REVIEW -- Man of Steel (2013)

Man of Steel marks the return of Superman to the silver screen in the wake of Christopher Nolan's highly successful Batman trilogy. After last summer's blockbuster hit, The Avengers, Warner Brothers sought to recreate that Marvel Comics' success by creating a shared cinematic using DC Universe's own heroes with Man of Steel paving the way towards an inevitable Justice League crossover, featuring DC Comics' greatest heroes banded together much like the Avengers.

Does Man of Steel deliver or does it need to fade out of existence like the planet Krypton? Read on to find out.

The Plot: (FULL Spoilers)

The planet Krypton faces imminent destruction due to an unstable core, and its ruling council is under the threat of rebel General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his followers. Scientist Jor-El (Russel Crowe) and his wife Lara (Ayelet Zurer)  secretly imprint a genetic codex into their newborn son's Kal-El's cells and launch him on a spacecraft to Earth to preserve the Kryptonian race. After Zod murders Jor-El, he and his followers are banished to the Phantom Zone, but manage to escape when Krypton explodes. The infant Kal-El lands on Earth in Smallville, Kansas, where he is discovered by couple Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane), who name him Clark and raise him as their adopted son.

Clark's Kryptonian physiology affords him superhuman abilities on Earth. Young Clark gradually learns to hone the abilities that initially cause him confusion and discomfort. Jonathan reveals to a teenage Clark that he is an alien, and advises him to not utilize his powers publicly, fearing that society would reject him. After Jonathan's death, an adult Clark (Henry Caville) spends the next several years living a nomadic lifestyle, working different jobs under false names to cover his tracks and hide his identity. He eventually discovers a Kryptonian scout ship with technology that allows him to communicate with the consciousness of Jor-El in the form of a hologram. Lois Lane (Amy Adams), a young journalist from the Daily Planet, also discovers the ship while pursuing a story, and is rescued by Clark when she is injured. Lois's editor Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) rejects her story of a "superhuman" rescuer, so she traces Clark back to Smallville with the intention of writing an exposé. After hearing his story, she decides not to reveal his secret.

Detecting the scout ship, Zod travels to Earth where he demands that Kal-El surrender to him, or humanity will suffer the consequences. Clark agrees to surrender to the U.S. military, who hand Lois and Clark over to Zod's second-in-command, Faora (Antje Traue). Zod reveals that he intends to use a terraforming "world engine" to transform Earth into a Krypton-like planet, to eradicate the human population, and to use the codex to repopulate the planet with genetically-engineered Kryptonians. After Clark and Lois escape the ship, Clark defeats Faora and another of Zod's henchmen in Smallville, convincing the military that he is on their side. Zod deploys the world engine and initiates the terraforming in Metropolis and over the Indian Ocean.

Clark, now dubbed "Superman", stops the world engine in the Indian Ocean. The military uses the spacecraft that brought Superman to Earth in an aerial strike to create a portal that returns Zod's ship and his crew to the Phantom Zone. Only Zod remains, and he and Superman engage each other. After a battle, Superman is forced to kill Zod to save a group of innocent civilians that Zod attempts to murder. Superman decides to blend into the normal world by wearing eyeglasses and resuming his identity as Clark Kent. He is hired by White to work as a reporter for the Daily Planet.

The Verdict:

I'm in a rather good mood tonight after seeing this as I happened to get in free as I forgot I still had a gift card from my birthday for the theaters here that I have never used. Thank goodness that I didn't have to drop $12-20 on a damn film here tonight.

Anywho... For the most part Man of Steel serves as the best Superman film that has graced the silver screen in over the last two decades. Those of you who know me personally know that I have been VERY skeptical of this film since it's initial trailer last summer during The Dark Knight Rises. I am relieved to see that Zack Snyder has delivered here since not everyone did not seem to appreciate and love Sucker Punch and Watchmen as much I as did.

In terms of acting, Henry Caville (Clark Kent/Superman) really is a natural fit as Superman as Christopher Reeve was back in the original Superman films. I'm sure many female fans will be oogling him for the months to come. Amy Adams truly left her mark as Lois Lane and felt as convincing as Dana Delaney and Margot Kidder in the previous iterations of Lois Lane across media that have come to set the bar on how to play this beloved character. I felt that both Russell Crowe (Jor-El) and Michael Shannon (General Zod) stole the show. From the moment we were first treated with the spectacular visuals of the planet Krypton, Crowe and Shannon command this film with their mere presence onscreen. On a side note, I wouldn't mind seeing Crowe as a Jedi in a future Star Wars film with him pulling a Obi-Wan Kenobi/Jaga from Thundercats, as he found a way to return from grave as a ghost. Come on, I know I'm not alone in thinking that. Antje Traue delivers as Zod's second in command, Faora, who comes of just as cold, if not more bone-chillingly cold as Zod himself throughout the narrative. I hope she returns in a sequel as the main villain as she can easily fill General Zod's shoes. I am possibly in the minority here but both Jonathan and Martha Kent (Kevin Costner and Diane Lane) both came off as transparent and lacking in character as Uncle Ben and Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man reboot. Pa Kent pasted on the immortal words of wisdom a la Uncle Ben before meeting his untimely demise in a similar fashion. Unfortunately, that's all Kevin Costner was good for here - the infinite box of wisdom for the budding Man of Steel.

In terms of the film's plot it works for the most part, but it's better if we split it into two parts in sake of discussion - the Krypton-centric plot and the human element plot.

The Krypton-centric plot starts on Krypton before it blows up, centering around General Zod and Jor-El over their contrasting views on how to preserve Krypton's culture and legacy. Even though Krypton is destroyed and Jor-El along with it, Jor-El's will lives on through Kal-El/Superman. 33 years later their conflict continues as it seems like at times that Superman is literally taking a backseat in his own film. To say that Kal-El is told throughout his upbringing that he is destined to have a choice and control over his role in life, it just comes across that he is merely finishing his father's battle for him despite his parents' strives to give him a fresh start on Earth. While I understand that it would have been easier for Superman just to give Zod what he wanted, he did have a choice in that matter when he decided to take a stand for Earth and it's people.

The thing that really knocked this film out of the ballpark was that it was Superman's own choice to kill Zod at the film's finale. I'm glad that this film made this distinction to separate Superman from Batman with an act that Nolan drive home so hard in his Batman films as a line that Batman would never cross. When push came to shove, Superman killed Zod to serve the greater good. He didn't want to cross that line but he had to.

The human element plot starts with Lois Lane's discovery of the alien spacecraft, which quickly turned into a conspiracy story style investigation that led to Lois easily tracing Clark's superhuman exploits back to his hometown. Lois decides that it was for Clark's best interest to keep his secret while all of mankind hangs in the balance as Zod threatened to destroy the planet looking for him. Fortunately, he gives himself up willingly but it's strange that Zod never revealed his intentions for taking Lois hostage on board of his ship with Clark. It's not like having her would serve his purpose to restore Krypton at all. From here, it seems that Lois and Clark are instantly in a relationship just after he respected her decision to protect his secret and was the first to openly trust him. This romance just seemed really rushed and forced. Both Adams and Caville have a natural chemistry with each other onscreen but they could have introduced the romantic element in a sequel and not this early in the stage of this franchise. It seems like Snyder didn't want to give Lois and Clark's relationship no room to grow at all here. Within a single film, Lois knows Superman's secret identity AND they are already romantically involved. That's enough material to spread out across two or three films, not cram into first one.

The human element of the plot continues to cause a few more head scratching moments as Zod's terraforming machines wrecked Metropolis apart. How is the audience supposed to care about that random girl (supposedly Jimmy Olsen's sister) from the Daily Planet when we maybe have seen her like once in the film prior to the scene where it seemed as if she was going to die? The reaction from the witnesses watching Superman stop the machine was a bit idiotic as you would think for a guy with super-hearing he would have dropped what he was doing for like five seconds and saved them sooner. Apparently, no one in Metropolis and Smallville seems to care at the level of destruction that Superman's battle put across those two cities. Hell, Superman doesn't seem to care about how much damage they are causing until Zod's about to strike down those people right in front of him. I would love to see the death count in Metropolis obituaries the next day.

