Five of My Favorite Holiday Themed Media

Christmas is finally here and you've overcome the masses from last minute shopping for gifts and food for the Christmas feast, but you're looking for something to enjoy while you recuperate on the couch with your loved ones. Maybe I could help in that regard... While I've been pretty light on new content over the last few weeks - swamped actually in terms of little to no free time if I'm perfectly honest - I did want to share this short article for my birthday today, discussing a few of my favorite holiday-themed specials across popular media.

By the way, I have no idea if the videos linked here will be taken down or not but I want to clarify that they are NOT my own content, so don't scold me for sharing. Spectacular Spider-Man was on Disney+ last I checked and Batman: The Animated Series/New Batman Adventures are on the DC Universe Online streaming app.

The New Batman Adventures - "Holiday Knights"

On December 22, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy contemplate their ill fate close to the festivities. Aware that hiding away in a scuzzy hotel is not up to their standards, Ivy comes up with a plan that will make them enjoy their Holidays.

Moments later, Bruce Wayne finds himself surrounded by high society ladies at Veronica Vreeland's party and during their inappropriate reaction, Bruce is kissed by a mysterious woman. Upon leaving the party, Bruce goes to his vehicle, but he is compelled to stop midway and get inside Harley and Ivy's car. Ivy was the mysterious woman who kissed Bruce, dosing him with a special chemical, which turns Bruce into an obedient person to their wishes.

Like this, Harley and Ivy take advantage of Bruce and they go on a shopping spree, wasting a great part of Bruce's money. After a long session, Ivy and Harley take Bruce to a hotel, but the effects of the chemical start to wear off. Harley tries to give Bruce another dose, but Bruce backs away from her until he falls inside an empty elevator shaft and is apparently killed. As the two ladies get away from the crime scene, Batman starts chasing them.

The girls notice the Dark Knight on their trail and the lead him into a toy store. With all the lights out, Harley and Ivy take advantage of the darkness and use the environment as a weapon against Batman and after apparently defeating the hero, they hurry to the exit. Batman recovers in time to use his batrope and cause a big Christmas tree to fall on top of Harley and Ivy, stopping them from getting away.

On December 24, Barbara Gordon is making some late Christmas shopping when she suddenly notices a small kid shoplifting. When she tries to stop him, the kid's hand dissolves in her hand, leaving her baffled. Meanwhile, Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya are posing as Santa and his elf, when they are informed of the unusual activities. Several small kids have been shoplifting all over the mall and when they are cornered by Bullock and Montoya, they come together to form Clayface.

Barbara notices this and finds an unseen spot to change into Batgirl. Bullock and Montoya are no match for Clayface, who is then kicked by Batgirl and sent to the outside of the mall, breaking the ice-skating ring below. Clayface recovers soon and Batgirl instructs Bullock and Montoya to shoot the power lines, which drop on Clayface and electrocute him, leaving him unconscious long enough for Bullock to retrieve the stolen items from Clayface's body.

On December 31, Commissioner Gordon shows Batman a recorded threat sent by the Joker, who is apparently going to kill millions of people. Thanks to information provided by Gordon, Batman deduces that Joker will strike at Gotham Square.

Batman and Robin arrive at the place, but they are stumped when they realize that all the peole celebratingNew Year's Eve are wearing Joker masks, making it almost impossible to distinguish the real Joker. Eventually, Batman is able to recognize Joker and his goons thanks to the information given by Gordon.

Batman and Robin then fight Joker and his men, ending their evil plans and destroying the killing machine.

A few hours after midnight, on January 1, Commissioner Gordon goes inside a tavern, where he waits until Batman shows up for their annual meeting. After a quick exchange and a hot drink, Gordon prepares to leave, but unaware to him, Batman is already gone, leaving the tab behind. A bit frustrated, yet pleased, Gordon goes home as Batman swings back into the night.

I'm sure most people will go with "Christmas with the Joker" as their favorite holiday themed episode of Batman: The Animated Series, but the three non-related holiday stories from The New Batman Adventures here that served as the formal introduction to this series are at the top of my list of favorite holiday narratives. That look of absolute rage when Harley and Ivy had Bruce brainwashed to spend his money on them shopping will never stop being hilarious to me.

