Silent Rage: My Thoughts on #BlackLivesMatter

Less than a week ago, I said the following on my personal Facebook account:

The more I read online everyday and see on the various news outlets, social media, and pretty much with people out and about everyday, I can't help but agree with Solomonster (podcaster that I listen to frequently) said about 2020 thus far:
"2020 has come around and a LOT of people have been showing their @$$... and not in a good way either."
From people showing their true colors on bigotry, racism, and just overall STUPIDITY, I know can't look the same way at a lot of people from this point forward. It's really sad too. By the day, it seems like my respect for more and more people is going down the drain fast.

Unfriend me or block me, I don't care at this point. This is real life and not a popularity contest like we're all back in high school. People flourish off positivity in their lives and can do without the negativity, so in a crazy turn of events, this is a purging in a sense for a lot of people.

I'm 35 going on 36 years old. In a lot of avenues of my life, I firmly believe that my silence is golden. I don’t speak publicly on a lot of subjects, but the widespread awareness of #BlackLivesMatter makes me want to say SOMETHING and it took me a long time how to put my feelings into the right words.

"Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park is a song that still resonates with me to this day, much like a lot of their songs.

From as far back as I could remember, I never felt like I belonged, regardless of my skin color or interests, even to this day. Sure, there's seldom few people that I click with and get along with regularly, but I can count those who I truly feel comfortable around that aren't family or childhood friends on one-hand if I'm perfectly honest. Most of those individuals are people I have met on the Internet and haven't interacted with in a real life setting either. Part of it is me being an introvert that I've went into detail about in the past, but the other part is a massive disconnect with society as a whole the older I get.

I blame childhood bullies and peers putting the notion in my head of never being “not black enough” for my race. It's accepted into society now with the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has swept over the world, but I was a comic book nerd growing up. On top of that, I was a black comic book nerd at that. I'll admit, I'm never as upset and outspoken as everyone else when it comes to the outrage and demand that there should be more heroes of color in those mediums. I have been into this stuff for so long that I just got used to it. If there was a hero or character of color I would instantly gravitate or identify with them, but that didn't stop me from admiring and identifying with the white/Caucasian heroes/characters either. I don't know what to properly describe it as, but I never developed what I see online nowadays as this hatred for anything that isn't represented with other cultures and races in mind for proper identification from the viewers/spectators, such as the mindset that thinks that we need multi-racial versions of established heroes and other beloved fictional characters. How about we show some originality and create our own characters of color instead to represent us and fill in the gaps as needed? Or here's a better idea, shine some light on lesser known characters of color and different ethnic backgrounds and/or sexual preferences. I like the latter more since there's more potential to give those established lesser known characters the love and appreciation - and better yet, exposure to a wider audience - that they deserve.

I don't want people to think I'm totally against multi-racial variants of established heroes either. I cried watching Avengers: Endgame in the theater at two different occasions:

The first was during the film's climax when Captain America said the one thing I thought I would never hear in a live-action movie for the longest time - "Avengers Assemble!". Kids today will not understand the gravity of what it means that Marvel Studios and Disney have done with taking Marvel Comics' heroes, who were widely regarded as their B through D tier heroes in comparison to their powerhouses in Spider-Man, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four (all held hostage by Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox at the time) and made this cinematic universe actually work without the latter to lay out the groundwork. So as a kid who grew up being ridiculed and picked on for majority of my youth to the early point of my adolescent life, it broke me to see these beloved heroes that I have loved reading about and even attempting to draw over the years stand all together on the silver screen.

The second time was during the film's ending (spoiler warning) after Steve Rogers/Captain America took all of the Infinity Stones back to the past, only to return as an elderly old man. He asks Sam Wilson/The Falcon to sit down with him. Bucky silently nods and gives the go ahead. From here, Steve takes his iconic shield from out of his bag and hands it to Sam. Steve then asks, "How does it feel?" Sam hesitates and replies with, "It feels heavy... like it belongs to someone else." I lost it. I'm not even going to lie, because I knew how controversial yet powerful the decision to make The Falcon be the new Captain America in the comics continuity was when they did it. Anthony Mackie is definitely the right man to pull this off and carry the burden. Not a lot of people still don't agree with this decision to this day since Chris Evans was so beloved as Captain America/Steve Rogers on and off-camera, but if Marvel Studios are looking to continue making waves for another decade or more, then they need a different type of Captain America, especially for where the world is headed in the next decade or so. I did a paper in college talking about how superheroes and comics work best when they are reflections of the time periods that they originate from. That fact is still applicable today, now more than ever.

Turning beloved non-white characters into white/Caucasian counterparts to suit needs in live-action cinema is definitely whitewashing though and that deserves the shit storm that it brings every time it happens. That shit isn't going to fly anymore when this stuff isn't digested by a niche minority anymore. The majority sees a lot of the stuff that was swept underneath the rug for so long and it's the same thing that's happening with what's going on with black lives. Nothing isn't going to be swept underneath the rug and forgotten about. People are speaking out. People are demanding for a change. People genuinely want an end for the bloodshed.

“Treat people how you want to be treated.”

The was a lesson that my parents burned into my mind at an early age. I carry that with me in all walks of my life, even to this day. I guess that's why it frustrates me more than it should when there's people in our lives that habitually take advantage of said kindness and take it lightly.

Examples:

One co-worker who tried to cost me my job on not one but multiple occasions over the course of the past three years. Always confronted this person with a smile in all of our interactions all the way up to the day of her departure this past week. I wasn’t going to give this individual the satisfaction that they got under my skin. You beat hatred with a smile. I wasn't going to reduce myself to going down on her level.

I can’t even call certain individuals on message boards and forums that I associate myself with regularly as acquaintances at best who say controversial shit on the regular just to get a rise out of not only me, but all of those around them just to see the sparks fly on that website or on social media as a whole. I will never understand those individuals that get off of others’ misery for their own amusement. People take up these hobbies online and seek out others with similar interests to connect and distance themselves from the negativity and angst in their daily lives. There's no reason to go on the Internet and be a dick just to stroke your own ego. I've lost too many friends to suicide, no thanks to dipshits and others bullying and verbally assaulting them for no reason. It's easier said than done to tell someone to have a tough skin and to just deal with it. Words hurt and leave deeper wounds than any knife or sword. I distance myself from people a lot - more so for their own protection than anything and for my own mental clarity. If someone pushes me to that point of getting mad enough to offer a rebuttal to the shit that comes out of their mouths, trust and believe that I'm not apologizing after the fact. On the flip side though? I'm getting too old to argue with people on the Internet that I have never met before nor don't know me personally in any shape or form outside some message board posts. What's really frustrating that it's so easy to get caught up in all of this information that comes from the wealth of technology at our disposal. It's up to everyone to find that point where you go "That's enough and step away." Too much of anything isn't good for anyone. That's the same from all of this information that we absorb from the Internet, television, and those around us in our everyday lives.

A positive example? During my college days, I had a particular work study job that saw me working with other students of various ethnic backgrounds, races, and even religious faiths. On that very same job, everyone would ridicule this one Muslim co-worker for his practices and what not. No one would want to work nor talk with him. One of the supervisors was even maliciously screwing with his pay when he was the hardest worker they had. I told him what this supervisor was doing and let’s just say that the supervisor at question wasn’t in power much longer. That particular Muslim co-worker and I hit it off as friends for a very long time. I haven’t kept in touch with him since we left college, but by chance he met my father on another job that they landed at the same time and he was able to help my father in a similar manner. Anyone who knows me personally will tell you that my dad isn’t the most patient with modern technology, so he needed help in that regard. My Muslim friend was able to educate my father in learning the technical skills required to keep his job when their peers were willing to let him sink and fail. To this day, years later, my dad still tells me about how much my Muslim friend thought highly of me for what I did for him when we were both in college.