I know I'm going to get heat mentioning this but Pa Kent's death fell flat - HARD. Clark could have ran at normal speed and saved him without any powers. Instead, Clark and everyone one else watched the old man die without lifting a finger. It came off like he died from his own stupidity rather than trying to "protect" Clark's secret identity. I guess him and Uncle Ben can argue over who has the coolest kid who grew up to be a superhero in the afterlife.

I had to laugh that no one did not manage to do the cliched act in Superman-oriented media - bad guys empty their clips into the guy, watching the bullets bounce off only to toss the gun at him in frustration.

Last but not least, let's talk about the action sequences. Boy, this film has a LOT of action, but like Nolan's Batman films the use of extreme close-ups does not do anything for the audience as you can barely make out the action. It gets worse in the later fight sequences where Superman faces off with his fellow Kryptonians with all of the cutaway shots and exchanges of actors for their computer-generated counterparts. There are moments where these fights are a spectacle to behold, such as the finale between Zod and Superman across the ruins of Metropolis, to others where it's mess of bad CG characters ducking it out, such as Faora and Superman fighting at Smallville's local IHop diner. I still say Faora gave Superman a worse beating than Zod did and at least she didn't drop her armor off like a damn dumb ass.

On a side note, why does everyone working under Zod are wearing body armor that looks like they were trying out as extras for Gears of War? I guess everyone can't have bad ass armor like Jor-El did.

I'm still sad that director Zack Snyder (300, Sucker Punch, Watchmen) didn't find a way to squeeze this joke into Clark's childhood upbringing. I was a sad panda when they didn't manage to get that joke in there.

Hey, Pa Kent has a point. How else are you going to put fear into an invulnerable alien child?

All jokes aside, Man of Steel serves as a solid foundation for Warner Bros. to begin their own shared cinematic universe. There is no idea on where they are going from here, but if Man of Steel is any indication for the future then the sky is the limit. I'm giving this a solid 8.5 out of 10. If it wasn't for the several plot holes, such as the Krypton vs. Earth environment issue that never was explained in full detail, I would easily rate this higher. Man of Steel proves that Superman still has what it takes to deliver on the silver screen and that Batman isn't the only marketable hero underneath DC Comics' roof.

Easter Eggs:

These are some extra tidbits I noticed throughout the film that I'm sure most people possibly missed out on throughout the course of the film.

- Alessandro Juliana (Smallville’s Emil Hamilton) shared screen time with Richard Schiff (Man of Steel’s Emil Hamilton). Alessandro was the soldier (Officer Sekowsky) who was explaining that the ice surrounding the wrecked Kryptonian scoutship was at least 20,000 years old.

The actor playing Jax-Ur, Gen. Zod’s medical officer (Mackenzie Gray) also played the role of Lex Luthor’s clone in Smallville.

There is a “Wayne Enterprise” logo on the satellite that is destroyed during the space portion of Superman and Zod’s battle. It is the exact logo used from Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

During the battle in Metropolis, there is a light up sign that when zoomed in on says “Blaze Comics”. Shout out to Booster Gold fans.

Two scenes where the Lex Corp logo can be scene.

While investigating the inside of the wrecked Kryptonian scoutship, Clark finds an open resting chamber (Think stasis tube). In the prequel comic to Man of Steel, it is possible that the resting chamber may have belonged to Kara Zor-El (Supergirl).

REVIEW -- Lollipop Chainsaw

With E3 on the horizon as I'm sure Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufactures are going to show off some new footage of Killer Is Dead this coming week, I decided to spend the last weekend plowing through latest entry in the slew of crazy and chaotic games from the mind of Suda51, Lollipop Chainsaw. For those who are familiar with Suda51's work, he is the mind behind the cult favorite No More Heroes series, the Wii exclusive Killer7, and the joint-partnership creation of Shadows of the Damned with former Capcom employee, Shinji Mikami (mastermind behind most of the earlier Resident Evil games and the original Devil May Cry) - just to name a few.

The Plot: (FULL Spoilers)

On Juliet Starling's (voiced by Tara Strong in English and Eri Kitamura/Yōko Hikasa in Japanese) eighteenth birthday, she goes to San Romero High School park to meet her boyfriend, Nick Carlyle (voiced by Michael Rosenbaum in English and Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese) who is going to meet her family for the first time.

Unfortunately, a zombie outbreak has occurred, which leads to Juliet fighting off hordes of Undead on her way to meet Nick. When she arrives, she discovers Nick fighting off a zombie which was trying to eat her, and so Nick is bitten in her place. Realizing he will become a zombie, Juliet decides she must decapitate him to save him.

When he comes to, Nick discovers he is somehow still alive, despite being a severed head, and so Juliet reveals to him that she is a zombie hunter, and that she performed a magical ritual on him which keeps his soul from being turned into a zombie and retaining his humanity, thus explaining his continued existence as a severed head. Juliet attaches Nick's head to her belt, and she fights hordes of zombies on her way to meet her tutor, Morikawa (voiced by Keone Young). Once they are united, Morikawa explains the situation, and explains that the Universe is divided into three realms: Earth, the Land Beyond Words, and the Rotten World, an infernal realm where demons and zombies reside. Morikawa tells Juliet and Nick that somebody has cracked open a portal between Earth and the Rotten World by a combination of black magic and explosives, and Morikawa sets out to find the culprit.

Juliet reunites again with Morikawa after fighting zombies intent on blowing her to oblivion, and finds the person responsible for the outbreak, an evil goth named Swan (voiced by Sean Gunn in English and Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese) but she cannot prevent him from summoning five demons to the world, which take the form of zombies centered around themes of rock and roll. Morikawa attempts to stop Swan from unleashing the demons, but he is mortally wounded.

Swan sends the first zombie overlord, Zed, after her, but she kills him in a fight and sends him back to the Rotten World. Morikawa tells her to purify the school and kill the four remaining zombie overlords before dying. Juliet hunts down the overlords, while receiving advice from her sisters Cordelia Starling (voiced by Linda Cardellini in English and Mayumi Asano in Japanese), the elder one, and Rosalind Starling (voiced by Kimberly Brooks in English and Mariya Ise in Japanese), the younger sister. Juliet continues exploring the school and fighting zombies, and encounters Vikke, the second zombie overlord summoned by Swan, whom she duels onboard his airborne longship and sends him back to Rotten World. The longship crashes into the O'Bannon Farm. Juliet is attacked mentally by nightmares projected from Mariska (voiced by Shawnee Smith), the zombie Queen of Psychedelia, but Juliet eventually shakes off the nightmares and faces Mariska herself, defeating her and sending her back to Rotten World. Juliet's father, Gideon, arrives and takes her back to the city, where Juliet, Nick and Gideon infiltrate the Fulci Fun Center upon realizing it is full of gamer zombies. Josey, the zombie overlord in charge of the center, summons Juliet to his lair atop the building, and in a duel, Juliet also defeats him. Finally with one zombie overlord left, Juliet's family all team up to infiltrate an unfinished Cathedral in the heart of the city, where the final overlord, Lewis Legend, lurks. Upon accessing his lair, Swan taunts Juliet about Lewis being more than a match for her; ultimately, though, the situation is reversed. Just like all the other overlords upon their deaths, Lewis utters a Latin chant.

Swan appears and applauds Juliet for her work and reveals the cruel fact that she was a pawn in his game, and he allowed all the zombie overlords to die so the true zombie lord could be returned to this world. Swan also tells Juliet that it was she, and all the other students at the school, that made him into a monster through torture and bullying. (However, the flashbacks shown imply that Swan might have had feelings for Juliet and that her relationship with Nick pushed him further over the edge.)

Essentially, the zombie outbreak was his act of vengeance against the school's students, and society in general for making him an outcast. Juliet tries to reason with him, but Swan, indifferent towards any attempt to get him to see the error of his ways, shoots his head off to finish the ritual and is absorbed along with the rest of the Undead into a black vortex, which solidifies into the zombie of all zombies: Killabilly, whom Juliet is forced to fight.

