My Favorite Speedruns From AGDQ 2020

Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level gameplay by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities in its nine-year history, including Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

The tenth annual Awesome Games Done Quick for 2020 began at 12:00 PM on Sunday, January 5 and ended on Sunday, January 12.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2020
Celebrating 10 years of GDQ with a new record

Thanks to all of the amazing support from viewers, donors, runners, volunteers, sponsors, staff and more, Games Done Quick has kicked off its 10 year anniversary with a new donation record of over $3.1 million! All of the donations go directly to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, in pursuit of cancer prevention and early detection!
Speaking of records, GDQ has now broken the $25 million dollar mark for total donations raised throughout its history. Thank you again for your continued support of our events!
We also announced that AGDQ 2021 will be taking place on January 3rd - 10th, 2021. While we don't have a location to announce just yet, be sure to check out SGDQ this June (21st to the 28th) to find out!

I have an annual tradition for the last few years to donate something for their efforts since I love this marathon and seeing so many of my fellow gamers doing something special for a great cause. This past year it really hit home hard, especially following the loss of my grandmother to pancreatic cancer back in October. I'm very thankful to see something like this around to see that possibly fewer people won't have to suffer like she did in the end.

Here below, you'll find videos of several speedruns that I enjoyed from throughout the marathon. They aren't in any particular order, but these are just some of the many streams that I took enjoyment out of during that week. Hope all of you find something here that you enjoy and give the folks at GDQ a follow as well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade)

If I ever learned how to speedrun any game out there, I think I would try my hand at learning this. I was already well aware of the Kraang, Granitor, and General Traag strategies, but those are easier said than actually done to the refined precision of this runner - who you could see here that even he has trouble with the randomness of this game at times. That level two skip was pretty nuts though, same for that quick kill on Rocksteady at the end of stage one.

Mega Man 4-6 Relay Race

This run was special to me as these are two of the first Mega Man games I ever played. MM4 was the first I played when I visited one of my neighbors' houses when I was a kid, but MM6 was the first one I ever owned at the end of the NES' shelf life along with a few of the classic Gameboy ports of Mega Man titles. I wouldn't go back and play MM5 and the other classic MM titles until their re-releases via the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PlayStation or via emulation over the years. So yeah, I've been spoiled from the start since Mega Man had both the slide ability, Rush, and the Mega Buster by the time I got into the series.

As for this run itself, it's nothing short of awesome seeing these runners make a joke of these games, even though I still find MM5 to be easily forgettable, save for the twist with Proto Man/Dark Man as the 9th Robot Master. MM4 and MM6 are essentially the same plot with Dr. Wily either concealing his true identity or manipulating a pawn to do his bidding until he's forced to confront Mega Man himself.

Final Fantasy VIII

This was easily one of the longer runs of the marathon week, clocking in at roughly eight hours. It was a shame this run ended up getting overshadowed by the controversial remarks made by Luzbelheim on social media leading up to this event that resulted in his 18-month submission ban to future GDQ events. I'm not even going to even comment nor dwell on that can of worms. That being said, I enjoyed peaking at this run throughout the day - from when I was preparing for my commute to work to the duets by the runners and crew to the gameplay itself. Final Fantasy VIII is always going to be my personal favorite Final Fantasy title from the PSX era for a lot of reasons, but I'm even more happy that it got a chance to shine during a AGDQ marathon.

Even if you don't have nine hours to check out the entire stream, do yourself a favor and check out one of many musical numbers from this year's AGDQ that was a part of this run.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (All Memories and All Beads)

As of this posting, I haven't finished the game for myself, but holy fuck do I get mad seeing these quick kill strats for bosses that took me forever to beat or currently still stuck on.