Here's another positive example. When I got to college, I felt more estranged from everyone else than ever before. That shit that everyone tells you about you go to college to reinvent yourself and make all of these new friends and what not is complete bullshit. I felt more like a social outcast in college than I have ever did in my grade school years. I never felt "black enough" since I didn't know about all of these pop culture black films, didn't live and breathe Scarface, Blow, or any other crime film, or I couldn't name 10-20 rappers on a whim. I was still that black nerd who liked my comic books, anime, and video games. I ended making a friend who I met on a whim when I was hanging out in one of the 24/7 computer labs. This white girl was getting slut-shamed by some of her so-called friends and frat boys. I didn't see her for any of that. She merely asked me if I wanted to hang out and it just took off from there. She didn't even had to acknowledge me at all being there that night. All of the crazy trips to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night, all of her silly texts and songs from her mixtapes and CDs are still stuck in my head to this day. Hell, I hung out and talked with her more than my roommates at the time and she remains to be one of the very few people I still keep in contact with from college. She treated me like a good friend should and I extended that courtesy to her as well. She didn't have to give me the time of day, but saw me alone and offered her friendship. I doubt I would have had the mental stability to survive my first year of college without her in that regard.

I believe in God and his teachings, yet I have a lot of friends who are atheists and those of different religious faiths altogether. I have always made it a point never to force my religious beliefs on anyone else and would kindly ask those that I call friends to do the same. Who am I to tell you or anyone else for that matter what to believe in? If I can’t respect your beliefs then how can I expect you to believe mine? It all goes back to treating people how you want to be treated.

My Own Experiences

The Police

Truth be told, I have worked with law enforcement, either during my past working security or even knowing them personally from my own brother-in-law working as one in the past. My oldest sister works in Criminal Law and I have accompanied her to several law enforcement conferences over the years. One of her mentors that passed away a few years ago was a great man and a close family friend. He died of natural causes, so I won’t tarnish his legacy by saying that he had anything to do with what has scarred this country in recent memory. I’ll just say that man was loved by his peers and my sister like a second father.

One the flip side, I worked with a police officer in one of my former places of employment for a VERY long time. He treated me with respect and we had no issues out of the years that we worked together. That is until one fateful day. I don’t know if he got up on the wrong side of bed or what, but he went off on some other members of color in the office that day, saying some derogatory terms which got him reprimanded by Human Resources. I was called in to testify on his case as a character witness. I didn’t lie for him. I thought that one situation was extremely uncharacteristic for him, but otherwise, I thought he was a good person. That being said, I couldn’t look at him the same again after that day, not that he was around much longer after that.

That being said, I’ve seen the good that the police are capable of, but I’ve seen the bad too.

Two more examples hit close to home really. You probably seen it on the news. A peaceful protest in the capital here in my home state turns ugly as the police are forced to take militaristic action to resume control of the situation after having one of their cars flipped over. Fortunately, there weren't any causalities in this particular situation, but I can't say that it was a pretty site to watch unfold on the local news that evening.

Another was literally less than two weeks ago where I was at work and the police from all over the area started filing into the parking lot of our place of business. No one happened to inform our establishment that there was going to be a local protest up the road in town. As a result, the local law enforcement chose our area to gear up like they were going to war. Highway patrolmen, off-duty cops, and local and out of county officers kept piling on in. As one of the few people of color at my current place of employment, I was fucking scared out of my mind seeing these guys gearing up with enough firepower to put down a sizable platoon. I took photos and recorded video on my phone (both of which I would share on this platform but I'm pretty sure someone would be easily able to trace back to me...) and sent it to my boss. Normally, I would take my daily walk/jog around the property for exercise, but that was one of the few days that I took my black ass straight home after my boss gave the okay to evacuate the building. I don't know nor want to know how that played out with that many cops in one area for a small town's protest.

#BlackLivesMatter

Back when I was commuting to and from college, I would start my morning commute about 6AM and wouldn’t get back home until after midnight after doing both of my work study jobs, daily coursework, and getting homework done while on campus. One of two cops would stop me at two different points of my drive home almost every week. I never told anyone about this until now, but that was another nerve-racking moment of my life as a man of color. Here I am, alone and tired on my drive home and this guy is giving me the riot act, asking me where I’m going and what I’m doing when I have my passenger seat full of textbooks and what not from my college coursework. Out of all of those interactions for roughly two years, I only got ONE speeding ticket. The rest of those times were just the police heckling me for no goddamn reason. They could’ve killed me and left me for dead on that dark backroad and no one would’ve been the wiser.

Ever since I’ve been diagnosed with diabetes over the past year, I’ve been exercising a lot by walking around local neighborhoods, parks, or wherever I can squeeze it in. The place of my current employment has about a mile or two around the entire campus/compound, so I try to get a walk in around that entire area during my lunch break. Sounds innocent enough right? I would think so too, but once every week, there would be a police car that would follow me around the ENTIRE loop around the vicinity. Mind you, I’m the only person of color making rounds in this area. I’m not going to lie. That shit scares the fuck out of me. We’ve read the stories about blacks being gunned down for no reason while going for their morning jogs. I don’t want to be another statistic. It’s shit like this that is always on the back of my mind when I’m going for a walk which is for my own physical health but in the back of my mind, I’m fearing for my life too. All of this just because I’m a man of color.

I'm sure every has heard of the murder of Breonna Taylor who was gunned down in her own Louisville apartment by police blindly firing into her home, thinking it was a drug bust... or so they have said. When I heard of that story, I thought back to how many times when I would come home from working 2nd or 3rd shift on my old dead end security job, only to see the police show up in the neighborhood where the apartment that my older brother and I were sharing, only to bust yet another one of our neighbors on drugs. Who says that couldn't have been me shot dead in the middle of the night? Thank god that I don't live in that environment anymore, but that was my living situation when I was barely making ends meet back then.

Ever since this COVID-19 thing went in full swing, I never stopped working nor got laid off. Instead, my place of employment increased my hours, so I’m still out in the public everyday. I’m already diabetic so I wear a facemask everywhere I go. Being a man of color, I instantly get singled out like I’m about to rob any place I go to while wearing a facemask on though from all of the awkward stares and glances. It’s already fucking frustrating to be wearing this mask where I’m already feeling claustrophobic the longer I wear it, but here I am again, fearing for my life too if the wrong person gets the wrong idea why I’m wearing a facemask.

White Privilege

As far back as I can remember, I remember seeing my white peers and classmates having certain “advantages”. Some would cheat and lie their way through their coursework onto the honor roll and high academics. Others would lie and cheat their way into positions of power and authority that they are clearly not qualified for, only to hire their close friends and family members with even fewer skills necessary to do said job. For example, I have seen one place of employment hire a white colleague that I knew personally, who didn’t have any credentials to perform the desired A++ IT position into that position, but allowed him the time to go to school and get the said degree off-the-books while upper management lied about his background and experience level(s). How do I know that? Because I applied for the very same job (while working for a different department within said organization) with several other peers of color (all fresh out of college with IT degrees, mind you) and was shot down for the same position. That "free ride" in a sense didn't pan out after the organization was forced to do a widespread thorough background check on all of the workers' credentials, so he was fired and removed out of his position faster than a hiccup for working under false pretenses.

I couldn’t help but find that experience a bit daunting. This isn't the only time I've seen this happen and I know it won't be the last either.