Juliet battles Killabilly and is contacted by the ghost of Morikawa, who gives her advice along with Nick. Halfway through the fight, Juliet's father, Gideon, drives his motorcycle packed with explosives into the maw of Killabilly, and is seemingly destroyed. Juliet mourns her father, but Nick and Morikawa encourage her to enter the mouth of Killabilly before he regenerates. Juliet complies and lands in the demon's stomach, where, in his heart, she encounters Swan's headless corpse. She learns she must put Nick's head on top of Swan's body to make Killabilly explode into nothing, and tearfully does so after expressing her love for Nick.

Nick tells her he loves her, and sacrifices himself for humanity. Killabilly explodes, and in a near-death experience Nick learns from Morikawa's ghost that it has been decided Nick's honour grants him new life, with a new body, but there will be a "mix-up" on the resurrection. Nick learns this means he gets Morikawa's body, which is far shorter than his previous one, but neither he nor Juliet really care.

Eventually, it is revealed Gideon, Juliet's father, did survive the explosion, and together the Starling family make their way home in return for Juliet's birthday, which can be a positive or negative experience depending on how the game has been played.

Should the player save all available people during the course of the game, Juliet's birthday will go swimmingly and Nick will present his present of a box of luxury lollipops to Juliet. If the player allows one or more people to die, however, Juliet's mother will act strangely and turn around to reveal she has been zombified. -- via Wikipedia

I don't think this is what that zombie had in mind
when he wanted some penetration...
Gameplay:

Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack and slash video game in which players play as Juliet as she fights through hordes of zombies. Juliet can use melee attack, dodges and execute high and low attacks with her chainsaw. Zombies can be beaten into a groggy state, during which they can instantly be killed with a chainsaw attack. Gold medals can be earned by defeating zombies, smashing objects and rescuing classmates. These medals can be spent at Chop2Shop.zom stores found throughout each level where Juliet can purchase new moves and combos, as well as items that can increase her stats. Sparkle Hunting is achieved when Juliet kills three or more zombies simultaneously or in quick succession and rewards platinum medals that can be spent on other goodies such as unlockable costumes, music and artwork.

As the game progresses, Juliet will also receive the Chainsaw Dash, which allows her to charge with her chainsaw and fly off ramps, and the Chainsaw Blaster, a long range weapon used for blasting enemies and obstacles. Throughout the game, Juliet can also collect lollipops which allow her to recover health. The maximum number of lollipops Juliet can hold depends on the difficulty setting. Juliet will die if she loses all her health or fails certain scenarios, though in the case of the former, Juliet may be able to come back to life by successfully winning a roulette spin.

Throughout her journey, Juliet is accompanied by her boyfriend, Nick, who is a disembodied head hanging from her waist. At certain points in the game, Nick's head can be attached to a decapitated zombie's body, during which the player will rhythmically press buttons in order to have him move about and clear the way for Juliet. By obtaining 'Nick Tickets', Juliet can activate the 'Nick Roulette' in which various moves can be performed using Nick's head, such as a bombarding attack or making masses of zombies groggy. By filling up her star meter by defeating zombies, Juliet can activate a special state which powers up her chainsaw for a limited period, allowing her to easily defeat zombies and obtain Sparkle Hunting more easily. --via Wikipedia

The Verdict:

Goddammit, Suda51, you just had to make another crazy game. That being said, this is going to a tough  cookie to review.

Going into this game, I thought this would be another one of those titles that I would add to my gaming collection that I'm personally embarrassed to admit publicly that I own or have played, including both Rumble Roses games, Onechanbara, and Bayonetta to name a few. But unlike Onechanbara, I didn't take the game back to Blockbuster after less than a hour of playing, I actually finished this game.

What? Don't look at me like that for trying Onechanbara. I was curious, dammit!

Let's start off by talking about some of the things this game doesn't quite get right.

First and foremost - the damn god-awful camera angles in closed-in areas. In several sections of the game, Juliet is forced to rely on the Chainsaw Blaster to deal with foes from a distance. It works fine until the camera starts shaking around when enemies begin to swarm around you up close, making it hard to keep a clear shot of your target.

Second, the lack of depth in combat. Starting the game off, it's a bit underwhelming as Juliet's combat options are severely limited. As you progress through the game, she manages to acquire a formidable arsenal after Juliet receives all of her birthday presents. If you are a fan of the average over-the-top action games, you may be a bit disappointed here on the lack of options and depth in terms of Juliet's combat ability. I found myself relying on the chainsaw-oriented heavy attacks over the silly pom-pom light attacks, which are recommended for stunning your opponents, but I had little issues relying entirely on primarily heavy attacks while tossing in a few dropkicks and evades on bigger mobs of enemies throughout the entire game. The flying enemies and the "stronger" zombie types don't switch up the strategy on combat enough to make it more different as you're essentially just dealing dropkicks to stun your opponents then using either heavy attacks or the Chainsaw Blaster to finish them off. For bosses, the strategy doesn't change up much either as you can easily rely on evades and heavy attacks to take them down with little life lost to Juliet at all. While all of the bosses sported some cool designs, I was very disappointed that they didn't live up to the hype.

In terms of story, that's where this game really shines. You can definitely tell the influences from both James Gunn and Suda51, while Tara Strong and Michael Rosenbaum's chemistry together as Juliet and Nick works  naturally from the start of the game to the finish. Sure, some of Nick's jokes fall flat and there are some times where I wish Juliet would shut the fuck up - like how she has to say "Chainsaw Blaster!" every time you use it, but it's well worth the laughs. The story is pretty basic, but it will make you laugh around every corner from every pop culture, adult humor, or zombie outbreak film reference that you can catch. Not many video games can make me laugh this much while playing.

This game sports one feature that I wish more action games had - a customizable soundtrack/playlist. You can mix and match your favorite tracks from the game and set them up as your own playlist during gameplay. The last game I can fondly remember having a feature like this was Def Jam Fight For New York and NBA Street Vol. 2. I don't know about you guys, but I would like to customize the soundtrack I kick some serious ass to. That would be a welcome addition to any next generation over-the-top action title's list of features.

One thing I don't get is why they left out the Valentine's Edition outside of Japan? That's as fucked up as the Climax Edition of Bayonetta being limited only to that country. This game happens to be Grasshopper Manufacture's highest selling game this generation, so you would think they would want to give fans more of what they like...

Lollipop Chainsaw: Valentine's Day Edition...
Sorry, you won't be seeing this unless you import it
from Japan, folks.
Oh well... back on topic.

Most players will finish this on Normal in roughly no time from how easy the campaign is from start to finish in no less than about 6 to 8 hours. There is a bit of replayability across the different difficulty settings while players and achievement hunters can strive to find all of the hidden lollipops and "special" zombies (those with names above their heads), max out all of Juliet's stats, purchase all of her combat skills, MP3s (for the Playlist feature), and alternate costumes from ChopShop.Zom. There's also two different endings, depending on whether or not you have saved all of Juliet's classmates. If you ask me, those individuals offer some of the funniest dialogue in the game upon rescuing them.

The unlockable costumes are pretty sweet (they are NOT DLC - all unlockable in-game) as there's some from some popular gory or zombie-related animes, such as costumes from popular characters in High School of the Dead and Deadman Wonderland. Other costumes involve some alternates that allow Juilet to dress up as her siblings or swimwear for those perverts out there. There was also an Ash from Evil Dead costume, but that was limited only to pre-orders. I don't think they ever released that outside of pre-order exclusives.

For those of you guys out there who are afraid to play this game just because the protagonist is female, grow the fuck up and give this a shot. Those of you reading this review may laugh but we are in 2013 and yet we still have people who call themselves gamers and are afraid to experience gaming from every possible perspective.

This definitely isn't No More Heroes, but it's definitely well worth the ride from start to finish if you're a Suda51 fan or just a fan of bad ass chicks killing zombies. I'm giving this a 7.5 out of 10. If it wasn't so incredibly short and had a bit more depth on the combat system I would have easily rated this game higher.