I don't get why Jim gets upset that Bats always leaves promptly and pays for their bill. At least he's always the one paying. It could be worse... That rich bastard could leave Jim with the bill every year.

Freakazoid - "In Arms Way"

Freakazoid's Christmas shopping is interrupted by Arms Akimbo's crime spree.

I still quote parts of this episode to this day to friends and it saddens me that next to no one gets where it's from. Freakazoid was so ahead of it's time at the birth of the popularity of the internet. I would love to see this show come back in some capacity now that memes are at an all-time high when Freakazoid himself was a living meme.

You can't go wrong with Oops insurance, folks.

Spectacular Spider-Man - "Reinforcement"

As Christmas approaches, the Sinister Six reconstitutes under the Master Planner with Sandman, Rhino, Vulture, Electro, and new members Mysterio and Kraven. All they want for Christmas is Spider-Man — destroyed. Meanwhile, Peter Parker finds his wandering eye prevents him from being with Gwen Stacy. He'll have to learn to focus if he wants to get the girl, and if he wants to stay alive.

Sure, this isn't a full blown Christmas special, but I get a kick out of that scene linked above between Spidey versus Sandman and Rhino. It just serves as one of many reminders of the excellence that was Spectacular Spider-Man. Besides, who doesn't love these battles against all of the Sinister Six in this series? At least in this one, the Venom symbiote doesn't have Spidey's body on auto-pilot.

SpongeBob Squarepants - "Christmas Who?"

As long as SpongeBob has been around, I still feel like the series was at it's peak of it's charm and hilarity in it's first few seasons before Nickelodeon ran it into the ground to present. FYI the bulk of the memes and quotes that people use in memes are from the first few seasons anyway.

I can't ever get this song out of my head either when I hear it. My oldest niece used to sing it all the time when I would babysit her around the holidays too in her childhood years. So that's another reason why this Christmas special will always be a favorite of mine.

Married... With Children - "It's a Bundyful Life" (Parts 1 & 2)

(Part 1) Al has finally saved up some cash to buy his family Christmas presents this year. Unfortunately, a mob of late customers in the shoe store prevents him from getting to the bank in time and retrieving the money he needs.

(Part 2) Al's guardian angel shows him what life would be like for Peggy and the kids if he'd never been born, a question Al posed after a drunken Marcy left him with no money for the gifts he promised.

Married... With Children has at least nine (or more) holiday themed episodes and while I love all of them (save for the one where the mall Santa lands in their backyard as IMO that's the weakest of these specials), this two-parter that serves as a hilarious parody of "It's a Wonderful Life" always manages to give me a good laugh. I always remember seeing this two-parter as one hour long episode, but occasionally split up in reruns over the years.

The sad part is that Sam Kinison who plays Al's guardian angel died shortly after playing this role, so this is one of the last performances of his career was appearing in this iconic American sitcom.

PREVIEW -- MEGALOBOX 2 in development - Official Teaser

I have always been a sucker for these "competitive sports" themed animes and Megalobox was no different. Given the way the original series ended, I wanted to see how Joe's career would fair following the events of the finale. I'm glad to see that this is getting a sequel of sorts.

FYI you can watch the original Megalobox on the Tubi television app for FREE, but just keep in mind that it's in Japanese with english subtitles. For some people they would prefer it that way, but I thought the English dub that aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block was superb. I figured I would tip some people off about that though.

Can't say that I would have much use for the Defender armor, but that's pretty cool that Capcom added something to help newer players get up to speed and be able to join the action with everyone else in Iceborne. I'm hoping this armor ends up being a layered armor set down the road though.

I finally had a chance to look at the stats of these weapons in-game and these are easily double the attack power of anything you can craft in the base game of Monster Hunter World - at least starting out anyway. If you have any trouble catching up with this powerful gear then something is clearly wrong.