Many of you know that I have been a fan of professional wrestling for a very long time. You have to be blind and/or the special kind of stupid not to see that something similar is going on in WWE. How many blonde white women has Vince McMahon pushed to the moon? How many white guys have been elevated to top spots in that company while the black wrestlers, along with just about any non-white talent, hit a glass ceiling and are reduced to being comedy goofs and jobber fodder? I was happy to see Kofi Kingston win the big one at WrestleMania last year, but let's be real here. Kofi was NEVER part of their original plans. They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to go in that direction. Much like their moves with pushing women for their so-called Divas Revolution and the infamous Warrior Award during Hall of Fame as part of WrestleMania weekend, it's just a publicity stunt and PR move to garner good press and add brownie points to their public reception. The biggest thing that's laughable about the Warrior Award is that The Ultimate Warrior was a known bigot. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but the truth's out there. Maybe his wife, Diana Warrior, feels differently, but I'm not going to forget the words that came out of his own mouth.

Oh yeah, let's not forget this moment in WWE history that has been ironically swept under the rug.

I get mad thinking back to this storyline every single time that someone reminds me of it. All of these years later and Bruce Pritchard still makes excuses for it and tries to say that this didn't have any "racist" intentions when it was ALL over that storyline. Triple H was in bed with the boss' daughter at that point and could have changed it but no, this asshole went along with it. I praise him for all of his work with NXT and stuff in the years that followed, but this is still one blemish on his WWE career that I won't ever forget. Instead, a lot of people tend to overlook that fact.

Oh yeah, let's not forget that known racist Hulk Hogan is still employed by that company, who to this very day, still hasn't given a formal apology for what he said. Yet somehow, someway, this asshole is still employed and tolerated by this company.

Getting Mad

Every time one of these new reports come out of black lives being lost to police brutality, random gun violence, another tragedy from school shootings, etc., you always look on social media and see the same song and dance. "We have to do better." It goes around for a few days and then people go right back to their usual behavior. Nothing changes. It happens time and time again.

In so many avenues of life, I feel so powerless, especially when it is engraved in your head by social conventions that you don't matter. In Superman: The Animated Series, Superman stood up to Darkseid and was beaten to an inch of his life, unable to stop the pending invasion from Apokalips. Darkseid came to Earth, expecting the people of Earth to cower and beg for their lives. Instead, it took ONE man to stand and hold their ground to tell Darkseid they weren't handing over the Earth without a fight. Who was that man? It wasn't Superman - it was Dan Turpin.

Dan Turpin wasn't a Superman - he was just an ordinary man doing the right thing. That's what I aspire to do every day. I envy that degree of courage to stand up when others will do or say nothing. I want to do good and inspire others to do good, despite the fact that's often easier said than done. It's easy for me to spout off at the handle about stuff I don't agree with or rave about things that I love on here, but difficult to take a stand.

I'm no martyr but it frustrates and irritates me to no end when you have these social justice warriors (SJWs) on not only Facebook, Twitter, and other avenues of social media, but across other websites and networks, like message boards, Discord, DeviantArt, Tumblr, and various blogs. These individuals paint this picture that they are so high and mighty that if everything doesn't go their way or carries out every request at any and all whims, they call themselves a sacrificial lamb that will bring said platform down with their departure. It's easy to be brave online behind a keyboard as an anonymous user with your IP address hidden behind a VPN. I feel like these "internet celebrities" (if you can even call them that) talk a big game but wouldn't stand with anyone for these causes if it arrived at their doorsteps. Over the last few weeks, I have heard a lot of shit come out of the mouths of podcasters, YouTube/Twitch streamers, and other popular outlets in nerd culture that has been either really tone deaf and/or completely insensitive of what's going on in the world right now. I'm not ashamed to admit that I went around unfollowing and unsubscribing to a lot of channels and outlets I have enjoyed in the past when it's clear these individuals only care about me as long as I'm eating out of their asses with a silver spoon.

What makes me mad with a lot of these killings is that it could have been me more often than not in similar situations. There's not a single day that I don't worry about my oldest niece and nephew going to college and having to fend for themselves as men and women of color in the state that the world we live in has become. The sad reality of this matter is that it's nothing new. It's just the fact that modern technology is recording and exposing more and more of these tragedies and bringing them to the surface. I will repeat myself for those who still don't get it. Imagine yourself in the shoes of George Floyd, lying on the ground with a police officer holding his knee on your neck for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. You know that you're going to die with there being nothing within your power that you could do to stop it. Your life flashes before your eyes in those final moments and the only thing you wanted to do is to see your mother and loved ones one more time. All of this senseless violence all because the color of your skin. That's what makes me - and a lot of people like me - angry.

I want to clarify something too. I don't want my white friends to think that I think their entire race are to blame or I have it against all cops. The white friends that I have don't have to explain themselves nor apologize or make excuses for what their relatives and/or ancestors have done in the past. I know what's in your hearts. For the white people who may be reading this that I don't know personally, I want to see what YOU do in the present day with your own actions. Acknowledge what's going on today and has been going on for decades now. Listen to your friends and colleagues of color about their experiences. Stop making this about you.

Last but not least, all lives do and will ALWAYS matter but right now, the focus is on the importance and awareness of black lives being lost to police brutality and senseless violence. If you can't understand and do that much, then I don't know what to say to you.

RANT: Why Do I Even Bother?

Why do I even bother? I'm getting to the point where I'm asking myself that more often than I care to admit these days since the start of the New Year.

Much like majority of my content on here, I know that most people aren't going to read this anyway, so I'm going to take the opportunity to rant and ramble about a few things. In that regard, forgive me if this isn't organized or jumping around a bit between topics.

I gave Discord a fair chance the past few weeks and I still don't see what's the big fascination with it. The same 3-5 people talk to me on it that were around the first time around and no much else. I don't see the point in joining any servers when people know how to find me. If I have to join server X, Y, and Z to talk to specific people then it's not worth my time. It's the same as all of the other social media outlets I'm on. I know people who wouldn't give me the time of their day IRL but look for me to add them on Facebook, Twitter, Xbox Live, PSN, or any other social platform under the sun. Fuck that noise. I'm not here to contribute to your friend count and continue feeding your ego.

“Social media is so dangerous to those of us with mental health conditions and I know in the media and our everyday lives now people are being hired and fired by their social media followings or the amount of information they post or how popular they are. I think it’s a disease, so out of that situation with my colleague I am no longer on social media, I will never get back on social media”. - Mauro Ranallo

I can see why Mauro Ranallo calls social media a "disease", especially to your mental health. I gave Discord another chance because I got sick of getting shit from tons of people I know that say, "You need to be more social!" "Discord will really make your communities grow on both your blogs and streaming!" "Discord is what connecting everyone now. You gotta get with the times, man." I hate feeling like whenever I message people, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Discord, etc. whatever, and it's like I'm disturbing, bothering, or hindering them from something much more important in their lives. I get it. A lot of my friends now have families, kids to watch, jobs to work, and whatever the fuck else. You don't want to be disturbed? Cool. Put one of those fancy away/busy messages up, but don't expect me NOT to drop you message at all hours of the day when you ignore mine. That's one primary reason why I show up invisible across a ton of social media platforms. If I'm not visible then you don't know when the fuck I'm going to respond to you out of respect.

(Shrugs) I dunno. Maybe I'm thinking too much into this. After the first 1-2 times, I give people a break that they are busy as I'm not the fastest person to respond either, but when it's a regular thing it makes me not even want to even talk to you out of constantly feeling like I'm a nuisance to whatever you're doing. Call it fucking paranoid or whatever you want, but that's just how I feel. Last time I checked this is my blog and I can express how I feel on it. I went into enough detail on my mental health a while ago, so that's out in the open too.