Definitely pick this up if you can find it for $15 or lower. Anything higher is a complete rip-off for such a short campaign as I can see why those who originally bought the game for $59.99 at launch were pissed.

OPINION -- E3 2013 Day 3: Gameplay Videos Galore!

Whew, this week is flying by like a blur. Much like yesterday, there's not much "new" to talk about but we still have enough speculation and clarifications to talk about. Day 3 of E3 coverage has been mostly about showing off gameplay footage for most of the newly announced games for next gen consoles.

First things first, let's talk about last night's topic that seems to be blowing up around the Internet over the last 24 hours.

Microsoft's rep says, "Stick with the Xbox 360 if you can't deal with the Xbox One's online requirements."

Microsoft's Don Mattrick clearly states in an interview before Microsoft's conference on Monday that if players have an issue with the Xbox One being always online to "stick with the Xbox 360" if you prefer to have an offline device. While I agree with the majority opinion that this was an asinine and pretty damn arrogant statement to make prior at the start of E3 week, especially when you are looking to draw as many consumers as possible to your new product, but at the same time, people are blowing this WAY out of proportion, much like the rest of the news from this week so far.

While Microsoft are essentially telling you to go buy a PlayStation 4, there is no doubt that their loyalists will not be fazed by this statement. Everyone else seems to be using this statement to fuel their hatred and the catalyst to make them jump ship towards the PS4.

That's all well and good but this guy does have a point:

"You realize that if you lost power.. You can’t play your offline ps4 either.

If you travel. Most hotels have complimentary wifi. Besides the amount of people who travel with their systems is probably not a large number.

And love it or hate it. But the check in serves a point.

All discs must be downloaded to the HDD (granted they could have not made that mandatory and fixed this issue but they didn’t)

This means that theoretically you could install the disc, and then give the disc to someone else while continuing to play that game. The check in is there so that if you get rid of your disc, they can make sure you still aren’t playing it.

It makes perfect sense.

If you don’t understand that. Or don’t like that.. then don’t buy it.

I for one love the idea because I no longer have to store my collection of dusty disc cases everywhere. Or search through mounds of cases hoping to find an interesting game to play or to find that rogue disc that somehow ended up in the wrong case.

Also my kids are rough with my discs. Countless amounts of discs I have had to buff out or completely replace due to improper handling by my children. So this saves me that hassle.

No instead I get to scroll through my available games in an organized digital library.

All in all. I’m not stating that you have to like the concept. If you don’t like it then get the ps4! Its a great system as well!

I just know that for me. When weighing the pros and cons= I have no complaint with the xbox one.

I will probably end up with both consoles so that I can play all the exclusives anyways." -- via Jimmy Stininger

There you have it, folks. Something to think about.

To be honest, I like his idea - own both and be able to play everything I want without flaming the other side of the fence when I can't play exclusives. There's enough hate going around already in the FGC about Killer Instinct being a Xbox One exclusive that it disgusts me deeply.

Xbox One's Terms of Service Prevent Case-Action Lawsuits

Gamespot: "By agreeing to the Xbox One terms of service, consumers will waive their right to launch a class-action lawsuit against the company, Microsoft has confirmed.

"Terms include binding arbitration with class-action waiver to resolve disputes," a new Xbox One policy document reads.

Microsoft originally updated its Xbox Live terms of service in October 2011 to forbid class-action suits. Today's news is confirmation that the policy will remain in place going forward.

Microsoft is not the only major game maker to forbid class-action lawsuits. Sony's PlayStation terms of service restrict gamers from suing the company en masse, while Valve also blocks class-action suits.

It is unclear if Sony has updated its terms of service with the PlayStation 4 launching this year. A company representative had not responded to a request for comment."

I saw one of my friends link this on Facebook and naturally I read this article. Big freaking deal.

Sony is already in the lead in this console war, so why is everyone looking for everything and anything negative-related to Microsoft?

If you don't like the Xbox One then DON'T BUY IT!

End of story.

To be honest, you lose cool points from me in the first place if you take anything Gamespot and Kotaku say as pure fact. Those guys are pretty much the nerd culture equivalent of the National Inquirer or any other major news tabloid, spilling out bullshit just because the average toolbox will read it and consider it to be fact.

The PlayStation 4 is Region-Free

I find it pretty hard to believe that I have many friends who own a PlayStation 3 and don't take advantage of this simple, yet easy to overlook feature. Do you guys know how many import games I could be playing on PS3 if I had that console like you guys?? Without regional locking, PlayStation owners can play any country's version of PlayStation 3 or 4's games without consequence. Oh, your favorite game isn't going to release to your country? Okay, I'll import the international version and enjoy it just like everyone else.

Seriously though, Sony's Japanese market LOVES this feature for the PlayStation 3, so it's no surprise that this is not going to change for the PlayStation 4.

Sony is Leaving DRM to the Developers

I have some bad news for you guys thinking that you are getting away from DRM by choosing the PlayStation 4. Sony is leaving that up to the developers. So if you think for one second that greedy developers and publishers like EA won't slap that paywall in your face before you can play that shiny new used game, then think again. It didn't stop EA from charging people for the Cerberus Network on used copies of Mass Effect 2, what's going to stop them (or any other company for that matter) from doing it on next gen, even though they have openly stated that they are doing away with their online pass practices. As much as Ubisoft watches people and shoves that UPlay stuff down your throat for almost every game they release, I would not be surprised if they are the first to start charging a fee for used games. With all of their annual releases with Assassins' Creed and the everlasting source of Tom Clancy games, it would not be hard to imagine that they would want to make a profit off your used games.

New Reveals:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (Xbox 360 & PS3) and Deus Ex: The Fall (Mobile)

Boy, I gotta feel bad for Nintendo. They can't keep their so-called exclusives long at all. First it was Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge now this. I might actually pick up this version for my collection if it comes with all of the DLC content from the original.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns

I played and finished Final Fantasy XIII and was personally satisfied with the story ending there. Then comes  XIII-2 and almost everyone I know who bought that game didn't even dare nor attempted to finish XIII prior to picking up the sequel. I decided not to pick it up at all and I honestly seriously doubt I will try this one, even though I did like Lightning as a protagonist, but Fang was the coolest character to come out of XIII if you ask me. Plus, if I'm honest, I think Lightning wouldn't be so damn moody if she was getting laid or in a relationship like her sister was. Oh boy, I could go on with how I thought XIII's cast were a bunch of pedophiles, but again, that's a story for another day...

Okay, okay. One more thing to add about XIII - you had to be retarded if you didn't get that Fang and Vanille were in a lesbian romance. It was written all over their faces. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way in the least, but the sheer amount of people who don't see that amazes me.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Welcomes General Zod to the roster

If you have seen the leaked list over a month ago and in my review of the game, then this is NO surprise here. If I bought that Season Pass, I would be so mad right now if I were you guys...

I hope you guys are looking forward to purchasing that second Season Pass just to play as Sub-Zero, Red Hood (Jason Todd), Power Girl, and Martian Manhunter. At this rate, those leaked rumors are really looking like reality.

General Zod was revealed tonight on Conan's talkshow in a segment called the "Clueless Gamer" where they review the game. Conan also confirmed that his own comic book hero, "The Flaming C" will be a future DLC costume for Superman. General Zod will be available for purchase sometime in July.

Conan's "The Flaming C"

Massive New Details for Pokemon X | Y

Complete breakdown of yesterday's trailer along with some new information for those interested.

Gameplay Presentations:

Batman: Arkham Origins (Multi-Platform)

WB Montreal seems to have a lot of gameplay footage to go around for E3. I guess that's a good thing since they want to restore players' faith in this prequel even though Rocksteady aren't behind this one. I'm still not pre-ordering nor buying at launch as every single one of these games re-release a few months later with a Game of the Year edition with all of the DLC bundled together for a same damn price. I will not deny that it's shaping up nicely so far, but I'm going to rent this first before buying.

