. It's highly reminiscent to Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham series, namely the Firefly boss fight that we saw in Arkham Origins. At the same time, Taskmaster seems to behave much like Deathstroke in that game in terms of counters and his attack patterns. Widow herself doesn't seem to have too many options and I could see this game getting pretty boring in no time. Crystal Dynamics have a lot of work on their hands before they change my mind about this.

For those who haven't seen the initial reveal trailer from E3, I have linked that video below.

PREVIEW -- ONE PUNCH MAN: A Hero Nobody Knows - Gamescon 2019 Gameplay Trailer

I was wondering how they were going to balance how OP Saitama was in this game and the "timer" mechanic makes perfect sense. I wasn't surprised in the least to see Tatsumaki (Terrible Tornado), Silverfang (Bang), and Atomic Samurai as playable characters. I would be more surprised if they were omitted from the initial launch of the game. Glad to see Mosquito Girl, Vaccine Man, Genos, Mumen Rider, and Fubuki (Blizzard) playable as well. I hope they have all of the new heroes that were introduced in Season Two of the anime in this as playable fighters as well.

PREVIEW -- Marvel Rising: Battle of the Bands Trailer, featuring Dove Cameron & Full Episode

I swear, Marvel Rising is Marvel HQ and Disney XD's greatest hidden secret. Next to no one knows when these episodes are going to come out consistently and they keep popping up out of the blue as these mini-movies. While they have been consistently good, ranging from the premiere to the specials on Ironheart and Ghost Spider (Spider-Gwen in the comics), I wish we would get more episodes on a regular basis. This is another episode focusing on the fan-favorite Ghost Spider, voiced by Dove Cameron, who does the vocals for the main theme of this series.

While I was watching the teaser above, I saw that this episode had already premiered two days ago, I went ahead and linked that video above from the Marvel HQ YouTube channel.

PREVIEW -- JOKER - Final Trailer

I honestly still don't know what to make of this yet. It could be the most ambitious title of the year in terms of comic book origin stories, or it could be yet another well-documented flop on DC Comics and Warner Bros.' live-action resume as of late.

I'll say this much... Phoenix definitely has a knack for that Joker laugh though.

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Three-time Oscar nominee Phoenix (“The Master,” “Walk the Line,” “Gladiator”) stars in the titular role alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “The Godfather: Part II”) as Franklin. The film also stars Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”), Frances Conroy (TV’s “American Horror Story,” Hulu’s “Castle Rock”), Marc Maron (TV’s “Maron,” “GLOW”), Bill Camp (“Red Sparrow,” “Molly’s Game”), Glenn Fleshler (TV’s “Billions,” “Barry”), Shea Whigham (“First Man,” “Kong: Skull Island”), Brett Cullen (“42,” Netflix’s “Narcos”), Douglas Hodge (“Red Sparrow,” TV’s “Penny Dreadful”) and Josh Pais (upcoming “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Going in Style”). Oscar nominee Phillips (“Borat,” “The Hangover” trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oscar-nominated writer Scott Silver (“The Fighter”), based on characters from DC. The film is produced by Phillips and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born,” “American Sniper”) under their Joint Effort banner, and Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff (“The Wolf of Wall Street”). It is executive produced by Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Aaron L. Gilbert, Joseph Garner, Richard Baratta, and Bruce Berman. Behind the scenes, Phillips is joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher (“Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “The Hangover” trilogy), production designer Mark Friedberg (“Selma,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), editor Jeff Groth (“War Dogs,” “The Hangover Part III”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (“Phantom Thread,” “The Artist”). The music is by Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”).
Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, in Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, in Association with BRON Creative, a Joint Effort Production, a Film by Todd Phillips, “Joker.” It will be in theaters nationwide October 4, 2019 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

PREVIEW -- Star Wars @ D23 -- The Mandalorian (Disney+) & The Rise of Skywalker Trailers

I'll gladly watch this over the third entry in the Abrams Star Wars trilogy. This looks AMAZING to say that this is only a TV series set in the Star Wars universe. Then the cast involved is even better. Count me in whenever this drops.

After The Last Jedi, I'm finding it VERY hard to keep caring about this trilogy. After setting up Kylo Ren and Rey as starcrossed lovers in the last film, this one seems to be pitting them at each others' throats again. (Yawns) Plus we get another tease of Rey being swayed by the Dark Side. I'll believe it when I see it. That Mary Sue is too goody two-shoes to go that route.

PREVIEW -- Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - Velkhana (Beta) & Zinogre Trailers

The Iceborne beta kicks off first on PS4 on August 30 and runs through September 1. The beta will then come to Xbox One on September 2 and run through September 4. You can see the times for each session below. If you're interested in trying it out, you're able to download the beta client now from the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store.

PS4 Beta
Start: August 30 at 12:01 AM PT
End: September 1 at 11:59 PM PT

Xbox One Beta
Start: September 2 at 12:01 AM PT
End: September 4 at 11:59 PM PT

The new beta includes all three monsters that were available to hunt in previous sessions--Great Jagras (beginner), Banbaro (intermediate) and Tigrex (expert)--as well as a new quest to hunt Velkhana, Iceborne's cover monster, for the first time. Additionally, players will be able to try out all 14 different types of weapons in the game as well as some of Iceborne's new tools, such as the Clutch Claw.

The first time you complete each quest in the beta, you'll receive a special commendation pack for the full version of Iceborne. These packs include an assortment of consumables that will help you out while exploring Hoarfrost Reach, the new arctic region that serves as the expansion's setting.

If this final trailer for the expansion's release doesn't get you excited for the launch on Sept. 6th, then I don't know what will. Zinogre has been highly requested by veteran players of the series and while I'm still a newbie to the series with World being my first Monster Hunter title, I can see why the veterans are excited. This expansion is looking to have MUCH more content than the base game did and that's a great thing.

DISCUSSION: An Audience of One - Inside the Mind of an Introvert

I was reading an introvert-centric blog this morning and really got motivated to do a post like this today, discussing my mindset as an introvert as of late. Besides, this was one way to appear that I was working on this longer than usual day of work since I have been up since 5AM this morning...

COMMUNITY

Truth be told, I man at least 3-4 different communities online. There's the main Method to Madness group on Facebook where you're probably reading this post on or was linked to here that I have a Twitter account for that I honestly don't post on as much as I should. Then there's the Let's Talk Wrestling Blog group on Facebook that spawned from my Twitter account of the same name that I'm sure most of those followers migrated back and forth from FB and Twitter from my discussions and rants on there until I merged the blog with Method to Madness for my sanity in terms of updating things. There's also my wealth of friends and associates that I have met throughout e-fedding over the years and the ones that I have ran and still do to this day. And finally, I know a few artists on DeviantArt. I honestly don't share what I post on there via my blogging efforts as I tend to host more "mature" (read: adult/NSFW) content on there - mine and those by artists that I'm a fan of. If you're interested, I'm sure you can find my handle if you know some of my much older online aliases. I've had an account on there since high school, just didn't start posting much until recently. Hey, I get it, a lot of you guys let you kids read my content so I tend to have a bit of a filter on that stuff in terms of what line to cross on here.