Super Metroid Impossible (Romhack Playthrough, AGDQ 2020 Finale)

This speedrun served as the grand finale for AGDQ 2020 and definitely lived up to the namesake of this romhack. This game is relentlessly brutal and seems like the ultimate test for any Metroid speedrunner. I tend to watch a lot of Super Metroid speedruns - both traditional and randomizer - but this definitely took the cake in terms of the hoops a player has to jump through to complete this task. There's a LOT of deaths in this at one point, but Oatsngoats powers through until it's conclusion. An impressive effort - no doubt about that.

Super Mario Maker 2 (4v4 Blind Relay Race)

I'll never end up torturing myself playing some of these "kaizou" Super Mario levels, but seeing this relay race of teams playing the newest batch of user-created stages was a sight to behold. I didn't have any idea that they added the ability to transform into Link (from The Legend of Zelda's original NES outing but with some of his powers from later games) in a recent update, so seeing those powers on display was a welcome treat.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (2 Players 1 Controller, Blindfolded)

Out of everything that I had the pleasure of watching from AGDQ 2020 this year, this was the thing that blew me away the most and arguably the best run of the entire week - without a shadow of a doubt. The amount of chemistry and skill required to beat this game on one controller is one thing, but to do it blindfolded is another thing altogether, especially to say that they even managed to defeat Mike Tyson on their first attempt. I practically stood up and applauded after seeing this spectacle firsthand and live.

WWE Worlds Collide (Jan. 25, 2020) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Worlds Collide (2020) was a professional wrestling show and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their NXT and NXT UK brands. It took place on January 25, 2020 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and was streamed live on the WWE Network. It was the second event promoted under the Worlds Collide chronology.

Worlds Collide is a series of professional wrestling shows that began on January 26, 2019, when WWE held an interbrand tournament featuring wrestlers from their NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live brands. The "Worlds Collide" name was subsequently adopted for a WWE Network series that aired in April 2019. During their Royal Rumble weekend announcements, WWE revealed that a second Worlds Collide event would air live on the WWE Network on January 25, 2020.

Six matches were contested at the event, including one on the Kickoff pre-show. In the main event, Imperium (Walter, Fabian Aichner, Marcel Barthel, and Alexander Wolfe) defeated The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish, and Roderick Strong) in an eight-man tag team match.

Singles match
Kay Lee Ray def. Mia Yim

I had to go back and watch this match AFTER watching the rest of the show since I wasn't aware that they were airing matches on this kick-off show that weren't going to be on NXT the following week. That being said, I thought this was the better of the two women's matches on this card. Can't say that I'm a big fan of either of these women but they definitely put on one hell of a showing here. I wouldn't mind seeing them go at it again though.

On a side note, KLR is going to kill herself off how she takes some of these bumps and dives. (Laughs) Is she trying to be the UK version of Sasha Banks? She already died for our sins at Survivor Series.

Singles match
Finn Bálor def. Ilja Dragunov

I understand that Dragunov is NXT UK's pet project of sorts, but allowing main roster guys to beat the stuffing out of him isn't doing him any favors outside of showing his threshold for punishment. Sure, these matches are excellent athletic showcases, but if Dragunov is a rising star then he needs to be garnering some big wins underneath his belt. This just seems like on the job training with seasoned/much more experienced talent to educate Dragunov for higher profile matches down the road.

https://tearsofasaiyan.tumblr.com/post/190481029815

Nevertheless, this was an excellent match to kick off the show with and set the tone for the night. The right man went over with Bálor picking up the win.

Fatal 4-Way match for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship
Jordan Devlin defeated Angel Garza (c), Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, and Travis Banks

Devlin is another guy that I've heard that NXT UK is really high on as one of Bálor's former students, but I REALLY don't agree with taking the belt off Garza so soon. The guy just won it a few weeks ago and haven't had much time to do anything with his run outside of talking shit on commentary for a few weeks. On the positive side, I suppose this opens the door for more NXT UK talent to bounce back and forth on both shows to defend/challenge for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

This match was great, but there were far too many spots and instances where I literally shouted, "C'mon, that should have been the FUCKING finish!" only for guys to pop back up and do more shit for another few minutes. I know, we've been through this a million times now as that's the trend in modern wrestling, but goddamn that shit gets annoying sometimes. Every match doesn't have to go on like it's the main event at WrestleMania/Wrestle Kingdom.