Batman Meets Bane & The Joker

I wonder how many uses or how frequently you can use the new Remote Claw. As it stands that gadget seems pretty overpowered. I hope they don't give you that too early in the game as I can see that gadget making the rest the game a cakewalk in comparison.

Bane's back in this one? (Yawns) Meh, whatever... The Joker too? Not like we didn't see that one coming...

14 Min. Gameplay Demo

Not even a mere two minutes in, I saw what I wanted to see change from Arkham Asylum to Arkham City in terms of combat. The BatClaw can be used without delay in combat without that huge recovery. It came out fast and fluid. Didn't slow Bats at all in combat. The new armored thug seems like an evolution of the Lieutenants in Arkham City and I doubt they will change combat that much. It's still the usual plan -Super Cape stun then deliver a beatdown to break their armor. I was hoping for a new special takedown or something original to take care of these guys. Who knows, maybe they will deliver on that part with the new skill tree.

Ugh... I'd kill to be one of their gameplay playtesters and give them feedback on what keep or change in these games for the better.

I'm shocked to see Anarchy in this game, as it was looking like the average cookie cutter Batman game whereas we fight the same few rogues from the last two games.

The new Detective Mode looks cool, but I would like to suggest an improvement. As a handicap to punish those players who love to just walk around the ENTIRE game in Detective Mode, put a time limit on how long you can use it. Maybe a few seconds before it has to recharge since Bats is younger and not really up to date on his technology yet.

Bayonetta 2 (Wii U)

For those who care about frame speed this is running at 60fps, according to Platinum Games' blog.

The touchscreen controls look like Easy Mode/Easy Auto for those who are not that seasoned in these type of games, but want to give it a fair shot. Like I mentioned yesterday, I'm still positive that this will be ported over to the other platforms. I know a LOT of people are still pissed at Platinum Games for making this an exclusive to the Wii U, but c'mon give Nintendo their moment in the sun. It's not that often they have a M-rated game on their console to begin with.

Beyond: Two Souls (PS3 & PS4)

Thank you, Sony. A bit more clarity on this damn game. The trailer during their conference made it look like this was going to be like Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell. Now that we got a bit more information here, it doesn't look like a clusterfuck of a narrative.

Bloodmasque (Mobile)

This hack and slash game comes from Square Enix and allows you to take photos of your face to personalize your vampire slayer in-game as you slaughter masses of vampires from France. Yeah, you read that right.

Call of Duty: Ghosts (Multi-Platform)

You guys already know whether or not you're going to get this or not before you even saw this footage. I will admit the gameplay with the dog looks pretty sweet. I'm glad I don't have to buy this as my older brother is already sold on purchasing it.

Destiny (PS3 & PS4)

I have to agree with the IGN guys here. This looks almost TOO much like Borderlands. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but sheesh, how do you guys tell all of these FPS games apart?

DuckTales Remastered (XBLA/PSN)

(Hums DuckTales cartoon theme) Yeah, I'm more likely going to pick this up, but in the meantime, I need to replay the NES original a few times to blow off the ring rust.

Infamous: Second Son (PS4)

The new protagonist's powers look a lot more bad ass than Cole's in the previous iterations. What is up with so many next generation games going with the "fucked up" future or "rise up against the government" hippy themes? That's starting to annoy me with this trend.

Killer Is Dead (Multi-Platform - set to release this summer)

You guys know that I'm a HUGE Suda51 mark, the mastermind behind the No More Heroes series, Shadows of the Damned, Killer7, and Lollipop Chainsaw. Well, here's his latest creation, Killer Is Dead.

E3 Trailer

Gameplay Demo

I already knew I was sold onto this game prior to E3 since my copy is still pre-ordered at Gamestop since the first reveal trailer back in 2012... This was just icing on the cake.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Multi-Platform)

I'm glad that LEGO could get all of Marvel's properties underneath a single roof even though their cinematic properties cannot manage to do that. This should be fun for all ages for sure.

LocoCycle (Xbox One)

Just looking at this in action, I can tell this is some crazy shit that I could see myself playing and having a blast with. I'm totally going to keep an eye out on this one.

Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Nintendo knows this is going to sell like hotcakes without a shadow of a doubt. I mean really, who doesn't like Mario Kart?

Quantum Break (Xbox One)

I totally forgot to mention this during Microsoft's press conference. I apologize for taking two days to realize that. If you can freeze and alter time like this trailer shows, then I'm sold on this concept.

Saints' Row IV (Multi-Platform)

I don't know if you guys know this or not, but don't believe for a second that this is a brand new game. This was original set to be the last DLC pack for Saints Row 3, but when THQ went under, they decided to strap that plan and use this to rack in more cash as a stand-alone game.

The superpowers concept sounds cool and all, but if I want to have superpowers in an open world game, aren't there at least 10 other alternatives to this? Still, I'll prolly end up renting this like the last one to see if it's my cup of tea or not.

The Wonderful 101 (Wii U)

Much like Bayonetta 2, I can't see this staying as a Wii U exclusive for long. It looks like a blast to play. It reminds of Pikmin but you have a mob of superheroes at your command instead of those things that look like they should go on top of a salad.

Titanfall (Multi-Platform)

I'm a bit relieved that Titanfall isn't a Xbox One exclusive, but I'm still pumped to give this a shot in either case. Is it bad that I'm dreaming of these guys getting with the folks who has the Gundam anime license for games and get a good shooter of that going?

OPINION -- E3 2013 Day 2 Coverage: Nintendo & Clarity on Monday Announcements

It hasn't even been a complete 24 hours yet and the Internet is still blowing up from the backlash of yesterday's events.

Sony has definitely taking the lead in this next generation console war as both Sony faithfuls and even Xbox 360 enthusiasts are pretty much sold on the PlayStation 4 after last night's press event. I won't deny that I'm more likely going to get a PlayStation 4 over a Xbox One, but I still will not rule out getting a Xbox One in the future.

But ZX, what about the always online and DRM... blah blah no freedom and invasion of privacy blah blah...? I could easily give you guys a lecture on this falsehood in beliefs of so-called "freedoms" here in the United States, whereas your only real two freedoms are your imagination and individuality (irony being that a lot people give both of those up without a fight at all...) but that's a topic for another day...

For now, just consider this. If you have the time to always be online complaining and whining about stuff on Twitter and Facebook, then you have time to have time for an always online console. Hell, you already do so with your mobile devices and tablets, what makes you think that consoles aren't looking to take that step? As for the so-called invasion of privacy, the Kinect can be turned off completely and Microsoft has stated that users will have FULL configuration of the device on what it records from audibly and visually. The irony of these complaints are from the same people I notice on Facebook who are the same toolboxes who post a million personal photos on Facebook and you dare to complain about privacy. Wake-up call - NOTHING you post online is private, especially not on Facebook. I can hotlink to any photo on that site without needing an account to share to another person. My friends, stop being so damn naive and superficial.

There is a LOT of talk from players saying that Microsoft needs to simply revoke their policies with the Xbox One, but at this stage, that's just foolish to think that way. I think people are not seeing the big picture here. I have been reading a LOT of comments across several websites and forums, including Kotaku, IGN, NEOGAF, and other message boards. I think this user, really hit the nail on the head on this situation concerning some feedback saying how Microsoft should change their business plan for their own "benefit" like Sony:

"NONE of it is for Microsoft's advantage. Microsoft is just the face of the console that is selling you games. They are being the bad cop so that developers can be the good cops. It's all about how much money developers make. There is a reason iOS and Steam are flourishing— low piracy and high DRM. Developers make as much from selling a license for $18 as they do for printing a disc and selling it for $60. 70% of their revenue is lost between printing a disc and allowing Gamestop to siphon off millions. More money to developers means more games and more development teams, which means happier gamers in the long run. It also means that developers can afford to sell their games at Steam prices on occasion and still make a hefty profit." -- via lilgamerman

This kid knows what he's talking about. Developers have been looking for a way to kill off Gamestop (and the used game market) completely since the PlayStation 2/original Xbox/Gamecube era as they are constantly cutting into their profits on sales for video games. Essentially, Microsoft is doing them a favor by taking the heat and all of the bad press that goes along with it for the developers can get more money back for their endeavors. And for the most part, PC gamers shouldn't be complaining at all as it's the roughly same deal with them when they buy a game. You buy a game whereas you're essentially just buying a product key. If you give your game to someone else, they have to purchase their own product key if they want to experience everything the title in question has to offer.