I wish I could turn that part of my brain off but I can't... It's like one of my favorite scenes from the short-lived Beware the Batman animated series where Bruce Wayne is out for dinner with Tatsu and tests her eye for spotting criminal activity. Tatsu asks him how does he turn it off and he simply replies with, "I can't..."

I find something I really like with Monster Hunter World and occasionally I still get people who go "You're still playing that shit?" or "That's all you play, bro?" Now it's getting to the point where I'm even getting disgusted with the game after the last few sessions. It's not the game itself - it's the fucking people I deal with sometimes. The Monster Hunter community are one of the best gaming communities that I have been glad to be apart of in recent years but boy, this community has been trying my patience since Safi'jiiva dropped. The only thing I want to do is help folks out like I've been doing since post-game but nope, you got people still playing like it's week 1 of the base game in Master Rank. Call me an elitist if you want at this point, but I get fed up with this crap where people who have CLEARLY been carried from the base game and throughout the expansion's main quest line only to play like dog shit when push comes to shove in post-game content. Why should I have to baby you when you don't know basic survival skills or are extremely ignorant to the people trying to help you. It got so bad last night that I actually started booting people from my hunts and session. Something I haven't done AT ALL in this game to this date. Almost pained me to do so, but I just got sick of that shit. People are trying to help this fool during the Safi'jiiva siege and he's just carting over and over talking shit over the mic, clearly ignoring the rest of the team. I know that I keep saying it but I'm definitely done with this game after the festival/appreciation fest is over on the 13th. I'll take a two month hiatus until whatever the new content is over in April from the roll out calendar that Capcom released.

I got so fed up with how people were playing the last few days on multiplayer hunts that I wrote a four-page tutorial guide on how to approach the Safi'jiiva siege, only to delete it when I got home from work that evening. I just need to stop pouring my heart into this game to the extent that I have been lately. Grinding the Arena quests (for the coins to craft/upgrade the Guild Palace weapons and armor) isn't helping in the least. That was arguably the worst portion of content in the base game before the Iceborne expansion and it STILL remains to be loathed after the fact. I can understand that they want players to try out all of the various weapon types per hunt, but limiting the choices down to a mere five out of the 18 weapon types is fucking moronic. It's the most limiting mode in the game, especially when the game encourages so much player freedom in terms of gameplay otherwise.

I dunno what I'm going to have to do to get out of this funk I'm in where I'm just flat out disgusted with the thought of working on specific content or trying out different avenues/angles for attracting potentially new readers to this blog. Like I know what my followers/readers on the wrestling fandom end of things want. I can jokingly and seriously comment on modern wrestling until the cows come home. That part is easy. When it comes to the gaming/nerd culture spectrum of things, I just don't know what the actual fuck people want from me. That thought alone is frustrating all on it's own. I pour my heart and soul into stuff like those series retrospectives on Virtual-ON or Jem and the Holograms, only to get crickets. On the other hand, my review on the Lastman TV series was my pride and joy for 2019, especially with the creators themselves taking a moment to comment on my work. That meant a lot. Is it too much to ask for a small validity that what I do matters? I like to think that I'm not a selfish person. A few of my readers on here can testify that the only reason I continued streaming was to keep making content that their kids enjoyed watching on my channel. I wasn't doing that for anyone else but them at that point. I'm not getting paid to stream. I'm not sponsored. I'm lucky to even have a someone watching period during most of my streams, hence why I got rid of the active chat sidebar from my PS4 streams. I was lucky to get my YouTube channel back in that regard - well for the most part it's "majority" there, sans a few missing videos.

I mentioned it before about how much I hate doing themes on this blog because life always finds a way to derail me from focusing extensively on them. It paid without warning that I was considering one for Black History Month, even though I wasted my time doing one about two years ago over on Facebook, that I would have a family emergency to deal with at the start of the week. Nah, I'm scrapping that idea. I have one thing I'm considering covering for this month that posted about Discord that I'm sure NO ONE saw anyway, so that will remain a secret until I get that side project done. I have another project in mind too, but it would be fine if that spills over into the rest of the year if I don't get to it this month, so I'm not even going to mention it.

Truth be told, my on/off wrestling collaborator, Serena, and I have discussed doing a podcast of sorts before since she has experience doing radio in her country. I honestly hate how my own voice sounds, hence why I don't like recording commentary on my own streams. On top of that, we barely have time for the efeds that we're apart of together to even put time aside for recording a show weekly. Hell, I'm working on a show for my fed right now that should have been done about a week and a half ago. We go on weeks on end without even talking about wrestling with each other until something "big" pops up into the news or we want to recommend something to each other. That being said, I love talking to her about wrestling at times since she's younger than me and I get to pass my knowledge and/or perspective down to her youthful mind. In exchange, she gives me how she feels about the modern take on wrestling as she's not bothered by the overkill of "flippy shit" like I am at times. It's a give-take bond that I cherish when it comes to looking at and commenting on wrestling. Plus it's hilarious when we can come from both ends of the spectrum and agree when something is REALLY fucking stupid across the board.

One of my friends mentioned that I should share more of my artwork on Facebook and I'm skeptical and reluctant to do that. I posted samples of what I'm currently working on from the last few years on my personal Facebook account and got crickets for the most part. I have a DeviantArt account where I share majority of that content on too, but it's lukewarm reception at best. I gave Wattpad a shot too at the start of the year and really haven't gotten any bites there. I'm optimistic in that regard as it took a while before my FictionPress account to garner some traction when I was doing that back in high school and while I was in undergrad courses in college. Like I told myself after Stan Lee died, I'm doing that project ENTIRELY for me, even if I'm the only one who sees it to the bitter end. I don't have anyone storyboarding and/or penciling and inking my work for me. I'm still fumbling my way through photo-editing programs and can't fully grasp the lighting and shading/shadows. I'm sure the latter is evident in my renders from Daz3D. What little I know in Daz Studio is from my own trial and error. There's like a handful of fellow 3D artists on dA that offer some pointers and tips but I find it hard to believe that they would provide any concrete help that would diminished their own source of income from their artwork that they sell on and off that site. Content creation on there is even more frustrating as it's not going to garner much interest unless it's NSFW work or erotic fan fiction. Trust me, I know. I ran a few tests with a few "mature content" renders and got a ton more views/hits on those than anything else I posted. Ugh... I get it, sex sells but I would like not to whore my characters out to get exposure. Once you go down that route, there's really no coming back from it. My B3 story has some mature/adult content in it, but nothing much more than what you would see in one of the MCU Netflix shows.

“Create. Not for the money. Not for the fame. Not for the recognition. But for the pure joy of creating something and sharing it.”
― Ernest Barbaric

I honestly started writing this article about a week ago and by the time that I finished writing this and actually posting it, I got some rather good vibes from people from different ends of the spectrum. On one scope, I got a religious answer to my question that I'm not going to get into. I'm not an overly religious person, but I'm not ever going to shove my religious beliefs down my readers throats on here. That's the one thing I will draw the line on as I do the same with my friends. I don't fuck with anyone about politics and religion. That's my two venues where I don't converse with people about. In that regard, I got the answer I needed to hear. As for the quote above, that added to the answer I wanted and more importantly needed to hear.

I think my problem is that I want to create things to share on here and on different avenues of the Internet but when push comes to shove I haven't actually enjoyed doing any of it. The rare exceptions were streams of playthroughs of some of my favorite games, even when I know not a goddamn soul but me was paying attention or the past two weeks when I got some random as hell ideas for artwork involving some of my renders from Daz Studio. It's shit like that, such as outlining and mapping out my B3 (Bullets, Blades, and Blood) story and cooking up character bios, something that I keep entirely to myself for the most part outside of a select few people and don't actually share on here or anywhere for that matter that I truly love doing.