That being said, I do some things that are not really to my benefit as a whole as a content creator - I don't allow all of these communities to bleed each other much. It's not that I haven't tried over the years. For example, I tend to let both the folks on the MtM end of things know about stuff I'm doing for LTW and vice versa from time to time on social media. Some people will bite, others won't, but the content is there on this same Blogspot page. The same goes for when I'm streaming video games on my Twitch channel that would cater to both audiences, but that gets little to no attention either.

To be quite honest, I know that I have myself to blame for all of that as I don't ever have a set schedule in mind when I do stream and it's usually at random or on a whim in terms of hours or what day I decide on doing it. I'm even worse at adding new content across the board, not only for these various blogs but for my DeviantArt as well. I'm still working on new chapters for B3 (Bullets, Blades, and Blood) and it's spin-off(s)/side-story/companion pieces but I'm hesitant to post them as I'm still doing tweaks and I want to design all of the key players in Daz3D/Daz Studio first. Having to replace and reinstall a hard drive really set me back on that front as I have to find and redownload all of my resource files that I had acquired for that program to create 3D models. On top of that, I haven't had the time to finish extracting files from the old, damaged drive(s) and while some files can be used others I have to scrap and rebuild completely from scratch, creating another headache.

My final words are that is ok to admit you need a bit of support and encouragement from time to time. Following your dreams isn’t the easiest thing to do, in fact it might very well be the hardest thing you’ll ever do.
And you don’t have to go the journey alone.
There are many, so many, who have gone before you, and are going with you, you just need to look for them and ask, do you reckon we can do this? I do.

I'm not knocking anyone who has help but own pride is going to be the pivotal contributor whether or not I find success or I fall on my face and completely fuck up all of these creative endeavors. I don't have anyone designing graphics for me or creating a funky, cool intro theme for my channel or webpage. I do all of this shit myself in my free time. What I don't know how to do, I'm painstakingly watching tutorial videos and reading how-to guides to learn to do so. And even then, I still don't ever think what I do is good enough, especially when I look around at what my peers are doing and accomplishing for themselves.

For example, my friends over at Retro Cat Adventures are always doing something neat or having something new cooking up their sleeves. If it's not Retro himself churning out retro gaming reviews or finding the coolest or obscure stuff to post about, he's got multi-talented girlfriend with her various art projects on display from paintings, digital art, and even sculptures - some of that they've used for an original table-top game of their own design. They are always around to socialize and interact with their community with their lively Discord channel to boot. Seriously, they have something for everyone to enjoy there and they don't need me to sound like a broken record that they are doing a hell of a great job at what they do. Regardless, I still tip my hat at what Retro Cat gang is up to over on their neck of the woods.

Another example? My buddy Chris Wade has his graphic design business up and running, dubbed VISUALCRACK. He lends his artistic talents to the benefit of both graphic design and musical avenues. Hell, he even has a podcast going too. Dude's making waves on all of those fronts. I couldn't be prouder of my friend. I doubt he knows but I have recommended his work when people have asked me to do graphic design work. (Laughs) I changed majors from graphic design after the first year in college. This dude's much more qualified than me at that stuff. I still fumble my through PhotoShop to this day.

Then there's BouKan and Sn0H. Both them have built their own respective channels on YouTube and/or Twitch and has a loyal, yet faithful viewer base. BouKan is always recording something of some capacity on her YouTube channel and enlightened me of a lot of games I would like to try someday. I envy the hell out of the time she has to play through all of these various titles to 100% completion and to have time to record and edit hundreds of videos to boot. Sn0H hit Twitch Affiliate status last year and got a sponsored spot to stream at Dreamhack Atlanta earlier this year. He's also one-half of the Lazy Gamers channel on YouTube that I guest-starred on their panel at the start of the year. Two content creators that I honored to call my friends, but even better all-round good natured human beings. They've both gone out of their way to offer to help me out from time to time, but I have respectfully declined over the years. Like I keep saying, this is my grave to dig and lay in. I do't want to drag anyone down with me when they already got good things going on their own. No need for me to muddle that up.

My thoughts exactly - one of many reasons I identify more with Squall than Cloud if I'm honest.

I tried to start a community effort on Discord but I felt that project was a complete failure. I ran several communities on that in hope to connect the folks I liked interacting with on one platform but it just drew me to alienate myself from the platform completely. Twitter and Facebook are notorious about various notifications and what not, but when you're the administrator/moderator for said chat boards, it's just downright frustrating that this thing demands like 24/7 of your attention. I would go to bed and wake up to like about 200-300+ notifications on my phone from unread conversations on my servers. See, here's the difference between Discord and traditional message boards. A message board you can just read all of the threads/conversations that you missed at your leisure. Discord on the other hand, demands ALL of your attention no matter what time it is.

God, that line is misquoted horribly. It goes like this:

"If everything truly has gone nuts, then I'll believe in myself and keep fighting."

There lies the problem - I feel like I lose the sense of control of my own creation, thus that triggers my anxiety. I'm in my mid-late thirties and I have lived with anxiety for well over two decades. Situations out of my control is one of my triggers. The simple answer is learning to merely adapt as a sink-or-swim response but tell that to my brain. I have come to accept that I'm just not wired like everyone else. That concept is easy to grasp on paper but to actually do it? (Nervous laughter) Yeah, it's better said than done.

I know someone is going to be a wise ass and say "It's just the internet, get over it..." And that's the kind of insensitivity I don't tolerate. Truth be told, my anxiety got to the point where I despised even entertaining the thought of checking and managing my own servers and even checking notifications and messages. Most of you know how that ended - I deactivated all of them and haven't looked back since. I have seen how Discord has been a benefit for a lot of thriving communities, but for me, it was honestly just a pain in my ass just to micromanage when I have more than enough on my plate as is.

Maybe I should have assigned some mods to police stuff while I'm not around, but you can ask any of my e-fedding friends, I have absolutely next to no trust when it comes to trusting people to do things for me, especially when I've been stabbed in the back at almost every turn when it comes to that stuff. For example, I have some members with VERY limited staff powers on my current e-federation, but I vastly handle everything myself from writing shows, posting results, booking cards, editing/updating the roster lists, etc. I know I'm driving myself crazy and possibly to an early grave but I rather handle it myself or see things spiral out of control again like they have on numerous occasions in the past.