As hyped as I was to see more Horizon Zero Dawn-themed gear and weapons in this new collaboration, I'm a little disappointed that they didn't bother to reskin Zinogre for the first part of the collaboration as a Scorcher from Horizon Zero Dawn's Frozen Wilds DLC. I do appreciate that we're getting Master Rank updates to the Palico gear along with Aloy's War Bow in this new collaboration, not to mention Frostclaw armor for our Palicos and the popular Banuk tribe's armor from Horizon Zero Dawn in this game too.

When players completed the quest for Stygian Zinogre, they were treated with an additional "surprise" of sorts. The Guild had stumbled onto a new discovery - namely a matured Xeno'jiiva. The community has dubbed this new monster "Safi'jiiva" but the developers here has clearly stated that this new monster has not been named.

If you haven't guessed already, but this new monster will serve as Iceborne's version of the Kulve Taroth seige event quest in the Gathering Hub. The major difference being that players are GUARANTEED a weapon reward for the class they are using when they slay the creature. This "awakened" weapon (along with the armor) will have an unspecified skill when unsheathed, but the weapons will take weapon augmentations to the next level. Each of these awakened weapons will have five customizable skill slots that can be swapped out to players' liking. The devs expect these weapons will be players' go-to weapons from here on out from how versatile they will be with various armor builds and skills.

The "tutorial" for this new siege event quest can be played as many times as players wish, but the real deal will start December 13th and run to Jan. 5, 2020.

PREVIEW -- Overwatch 2 | Zero Hour Reveal & Gameplay Trailers

I have said it since the original Overwatch launched that I absolutely adore their character designs, especially their passion to express diversity too that doesn't come off forced in the least. Blizzard has all of these wonderful characters, filled to the brim with emotion, only to be shackled to a game that ENTIRELY tied to PvP FPS gameplay. All of the interest I had investing in the original game went out of the window. It was the same crap that bogged the original Titanfall down. Of course, you're going to have the people who say but there's the Overwatch Animated Shorts and lore scattered throughout the maps in PvP modes. Fuck that noise. If you got time to do all of these elaborate backstories for these characters then I want some sort of a Story Mode this game. All of these characters demand it, despite how much personality they show off during matches. I'm not going to knock that the game became a global PvP phenomenon without any sort of a single player story component, but I just felt Blizzard alienated themselves in a sense when they decided to go the same route as Team Fortress 2 of making a team-based shooter with no story component. As much money (and still do) Blizzard makes off this game and the merchandise, I have to think that they left money on the table when they decided not to have a story mode for this game. Look at Tumblr or DeviantArt for Overwatch content and you'll find a wealth of people crafting their own fan-made lore and art for the game - when it's not fucking porn involving every character under the sun for this game... Speaking of that, there's more adult-oriented art for this game than any of the Pandora's Boxes you would open by Googling Sonic the Hedgehog, My Little Pony, or Ben 10 on any search engine without a mature content filter toggled on.

Seeing a trailer like this just reinforces the fact that this game would benefit from a story mode to flesh these characters out even further. They got me to care more about these characters in the span of 8-9 minutes than I have out of the entirety of the time the initial game was out in this series. This was just an excellent trailer from start to finish.

Remember what I was saying a minute ago about Overwatch needing a story mode? I wish you guys could see how fast my jaw dropped when I saw that was one of the first things announced for this sequel. Okay, Blizzard, you got my interest for sure now. Doubt that I'm going to go out of my way to buy this like so many people I know who play this regularly to this day, but I would love to see the story mode for this play out. Even if I merely just Redbox the game a few times, I would be down for those co-op story missions just to play as all of the different characters Overwatch brings to the table with their different personalities at play.

PREVIEW -- TEKKEN 7 - Fahkumram, Ganryn, DLC Tekken World Tour Finals Reveal Trailers | PS4, X1, PC

During the Tekken World Tour finals on Sunday, December 8, 2019, producer Michael Murray and Katsuhiro Harada took the stage in Bangkok Thailand - and in traditional fashion, hyped up the crowd with some hot TEKKEN 7 announcements and trailers for the newest additions joining the TEKKEN 7 roster.