Tag Team Match
DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) defeated Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven and Tyler Bate)

The first thing that went through my head watching this was that Trent Seven must have given up working out altogether like Jericho has over on AEW. This was a nice little dream match, even though I thought this went on a little too long at points. Either team could have won this match and people would have been happy. This was just fan service at this point. Nothing to complain about on my watch in regard to this match as a whole.

I can't speak for anyone else but I get nervous every time I see Ciampa take a head/neck bump and he immediately starts holding his neck, especially after the guy just came back from neck surgery. It'll pass like it did for me with Daniel Bryan coming back from retirement, but geez, there looked like there were a few close calls here.

Tegan Nox attacks Dakota Kai

Nothing to really write home about this since it was settling up their underwhelming match from this week's NXT TV episode. I don't understand why they couldn't hold that match off until the next TakeOver event in another month instead of blowing it off on free TV but that's a topic for another day.

Singles match for the NXT Women's Championship
Rhea Ripley (c) defeated Toni Storm

Out of the two showing for the women on this show, I have to say that this match was a little underwhelming. If I'm perfectly honest, I wasn't too impressed from their previous encounters on NXT UK either. This was a match with a lot of buzz behind it, but just didn't deliver to my expectations. That was added by the fact that Toni Storm failed to recapture the NXT UK Women's Championship from KLR at their Blackpool event a few weeks ago too, so both titles weren't on the line.

I love these two ladies and it hurts me to say it, but this match was easily the weakest thing on this entire card for the night.

Eight-Man Tag Team Match
Imperium (Walter, Fabian Aichner, Marcel Barthel, and Alexander Wolfe) defeated The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish, and Roderick Strong)

Alexander Wolfe was taken out of the match early after he didn't lift his chin to safely take the incoming strikes from Fish and O'Reilly, only to be legitimately knocked out and carried to the back. It worked to the benefit of this match as Imperium was down to 3 vs. 4 disadvantage, even though I could have seen Walter easily take on all four members of Undisputed Era on his own if push came to shove.

Even I felt that chop. That shit sounded like a fucking gun shot. No way in hell I'd be agreeing to take any chops from Walter nor Strong.
Jesus.

Holy shit, Strong is incredible to hit an Olympic Slam on that big Austrian bastard.
At the end of the day, this match definitely lived up to the hype and delivered to the tee. If you don't watch anything else during this show, go out of your way to watch this match for the excitement from bell to bell. My only complaint in the closing moments was that both NXT and NXT UK were tied at three wins apiece without any tie-breaker. Who knows they could do this dance again during WrestleMania weekend too and I wouldn't complain if I'm perfectly honest.

PREVIEW -- Star Wars: The Clone Wars | The Final Season - Official Trailer | Disney+

Witness the end of the groundbreaking series. The final season of StarWars: The Clone Wars starts streaming Feb. 21 on DisneyPlus.

This should appropriately end at the start of where Star Wars: Rebels begins then if they want to do some sort of an epilogue following the events of Episode III. If anything else, this should be a MUCH more darker season than those before it, given the fall of the Jedi Order and rise of the Galactic Empire coming into prominence.

PREVIEW -- MORBIUS - Teaser Trailer

#MORBIUS - watch the teaser trailer now. In theaters this summer.

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.

I'm just going to share what I said on Facebook about this so far as a couple days have passed and I'm feeling about the same about this. I hope this helps rub the stench off of Jared Leto from playing The Joker in DC/Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad and offer him a bit of redemption when it comes to playing these one of these roles in superhero films.

PREVIEW -- Stargirl | Destiny | Season Trailer | The CW

High school sophomore Courtney Whitmore discovers a powerful cosmic staff. After learning that her step-father Pat Dugan used to be a hero sidekick, she becomes the inspiration for a new generation of superheroes.