To the people who encourage me to put those negative thoughts behind me and just continue doing you (me), THANK YOU. To the folks who tell me to stop whining and just get over it, simply put, FUCK YOU.

This blog will continue being my creative outlet - a space to call my own. I honestly still don't know what's the long-term theme/focus will be, but I'll keep writing and working on something that I enjoy. Maybe you'll find something that you like. Maybe you won't, but I can be content that I enjoyed doing it.

DISCUSSION: An Audience of One - Inside the Mind of an Introvert

I was reading an introvert-centric blog this morning and really got motivated to do a post like this today, discussing my mindset as an introvert as of late. Besides, this was one way to appear that I was working on this longer than usual day of work since I have been up since 5AM this morning...

COMMUNITY

Truth be told, I man at least 3-4 different communities online. There's the main Method to Madness group on Facebook where you're probably reading this post on or was linked to here that I have a Twitter account for that I honestly don't post on as much as I should. Then there's the Let's Talk Wrestling Blog group on Facebook that spawned from my Twitter account of the same name that I'm sure most of those followers migrated back and forth from FB and Twitter from my discussions and rants on there until I merged the blog with Method to Madness for my sanity in terms of updating things. There's also my wealth of friends and associates that I have met throughout e-fedding over the years and the ones that I have ran and still do to this day. And finally, I know a few artists on DeviantArt. I honestly don't share what I post on there via my blogging efforts as I tend to host more "mature" (read: adult/NSFW) content on there - mine and those by artists that I'm a fan of. If you're interested, I'm sure you can find my handle if you know some of my much older online aliases. I've had an account on there since high school, just didn't start posting much until recently. Hey, I get it, a lot of you guys let you kids read my content so I tend to have a bit of a filter on that stuff in terms of what line to cross on here.

That being said, I do some things that are not really to my benefit as a whole as a content creator - I don't allow all of these communities to bleed each other much. It's not that I haven't tried over the years. For example, I tend to let both the folks on the MtM end of things know about stuff I'm doing for LTW and vice versa from time to time on social media. Some people will bite, others won't, but the content is there on this same Blogspot page. The same goes for when I'm streaming video games on my Twitch channel that would cater to both audiences, but that gets little to no attention either.

To be quite honest, I know that I have myself to blame for all of that as I don't ever have a set schedule in mind when I do stream and it's usually at random or on a whim in terms of hours or what day I decide on doing it. I'm even worse at adding new content across the board, not only for these various blogs but for my DeviantArt as well. I'm still working on new chapters for B3 (Bullets, Blades, and Blood) and it's spin-off(s)/side-story/companion pieces but I'm hesitant to post them as I'm still doing tweaks and I want to design all of the key players in Daz3D/Daz Studio first. Having to replace and reinstall a hard drive really set me back on that front as I have to find and redownload all of my resource files that I had acquired for that program to create 3D models. On top of that, I haven't had the time to finish extracting files from the old, damaged drive(s) and while some files can be used others I have to scrap and rebuild completely from scratch, creating another headache.

My final words are that is ok to admit you need a bit of support and encouragement from time to time. Following your dreams isn’t the easiest thing to do, in fact it might very well be the hardest thing you’ll ever do.
And you don’t have to go the journey alone.
There are many, so many, who have gone before you, and are going with you, you just need to look for them and ask, do you reckon we can do this? I do.

I'm not knocking anyone who has help but own pride is going to be the pivotal contributor whether or not I find success or I fall on my face and completely fuck up all of these creative endeavors. I don't have anyone designing graphics for me or creating a funky, cool intro theme for my channel or webpage. I do all of this shit myself in my free time. What I don't know how to do, I'm painstakingly watching tutorial videos and reading how-to guides to learn to do so. And even then, I still don't ever think what I do is good enough, especially when I look around at what my peers are doing and accomplishing for themselves.

For example, my friends over at Retro Cat Adventures are always doing something neat or having something new cooking up their sleeves. If it's not Retro himself churning out retro gaming reviews or finding the coolest or obscure stuff to post about, he's got multi-talented girlfriend with her various art projects on display from paintings, digital art, and even sculptures - some of that they've used for an original table-top game of their own design. They are always around to socialize and interact with their community with their lively Discord channel to boot. Seriously, they have something for everyone to enjoy there and they don't need me to sound like a broken record that they are doing a hell of a great job at what they do. Regardless, I still tip my hat at what Retro Cat gang is up to over on their neck of the woods.

Another example? My buddy Chris Wade has his graphic design business up and running, dubbed VISUALCRACK. He lends his artistic talents to the benefit of both graphic design and musical avenues. Hell, he even has a podcast going too. Dude's making waves on all of those fronts. I couldn't be prouder of my friend. I doubt he knows but I have recommended his work when people have asked me to do graphic design work. (Laughs) I changed majors from graphic design after the first year in college. This dude's much more qualified than me at that stuff. I still fumble my through PhotoShop to this day.

Then there's BouKan and Sn0H. Both them have built their own respective channels on YouTube and/or Twitch and has a loyal, yet faithful viewer base. BouKan is always recording something of some capacity on her YouTube channel and enlightened me of a lot of games I would like to try someday. I envy the hell out of the time she has to play through all of these various titles to 100% completion and to have time to record and edit hundreds of videos to boot. Sn0H hit Twitch Affiliate status last year and got a sponsored spot to stream at Dreamhack Atlanta earlier this year. He's also one-half of the Lazy Gamers channel on YouTube that I guest-starred on their panel at the start of the year. Two content creators that I honored to call my friends, but even better all-round good natured human beings. They've both gone out of their way to offer to help me out from time to time, but I have respectfully declined over the years. Like I keep saying, this is my grave to dig and lay in. I do't want to drag anyone down with me when they already got good things going on their own. No need for me to muddle that up.

My thoughts exactly - one of many reasons I identify more with Squall than Cloud if I'm honest.

I tried to start a community effort on Discord but I felt that project was a complete failure. I ran several communities on that in hope to connect the folks I liked interacting with on one platform but it just drew me to alienate myself from the platform completely. Twitter and Facebook are notorious about various notifications and what not, but when you're the administrator/moderator for said chat boards, it's just downright frustrating that this thing demands like 24/7 of your attention. I would go to bed and wake up to like about 200-300+ notifications on my phone from unread conversations on my servers. See, here's the difference between Discord and traditional message boards. A message board you can just read all of the threads/conversations that you missed at your leisure. Discord on the other hand, demands ALL of your attention no matter what time it is.

God, that line is misquoted horribly. It goes like this:

"If everything truly has gone nuts, then I'll believe in myself and keep fighting."

There lies the problem - I feel like I lose the sense of control of my own creation, thus that triggers my anxiety. I'm in my mid-late thirties and I have lived with anxiety for well over two decades. Situations out of my control is one of my triggers. The simple answer is learning to merely adapt as a sink-or-swim response but tell that to my brain. I have come to accept that I'm just not wired like everyone else. That concept is easy to grasp on paper but to actually do it? (Nervous laughter) Yeah, it's better said than done.

I know someone is going to be a wise ass and say "It's just the internet, get over it..." And that's the kind of insensitivity I don't tolerate. Truth be told, my anxiety got to the point where I despised even entertaining the thought of checking and managing my own servers and even checking notifications and messages. Most of you know how that ended - I deactivated all of them and haven't looked back since. I have seen how Discord has been a benefit for a lot of thriving communities, but for me, it was honestly just a pain in my ass just to micromanage when I have more than enough on my plate as is.