ONE VS. THE WORLD

There's moments where the thought that I'm ultimately wasting my life working on this stuff creeps up into the back of head. Most of the time I can push it aside and continue on with my day to day life, but rough days like the past week, it's hard to ignore. I was binge-watching the entirety of GLOW Season 3 on Netflix last weekend and it really hit home when Ruth (one of the main characters) was doubting her own path in life and wondering if she's been wasting her life up to this point, living others' dreams and not aspiring for her own. I would be lying if I don't think about that almost every time I pick up a gaming controller, flip on the TV, or do remotely anything that's not in association to what I went to college for. I mean, that's normal right? You see your friends getting married and having kids, then making career moves/changes/promotions, and despite your happiness and admiration for your friends, family, and peers' successes, you start wondering, "What the fuck am I doing with my life?"

The ironic thing about this quote is that I used to identify a lot with Heero Yuy when I was younger, but the older I get, the more I realize that I was on Zechs' path that he describes here all along.

If I'm perfectly honest with myself, I started blogging as a justification that I was putting the skills that I went to college for to good use. I have two degrees in Media Arts & Film Studies and Information Technology. I apply my critical and analytical thinking to the stuff I love in nerd culture (gaming, comics, film, etc.) and discussions on professional wrestling while using my web design knowledge on maintaining this site for those skills won't go to waste.

As much as I enjoy blogging, I can't help but be a loss on what to exactly write about more days than not. I read that piece that I linked at the start of this article and I just thought it would be a good idea to just talk from the heart, tell you guys what's going through my head. I'm an introvert - I spend a lot of time to myself as I don't really like letting too many people in. VERY few people get that privilege, but I feel comfortable enough to share tidbits in articles like this from time to time. I've done it on DeviantArt for a few weeks and stopped as I was pretty much just rambling to myself. I remember having a LiveJournal account back in college and I would chronicle everything from day to day endeavors and routines. That too I grew tired of as I felt it became a chore as I was boring myself with it. It was completely private so that's all who I was writing to - an audience of one.

Hmph, a lot of my decisions I've come to regret or have come back to bite me in the ass as of late...

I mentioned one of my anxiety triggers earlier and I have another - clingy people. I've dated some clingy women no problem over the years, but I'm talking about the people who pop up into your mentions, DMs (Direct Messages), or IMs (instant messages) literally the second you log online. That shit gets me every single F'N time, especially when I get home from a hard day of work and just want to turn on the PS4, put on my noise-cancelling headphones and not worry about a goddamn fucking thing for while escaping into the realm of video games for a few hours. But no, you can't tell people to fuck off or leave you alone, that's when you get called a jerk by the vast majority who don't understand what introverts go through on a daily basis. I have to "recharge the batteries" so to speak and take a break from being social. I'm not a social butterfly in the least. I feel bad about sneaking online at random times "invisible" just to check and respond to a few messages and pop right off as I know there's going to be a flood of messages if I did pop online normally. I get it - people care - and I appreciate and value that a lot actually. But clingy people make me feel extremely uncomfortable as if they are forcing their way through my barriers/walls of personal privacy. (Sighs) The only thing I ask is to back up a bit and let me breathe, goddammit.

When I let people in, it's baby steps, much like this blog entry, not all at once. Call me crazy or whatever but that's just how I am. That's why I'm overly cautious about respecting people's boundaries and what not as I don't want anyone to feel like I'm smothering or annoying them with my presence. I get it - people have lives outside of the Internet and have other people they rather spend their precious time with. I don't need to be in constant communication with everything under the sun in everyone's lives. That's one reason why I go out of my way NOT to check Facebook or Twitter at times. There's far too much information about people in the open.

I don't think I will ever understand having that much information about yourself in the open for the Internet can know about you more than you know about yourself, especially from all of this data collection compiling that companies like Google and your ISPs (Internet Service Providers) do on you on a regular basis. At the end of the day, I'm content with sharing with you guys and gals the cool stuff that I have come to enjoy while at the same time, getting personal with my readers on an emotional level to let you know where my head is at times.

For the few of you who have read this from start to finish, thanks for allowing me to bare my soul a bit. To the rest, thank you too for the constant reminder for the audience that I'm playing to.

PREVIEW -- MHW: Iceborne x Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds Teaser Trailer

Brave the cold of #Iceborne featuring Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds! Play as Aloy, exclusive to PlayStation.
I know that it was just a tease, but that's more than enough to get me pumped for this collaboration. Seems like we're getting one of the guns that was available in the Frozen Wilds DLC as a possible Heavy Bow Gun or Light Bow Gun exclusive weapon. If they want to make it applicable to Horizon Zero Dawn in terms of a proper homage to that game, then it should have a high elemental affinity to both fire and ice damage since those weapons were ridiculously powerful in that DLC expansion.

If Aloy's Shield Weave armor is an layered armor set I'm TOTALLY using that over my Drachen layered armor in Iceborne. God I can't wait to see what this collaboration is going to be. I feel sorry for the folks on Xbox One missing out on another Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration that's exclusive to PlayStation 4.

PREVIEW -- Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack – Official Roster Reveal Trailer

The full Kombat Pack Roster has finally been revealed! Earthrealm just got a whole lot more dangerous.

Out of all of these, Joker's character model looks the worst out of the bunch. I don't know what version of him that they are going for but damn that just looks comical to me. I'm guessing they are going for whatever the final version of what he's going to look like in the upcoming Joker live-action film starring Joaquin Phoenix at the end of his origin story.

Sindel is one of those legacy characters, much like Nightwolf and Shang Tsung, who was shocked to find out that they weren't on this game's initial base rosters, especially given their ties to the game's lore.

Spawn and T-800 surprise me the most here though as I didn't think Todd MacFarlane would agree to having that character in another fighting game anytime soon following his creations being in Soul Calibur II. I'm glad that the T-800 has Arnold's likeness though. That would have been a tragedy if it didn't. I would bank on the fact that they are delaying his release in the game until that next Terminator film drops - reminiscent of how Zod's inclusion to Injustice: Gods Among Us was postponed until after the release of Man of Steel.

On the plus side though, MK11 fans can rejoice that they have new downloadable content to look forward to for well into the early portion of 2020.

PREVIEW -- Final Fantasy VIII Remastered - Official Release Date Reveal Trailer

The mega-hit RPG, FINAL FANTASY VIII returns as FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered featuring new graphical enhancements and a whole host of options to customize your gameplay experience! Coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam on September 3, 2019.
It's no secret that out of the PSX era Final Fantasy titles, VIII is my favorite. Yes, I loved VIII much more than VII. You can fight me about that. The pacing is much better. The protagonist isn't a total liar imitating a much "cooler", yet more astounding soldier (no pun intended) in order to impress his childhood sweetheart/crush and it's much more believable love story. If I'm completely honest, I can still relate to Squall's loner attitude and resistance to getting attached to people almost twenty years after the fact. That game has had a bigger effect on me in terms of identifying with the characters in it than VII's so that's a pivotal reason why I'm still fond of this game even today.