Stargirl is coming to The CW in Spring 2020!

I know that I've said that after Crisis on Infinite Earths that I was pretty much done with the CW, except for a handful of shows, namely Black Lightning (I still need to watch Season 2), Batwoman (I need to give it a shot after the pilot), and maybe Legends of Tomorrow (I'm still interesting in seeing on what they do with most of that cast despite losing interest during last season) - this show included as well.

After the JSA teaser during Crisis, I want to see how they put that team together here in Stargirl's Earth-2 reality.

If I'm honest, I'm relieved that they went with a completely different version of Stargirl from the Arrowverse to date, rather than focusing on her past two iterations on Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow.

PREVIEW -- BIRDS OF PREY (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) – Official Trailer 2

Gotham’s worst brings out their best. Meet Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain. #BirdsOfPrey in theaters 2.7.20.

I'll be completely honest here, but I'm not feeling this at all.

It feels like they are ATTEMPTING to be a live-action version of the Harley Quinn cartoon that's on DC Universe, but I just don't see it working with the characters they have lined up for this, even more so from the actresses they have playing them. Cassandra Cain was the immediate red flag right off the bat when I heard her actually speak. To say that Margot Robbie is going around tell people to catch up on the lore and comics, yet she's pumping money into this but didn't tell anyone that Cain's character is mute? I just got a feeling that they are going to fuck this up royally.

The only thing I want to see in this is Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Black Mask.

If I'm perfectly honest, I wasn't too crazy about her live-action portrayal of Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad in the first place. I can't speak for anyone else, but it's definitely a huge red flag when this is allegedly going to release next month and we're just now getting a second full length trailer. Shazam and Aquaman both got Warner Bros. into good graces with fans concerning the DCEU, but I don't see this film going over too well at all.

PREVIEW -- The New Mutants | Official Trailer | 20th Century FOX

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

In Theaters April 3, 2020

Directed by: Josh Boone

Screenplay by: Josh Boone & Knate Lee

Produced by: Simon Kinberg, p.g.a., Karen Rosenfelt, p.g.a., Lauren Shuler Donner

Cast: Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the first thing to have me excited with anticipation from 20th Century Fox's end of the spectrum when it comes to the X-Men property - at least since The Gifted was still airing on Fox. Given Fox's track record following everything X-Men related that's not X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, nor Deadpool, I shouldn't get my hopes up, but man, I can't contain my excitement for this.

Please don't fuck this up, Fox. Go out on a good note with this one.

At the end of the trailer, we get to see Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (portrayed by Anna Taylor-Joy brandishing her trademark Soulsword and donning her armor. This makes me hopeful that maybe, just maybe that this character has a chance of being added to the MCU property with the rest of the X-Men, sooner more than later. I'm still glad that they are sticking with the "horror" type theme for this, despite the reshoots following the flop that was X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

From the casting news, I heard that Alice Braga (replacing Rosario Dawson who was originally pegged for the role) will portray Dr. Cecilia Reyes in the film as well. Anyone who has conversed with me about X-Men over the years would know that Cecilia Reyes ranks within my personal top 10-20 favorite X-Men members to join the team. I'm anxious to see how Alice Braga will portray the character in this.

PREVIEW -- Street Fighter V: Champion Edition – Announcement Trailer + Gill and Seth Reveal Trailers

Rule the ring with Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, the most robust version of the acclaimed fighting game! This new version includes all content (excluding Fighting Chance costumes, brand collaboration costumes and Capcom Pro Tour DLC) from both the original release and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Champion Edition adds each character, stage and other content that released after Arcade Edition and with the release of this new version. In total: 40 characters, 34 stages, over 200 costumes – all action-packed into one knockout edition! READY? FIGHT!

All game mode additions and balance updates are free for owners of any Street Fighter V version. Additionally, all DLC characters remain earnable completely free of charge through completing various in-game challenges and receiving earned in-game currency, called Fight Money. For those who can’t wait, in-game content can be obtained instantly using real money. Certain additional content can only be acquired using Fight Money, which can be earned through normal gameplay.