Maybe I should have assigned some mods to police stuff while I'm not around, but you can ask any of my e-fedding friends, I have absolutely next to no trust when it comes to trusting people to do things for me, especially when I've been stabbed in the back at almost every turn when it comes to that stuff. For example, I have some members with VERY limited staff powers on my current e-federation, but I vastly handle everything myself from writing shows, posting results, booking cards, editing/updating the roster lists, etc. I know I'm driving myself crazy and possibly to an early grave but I rather handle it myself or see things spiral out of control again like they have on numerous occasions in the past.

ONE VS. THE WORLD

There's moments where the thought that I'm ultimately wasting my life working on this stuff creeps up into the back of head. Most of the time I can push it aside and continue on with my day to day life, but rough days like the past week, it's hard to ignore. I was binge-watching the entirety of GLOW Season 3 on Netflix last weekend and it really hit home when Ruth (one of the main characters) was doubting her own path in life and wondering if she's been wasting her life up to this point, living others' dreams and not aspiring for her own. I would be lying if I don't think about that almost every time I pick up a gaming controller, flip on the TV, or do remotely anything that's not in association to what I went to college for. I mean, that's normal right? You see your friends getting married and having kids, then making career moves/changes/promotions, and despite your happiness and admiration for your friends, family, and peers' successes, you start wondering, "What the fuck am I doing with my life?"

The ironic thing about this quote is that I used to identify a lot with Heero Yuy when I was younger, but the older I get, the more I realize that I was on Zechs' path that he describes here all along.

If I'm perfectly honest with myself, I started blogging as a justification that I was putting the skills that I went to college for to good use. I have two degrees in Media Arts & Film Studies and Information Technology. I apply my critical and analytical thinking to the stuff I love in nerd culture (gaming, comics, film, etc.) and discussions on professional wrestling while using my web design knowledge on maintaining this site for those skills won't go to waste.

As much as I enjoy blogging, I can't help but be a loss on what to exactly write about more days than not. I read that piece that I linked at the start of this article and I just thought it would be a good idea to just talk from the heart, tell you guys what's going through my head. I'm an introvert - I spend a lot of time to myself as I don't really like letting too many people in. VERY few people get that privilege, but I feel comfortable enough to share tidbits in articles like this from time to time. I've done it on DeviantArt for a few weeks and stopped as I was pretty much just rambling to myself. I remember having a LiveJournal account back in college and I would chronicle everything from day to day endeavors and routines. That too I grew tired of as I felt it became a chore as I was boring myself with it. It was completely private so that's all who I was writing to - an audience of one.

Hmph, a lot of my decisions I've come to regret or have come back to bite me in the ass as of late...

I mentioned one of my anxiety triggers earlier and I have another - clingy people. I've dated some clingy women no problem over the years, but I'm talking about the people who pop up into your mentions, DMs (Direct Messages), or IMs (instant messages) literally the second you log online. That shit gets me every single F'N time, especially when I get home from a hard day of work and just want to turn on the PS4, put on my noise-cancelling headphones and not worry about a goddamn fucking thing for while escaping into the realm of video games for a few hours. But no, you can't tell people to fuck off or leave you alone, that's when you get called a jerk by the vast majority who don't understand what introverts go through on a daily basis. I have to "recharge the batteries" so to speak and take a break from being social. I'm not a social butterfly in the least. I feel bad about sneaking online at random times "invisible" just to check and respond to a few messages and pop right off as I know there's going to be a flood of messages if I did pop online normally. I get it - people care - and I appreciate and value that a lot actually. But clingy people make me feel extremely uncomfortable as if they are forcing their way through my barriers/walls of personal privacy. (Sighs) The only thing I ask is to back up a bit and let me breathe, goddammit.

When I let people in, it's baby steps, much like this blog entry, not all at once. Call me crazy or whatever but that's just how I am. That's why I'm overly cautious about respecting people's boundaries and what not as I don't want anyone to feel like I'm smothering or annoying them with my presence. I get it - people have lives outside of the Internet and have other people they rather spend their precious time with. I don't need to be in constant communication with everything under the sun in everyone's lives. That's one reason why I go out of my way NOT to check Facebook or Twitter at times. There's far too much information about people in the open.

I don't think I will ever understand having that much information about yourself in the open for the Internet can know about you more than you know about yourself, especially from all of this data collection compiling that companies like Google and your ISPs (Internet Service Providers) do on you on a regular basis. At the end of the day, I'm content with sharing with you guys and gals the cool stuff that I have come to enjoy while at the same time, getting personal with my readers on an emotional level to let you know where my head is at times.

For the few of you who have read this from start to finish, thanks for allowing me to bare my soul a bit. To the rest, thank you too for the constant reminder for the audience that I'm playing to.

OPINION -- The Emulation Situation

A few months ago, Nintendo stated that they were going to start aggressively shutting down and punishing ROM sites and other various outlets of "unauthorized" copies of their games floating around the internet. The biggest hit came from the news this week of EmuParadise, one of the biggest and most popular ROM and emulations sites opting to shut their libraries down. This has created a sense of mass paranoia among retro gamers and gamers in general.

I wanted to offer my opinion on this matter as it's something that's going to affect ALL gamers at some point.

I'll start off with a question. What are you going to do when your favorite game is no longer available? Are you going to search countless hours on the Internet, hoping you can snag a deal on a physical copy for your console platform of choice? Or will you simply just pull up the nearest emulation website and just download the desired title at your leisure? Most people are going to go with the later in terms of simplicity and the fact that they don't have to break the bank for one of those rare most-sought-out-after titles.

I would be lying if I said that I have never emulated any video games or downloaded/made any copies of the ones that I own for my own personal enjoyment. At the same time, I'm not going to tell everyone to just scramble out while they can and just buy a Raspberry Pi to preserve the history of the video game industry by downloading every ROM file - old and new - that they can possibly get their hands on.

There's a ton of titles that have eluded me over the years, especially now in retrospect. I regret not buying .hack// Quarantine (Part 4) for PlayStation 2 when it was still at normal retail price instead of the outstanding price it goes for currently online. I can even remember seeing the PlayStation 2 copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 being sold at the local Gamestop Used for $300+, sitting on the shelf plain as day. There's a lot of titles that you're going to have to pay top dollar for physical copies on the second hand market, especially for titles that Sony, Sega, nor Nintendo bothered to provide digital remasters or just simply re-releases of.

A friend of mine gave me his copy of MvC2 on PS2 and I still have it to this day. That pricing is ridiculous, especially when there better ports than the PS2 version out there.

Boy, I wish I bought that back when it was $60 on PS2 originally...

Legit pricing going on Ebay right now for these games...

Here's the thing. All the time I hear gamers left and right throw out that preservation excuse to their emulation needs. Let's be real here. Most people care just as much as preserving the rocks and dirt in their backyard than they do about preserving video games. I run across so many poorly kept gaming consoles in my travels that it just flat out disgusts me. The average person isn't going to play every single console release in their lifetime so this idea of preservation eludes me, when in reality, it's just a facade to show off how big their gaming libraries are and add another feather to their caps to their make-believe digital penis that strokes their egos. At the end of the day, it's just more mental masturbation to help them sleep comfortably in their beds at night.

It's the same mindset as those PC gamers who are always talking about "the Master Race" like this is some kind of competition for superiority when gaming is supposed to ALWAYS be about the great experiences first and foremost that they provide and the platform/consoles themselves be secondary.

No, I don't care about how your keyboard projects a hologram into the air and makes more screens to work on that would make Tony Stark blush. I just want to play the damn game.