You can pre-order the game that will be available on September 3rd for $20 with improved HD graphics and new gameplay features, including no random encounters and increased game speed (up to x3).

PREVIEW -- Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - Cell Saga Trailer

Relive the emotional roller-coaster of the Cell Saga in DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT! Starting with the ominous arrival of the Androids all the way up to the crushing intensity of the Cell Games, play through high-octane battles as Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and more! #gamescom2019

Truth be told, I don't play nor buy too many Dragon Ball Z-inspired games. I may have dabbled in the Budokai series or some of the other various DBZ-based outings throughout the years, but I haven't bought/owned a DBZ title since the PSX era of gaming. I might cave for Dragon Ball FighterZ at some point (once they finally do a deal with all of the character DLC to date), but this game is peaking my interest from the more news I keep hearing about it.

They already confirmed that a DLC side mission where Goku gets his drivers' license (based on the very same filler episode that was hilarious to watch Goku and Piccolo be forced by Chi-Chi to do this) will be part of the game as additional content and seeing this emotional journey played out of Goku's fatherhood to his would-be successor in Gohan in the Cell Saga looks like it would be a joy to play through. Too bad Gohan didn't live up to that role as Toriyama brought Goku and Vegeta back to the frontlines to deal with the next major baddie that threatened the Earth (Majin Buu) and continue to do so in Dragon Ball Super. To Gohan's credit though, he was a superb team captain for the 7th Universe during the Tournament of Power story arc.

Bandai Namco tends to deliver (most of the time anyway) on these anime-based properties, so I think this will be in good hands since it's supposed to be a story-driven single player campaign and not another arena brawler like their last few games with anime-based properties. *Cough* Jump Force *Cough*

WWE Summerslam (Aug. 11, 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

SummerSlam (2019) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their Raw, SmackDown, and 205 Live brands. It took place on August 11, 2019, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was the thirty-second event under the SummerSlam chronology and the second event to be held at this particular venue (the other being the 2004 event).

Twelve matches were contested at the event, including three on the pre-show. In the main event, Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar to win the Universal Championship for a second time. In other prominent matches, Bray Wyatt in his new "Fiend" persona defeated Finn Bálor, Charlotte Flair defeated Trish Stratus by submission, Kevin Owens defeated Shane McMahon to keep his job, Kofi Kingston fought Randy Orton to a double countout to retain the WWE Championship, and Goldberg defeated Dolph Ziggler.

Submission match for the WWE Raw Women's Championship - Becky Lynch (c) defeated Natalya

I was surprised to see that Nattie and Becky would open this PPV at 7PM as the first non-Kickoff preshow match. That being said, they both tried to make this interesting, but it ultimately came off as any dime a dozen match that you would see on RAW or SmackDown between the women. That being said, there were some good spots to come out of this submission match, including but not limited to Becky and Nattie using each others' signature submissions on each other and Nattie wrapping Becky's legs around the ropes in the corner for a top rope variation of the Sharpshooter. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have never seen that move used in that capacity before. I have to tip my hat to Nattie in that regard. Can't say that I was surprised that this ended in a losing effort for her though either.

The sooner we get this belt off Becky Lynch the better. Her character, much like her boyfriend's (Seth Rollins FYI), has gotten stale in these months following WrestleMania. It's making it painfully aware that these babyfaces were so much better in the chase for the gold rather than actually defending said prizes. The sooner Becky gets knocked off her pedestal by a worthy challenger the better. There's no knowing when or if Ronda Rousey is coming back anytime soon, so WWE has slim pickings in that regard in terms of possible opponents. Fortunately, we weren't left to wonder those options for long as the problem resolved itself the following night on RAW.

The next night on Monday Night RAW (8/12/19), Nattie reverts back to being a babyface as she cherishes the memory of this match in her hometown as a dedication to her deceased father who passed away a year ago. Cue the return of Sasha Banks, who goes heel instantly and attacks Nattie. I have been ready for a heel Sasha Banks since her initial call up from NXT, but while I'm glad that we're FINALLY getting it here, the reasoning was pretty stupid to have her ruin Nattie's emotional moment when Becky has been the one popping off the handle in all of her interviews over the weekend about who needs to step up and Sasha couldn't hang. If anything, those two should have joined forces and beat the piss out The Man. I can't complain too much though since Sasha got the job done solo.

Goldberg defeated Dolph Ziggler

This was exactly what needed to be - short and sweet. The redemption that Goldberg needed to validate himself after the embarrassment at the last Saudi show. I didn't watch that nor the previous ones so I didn't care either way, but I got my money's worth from the sheer amount of laughter I had from Ziggler's sells off the first and third Spears. Ziggler sold that shit like death. Homie would've died if Rhyno ever hit him with The Gore back in the day.

WWE United States Championship - AJ Styles (c) (with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows) def. Ricochet

I wanted to like this match, but I couldn't when I know both men are capable of so much better. Someone thought it was a good idea to ground Ricochet in terms of match psychology and strip him of what makes him fun to watch in the first place. Perfect example? Case in point below.

I honestly was surprised to see that Styles retained the title here when I thought they were going to hot potato the title back and forth. Ricochet's Nightwing-inspired gear was pretty sick though.

On Monday Night RAW the following night, it seems that WWE is moving on from Styles defending the title against Ricochet and has inserted him into a program possibly with Seth Rollins going forward. The ending moments of the show saw him get bailed out by Ricochet and a returning Braun Strowman to even the odds against The OC. There was a moment where I thought Strowman was going to lay out Ricochet and Rollins, but that didn't happen at all as WWE.com has already announced that Braun will be challenging Styles for the US title next week.

(Sighs) So much for a possible champion vs. champion match at Hell in a Cell next month then...

WWE SmackDown Women's Championship - Bayley (c) defeated Ember Moon

I felt that this was another "nothing" match - something EASILY that could have been seen on RAW or SmackDown! on a regular basis. WWE has been handling Ember Moon like absolute shit, even before her "nomination" to be Bayley's hand-picked challenger for the title. One week I'm hearing about she's mad at Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville for breaking her Nintendo Switch and on the next, I'm hearing about her losing left and right on the weeks leading up to this title match. The worst being the go-home edition of SmackDown! last week where Bayley had to come out to save Ember Moon - her Summerslam opponent no less - from RAW Women's title challenger, Natalya, being trapped in the Sharpshooter. After all of this nonsense, I hope a heel turn is in the books for Ember Moon. She showed some impressive spurts of aggression in this match that was reminiscent of her NXT run, but ultimately fell flat as it resulted in nothing but a losing effort in this match.

Kevin Owens defeated Shane McMahon
Had Owens lost, he would have quit WWE.
Elias was the special guest enforcer

Outside of the pandering to the Canadian crowd, I thought this was a nothing match. Don't get me wrong. I was glad to see KO go over Shane here, but this match overstayed it's welcome. I get they are attempting to recreate the magic of Vince McMahon vs. Steve Austin with this feud, but those two are not those two Legends in the least.