Don't get me wrong. I love some of the redesigns for the mainstays of Street Fighter and most of the designs newcomers and returning fighters who skipped over Street Fighter IV, but it seems like they are beating a dead horse at this point. I thought Arcade Edition was going to be the last major system/mechanics update to the game, but here we go with another expansion, not that any of us should be surprised. It just seems to me that this game is marketed ENTIRELY towards the pros who compete in the Capcom Pro Tour on annual basis since the prize payouts are so big for this game. I rarely hear casual people talking about how much they enjoy this game PERIOD versus anything else that's out there on the market right now. Even my casual friends played the hell out of Street Fighter IV but this game was left out of the conversation for a lot of gamers following the first round of DLC content. I think Capcom shot themselves in the foot and never recovered from the fact that the game was severely lacking in single player content right out of the box until the Cinematic (Story) Mode was added late into the first year of its release. That alienated the casual crowd for the most part and that negative stigma never shook from this game when you could pick up Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, Mortal Kombat 11, Injustice 2, or anything else really that's out right now in terms of fighters with a decent story mode and a wealth of content to please single player and multiplayer enthusiasts.

I honestly can't speak for everyone else, but I mentally checked out after like the second or third season whenever Menat and Zeku were added. For the folks still genuinely invested and interested in the game, this is great news to hear that support for the game hasn't ended.

From how much Kolin appears in the Story Mode, it was only a given that Gill would make his formal appearance in this game by the time it was all said and done. For crying out loud, his brother Urien was in this since season one. It would have been strange not to add him to the roster by the time the game's shelf life ended.

I would be sad if he didn't have his infamous "RESURRECTION!!!" from Third Strike though.

Out of all of these new additions to Champion Edition, I think the inclusion of Seth is the most shocking - at least from a storyline perspective. I was under the impression that M.Bison killed Seth's body at the end of Street Fighter IV to stabilize his own Psycho Power if he wasn't able to reunite with Rose. That depends on whether or not M.Bison capturing Rose and reuniting her Soul Power with his Psycho Power from one of the endings of Street Fighter IV is canon or not. I'm sure someone can explain the lore properly to me, but I was under the impression that M.Bison has gained a considerable buff to his Psycho Power since the events of IV.

In either case, it's interesting that Seth's "body" is female this time around. She looks oddly similar to Juri too. You would think that he would have his next body looking like one of the Bison Dolls if he was a byproduct from Shadoloo's experiments before going on his own to establish S.I.N.

(Laughs) I have to wonder if Poongko is rubbing his hands like Mr. Burns after seeing this trailer now that his main is back in this game.

PREVIEW -- Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack - The Joker Official Gameplay Trailer

The Joker is the latest addition to join the Mortal Kombat 11 roster as the next fighter on first Kombat Pack as the last of Mortal Kombat 11's initial wave of DLC. He'll be joining the likes of Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, the Terminator, Sindel, and eventually, Spawn.

I thought that Joker's face looks absolutely awful in this game. I don't understand why they didn't just carry his character model over from Injustice 2 into this game. It's essentially the same graphics engine, right? Besides, Nether Realms aren't strangers to recycling animations from game to game. It's all over their resume since Mortal Kombat 9 and the original Injustice: Gods Among Us. At least his moves seem vastly different in this game in comparison to that game though so there was a lot of effort to make him a completely different entity in terms of gameplay in MK11's grand scheme of things.

I did get a good kick out of Joker's fatality being a clever nod back to "Friendships" of classic Mortal Kombat games before taking a turn for the worse, much akin to The Joker's reputation.