At first glance, I thought this was a new version of Bruce Irvin from Tekken 2, but as the trailer went on, I could tell this dude is in his own element. He's like Tekken's own version of Street Fighter V's Necali in a sense - a savage, untamed beast of a man honed to perfection in combat. About time they made up a new character to give Bryan and Craig a run for their money in terms of intimidation.

I had honestly forgotten about Ganryu's crush on Michelle Chang way back in Tekken 2 until Tekken Tag Tournament 2 came around. It's funny to see he's moved his affections towards "stanning" for Julia Chang's streaming efforts in Tekken 7. I got a good laugh out of this - more than I thought I would have initially. I think Ganryu's a character that no one asked for, but this was funny nonetheless.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I know most players are going to flock to this character. Out of the three reveals, this is the one that got me the most hype, even though they had to give him the most stereotypical "black" name ever. I can't wait to see what people do with this character in high level play.

All of this will be available TODAY as of the publishing of this article.

PREVIEW -- Ghostbusters: Afterlife - Official Trailer

While I'm happy to see that this is teasing that this film is canonically the third film in the original timeline of original two Ghostbusters films, I'm not instantly nerdgasming over the fact that the kid from Netflix's Stranger Things (Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things) is in this like most people. We saw him wearing one of the Busters' costumes for Halloween in that show. That doesn't make him INSTANTLY qualified to be one of the Ghostbusters. If you ask me, Mike has been one of the most boring characters in the last three seasons of that show, despite his relationship with Eleven, but that's a subject for discussion for another day. I don't doubt Wolfhard's acting chops, but I do doubt trusting this franchise's future on the shoulders' of  a team of "children and/or teen angst" when people were (and still are) quick to write off an all-female Ghostbusters team.

To the relief of many, that 2016 film was a remake and doesn't exist in this continuity, even though I'm going to be sad that we won't see Kate McKinnon's Dr. Jillian Holtzmann in any capacity in another Ghostbusters' film. She was one of the only good things about that film that gets more shit from fans directed to the actresses that starred in it than the numb-skull who directed it, Paul Weig. To be fair though, Leslie Jones is digging her own grave for her comments comparing how the 2016 film being dismissed as being "Trump-like". Let's not even go that route. If the Nickelodeon-made TMNT film can get a sequel, then I have no doubts about some studio wanting to drop some dough on a sequel to the 2016 Ghostbusters film. Stranger things (no pun intended) have happened. Seriously... We got a damn Independence Day sequel roughly a decade after the fact that no one asked for. So never say never.

As for this trailer, it's a great tease and throwback to the original films, but I'm still pretty skeptical despite smiling after seeing the Ecto-1 back in action after all of these years. We haven't seen the "team" (of kids or even Paul Rudd's character possibly acting as the mentor figure) in action and have no idea what they are going to be up against, even though it was pretty obvious that Zuul's Terror Dogs were haunting the kids at one point of the trailer. It's hilarious to mention that Zuul was teased during the credits as that what the all-female team of Ghostbusters was going to face next in a sequel. Egon Spengler (played by Harold Ramis in the original two films, who died in 2012) - Wolfhard and McKenna Grace will be portraying his grandchildren in this actually - always speculated and theorized about multiple parallel realities and dimensions due to paranormal activities and phenomenons; so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities that they could throw in the ladies into this film for a cameo. I just would hate to see the Pandora's box of negativity that would open up to get that in this when the franchise is looking to get back into fans' good graces again.

Don't get me wrong though. I think a teenage team of Ghostbusters could work. Remember Extreme Ghostbusters? A new team with one of the original members in a mentor role? With Ramis' Egon off the table, then it would have to be someone else for sure. In either case, we won't be waiting long to see how this turns out. It's going to be out summer 2020.

PREVIEW -- Wonder Woman 1984 | Official Trailer

At first, I didn't know what to make of this trailer last night when I first watched it. After rewatching it another two times, I think I understand what they are going for.