To be fair, Owens was over with this Toronto crowd, but I think the ceiling is pretty low in terms of where he can go with this knock-off Steve Austin gimmick. Even Becky Lynch is losing steam in that regard.

Charlotte Flair defeated Trish Stratus by submission

For a long time, I had considered Trish's retirement match back in 2006 at the Unforgiven PPV as the best match in her career. This match right here EASILY tops that. Trish and Charlotte told an excellent narrative here and it ended with the right woman going over.

You can throw a tantrum all you want for the nostalgia and all of that, but Trish's time is over. Besides, it's LONG overdue for her to put someone else over on the way out. This woman had the fairy tale ending in 2006, winning the Women's Championship in her hometown in her retirement match. It doesn't get any better than that in terms of a last match. Trish put up a valiant effort here, even had me convinced that she was going over at certain points of this match, especially after that Stratusfaction near-fall.

Whether we like it or not, Charlotte Flair is pegged as their golden girl and WWE's going to continue padding up her resume with the laundry list of accolades. As for Trish Stratus, she will go down in history as the best of her era with this match being a testament to that fact. She has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of walking away from this match in a losing effort. She hung with arguably the best female talent that WWE has signed right now at 40+ years old.

I have to add this much too. As good as this match was on Sunday, do yourselves a favor and watch Gail Kim vs. Tessa Blanchard from a few months ago in Impact Wrestling. Trish and Charlotte borrowed a little from this match and rightfully so as it's the better "passing on the torch" match of the two in my humble opinion.

WWE Championship - Kofi Kingston (c) vs. Randy Orton ended in a double count out

After all of the build-up for this match playing off of Orton having backstage pull back in 2009 - the same year where Orton punted the WWE Chairman's skull in and attacked his daughter in kayfabe - it felt like they were setting this match up to be 2019 version of the Triple H vs. Booker T WrestleMania 19 feud without all of the not-so-subtle racism sprinkled all over it.

As for this match, it was another match that can be easily considered a massive waste of time - with a finish that easily soured the live audience and fans watching at home even more. The finish saw both men getting counted out for what seemed like the quickest count out in company history to end the match in a draw. This resulted in the Toronto crowd chanting "Bullshit" and I absolutely don't blame them in that regard. The RKO counter to Kofi's diving cross body was incredible. Too bad that wasn't the damn finish...

As much as I'm over Kofi Kingston and this title reign, the better finish would have been him going over Orton clean here then having the rematch in Hell in a Cell to justify a rematch with a different stipulation if they want to involve Kingston's family. I personally can't buy into him getting aggressive in a "blood feud" with Orton when he's going to come out with the New Day the next damn night with a smile on his damn face and throwing goddamn pancakes in the crowd like nothing happened. I would love to know what is WWE's obsession with the smiling and dancing black wrestlers as if they can't be anything else but traveling goofs. Only exception in recent memory seems to be Bobby Lashley, but who knows where the hell he is currently.

"The Fiend" Bray Wyatt defeated Finn Bálor

I don't know what drugs you have to be on to think otherwise, but this was easily the best thing on this show PERIOD. This new gimmick/character revamp for Bray Wyatt is money. I love absolutely everything about it: the mask, the entrance, the mannerisms, and sheer ferocity in the ring. I was glad that he didn't pull a Jeff Hardy and cook up a cool new gimmick (Willow during his Impact Wrestling tenure), only to work the EXACT same way as he did without it. Finn's supposed to be taking time off for a few months and this was the best role for him going out. Once he comes back, they should have the rematch with Finn gearing up as the Demon, only for that too to be bested by The Fiend. If they want to this thing to continue catching fire, he's going to have to keep ranking up wins.

I haven't been this impressed with the debut of a new monster character in wrestling in recent memory not since "Monster" Matanza Cueto's debut in Lucha Underground. Outside of that, Kane still has the all-time best "monster" debut in wrestling.

(On my knees begging) For the love of all things holy, PLEASE don't fuck this up, WWE.

WWE Universal Championship - Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar (c) (with Paul Heyman)

I joked about it for about two weeks now that there shouldn't have been no way that Seth Rollins should have beaten Brock Lesnar unless either he showed up with a gun or drove a tank down to the ring and nuked the building after the biblical beating that Brock has given him on MULTIPLE occasions over the last few weeks. Instead, we got a really competitive match out of this and I was honestly quite surprised. I enjoyed this a hell of a lot more than their WrestleMania match earlier this year, but I was even more surprised that Rollins went over Brock clean here without any dick kicks or any other shenanigans.

I thought it was comical that Rollins could take all of this punishment and still put on a performance like this tonight. Great match, but logic went out the window before even the bell rung. The highlight of this match for me anyway was Paul Heyman's facials at ringside, ranging from absolutely beaming with pride (from the beating Brock was giving Rollins) to holding his heart in fear like Fred Sanford after every near-fall. Heyman's truly a legend at his craft. I'll never understand why WWE doesn't have more managers or at least train more in the business to fill roles like this in big matches.

Once again though, I have to pose this question: Where do we go from here? I mentioned earlier that on Monday Night RAW (8/12/19), WWE teased a title for title match between Universal Champion Seth Rollins versus United States Champion AJ Styles before The OC got involved, thus ending the match in a disqualification/no contest. Ricochet and Braun Strowman made the save for Rollins with WWE announcing shortly after the fact that Strowman will challenge Styles for the United States title while Ricochet will be competing in the 2019 revival of the King of the Ring tournament. That leaves the lingering question: What happens next with the Universal Championship? Is it going to be Brock versus Rollins again - in Hell in a Cell? I hope not as I don't want to see Brock and Rollins hot potato the title back and forth for the next few months.

PREVIEW -- Tekken 7 Season 3 Teaser + Zafina & Leroy Smith Character DLC Reveal Trailers

Tekken 7’s next season is shaping up to be a wild one. At Evo 2019, Bandai Namco revealed first details about season 3, revealing that Tekken 6’s ancient martial artist Zafina will return for Tekken 7, and that the game is getting a brand-new fighter, Leroy Smith.

There was some confusion during the live venue during the Tekken 7 finals as there was a snippet that aired off-stream that allegedly teased Solid Snake could be joining the game. That created some confusion throughout the crowd.

EVO staff had to speak up to clarify that "joke" they did.

Season 3 Incoming - Free Update Highlight

Harada is promising brand new moves for every character in the game along with the usual balance changes. At this point, I think they should give characters multiple Rage Arts and Rage Drives to spice things up even further - unless that's in the plans already. I haven't played Tekken 7 since before Geese Howard dropped, so I wouldn't have the foggiest idea on what changed or what

Returning Character: Zafina

If her ending from Tekken 6 is canon to the main storyline, then I think she has been infected by Azazel after his defeat by Jin Kazama. That would explain her new clawed arm mechanic story-wise. While I'm excited to see her return in Tekken 7, I would be lying if I said that I enjoyed fighting against her freaky playstyle. She was up there with Xiaoyu and Eddie Gordo/Christie Montiero as my most hated Tekken character match-ups.