Emulation isn't even an accurate form of preservation of this medium. Unless you have the original console(s) and setup like how the developers and creator(s) intended then your argument is moot. On top of that, the majority of the ROMs available on the internet aren't "pure" copies of the original game(s) and have been modified with in some way. It's the same as preservation older films and visual media in film theory. If you're not experiencing the medium in it's classic, original - unaltered - format as how the creator of said media intended it, then it's not historically accurate.

Of course, you're going to have that argument from those people who are anal and sticklers for details who will point out that playing these older games in their original formats is next to impossible in a lot of cases, such as a lot of current generation televisions are HDTV and 4K resolutions only. In that regard, I humbly agree that emulation provides a lot of accessibility for both gamers and preservationists. Some of these platforms are unable to be experienced in their original format today. That's a problem that will continue to increase as time wears on.

Guess who's NOT buying that for a dollar? This guy right here...

I'm not going to sugarcoat this when I say that Nintendo are scam artists. At the same time, they are smart when it comes to supply and demand. They always seem to create a shortage of supply when it's something their fan base, especially the nostalgia hungry ones, want to make it a top dollar item on the secondary market, thanks to it's "limited" release (those "rare" Amiibos say hello, especially when those were ranging as low as $1 to $5 when Toys R Us was going out of business a few months ago. Boy, I know the folks who paid the extra dough to import those things for triple or quadruple of their retail value online feel stupid now), only to go reverse the decision a few months to a year later with the same product back in circulation. It's annoying as fuck to their consumers but you can't deny that it works - hook, line, and sinker - EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

That being said, Nintendo are the biggest culprits when it comes to being stingy about the availability of their consoles' back library. I'm not sure if the Switch has a Virtual Console like the Wii and Wii U before it and even if it did, Nintendo would probably be just as picky and selective on titles for that as they've been in years past. I can't fathom how pissed off their fan base were to find out that they were sitting on a complete working version of Star Fox 2 for the SNES for roughly three decades now, only to pull that magic trick out of their hats when the SNES Classic needed another shot of the cannon to sell more units. That goes without saying that the SNES Classic, much like the NES Classic before it, was going to be a sought after item regardless out of pure nostalgia. It holds a mere faction of the titles that a Raspberry Pi can hold (after hacking the console it can be made to hold and run more titles), but the joy of having the nostalgia of this product simply can't be matched. The feeling of holding a genuine NES/SNES controller in your hands while you fire up the SNES/NES for an afternoon of gaming delight is a welcome memory to a lot of gamers, especially those that have grown up and have children of their own that they would pass that experience down to.

Nintendo cracking down on piracy of their products and infringements of copyright on their media from streamers isn't the first case of this and it definitely won't be the last. You can't even stream nor upload video content from any Nintendo products on YouTube without it getting flagged. Evolution Championship Series, the biggest fighting game annual tournament series, almost got their ENTIRE Smash Bros. tournament shut down a few years ago from even being shown on the tournament live feed until Nintendo execs got involved and reversed the decision from the sheer backlash it was causing in the news. They've mellowed out on that front for the sake of the Smash community, but it hasn't stopped Nintendo sweeping in and laying down the law wherever they see fit. Another instance of this was the fan-made remake to Metroid II: Return of Samus, AM2R (Another Metroid II Remake), was issued a DMCA notice to the sites that were hosting that game (which was free-to-play and completely non-profit from my understanding) and immediately got it taken down a day later. Then don't get me started on how many Let's Play "YouTubers" who stream and upload exclusively Nintendo-based content got their content flagged and their channels suspended. Nintendo's been on this witch hunt for a long time and aren't showing any signs of slowing down.

What's ironic that in the wake of Nintendo cracking down on piracy, they have actually profited off of emulation in the past. Some media outlets have reported that the Wii Virtual Console version of the original Super Mario Bros. (NES) is reportedly an emulator download that Nintendo took liberty to resell for their own profit. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the first time, nor will it be the last time when it comes to stuff like that from not only Nintendo but the gaming industry as a whole.

In the wake of those events, I saw what EmuParadise did as a preventative measure. They wanted to dodge the bullet before it even came out of the chamber. It's similar to what happened to both the original iterations of KickAssTorrents and Pirate Bay a few years ago. They got shut down by the feds cracking down on Internet piracy, only to pop up again stronger than ever. I mean, c'mon let's face facts here. People are ALWAYS going to find a way to get something for free over the Internet. EmuParadise may have stopped providing to the masses, but that's not going to stop anyone else from finding a healthy supply of ROMs floating around on the Internet. If you're that hard-up for emulation, I suggest keeping your eyes out for a few big torrent files that people are going to start dumping online to accommodate for EmuParadise going down to keep the emulation game going strong.

Am I saying that what Nintendo is doing okay? No, but I see the method of their madness so to speak. They want to keep control of preserving their own history instead of leaving it to independent individuals making a profit off their licensed content. Trusting that preservation entirely to Nintendo is a fool's errand though as many developers in Japan and not just former Nintendo employees and/or collaborators have spoken out in interviews over the years stating that it's difficult to preserve their own work when the physical copies just keep disappearing, never to be seen again. That's even harder for mother boards from old arcade machines or the CD-Roms from first generation disk-based games when that physical medium erodes after a few years.

There's a few true preservationists out there, such as Byuu, who created the SNES emulator higan, who was preserving every SNES physical release until he was slowed down by UPS mysteriously lost his package. He's got the package back since the first few reports came out, but Byuu is renown name within the retro gaming community for his efforts to preserve gaming's history and continues to contribute to the emulation end of the spectrum.

Speedrunners, such as TheMexicanRunner, have adopted the standing of being a "purist" to the medium as well. TheMexicanRunner is known for chronicling his journey to complete (or at least play until it's considered "complete" by gamers' standards for some of those titles that recycle/reuse data infinitely) EVERY original NES release by cartridges donated to him and those that he bought under his own accord. Undertaking this chore has inspired him to legitimately own all of those titles and he's almost done with that to my knowledge. That's what I regard being a "purist" to preserving the history of this medium, not downloading a stockpile of ROMs to run on emulators on your suped up PC, only to play them with an USB-powered PlayStation 2 controller or Sega Saturn/Genesis 6-button controller that isn't even native to that console generation then get the fuck outta here with that noise. That's not being a purist, that's your own personal preference to the experience - HUGE difference there.

Preservation of this medium is going to be the key for the years to come. Many are going to see Nintendo's witch hunt as an attack on gamers, but at the same time, some of the gamers up in arms are the ones to blame for the lack of care and delicacy that these consoles and games deserve to continue working for years on end. My parents bought me a NES back in roughly 1987 and it still works perfectly fine without a hitch to this day in 2018. How many of you can say that your original NES is still working and doesn't have discoloring and/or any damage at all? We as gamers are just as responsible for preserving the history of this medium as the companies that manufactured them. The blame here is a two way street and a lot of people seem to be having tunnel vision on that matter. Nintendo aren't innocent in this conversation as well, when there has been time tested proof that Nintendo has gone as far as selling ROMs to their consumers that was plucked off the Internet instead of the original medium, leaving them as guilty as gamers for this emulation crime.

A sensible solution would be some archive hosting somewhere that allows gamers and the companies tied to them to trade, exchange, catalog these snippets of gaming history for the generations of gamers to come. Even I don't want to admit this, but the physical media isn't going to last forever. Somehow, someway, the gaming industry as a whole - along with the support of the gamers that love these beloved games - past, present, and future - need to work together to ensure that these games don't disappear forever.

YouTube Channel's Down!!?? No New Content!!?? What's Going on, ZX? -- Allow Me To Explain

I just wanted to take a moment and air what has transpired with my YouTube channel for this blog, along with recapping my last few weeks...