Maxwell Lord (The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) are the two main villains for this film as Diana copes with continuing to move on following the demise of her friends and allies in her original film - namely Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). But wait, we see Steve Trevor in this trailer!? I think that's what this film WANTS us to think. It's a clever "twist" of sorts as the comic book version of Maxwell Lord has telepathic powers. Throughout this trailer, he's going on about "making sure to give everyone what they want the most". For Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, she wants nothing more than to spend time with the man she loved the most. Steve Trevor could exist as entirely in her head (much like The Joker in Batman: Arkham Knight), until she comes to her senses. I can see how Maxwell Lord's manipulative actions could coerce the nerdy archaeologist (the Dr. Barbara Minerva version of the Cheetah) that Diana spoke with about love into giving her what she wants most - clearly envious of Wonder Woman's fame and beauty, only to whatever Lord does to her to backfire and transform her into The Cheetah.

The golden armor (from the Kingdom Come storyline of the same name) that Diana dons by the end of the trailer is call back to the comics, but she's going to need that if the Cheetah is going to be as powerful of an opponent to take down as I'm expecting by the time the credits roll.

Even though I fall into the minority that weren't overly impressed with her initial live-action cinematic debut, I think this COULD be promising. The biggest issue I see this film dealing with is going to be convincing people of the plothole left from her debut in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice where she told Bruce Wayne that she wasn't in action in over 40 years. No one isn't going to forget seeing a star-pangled themed Amazonian warrior fighting crime. That's something that would be the talk of the town, even well before the internet came into existence. Is it just me or does Gal Gadot look thinner in this film than in the original when she was reportedly pregnant when they shot that film? Jesus Christ, I thought she would have put on some muscle mass for this part by now...

WWE Survivor Series 2019 (Nov. 24, 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Survivor Series (2019) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and WWE Network event, produced by WWE for their Raw, SmackDown, and NXT brands. It took place on November 24, 2019 at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. It was the 33rd event under the Survivor Series chronology, the first to feature the NXT brand (including NXT's sister brand NXT UK, which was grouped under the NXT umbrella), the first to feature Survivor Series matches with wrestlers from three brands since 2009, and the first to feature triple threat Survivor Series elimination matches. Like previous years, the theme of the event was brand supremacy and featured matches involving wrestlers from the brands against each other.

Survivor(s):Candice LeRaeIo Shirai, and Rhea Ripley (Team NXT)

Just looking at the teams for this match, one would assume that RAW has this in the bag - especially with the fact that Rhea Ripley went to war with half of her teammates in this match the night prior. You knew Team SmackDown didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning this when they announced that Carmella and Dana Brooke of all people were on the team. I get they have to balance our heels and faces, but Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville would've been better choices than those two.

I was a little annoyed that we get one of the first post-Mae Young Classic and Evolution appearances of Toni Storm on the main roster and the commentary team doesn't treat it like a big deal at all. I did mark the hell out for the brief exchange between Io Shirai and Kairi Sane. Kairi's heel turn is such a wonderful new direction for her in this company. I can't praise that enough. She doesn't come off as a preteen in there with grown women like how Riho does on AEW. The change in demeanor helps convey that she's just as much of a lethal force as Asuka. If Vince isn't going to do anything full-time with the Kabuki Warriors on the main roster, then I vote for Triple H to take them back to NXT and get a heel faction going of Asuka, Kairi, and Io. (Shrugs) I dunno, maybe they could do their own version of Lucha Underground's Black Lotus Triad faction. Those three clearly have history together and it would be smart to make bank on it before they lose all three back to Stardom when their contracts are up.

A nice tease worth revisiting down the road in a few more years.

I was shocked as all hell that they let Lacey Evans pin Charlotte - mist or no mist. That's one hell of a badge of honor to give her for that elimination. I did like that Natalya was Team RAW's MVP, even though it's not going to amount to nothing from how Natalya's been mismanaged and poorly booked over the years.

I honestly thought the injury spot with Io Shirai and Candice LeRae was legit, especially from what those women went through during WarGames, but they came back to assist Rhea Ripley in the closing moments of the match. It just irks me in these "brand supremacy" angles that the heels and babyfaces have to act like best friends when in reality, most people would be stabbing each other in the back across the board instead of on one team here and there. We would see more of that in the men's elimination match later in the night though.