Okay, okay, rant over -- for now...

Let's move onto Nintendo's press conference....

Nintendo Direct

Pokemon X | Y

I could sit here and try make sense of all of these new features and what-not, even though I haven't played a new Pokemon game in well over a decade, I'll just let you guys read the details first hand from the folks at IGN.

On a side note, it took the developers over ten years to get the idea that Dragon-type Pokemon are overpowered? Sheesh, and people complain about Capcom not getting the idea... Last I checked, I thought they were weak to Ice attacks. Ice Beam from my Blastoise worked fine way back in Pokemon Red | Blue. I guess they are finally giving Jigglypuff and the other "cutie-pie" Pokemon a legit use now.

Super Mario 3D World

As much fun as my siblings, nieces, nephews, and I have playing New Super Mario Bros. during family get-togethers, I can imagine us having just as much fun playing this. Even more awesome is the fact that Nintendo turned the clock back and modeled this new entry after Super Mario Bros. 2 from the NES but with Super Mario 3D's bells and whistles.

Mario Kart 8

Call your friends and get those turtle shells ready, Mario Kart is back, bitches!

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (Wii U)

The Wii got The Legend of Zelda: Master Quest and Ocarina of Time as HD remakes. The Wii U is getting Wind Waker. Now let's see if more people give this one a fair chance now that time has passed.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Arguably the best Zelda game in the series, A Link To The Past, is getting a pseudo-sequel in the form of this game for the 3DS. Is it just me, but the 3DS is getting MUCH better games regularly than the Wii U does?

Super Smash Bros. (Wii U)

If you keep up regularly with fighting game news, then this announcement was no surprise. Namco-Bandai recently announced their involvement with these games and are working closely with Nintendo to make this newest entry in the Super Smash Bros. series. I wonder what guess character(s) we will see from Namco? You know they do have the rights to a lot of popular anime properties, including Bleach, One Piece, Dragon Ball series, and Naruto...

On a sidenote, the Villager from Animal Crossing looks cool, but is he supposed to be a replacement for Ness from Earthbound?

Mega Man Character Reveal

(Marks the FUCK out) Holy shit cakes, Batman! Mega Man's a guest character in this one! That was the only character I felt that was missing in Brawl. His arsenal of weapons from fallen Robot Masters will definitely be a match for any of the other Smash characters. I'm looking forward to maining the Blue Bomber.

Damn you, Nintendo. I'm going to either pick up a Wii U for this or buddy up with someone I know who will end up getting this.

Wii Fit Trainer Characer Reveal

The Wii Fit Trainer looks hilarious, yet seems awesome to boot. I hope she's replacing Mr. Game & Watch... Damn that dude was lame in Brawl.

Bayonetta 2

I cannot be too mad that this is a Wii U-exclusive as I am positive Platinum Games will spread the love to multiple platforms after the initial release. If Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube) and the recently released Ninja Gaiden 3: Razer's Edge (Wii U) are any clues to Nintendo's history on exclusives, then you should know that we will see this game on current gen consoles shortly after it's initial release.

From what I have seen so far, this is looking just as good, if not better than the original Bayonetta. I'm anxious to know whether or not this is a sequel or a prequel since both Bayonetta and Jean D'arc are sporting new looks.

If this awesome gameplay from the original creator of the Devil May Cry series isn't enough, Nintendo has stated that there will be two-player multiplayer. No further details on whether or not this is going to be Versus play or Co-Op. I'm hoping for co-op from the looks of the end of the trailer.

+ Pros:

+ The Wii U isn't dead yet.

+ Nintendo really showed off their muscle here this year. It's all about their most popular properties.

+ Pokemon X | Y really delivered. I haven't played a Pokemon game in well over a decade, but I'm anxious to give this one a shot.

- Cons:

- No new Metroid. After The Other M, I thought that Nintendo would be racing to repair Samus' tarnished reputation.

- Working with Platinum Games is cool and all, but Nintendo really needs to branch out more outside of their own properties and get more third party developers to make games for the Wii U.

Other Misc. News and Tidbits

Square Enix announces that Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 are coming to BOTH the Xbox One & PlayStation 4

Square Enix has stated that they are taking advantage of the next gen hardware and want to showcase their titles on both consoles as a result.

Final Fantasy XV Gameplay

Now that we have seen this gameplay slowed down a bit from Sony's conference last night, I have to say that this looks strangely familiar to both Kingdom Hearts and NIER's gameplay, just with more evades and teleporting around the battlefield while your party members act independently. The AI party members are a complete nod from NIER's gameplay as you didn't have to worry about your two party members at all during the course of the game.

Now on the other hand, I'm VERY skeptical when it comes to Square Enix doing action games. This is looking like they are wanting to dwell into the stylish action found in the Devil May Cry or God of War series, and I honestly don't have too much faith in them pulling that off. Let's not forget that lackluster beat 'em up called The Bouncer and the highly underwhelming shooter Dirge of Cerberus that they made back on PlayStation 2. I don't want them to try to do too much here and the game flops as a result.

Like I said yesterday, after the success of Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 on Xbox 360 they cannot deny that extra cash flow. Whether people believe it or not, Square Enix is slowly going under and need every bit of income flowing in possible. With RPGs like Mass Effect, Skyrim, and DragonAge continuing to evolve the genre, their traditional JRPG format is quickly becoming obsolete.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z

This is the revamp that this series has been needing. Favor in a bit of the hip hop to give this same bit of flair that the Afro Samurai anime brought to the table. I don't know about you guys, but I'm looking forward to the opportunity to kill Ryu Hayabusa's ass for once. Killing zombies as a ninja never looked this good.

Tekken Revolution is a rehash of Tekken Tag Tournament 2

If you don't own a Tekken game, but was interested in trying the series out first, this is a good free alternative to see if this is your cup of tea or not. Keep in mind that this is a PlayStation 3 exclusive that has released to the PlayStation Store today. Tekken veterans be warned that this is essentially TTT2 stripped down (no bound system at all) for 1v1 action with a few extra bells and whistles (invincible attacks and Special Arts). I seriously doubt that this will be replacing TTT2 on the tournament scene anytime soon.

Don't take my word for it. Read from the full write-up from the folks at Eventhubs.

Killer Instinct (Xbox One) is NOT a Free to Play Game

That was a HUGE misconception from the news that flooded out yesterday. Players can buy the full game as a digital download at launch with the Xbox One, but if they want to try out the demo version which will just have a few characters available, with Jago only being confirmed at this moment, then they are welcome to sample the game that way.

If you want to see some high level play of the game in action by the developers, including FilthyRich and Markman himself - along with some other popular players from the FGC (Ryan Hart, Mike Ross, DiosX, fLoE, Maximillion, Gootecks, and more) who are at E3 this week, MadCatz was streaming the game earlier today. You can watch the archive here

Xbox Live is continuing to support indy developers with Summer of Arcade (August 7, 2013)

All of these titles have really caught my eye, but I'm anxious to play Two Brothers the most. The developers stated in an interview that this is NOT a co-op game, but the player is in control of both brothers at all times. I'm dying to see how that works first-hand.

PlayStation 4 Used Game Restrictions "Up To Publishers"

OPINION -- E3 2013 Day 1 Coverage: Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony Press Conferences

Day One of E3 2013 is over and done, but let's recap some of the best of today's press conferences with my opinions and first impressions.

Ugh, today's been a LONG day - I woke up at noon (EST time) just to watch Microsoft press conference and stayed glued to the streams on IGN all day afterwards.

I apologize if I don't cover EVERYTHING here, but  I will try to cover most of the popular subjects.