New Character: Leroy Smith

At first glance, I thought this was going to be a trailer/reveal for Wang or RZA's character from The Man With The Iron Fists. I'm glad that it's a brand new character and a black one at that. I couldn't help not laugh at the name though. Could have been worse. He could have been named Otis... (Laughs) One of my buddies said it's Bushido Brown's daddy from The Boondocks in Tekken at Grandmaster status.

PREVIEW -- Soul Calibur VI - Cassandra Reveal, Season 2 Teaser, and Samurai Shodown Collaboration DLC Trailer

I know that I'm a late to the party regarding Cassandra's reveal as she's officially part of the game as DLC for over a week now following the finals of Evolution Championship Series 2019, but I still wanted to share the trailer along with the teasers for Season Two of Soul Calibur VI, specifically the collaboration with SNK's Samurai Shodown.

I really need to break down and buy the Season Pass at some point. I haven't played it as much as I should even though I really like the game, but Bandai Namco did a stellar job on this newest entry into the Soul Calibur series.

Glad to see someone from Samurai Shodown gets to crossover with the Soul Calibur VI. I hope this round of DLC additional fighters aren't all female though like they were for Season One.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto (Aug. 10, 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

NXT TakeOver: Toronto (2019) was a professional wrestling show and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their NXT brand. It took place on August 10, 2019, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Seven matches were contested at the event, including two taped for the following week's episode of NXT. In the main event, Adam Cole defeated Johnny Gargano in a two-out-of-three falls match to retain the NXT Championship. The undercard saw NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler, NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream and NXT Tag Team Champion Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) retain their titles.

Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) (c) def. The Undisputed Era (Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish) Tag team match for the NXT Tag Team Championship

This was easily the best match that I have seen the Street Profits compete in their entire NXT careers to date. Going into this show, I was convinced that they were dropping the titles to the Undisputed Era since they have been seen hanging around on the main roster backstage for the last few weeks now. They haven't been wrestling any matches, so I guess WWE figures that they can juggle both roles without any problems for the time being.

Montez Ford might want to look into wearing a singlet for his gear as his "odd" looking nipples are a red flag for possible steroid usage. So yeah, he might want to hide that. He's got that same look going on that Jinder Mahal had a while back. Dude's got a bigger chest than his damn wife (Bianca Belair FYI). That being said, he's easily the star of this act. The Street Profits could split up tomorrow and Ford could be EASILY pushed to the moon as a singles act with his charisma and in-ring ability. Angelo Dawkins isn't bad - it just seems like that dude is moving in slow-mo half of the time. Besides, I would like to see these guys against teams who don't have a record of excellent performances under their belt for I can truly determine whether or not they are that damn good or the former members of reDRagon along with other noteworthy NXT tag teams have been making them look better than they actually are.

There was a brawl between Matt Riddle and Killian Dane at one point of this show, but it didn't result into a full blown match between the two. Riddle got the jump on Dane for once and it ended after Dane jumped off the stage with Riddle still latched on his back with a sleeper hold applied while performing a STO on one of the poor unfortunate security guards in his wake.

Io Shirai def. Candice LeRae by technical submission

Throughout this match, I couldn't buy into the beating that Candice LeRae was on the receiving end for, especially when I have seen her take FAR worse punishment from opponents of the opposite sex. At the same time, I was not ready to see her "hulk up" like Cena or Hogan and turn around to win this thing either. Her husband does enough of that bullshit where he's kicking out of a million and one finishers and getting up for more. I don't want to see them rehash the same thing for her. I'm sure the Full Sail crowd doesn't want to either.

Heel Io going over was the right decision and I'm glad that NXT went that way, even though I thought her turn was stupid to begin with. Too bad Asuka isn't around for we could have seen that feud in NXT.

This was arguably the best match on this entire card to be quite honest.

Velveteen Dream (c) def. Pete Dunne and Roderick Strong Triple threat match for the NXT North American Championship

I popped for that trip down nostalgia lane for The Mountie's theme before this transitioned into a performance by the Toronto Raptors' dance crew to see Velveteen Dream down to the ring. We better enjoy these elaborate entrances for him now because we know that they are going to neuter that the second he gets called up. Just look at what they did to Aleister Black's entrance and Finn Balor's. I can count how many times we have seen the Demon on the main roster on one hand.

This match was a lot of fun, but ultimately, it felt like it was missing something before you could regard it as something truly phenomenal. Without a shadow of a doubt, we all know that these three men are amazing individually, but sue me for expecting a little more here. Plus, they really lost me during the finish where they telegraphed that someone was going to screw the other out of the pinfall. That was my biggest knock against this match.

Shayna Baszler (c) defeated Mia Yim by submission Singles match for the NXT Women's Championship

Without a shadow of a doubt, this was the weakest match on this card. From her tenure in Impact Wrestling as Knockouts Champion and various bouts in the indies, I know that Mia Yim possesses the ability to be a threat for Shayna's NXT Women's Championship, but she hasn't been built up as such in NXT thus far. This whole story seemed hastily put together and this match suffers as a result as Yim is setup as the one with everything to lose here.

To be fair though, I did enjoy the psychology of this match with Yim systematically wearing down Shayna's arms so she couldn't use the Clutch, but Shayna's technical savvy and experience led her to improvise by using her legs to secure the win regardless.

After another successful defense for the Queen of Spades, I pose this question - who is left for Shayna to beat or beat her? She's gone through just about every big name that they have on that roster and then some. They have to be ready to call her up to the main roster at this point. She can remain undefeated too if they want to sweeten the deal.

Adam Cole (c) defeated Johnny Gargano 2–1 Two-out-of-three falls match for the NXT Championship

I feel like a broken record when I bring up my issue with these Johnny Gargano main events on these TakeOver specials. He does FAR too much in his matches. In this case, he and Cole took the cake and then some in that regard. We already seen Adam Cole and Johnny Gargano do a Best of Three Falls match in the past and they are just recycling the same concept with different stipulations for each fall. I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking in the first fall when they blew through most of their big moves and near-falls right off the bat and turned the match into a bunch of nothing until Gargano got himself disqualified like a moron. That played into the next fall being into his favor with it being a Street Fight, but it just came off stupid to me since they kept doing more and more spots and not trying to get any pinfalls off of it. When a babyface gets himself/herself disqualified in multi-fall matches like this, it's to quickly get the next fall and even things up. Nope, that wasn't in the playbook at all here. The match quickly spiraled into doing shit just to do it until FINALLY Gargano got the fall to tie things up.