Champions Triple Threat Match
Roderick Strong (NXT's North American Champion) defeated AJ Styles (Raw's United States Champion) and Shinsuke Nakamura (SmackDown's Intercontinental Champion) (with Sami Zayn)

I honestly can't remember if all three of these men have faced off in a triple threat when they shared together in Ring of Honor before migrating over to WWE, but this was the match was most invested in seeing over anything else when this card was announced. They didn't go "all out" as expected by WWE standards, but this was a good match nonetheless. I was guessing they were saving something on the table if they were to pick this up down the road whenever the Undisputed Era was called up the main roster proper - or whenever Styles and Nakamura are brought back into NXT full-time.

NXT Championship Match
Adam Cole (c) def. Pete Dunne

I don't see how Adam Cole was able to come out here and kill it with another stellar performance after nearly dying in WarGames the night prior. This was easily the best match of the evening without a shadow of a doubt. If you don't watch anything else on this show, do yourself a favor and watch this match.

WWE Universal Championship Match
"The Fiend" Bray Wyatt (c) def. Daniel Bryan

Between the red lights and Bryan throwing everything at this guy when we've seen Rollins attempt murder on the Fiend multiple times and he still kicks out, I don't see how WWE expects people to stay interested. Besides, WWE would have to be crazy to take the belt off Bray one month after winning it, so I didn't see this match going anywhere. It wasn't bad - it was just there.

5-on-5-on-5 Men's Survivor Series Triple Threat elimination match
Team SmackDown (Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, King Corbin, Mustafa Ali, and Shorty G) defeated Team Raw (Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, and Ricochet) and Team NXT (Tommaso Ciampa, Damian Priest, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, and Walter)

Survivor(s):Roman Reigns (Team SmackDown)

Without even doing a damn thing, WALTER was the most over person in this match before the bell even rung. Then they eliminated him right off the bat without even getting a goddamn move in. That's up there with that time William Regal got eliminated so fast in one of these Survivor Series matches that Layla (who was managing him at the time) stood up on the ring apron and threw her shoe at CM Punk in protest.

Why book him in the match when they were going to do that to him? Seems like a massive waste to fly him all the way in from the UK just to do that. Shorty G got the same treatment as he was getting over, only to be promptly eliminated by Kevin Owens. After Randy Orton quickly eliminated Damian Priest, only to be taken out by Matt Riddle - who was taken out by Baron Corbin, it became crystal clear that a lot of these eliminations were done to generate heat and not any good heel heat either. It's not like WWE needs anymore "OMG this is stupid, I'm changing the channel" or "Fuck this, I'm not watching anymore..." heat on their programming. It turned out that Baron Corbin was sabotaging the match to attempt to take credit for every elimination for his own merit until he was laid out by Roman Reigns and allowed to be eliminated by Tommaso Ciampa.

I didn't understand why Team RAW were so welcoming for Kevin Owens when he helped NXT out the night prior. He should've thrown his own team under the bus and defected over to the black and gold brand.

While Rhea Ripley had a star making performance during WarGames and during the opener in the Women's 5 v 5 v 5 match, Keith Lee was the breakout star from NXT for the men. He looked right at home hanging with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. My jaw was hanging open when he actually eliminated Seth Rollins clean here. You know Vince has to foaming at the mouth with anticipation to use that big guy on the main roster. He's big, can move around like a cruiserweight, AND has charisma and a presence like The Rock? Even though they had me fooled a few times that Keith Lee was actually going to get a pinfall over Roman Reigns too, but that ended on a fun note. To say that this match started off with some groan-inducing spots with the first half of the eliminations, the match finally came together by the end though.

I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't mind seeing this match-up again down the road in a few years.

No Holds Barred Match for the WWE Championship
Brock Lesnar (c) w/ Paul Heyman def. Rey Mysterio

After all of these matches and repeated Low Blows, you would think that Brock Lesnar would learn - or at least get some council from Paul Heyman - to start wearing a goddamn athletic cup to protect himself from the nut shots. When resorting to weapons went out of the window, this match pretty much turned into exactly what I expected - Brock tossing Rey around like a ragdoll. I have to admit that I was in tears from laughing so hard that both Dominick and Rey got their asses kicked in the end, despite a VERY close near-fall that had me fooled for a moment there that they were putting the belt on Rey. Seriously though, how fucked up is that where your dad is out there to defend your honor and you come out there to help your dad, only to BOTH get laid out to pasture?