PREVIEW -- Axiom Verge 2 - Announcement Trailer - Nintendo Switch

You may have played Axiom Verge, or heard it referenced as a benchmark for indie “metroidvania” adventures. Axiom Verge 2 is part of the same story as Axiom Verge 1 but is a completely new game: new characters, new powers, new enemies, and a new world. You can play it before or after the original.
Meet Indra, the mysterious billionaire behind the worldwide Globe 3 conglomerate. What is this world she’s found? Who are the voices that seem to be calling to her?
Axiom Verge 2 is coming in late 2020 for Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned to learn about additional platforms!

Official Site and Info: HERE

I have raved enough about the original Axiom Verge when I first discovered the game for the PlayStation 4. I wonder how long that Nintendo will be able to keep this as a Switch exclusive or will we see a multi-platform release down the road sooner more than later. The only downside I see to this footage is that the game appears to be a prequel to the events in the first game rather than a full-blown sequel. After the revelations in the original title's ending, I felt that we deserved more to the story in terms of a sequel for those who didn't read up on all of the in-game lore.

This sequel/prequel (there's some confusion on which the teases on the official site are referring to) will release sometime in Fall 2020.

PREVIEW -- Panzer Dragoon: Remake (Nintendo Switch & Steam)

A new, remade version of the Panzer Dragoon game – true to the original, with improved graphics and controls, that suit modern gaming standards! On a far, lone planet, you encounter two dragons awaken from the ancient times. Armed with a deadly gun from the past, and the guidance of your armored blue dragon, you must fulfill your destiny and keep the Prototype Dragon from reaching the Tower or die trying.
FEATURES
  • Pilot through seven unbelievably realistic levels ranging from tropical blue ocean cities to intricate subterranean ruins.
  • Fight the Prototype Dragon who appears together with evil giant dragonflies, frightening man - sized wasps, giant sandworms, and lethal flying battleships.
  • Attack enemies approaching from all sides, quickly and without mercy, with improved 360-degree controls and a lock-on targeting.

I'm sure someone will correct me, but the only "legal" means to revisit the original Panzer Dragoon series is to buy a Sega Saturn and all of the games on the second hand market - either ebay or Amazon, ranging from $15 to up to $1500 for the games in mint condition. Panzer Dragoon Orta (vanilla Xbox) can be purchased on the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace for a reasonable price, but this is looking like a great reimagining of that beloved property. Panzer Dragoon has been gone long enough that a remake/reboot is firmly justified on current generation technology and/or consoles. I'm anxious to see what comes of this. I know the trailer is back from E3 2019, but I'm just now hearing about this news so yeah, I'm painfully aware of this news. The trailer is for the Switch, but Steam has the game listed for pre-order on PC as well. I haven't heard of MegaPixel Studio, but I hope they are able to deliver.

QUICKIE -- ThunderCats Roar - Episodes 1-2: Exodus (Parts 1-2)

ThunderCats Roar is an upcoming American animated television series produced by Warner Bros. Animation for Cartoon Network. The series is set to premiere in February 2020. ThunderCats Roar features an explicitly cartoonish artstyle with a more lighthearted, comedic tone than previous ThunderCats installments. The show's premise is similar to the original; the ThunderCats escape their dying homeworld Thundera, only to crashland on Third Earth, facing off against various villains and their evil overlord, Mumm-Ra.

On May 18, 2018, it was announced that a third ThunderCats cartoon, ThunderCats Roar, was in development and was picked up by Cartoon Network. It was originally scheduled to premiere in 2019 but was delayed to 2020. The show's developers are Victor Courtright and Marly Halpern-Graser. Courtright previously worked on the Disney XD series, Pickle and Peanut as a writer/storyboard artist and created the Cartoon Network digital series Get 'Em Tommy! Halpern-Graser previously worked as a writer for various DC Nation Shorts and was co-creator of Disney XD's show Right Now Kapow. The first two episodes were released on the Cartoon Network app on January 10, 2020.