The whole ordeal has been discussed in length on this blog's Discord channel, so to make a long story short, on June 7, 2018, I received not one but FOUR messages all at once that my account has been disabled. Then my Google+ account (which I don't even fucking use BTW...) looks like this, yet I can't access nor do anything with my old videos.

So, I'm like whatever, I'll just appeal since I haven't done anything wrong. I don't even profit off anything on my channel and the few things that I have been warned about have that "This is just a heads up. Don't worry. You're not in trouble and your account standing is not affected by this." message attached to it. The last one of those emails I received was back at the start of March, so if that was a problem it should have been mentioned back then. I'm racking my brain on what in the world that I could have done wrong and simply filled out a repeal.

I go into my usual routine of web browsing and notice that Shoryuken and Eventhubs were reporting that Level Up | Series had their channel taken down in the same fashion. I think "Cool, so I'm not the only one with this BS going on..."

A few hours later and Level Up gets their account back to normal while I'm looking at a juicy fat rejection notice as the response to my repeal on my account. Well, FML...

So yeah... 500+ videos down the drain of roughly 5 years of work streaming and recording content. I'm just at a loss of words. I still am to be quite honest. I guess I should be fortunate that my laptop has been archiving SOME of my older streams (back when I was still using my Roxio Game Capture) in folder tucked away hidden into my Windows directory, so there's something to shuffle through to see if that content is worth keeping or not.

Every time I think about this situation, it frustrates me on a lot of levels. It was my personal collection of fun times that I've had in games as of late, others that I shared with friends, such as my co-op Borderlands and various fighting game streams that were archived. Stuff that I've broadcasted directly from PlayStation 4, such as the bulk of the Horizon Zero Dawn playthrough (outside of the Frozen Wilds DLC that I just happened to save as a highlight on my channel), Batman Arkham Knight, Shovel Knight, No More Heroes, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and more recently, the bulk of my Monster Hunter World streams (which I've devoted a lot of time into), all down the drain for nothing.

It's hard to get motivated to stream again... I'll be honest about that. What's more frustrating about this situation that I literally just bought an El Gato H60S just for streaming more games along with HDMI converters for both my Wii and PlayStation 2, only to have this mess throw me completely off the race track. It's hard to get back into the drivers' seat and start back again at this from what feels like from scratch at Day One.

Friends have encouraged me to try some alternatives to YouTube, such as Vimeo or Mixlr, but I just can't even find the positive energy to even get the ball rolling again. Hell, I keep thinking about this situation. I'm a general nobody on YouTube, Twitch, and social media (despite 800+ followers/Likes on both the Let's Talk Wrestling Blog Facebook and Twitter accounts that I'm sure is mostly bots/spam accounts anyway...) and this devastated what little momentum and drive I had. I can't imagine what this would do to a full-time podcaster/streamer that have been burning at both ends on this for as long as the Level Up crew have been at this. With that realization, I felt that it's time to just focus and channel my energies into something else for a while.

I was going to cover/talk about E3 but nothing this year honestly stuck out to me as something I have to get immediately at launch. I guess I should count that as a blessing. That means I have a few months of actually having time to catch up on things in my gaming backlog from the past few years. Plus, E3 brings out the worst in terms of gaming culture it seems, especially from the journalists end of it and the ass-hats who argue over the "best" gaming platforms like this is the racial draft from Chappelle's Show or something. Get the fuck over yourselves and realize that the console doesn't matter, just support great games no matter what platform they are on.

I spent the better part of the last two weeks, exporting, editing, proofreading, and re-reading some of my old stories and content on FictionPress. Saved the stories (notably Fighting Power, Rebel Unit VVG, and Bullets, Blades, and Blood) on my Google Drive and set out to divide them up into chapters in one singular document, along with unused/unreleased content that I had saved in inboxes from old/dead Yahoo! email accounts. I even took the time to even FINALLY update and configure my Deviantart account that I've had for the better part of a decade and never did anything with. Yeah, I follow a TON of artists on there, but never post anything of my own. I changed that by archiving some of my old sketchbook scans from my personal Facebook account on there. (Shrugs) It's a start.

After taking notes and re-reading through the entirety of my original run of my Bullets, Blades, and Blood story, I finally got off my ass and typed up the Teaser #2 for the pending reboot/revamp that I have been sitting on for about a year and half and released it yesterday morning. The original teaser was about 3+ years ago, so this was long overdue to say that I have had the bulk of this handwritten already. I'm already working on a "cheat sheet" of sorts where I'm listing all of the characters I plan on including in this story along with a short description/bullet points on their powers and what-not. Y'know, something to keep my mind buzzing and focused on this project that I've been sitting on for long enough.

First attempt at a render in IRay. Damn laptop froze while rendering when I left it on while I was asleep so only got this partial file. Outside of the odd shading on the face, I thought it wasn't bad for a first attempt. My main focus was seeing how the costume looked in output. I swear I HATE how there's little options for male models in terms of hairstyles but you can find hundreds of ones for females. (Shrug) Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.
First "complete" render. Just was combining a few parts around and simply seeing how my laptop could handle rendering with a few basic settings. Not crazy about this one, but it's a learning process y'know?

As you can see above, I have been trying my hand at Daz3D/Daz Studio. I've started with mostly Genesis 3 Male/Female models, along with Michael 7 and Victoria 7 for what that you will see here.  I've had it for the better part for over a year, but recently really trying to break into it, especially after what transpired. I could name a lot of Deviantart artists who create stuff on this program, which ranges from SFW to definitely NSFW content, that I simply adore and I would love to create some content in this if possible.

Attempt at a black female model, while simultaneously messing around with the body morphing settings. Looks good right? Okay, look at the output image below...

IRay did some freaky shit there on the output and I have no idea what I did wrong there. Pretty much a LOT of trial and error with this thing. (Sighs) At least the hair looks nice... Either way, back to the drawing board.

Here's my most recent attempt below.

Pre-render screenshot, top got distorted after loading the pose for this scene. Ended up attempting like 6 other tops to the same effect.
(Sighs) More likely going to have to go with a different pose in a future update anyway.
Output render. I'm pleased with this for the most part, but the more I look at it there's stuff I can touch up. i.e. The hands can be tightened more around the hilts of the katanas, I could adjust her feet a bit in the back from how she's sitting, relayer/rearrange the corset top to layer below the rest of the armor, and so on.

I swear, it's driving me nuts that I can't find a simple ninja mask separate from all of these older Daz3D packs that would auto-fit to my models properly.

I get it. I'm not great at this yet, but I'm trying, dammit. Just doing something to keep the ball rolling. I just need to keep reading on this program and watching YouTube tutorials.

Watch Testing Out El Gato Capture Card from xionzeros on www.twitch.tv

Monday night (June 18), I tested out my El Gato H60S for the first time with Monster Hunter World since one of my friends informed me the Arch Tempered Elder Dragon Kirin event was ending on the 21st, so I wanted to try my hand at it. I have to iron out the broadcast settings (of course...) but I thought it wasn't a bad first attempt. I dunno, maybe I can ease back into the swing of things. It's just that I doubt I'm going to bother exporting everything to another site, only to go through this heartbreak, or rather headache again. I'll just simply save every other broadcast down as a highlight for my few viewers on Twitch can have something to check out when I'm not streaming.

As for the huge gap in new articles/content, this ordeal should explain where my head has been at. I have a few articles on the past weekend's worth of WWE programming, including NXT TakeOver: Chicago II and WWE Money in the Bank 2018 pending in my drafts, so look for those in the next few days. I just have to keep committing myself to work on something else and quit focusing on the negativity.

God, I need a weekend away from everything and just to myself to hit the reset button... So yeah, gimme a bit to get back into the swing of things. I'm just completely not in the zone currently.