Rey and Dominick should've learned from Friday with Red and his dad dealing with Deebo.

As of this posting, Rey Mysterio has managed to capture the United States Championship the following night on Monday Night RAW, so I guess it wasn't all for nothing, even though he still hasn't gotten even with Brock Lesnar.

Triple Threat Match
NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler def. SmackDown! Women's Champion Bayley and RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch

On paper, this should have been easily the best thing going on this show, but sadly, it wasn't. One would think that this would have the makes to be an instant classic, but it seemed like these women didn't have any sort of synergy/in-ring chemistry at all. That was coupled with the fact that this show was dragging on at this point. No offense to the ladies, but this shouldn't have been the main event for the evening. Brock Lesnar defending the Universal Championship against Rey Mysterio would have been the more appropriate note to end on, but WWE insists on shoehorning the women in the main event slot here. I didn't have a problem with it at WrestleMania this year, but just giving Shayna Baszler her first WWE main event because they can seemed pretty lame. When it came to the build to WrestleMania, the feud between Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair was the best thing going in the company at the time. This feud between Becky, Bayley, and Shayna was treated mostly as an afterthought for majority of this battle between the brands.

Closing Thoughts

Without a shadow of a doubt, NXT confirmed what most people who regularly watched NXT on Wednesday nights knew already - NXT is the A++ show. SmackDown is the B show while RAW is down there in D and F territory.
To my pleasant surprise, WWE made the smart move - for once - and put over NXT strong as the definitive brand for WWE. They had to, really, especially if they want to convince the casuals and skeptics who weren't watching NXT regularly on the WWE Network before it started airing on USA Network to compete with AEW Dynamite on Wednesdays. NXT hasn't been winning this ratings war at the start but they are definitely closing the gap as the weeks roll by. NXT is the show to watch for sure. AEW has its own share of problems (that I'll discuss before the year's out in another article), but WWE's booking and writing for RAW and SmackDown are both shadows of their former glory. NXT is the must-see wrestling show week-in, week-out from top to bottom. If WWE doesn't recognize the wealth of talent they have on that brand now, then what are they going to do in a few years or even a few months if some of that talent are called up to RAW and/or SmackDown to lead the charge during WrestleMania season? You could call up any of the featured stars from NXT onto any the brands right now and they would instantly get over after this show. (Applauds) Well done, WWE you didn't shit the bed on making a bunch of new stars in one night.

NXT TakeOver: WarGames (Nov. 23, 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

NXT TakeOver: WarGames (2019) was a professional wrestling show and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their NXT brand. It took place on November 23, 2019, at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. It was the third event under the WarGames chronology, and the first to have a women's WarGames match, as well as the first to have two WarGames matches on the same night; it was also the second NXT TakeOver event in history in which the NXT Championship was not defended (the first being NXT TakeOver: Respect in 2015), and was the first which saw no title defenses on the card.

Kick-Off: Angel Garza def. Isaiah "Swerve" Scott

Team Rhea (Rhea Ripley and Candice LeRae) def. Team Shayna (Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, NXT UK Women's Champion Kay Lee Ray, and NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler)

Mia Yim got taken out in a backstage attack at the end of the kick-off show and was replaced by Dakota Kai on Team Rhea, but if you didn't tune into the show until the main show started you wouldn't have known that at all since the commentary team failed to mention this. When it came for Dakota to enter the match, she snapped and savagely assaulted Tegan Nox to turn heel. Bayley needs to take notes from Dakota here. This is how you own a heel turn. Even though I think most people saw it coming from the moment that she was "buttering up" Mia Yim before her ladder match a few weeks ago after she wasn't picked for Team Rhea. My only problem with it was why go after Tegan? She didn't do anything. Rhea was the one who picked her last like the nerds nobody wanted on their team in gym class.