Microsoft

  • Metal Gear Solid V

Unlike Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection, this next-gen Metal Gear Solid title will appear on Microsoft's latest platform. I must say it's amazing to see the series evolve their stealth gameplay this much. It seems like Hideo Kojima is trying to out "Splinter Cell" Splinter Cell. The horseback riding gives me that Red Dead Redemption vibe though, but I'm not saying that like it's a bad thing.

No idea if just Ground Zeroes or Phantom Pain are coming to Xbox or the entire package. Kojima is still being rather vague on whether or not MGSV is two separate games or just one split into two parts.

  • Ryse: Son of Rome

This 300-like action game seems to take a lot of pages from that previously mentioned film, while managing to look original on it's own.

  • Improvements/Changes to Xbox Live Gold

    • 100 cap on friend list expanded to 1000
    • Restructured Player Reputation System and Reporting
    • Your current Xbox Live Gold membership carries over from Xbox 360 to Xbox One
    • 2 Free Games per month (Assassins Creed II & Halo 3 in July; Fable 3 available now)

All I can say is about F'N time, Microsoft. The first three releases are old as fuck, but it's better than nothing. At least I finally feel like I'm getting something back for keeping my Gold account for so damn long. We all knew they were going to eventually cave to deliver something similar to PlayStation Plus' marketing plan.

  • Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac Games)

I'm surprised to see these guys finally giving up the ghost and supporting Microsoft in creating a new IP. The rail-riding mechanic kind of reminds me a bit of the one used in BioShock: Infinite

  • Dead Rising 3

Dead Rising is back to usher in the coming of yet another new Microsoft platform. I honestly never saw the big deal with these games, but to each his/her own I guess. The amount of zombies onscreen is insane though. I would love to these numbers in a Resident Evil game.

  • Killer Instinct (Xbox One Exclusive)

At first glance, these character models look a bit iffy as it seems like this game is in the VERY early stages, much like Street Fighter IV was when Capcom first showed it off to the masses. I'm a bit skeptical on the new character designs as Rare's original character designs for Killer Instinct 2 in arcades were stellar for its time and would definitely hold up well today with some polish, so I personally don't see the need to change the designs this drastically.

Former Tekken series community manager FilthyRich is behind the scenes assisting with the game, which explains his resignation from that position a few weeks ago. I'm VERY anxious to see how this revival turns out.

  • Project Spark

Lots of innovative potential here. This could be the next commercial hit like Minecraft is on both Xbox Live and on PC.

  • Halo (Xbox One)

Two questions - why is Master Chief wearing a desert cape when his armor protects him from roughly everything anyway? Also, is this Halo 5 or something completely new?

  • Xbox One Details
    • Priced at $499 - set to release on November 1, 2013

    • DRM required and console MUST connect online at least once every 24 hours for updates

    • Online registration for ALL games and MUST be installed to the system hard drive, but players can log into any other console and access their game library from anywhere.

    • Players are limited to sharing/exchanging/trading with friends/family up to 10 people labeled as "friends/family"

    • Integration with smartphones and tablets with SmartGlass app - meaning you can continue your game on your iPad on the go or even play with your friends using the tablet as an extra controller - a demo during the E3 press conference demonstrated its use for setting up a multiplayer match in another game in the background on a tablet while playing another game on the television

    • Kinect FULLY integrated into the new console - Voice commands and motion capture gameplay/features are available across the board. On the downside, the console will NOT function without the device turned on.

    • Windows OS integration within the Xbox - Microsoft has stated that users can even use Skype FREE on the new console

    • Designed to be the center of your home entertainment center - TV/Satellite can be streamed through the console via HDMI input and acknowledge the console's voice commands as well.

Pretty steep pricing, but I can still see the hardcore enthusiasts still investing in this. It's roughly the same price as a fancy gaming rig. On the plus side, the updated Kinect device is in the box under that price tag.

  • Titanfall

As a fan of anything giant robot related (especially Gundam), I lost my shit when I saw this from the former Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developers. The bigger irony here is that I'm not even a fan of the FPS genre in the slightest. The on-foot pilot gameplay as well as the Titan gameplay both look fun and pretty balanced for the most part. Pilots are just as capable to take out a Titan as a Titan can.

+ Pros:

  • + Microsoft kept their word - this ENTIRE conference was all about the games.
  • + Microsoft takes a step in the right direction towards making Xbox Live Gold as much of a solid commitment as PlayStation Plus.
  • Killer Instinct is back. ULLLLLLLTRRAAAA COOOOMBOOOO!!!!
  • + New Halo announcement - if anything can still get people to buy a Xbox One, it's Halo.
  • Titanfall looked amazing. I hope and pray for Microsoft's sake that's an exclusive title.
  • + Insomniac Games behind Microsoft could lead to some sleeper hits and new icons that Microsoft has been needing that is not Halo or Gears of War

- Cons:

  • - The $499 price tag for the Xbox One is a bit steep.
  • - Lackluster titles up for grabs to kickstart the free games on Xbox Live Gold. C'mon, at least give us something that came out within the last 12 months.
  • - The technical failures during both The Crimson Dragon (no sound) and Battlefield 4 (unorthodox start-up) trailers.
  • - No support for indy developers it seems.
  • - Not enough new IPs and games for launch that are not already scheduled to be multi-platform.
  • - No clarification on the issues confusing and plaguing consumers surrounding the Xbox One

Electronic Arts (EA)

  • Battlefield 4

This stunning 64 player demo was truly a marvel to witness during the live conference as all 64 players were shown locally on-stage during the event. Pretty awesome that you can blow up the entire skyscraper with everyone in it.

  • UFC 2014

With each new outing, these games are looking more and more like the actual sport, even down to the smallest detail. I could have done without Dana White and his UFC cronies egging on the developer with their two cents on everything.

  • Mirror's Edge 2

EA finally listened to their fans and gave them what they have been asking since the beginning of this current generation of gaming.

+ Pros:

  • NBA Live is back in 2014. Let's hope it doesn't get recalled again.
  • Star Wars: Battlefront is coming back.
  • + These new sports titles are doing a great job at showcasing the visual power of next gen hardware.
  • Mirror's Edge 2. 'Nuff said.

- Cons:

  • - What the fuck does Drake know about FIFA?
  • - Not enough gameplay shown for these upcoming 2014 EA Sports games.
  • - Dana White looked like a retard with his fighters standing up on stage as if they were giving promos for a wrestling match.
  • - No Mass Effect even though EA has openly stated that they are working on the future of the series already.

Ubisoft

  • Rayman Legends

If this is anywhere near as fun as the version I played on a demo kiosk for the Nintendo Wii U, then I might consider picking this up for the nostalgia factor. Besides, I don't have enough kid-friendly games for when my nieces and nephews come over.

  • Trials Fusion (consoles) & Trials Frontier (mobile)

Trials HD was a cult hit during this generation of gaming among downloadable titles and it's great to see that Ubisoft is bringing it back for next gen.

  • The Crew

Out of the many racing games shown today, this is the only one I could see myself playing. I know I suck at these games, but if I could help my friends win the race by knocking the other racers off the road then hell yeah, I'm in.

  • Tom Clancy's The Division

Oh.My.Fucking.God. This seems like Tom Clancy's answer to Borderlands and Left 4 Dead's success. I might have to check this out when they start doing the open beta for it.

  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

While it's great to see them bring back the old school look for Sam, it's sad that Ubisoft didn't bring us more awesome gameplay like they showed off last year. It's hard to stay interested in this title when they are taking so long to put this out in players' hands. At this rate they might as well make it a damn launch title for PS4 and Xbox One.

  • Assassins' Creed IV: Black Flag

Much like Assassins' Creed III, I doubt I'm going to touch this one anytime soon. The new pirate environment looks interesting, but it still looks like they are still recycling the same animations from the last 4 games.

  • Watch_Dogs

Wow, just wow on this game. No matter what platform you get it on it's going to be awesome.

+ Pros:

  • + Lots of great games coming from Ubisoft. The conference started off slow but quickly picked up speed.

- Cons:

  • - That dude was a bit TOO hyped for Peggle 2.
  • - The dead silence during the Rocksmith 2014 demo.
  • - The amount of negative comments directed towards Aisha Taylor (especially via Twitter) as Ubisoft's representative this year.