When I saw the barbwire steel cage, I honestly busted out laughing as they had it decorated like the last round/finale of Impact Wrestling's Lethal Lockdown Match, save for the Hell in a Cell style roof on the top. (Laughs) NXT ran out of early 2000s (and some current) Ring of Honor stuff to rip off and now they are moving onto Impact Wrestling's catalog. Can't say that I blame 'em at this point. Just when you thought this match was going to probably end soon, it didn't. This dragged on for what felt like an eternity as Cole and Gargano scaled the cage walls gingerly to each bring down each of the marquee weapons hanging up on display on the side of the cage walls until Gargano thought it was a wise idea to cut off a piece of barbwire (using the wire cutters that were in a bag that I'm sure the crowd was fooled into thinking had thumbtacks, broken glass, or something vile to use within). For some reason, this scared Cole up onto the platform setup on top of the cage with Gargano in pursuit. The two then shoved each other off the top and through the two tables that were setup below. Unfortunately, they only hit one of the tables (barely at that...) and Cole was the one fortunate enough to roll over onto Gargano to get the pin and retain the title.

(Laughs) I guess Johnny Failure came out to play after all.

I'm sorry, but this whole match from start to finish gets a huge "Meh" from me. After all of that and it ends with essentially a draw to (hopefully) close out this feud? In the post-match video that WWE shared on social media, Regal was raising Gargano's arm and the crowd was cheering as if this is the last time that we would see him on the black and yellow brand. If this match was his swansong, then whatever I guess, but he's got more than enough "good" to "great" performances to hold his head high about on his resume as he heads up to the main roster.

REVIEW -- Metroid: Zero Mission

Metroid: Zero Mission is a side-scrolling action-adventure video game published by Nintendo, and developed by its Research & Development 1 (R&D1) division for the Game Boy Advance. It is a remake of the 1986 game Metroid—the first installment in the Metroid video game series, and is designed to retell that entry's story with modernized gameplay. It was initially released in North America in February 2004.

Like the other titles in the series, the player controls space-faring bounty hunter Samus Aran, who travels to planet Zebes after learning that Space Pirates are experimenting with Metroids in an attempt to duplicate them and use them for their own gain. The gameplay focuses on exploration, with the player searching for power-ups that are used to reach previously inaccessible areas. The remake also features new items, additional areas, mini-bosses, difficulty levels, and a rewritten story which explores Samus's past.

Plot:

"Planet Zebes...I called this place home once, in peaceful times, long before evil haunted the caverns below. Now, I shall finally tell the tale of my first battle here.... My so-called Zero Mission." —Samus Aran

Space Pirates attack a Galactic Federation-owned space research vessel and seize samples of Metroid creatures. Dangerous floating organisms, Metroids can latch on to any organism and drain its life energy to kill it. The Space Pirates plan to replicate Metroids by exposing them to beta rays and then using them as biological weapons to destroy all living beings that oppose them. While searching for the stolen Metroids, the Galactic Federation locates the Space Pirates' base of operations on the planet Zebes. The Federation assaults the planet, but the Pirates resist, forcing the Federation to retreat. As a last resort, the Federation decides to send a lone bounty hunter to penetrate the Pirates' base and destroy Mother Brain, the mechanical life-form that controls the Space Pirates' fortress and its defenses. Considered the greatest of all bounty hunters, Samus Aran is chosen for the mission.

Samus lands on the surface of Zebes and explores the planet, traveling through the planet's caverns. She eventually comes across Kraid, an ally of the Space Pirates, and Ridley, the Space Pirates' commander, and defeats them both. Along the way, Samus finds and destroys Mother Brain. However, while Samus leaves the planet in her gunship, it is attacked by Space Pirates, causing it to crash back onto Zebes, near the Space Pirate Mothership. Exploring the Mothership, Samus eventually reaches the Ridley Robot, a robot built in the likeness of Ridley. After defeating it, Samus escapes the planet using one of the Space Pirate's shuttles, while the Mothership self-destructs.

Gameplay:

Metroid (original NES version; left), Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance; right)

Metroid: Zero Mission takes place on Planet Zebes, a large, open-ended world with areas connected by doors and elevators. The player controls Samus Aran as she travels through the planet's caverns and environments, hunting Space Pirates. Along the way, the player collects power-ups that enhance Samus's armor and weaponry, as well as grant her special abilities. These abilities allow Samus to access areas that were previously inaccessible, so that the game can be played linearly or non-linearly. For example, the player may come across underground caverns that bypass certain sections, a method termed sequence breaking. To save their progress, players can enter either Save Rooms or Samus's ship on Crateria.

As a remake of Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission's layout bears a resemblance to the original, and various power-ups and items make reappearances from previous games in the series, with similar uses, effects, and appearances. However, the game adds new items, areas, and mini-bosses, as well as a completely new area named Chozodia.

Zero Mission is the first game in the Metroid series to include a sequence in which the player controls Samus without her Power Suit. In this portion of the game, Samus is more vulnerable to damage, must crawl through ducts on her hands and knees without the help of her Morph Ball mode, and has a weak pistol that briefly stuns enemies as her only weapon. However, Samus retains all energy tanks she acquired previously.

Completion of the game unlocks an emulated version of the original Metroid game. Zero Mission also allows players to unlock the Metroid Fusion picture gallery by linking between Zero Mission and Fusion cartridges via the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable.

The Verdict:

Since I have stumbled onto the wonders of Wii Homebrew, I re-discovered this game via emulation and streamed a bit of it on my Twitch channel. So bare with me that my experience with this game is via emulation and not on it's original platform on the Game Boy Advance.

Even though the original Metroid came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), I honestly never played it or stumbled across a physical copy over the years. The first Metroid game I have ever played was Metroid II: Return of Samus on the original Game Boy, followed by it's sequel on the SNES, Super Metroid, via emulation. Despite enjoying the hell of AM2R (my review of that game can be found via the link) via PC a few years ago, I haven't played a 2D Metroid game since Fusion back when it first released in 2002. I remember that game fondly, beating it several times in study hall that year. I still regard that as the best 2D Metroid outing as while I think Super Metroid is an excellent game, I think it's extremely overrated by the hardcore Metroid fans. Fusion never overstayed it's welcome and despite being VERY linear, it was a great adventure that faithfully explored Samus' past with it's narrative - something that the controversial Metroid: The Other M ATTEMPTS to do, but fails horribly at. Zero Mission, on the other hand, uses story elements from the Japan-exclusive gamebook, Metroid: Zebes Invasion Order, to expand on the lore from the original Metroid
This game, much like Fusion that released around the same time frame, has a pretty steep difficulty curve in some sections, but then again, I never played the original Metroid on the NES, so that could be just Nintendo being faithful to the original. The post-game section of navigating through the Space Pirates' Mothership was notoriously difficult since you were stripped of Samus' Power Suit and only armed with a pistol to stun enemies. Enemies in this area can easily wear down your health to nothing with their attacks, even after you regain the Power Suit. This new challenge is turned up another notch in a sense that you are unable to regain/farm these enemies for health/ammunition for your special weapons.