And it was at that moment, KLR realized she fucked up.

Kay Lee Ray definitely took a beating in this match.
Io Shirai with the dive of the night.

While Rhea was unsung hero in the match while coming across as a wrecking machine, MVP award goes to Io Shirai. I'm surprised Io didn't break her legs after that Moonsault from off the top of the cage as it looked like she tried to land on her feet from the landing but her legs hit the ropes anyway in the impact. There's absolutely no way she wasn't feeling that in the morning. I'm still not too keen on Candice LeRae's bottomless amount of endurance (despite her non-disclosed history to WWE fans that she used to fight men regularly) like her husband. WWE has to be careful about how hard they push her just because she's Johnny Failure Gargano's wife as it will come across forced and there's going to be a fan backlash. NXT UK's own Women's Champion Kay Lee Ray wasn't no slouch either as she took some truly gnarly bumps in this match that she sold like pure death.

Finn Balor def. Matt Riddle

This match was originally set between Johnny Gargano and Finn Balor, but Gargano had to miss this TakeOver event due to an injury - first time that he's missed one of these events since debuting for the brand actually. Fortunately, Matt Riddle was able to fill in for Gargano as an impromptu replacement, but had to bow out as the original 4th man for Team Ciampa in WarGames. For Finn Balor's first TakeOver match back on the NXT brand, he had to win here. It's not like going back to the main roster to lose to the Fiend again was going to do him any favors, especially after his great heel turn a month ago. Riddle put up a good fight but like I said earlier, the right man went over in this contest.

Pete Dunne def. Damien Priest and Killian Dane to earn NXT Championship Match against Adam Cole the next night on Survivor Series

Even though this match was pulled out of their asses at the last possible second mere days before this event, I thought this was a fun match and we finally got a payoff for these feuds that Dunne has found himself in the middle of for the last few weeks. The best thing about this match for me was all of the various combinations these guys were doing on each other to hopefully bulldoze the competition. Pete Dunne (AKA NXT's Roger Klotz)

Team Ciampa (Keith Lee, Donovan Dijakovic, Tommaso Ciampa, and Kevin Owens) def. The Undisputed Era (NXT North American Champion Roderick Strong, NXT Tag Team Champions Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly, and NXT Champion Adam Cole)

The kicker in this match was that everyone was wondering who the mysterious 4th man was going to be to join Team Ciampa since they came to the match without even announcing who they got to their 4th man. I knew they weren't going to rehash the Women's WarGames finish where it was the babyfaces dealing with overwhelming odds as that would have been redundant at this point and I like to think that NXT has better minds in their think tank in terms of booking and mapping out storylines. In the back of my head, I had three possible outcomes for the 4th man - John Morrison, Kevin Owens, and CM Punk. As of this posting (Dec. 4, 2019), John Morrison literally just signed his new contract with WWE, so that wasn't happening at that point. CM Punk would have driven that crowd absolutely bonkers if he was the 4th, but Kevin Owens made a lot of sense, given his ROH history with all of those involved along with the fact that he would have wanted payback for what the Undisputed Era did when they invaded Monday Night RAW.

The match ended with an insane Project Ciampa off the top of the cage through two tables. If that bump wasn't insane enough (especially for Ciampa who just came back from neck surgery and Cole who has been wrestling with a fractured wrist for the last month or two), the cameras got a reaction shot of AEW's own Britt Baker (AKA Adam Cole's girlfriend) watching from the crowd, clearly mortified from what she has seen just transpire.

Yep, that's Britt Baker alright.

I don't blame WWE for doing this either as it was her own stupidity to coming to a rival promotion's PPV and sitting in the crowd. Don't show up at the show if you don't want to be shown on TV. I have to agree with Cornette on his remark about she should have been fired if she didn't clear it with AEW firsthand. Of course, AEW didn't do anything other than parody it on their own programming the following week...

My reaction to AEW and all of their callbacks and cheap knocks to WWE...
My only issue with the events of this TakeOver event was that it didn't affect anything the following night on Survivor Series, which we'll get into in the write-up on that event, but at least we got a proper follow-up on NXT Wednesday night.