Sony

  • Playstation Vita Upcoming

    • Killzone
    • The Walking Dead: 400 Days (TellTale Games)
    • Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD
    • God of War 1 & 2 HD

About time they are focusing more on the Vita. With Pokemon X|Y on the horizon, it's do or die time for this handheld.

  • The Last of Us (releases 6/11/13)

This game looks to be more larger than life each time I have a chance to watch gameplay from it. I totally envy you guys with a PlayStation 3 who are lucky enough to get to experience this when it releases tomorrow.

  • Puppeteer

In an era of gaming that seems to be over-saturated with console-based shooters, it's a breath of fresh air to see platformers still alive and kicking.

  • Rain

I don't know why Sony didn't spend more time with showing off this title. It looks really unique to be wondering the world as a ghost. I guess we'll get more information on this later down the road.

  • Beyond: Two Souls

I'm confused here. I thought when they showed this game off last year it was supposed to be a murder mystery game, but now it looks like Ellen Page is training to be the female Solid Snake/Sam Fisher. I don't doubt that this game is going to be good, but they really need to clarify what this game is going to be about.

  • Gran Turismo 6

C'mon, I know you guys aren't surprised. Every new Sony console has to have Gran Turismo. It's a given.

  • Batman: Arkham Origins

    • Adam West Batman exclusive costume DLC
    • Knightfall Batman exclusive costume DLC
I had to laugh that the Adam West Batman was advertised as an exclusive. The sad part is that this trailer was leaked online earlier today before any of the conferences started. The new voice actors for Batman and The Joker aren't bad at all now that we have had a chance to hear them in-game. The new gadget looks cool, but is it just me but didn't the graphics take a slight bit of a downgrade?

For those wondering, this is NOT an exclusive to PS3 nor PS4.

  • Grand Theft Auto V (Exclusive Bundle)

  • The Order | 1886 (ReadyAtDawn)

I wish they showed more gameplay but from first glance it looks like Hansel & Gretel: Vampire Hunters mixed with Left 4 Dead

  • Killzone: Shadow Fall

I still say this series lost my respect when it was reduced to Sony's answer to Halo whereas the original Killzone game on PlayStation 2 was its own entity. Between this, Resistance, and Destiny, Sony does NOT need anymore shooters on its console.

  • DriveClub

Another racing game... It looks gorgeous. I'll say that much.

  • Infamous: Second Son

I'm glad that the protagonist of these games is no longer a cheap knock-off of Static Shock. The new fire/vapor-based powers look very bad ass in this teaser.

  • Knack

And here I thought this was just going to be a simple kids game. Looks like a pseudo-knock of that Monsuno anime but made into a video game.

  • The Dark Sorcerer

Immediately going into this trailer, I was thinking "Oh great another Lord of the Rings/medieval bullshit game..." but then they pull the curtain back and it's a complete troll. Sony promises to have the rest of the trailer up on their website tomorrow.

  • Indy Developer Support

    • Transistor (SuperGiantGames)
    • Mercenary Kings
    • Secret Ponchos
    • Outlast
    • Oddworld: New & Tasty (HD remake of the original)
    • Galak-Z
Mad props to Sony here. Many people have heard about the development hell that indy developers have to go through just to get their games on Xbox Live Arcade, while here Sony is welcoming them to their side of the fence with open arms.

  • Diablo III (PS3 & PS4 support)

  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII (Final Fantasy XV)

I figured Square Enix's big announcement was this. Much like with Final Fantasy XIII, that was set to be the last title on the PlayStation 2 (originally to be what we know as Final Fantasy XII), but was delayed and repackaged as a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title to take advantage of that technology. Now we are seeing the same thing here. Versus XIII was supposed to be a current generation RPG, but it seems Square Enix wants to capitalize on the upcoming PlayStation 4's processing power for this title and release it as it's own entity rather than being bound to the Final Fantasy XIII tie-in packages.

From first glace, it seems that this will be using a similar action-oriented style of gameplay similar to Kingdom Hearts and NIER. I don't know about you guys, but I'm glad that Square Enix has finally realized that the days of turn-based classic JRPGs are dead. It's good to see the Final Fantasy series try something new.

After the commercial success of Final Fantasy XIII, I doubt this is going to be a Sony exclusive at all, especially with how well XIII and XIII-2 did on Xbox 360.

  • Kingdom Hearts III

I was in high school when the last entry of this series came out and finally ten years later, we get a confirmation of a legitimate sequel instead of another bullshit spin-off or sidestory. Welcome back, Sora.

Now I wonder how much longer we have to wait to actually play this? The release date at the end of the trailer only said, "When it's ready..." If we have to wait another five or more years, then Sony and Square Enix need to be slapped.

  • Final Fantasy XIV (PS3 & PS4 support)

  • Assassins' Creed IV: Black Flag

    • Assassins' Creed III: Liberation's protagonist as exclusive DLC
This is like what, the third time today that we had to endure more footage from this game. I know that this series is making Ubisoft a pretty penny yearly, but do we have to endure three different conferences of gameplay for this game like it's new? Ubisoft should have done all of the gameplay during their conference and called it a day.

  • PlayStation 4 Details

    • Priced at $399 - set to release this holiday season
    • No DRM or online registry for games
    • Not required to be online - Fully playable offline
    • Players can openly trade and exchange games among friends
Well done, Sony, well done. You have successfully quelled most players' fears with the Xbox One and provided them with a safe alternative.

+ Pros:

  • + Sony manages to outshine Microsoft in every way possible with this conference, causing several Xbox faithfuls consider jumping ship for the next generation of gaming.
  • + It was a nice touch to remind people about The Last of Us before its release tomorrow.
  • + Sony secured exclusive deals with both Warner Bros. Interactive and Square Enix that really paid off here today.
  • + Indy developers are allowed to shine on both the PS3 and PS4.
  • + A staggering variety of titles, especially new IPs shown on this conference.

- Cons:

  • - You're still going to have to purchase the camera separate even though you pick up the PS4 at $399.
  • - No release date for both Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV
  • - Not enough time to show off the indy titles and some of their other IPs. Time could have been cut from Assassins' Creed IV: Black Flag to show off the other new IPs.

Day 1 Afterthoughts:

+ Pros:

  • + Lots of innovative and original ideas coming from all ends of the table today. Every conference had at least 2 or more games that just blew your socks off.
  • + Sony got the message and listened to gamers, answering our prayers.
  • + For the first time in many years, Square Enix made an impressive impact at E3.

- Cons:

  • TOO many new shooters and racing games on the horizon. I thought I wouldn't be this annoyed with almost every other new trailer during all of the conferences was for a new FPS or racing simulator. You know it was too much when even they are promoting games oriented for kids to be shooters as well. So much for the United States developers trying to tone down the guns in gaming after those school shootings last year huh?
  • Double standards in media coverage for this year's show. Several websites didn't skip a beat to immediately post the comment made between the Killer Instinct lead producer and one of Microsoft's female reps playing against each other when he told her to "Sit back and take it." Anyone from the FGC can tell you that phrase means to sit back and take this loss or beating. Instead, the media associates the comment towards him wanting to rape her. Later this evening, Ubisoft's female representative (Aisha Taylor) made several jokes concerning porn and other adult-oriented behavior that were merely brushed underneath the rug.
  • - All of the hatred towards Microsoft. There was so much hate from gamers all around the world, looking towards Microsoft to fail in this console war. Most of you don't realize what would happen if no other contenders are left to challenge Sony. They would charge us whatever they want to get our money. They already beat Nintendo back in the PSone and PlayStation 2 era, and continues to do so now. I get that Sony is our savior right now, but don't forget that Sony was in Microsoft's shoes back when they debuted the PlayStation 3. Now the shoe is back on the other foot.
  • The used game dilemma doesn't stop with just Microsoft & Sony. Sure, Sony has expressed that you can trade and exchange games with friends, but that does not mean that publishers like EA cannot slap on used game fee, regardless that they are scrapping their current registration fees and practices.