Watch Zero Suit Stealth Section & Chozo Ghost Boss from xionzeros on www.twitch.tv

It felt like a cheap attempt of adding a Metal Gear Solid-esque stealth component to the gameplay but it really doesn't feel fun at all. While I applaud Nintendo for the extra/additional content, the poor stealth mechanics here felt tacked on and took a little of the joy out of what was an otherwise fun adventure. There were plenty of moments where I suffered cheap bursts of random bouts of detection that turn this section of the game into a mad dash to the next room(s) where you can find a safe spot to hide until the Space Pirates can't find you. It's a lot of unnecessary trial and error navigating through this clusterfuck of a maze that is the Space Pirates' Mothership.

Mecha Ridley's weak point is that red spot on his chest, but good luck hitting that since getting anywhere NEAR that either bounces off or you take contact damage from getting too close.

Watch Mecha Ridley & Mothership Escape + Credits from xionzeros on www.twitch.tv

Once Samus makes her way to the end of this section after regaining her Power Suit and unlocking her full powers, the final boss that you face is Mecha Ridley. Despite the fact that he goes down off at least 8-10 Super Missiles aimed at his core, this fight still felt pretty cheap to me given the fact that it doesn't take much for Mecha Ridley to wipe your E-tanks out to zero between his claw swipes, eye beams, and missile volleys. It wouldn't be that difficult if his core wasn't such a damn tiny target on his body that requires a precisely aimed shot to hit it without bouncing off the rest of his armored body. I thought Mother Brain was just as cheap earlier in the game too, if not more so from the array of Metroids you had to contend with before getting there. That last room where they trap you in there with at least 6 at once is straight up bullshit. I'm just going to put that out there right now.

Whoever conceived of this cruel joke towards the end of the game deserves a stiff kick in the nuts - REPEATEDLY.

Watch Metroid Hunting from xionzeros on www.twitch.tv

If the original Metroid was as hard as that, then I tip my hat to the folks who finished that with flying colors on the NES. I would've thrown my controller at the TV if it weren't for save states.

In terms of gameplay improvements over the original Metroid, I enjoyed the quality of life improvements over previous entries in the series as the map gave you updates of your next destination instead of sending you wondering throughout the massive game map without the faintest clue of what in the blue hell of what exactly you should be doing or looking for.

I liked that all of your beams "stack" like they did in Super Metroid as well, but I wish you could toggle abilities on/off like that game. That was allegedly a feature that was removed from the game prior to release, but can be activated via hacks/modifying the game's source code. (Sighs) What could have been, I guess. That was a highly beloved feature in Super Metroid, even to this day by the speedrunning folks.

I never knew how bare bones Samus' abilities were in the sequels until I played this entry. She had to acquire the means for ledge hanging  (Power Grip), long range firing (Long Beam), missile usage and capacity (in Metroid II, you start off with 30 missiles), and the ability to crawl into small spaces (Morph Ball) instead of having these abilities right off the bat in Metroid II: Return of Samus.

I know Super Metroid enthusiasts - or rather fanatics - will hit me for this, but I never knew how to perform a ShineSpark (and all of its variations) until I played Metroid: The Other M. That being said, I adored all of the clever uses of this ability coupled with the normal usage of the Speed Booster to collect the various hidden items tucked away on Planet Zebes. If I were to replay this game to collect all of the items for 100% item completion, it would be to explore all of those means with this ability. I had seen some of it from the numerous speedruns of this game and Fusion on GDQ (Games Done Quick) or other noteworthy speedrunners' Twitch channels, but wouldn't mind taking the time to do so myself.

I'm sure someone will correct me otherwise, but one thing that threw me off a little was that I was getting hit out of the Screw Attack in this game. If memory serves, Samus is supposed to be completely invincible during this attack, but during the Space Pirate Mothership section of the game, the Pirates were hitting me out of it left and right. I can understand the black Space Pirates showing some tolerance to it, but that just felt cheap when the normal ones were occasionally hitting me out of the animation. Back in Metroid II: Return of Samus, I vividly remember using that ability to avoid contact damage from Metroids and everything else under the sun. Once again, this was a minor gripe, but I can see why Nintendo possibly removed the i-frames of invincibility on this ability as it was a tad overpowered in that game.

Samus having some of these abilities that weren't seen until her 2nd and 3rd adventures create a bit of an inconsistency with her lore as in one of the later games, she clearly mentions that she wasn't taught how to use particular abilities until AFTER the events of this game, so it comes off as odd as trying to reconnect the events of Capcom's Maverick Hunter X (remake of the original Mega Man X) to the rest of the X series after Keiji Inafune left Capcom. In that regard, it's just best to treat this as a fun "spin" on Samus' initial adventure and not hold it too faithfully to her canonical narrative.

A part of me wished that this game let you bookmark stuff on the map like how Castlevania: Lord of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD did for further reference to aid you when backtracking with newly acquired abilities, but I had to mentally hit myself as a reminder for when this game was released. Features like that wasn't even considered back at that point in gaming, so we should be grateful that Nintendo even revamped the original Metroid title - period. Speaking of which, the original Metroid from the NES is unlocked on the main menu after you clear the game. In that regard, I found myself playing an emulator within an emulator as this was emulated within Zero Mission's ROM file. I think I played about 5 minutes of it and quickly realized that the difficulty curve on the NES original was much more brutal than what I was treated to playing Metroid II: Return of Samus on the Game Boy first. (Laughs) I definitely got the kid gloves in terms of my formal introduction to the series.

Play It or Don't Bother?

If I actually owned a Game Boy Advance, I totally would have owned this in my gaming library, but if I had a choice between this title or Metroid Fusion, the latter gets my vote any day of the week as the better of the two titles.

If you're a Metroid series fan, then this is a no-brainer to give this game a shot. Over the years, I have come to an understanding that there's a hard division between the Metroid community that either prefers Samus' 3D/first person shooter (FPS) outings with the Metroid: Prime series over her 2D sidescroller adventures, but I think there's something for both sides of the spectrum to enjoy here in terms of enjoying this remake of Samus' initial adventure. While I wasn't too crazy about the spikes in difficulty in certain portions of the game, I ultimately enjoyed playing through majority of the game as a whole. I feel like this is a respectful homage to Samus' original adventure, even though the latter portion of the game gets pretty tedious while exploring the Space Pirates' Mothership. I suppose that could be remedied for newcomers by choosing an easier difficulty setting, but that's to each player's own personal preference, of course. While this isn't one of my favorite 2D outings of Samus Aran's adventures, I still don't regret a moment of playing through this game.