Episode Summary: (**Spoilers!!**)

Part 1: After the destruction of their home planet Thundera, the titular ThunderCats fly off to a new home, only to crash land on Third Earth after being shot down by their arch-enemies, the Mutants. Following a scuffle with the Mutants, Lion-O pursues them into the wild while the rest of the ThunderCats meet the Berbils whose village their ship unknowingly destroyed in the crash. Luckily, the Berbils are quick builders and opt to build their base while warning them of Mumm-Ra. Lion-O ends up encountering Mumm-Ra when chased by the Mutants to the villain's pyramid, with Mumm-Ra destroying the Mutants' ship before returning to his lair.

Part 2: Lion-O enters the pyramid to thank Mumm-Ra, only to learn he is evil while revealing the presence of the other Thundercats on Third Earth. Mumm-Ra, explaining his Doomstaff grants him power while establishing a curse where anyone who says his name is struck by lightning, chains Lion-O up and uses a portal to attack the ThunderCats' new home. Mumm-Ra makes short work of the team despite their resistance, with Lion-O and Snarf arriving too late. Things seemed hopeless until Mumm-Ra unintentionally praised the Berbils as they hug him with his own curse used against him, enabling the ThunderCats to break free with Lion-O destroying Mumm-Ra's staff. Mumm-Ra, reverted to his natural form, escapes and Lion-O promises to stay with his team and lead them to victory.

The Verdict:

After seeing the behind the scenes trailer above, I knew what I was getting into when I first saw this, even though I was cringing when I saw the initial images for this. I TRIED to keep an open mind throughout this, knowing that I'm not the audience that they are going with for this new iteration of ThunderCats, but boy, I cannot shake the comparisons to Teen Titans Go!. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't trying to bastardize what was a great series for Cartoon Network with it's previous iteration with the 2011 series, only to replace it with THIS of all things. Don't get me wrong. There were a few moments that did get a natural laugh out of me from references to the original series, but damn, it hurts seeing ThunderCats dragged through the mud like this into weak comedy efforts.

I don't understand what is with Hollywood bastardizing everything that I grew with as of late, including but limited to ThunderCats, Voltron (let's just all admit that tail end of the Netflix reboot wasn't worth it), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (seriously WTF on Rise of the TMNT at times), and even Transformers (remember they went through their own "comedy" run with Transformers: Animated on this very same network), with poorly drawn "reboots" to cater to kids in a comedic manner with little to no action. That being said, I'm not outraged like the bulk of the Internet at this. At this point, I have just grown ultimately disappointed seeing so many great franchises being reduced to this route. Hollywood isn't catering to my generation anymore as they don't see a profit in it. That's painfully obvious from the trend that these shows keep popping up despite the fan backlash from each and every time a new one pops up.

That being said, there's some interesting differences in this iteration of the ThunderCats lore in comparison to the original series though. Lion-O isn't a boy in a man's body as a result of being aged up from the stasis pods that he was confined within following the Cats' escape from Thundera - something the 2011 series didn't recycle either. Jaga (voiced by the original Lion-O voice actor Larry Kenny himself) is already dead and merely acts as the narrator for the first two episodes. Mumm-Ra doesn't seem to have his original weakness of being unable to face his own reflection, even though that was fucking hilarious in the original series until it was written out in later seasons. Snarf isn't a nanny/babysitter to Lion-O (like in the original series) nor just common housepet (2011 iteration). Instead, he's a fucking robot that offers tools to assist Lion-O out in the field. I guess that's going to be the plot device or deus ex machina as much as the Sword of Omens was in the original series that solved any and ALL problems to the point of absurdity in the original series. When they got to the point where that thing was holding planets together I was like get the fuck out of here, even as a kid. The Berbils were well represented here, even though I have to admit that I'm anxious to see how they adapt some of the other inhabitants of Third Earth into this series in terms of their designs.

What the actual fuck is my immediate reaction to seeing the animation of this show at times...
Speaking of designs, I have to comment on how this show looks visually. It looks like the folks behind Kablam! (remember that Nicktoons fans?) and the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack came together to make this from how everything looks down to the expressive manner of the characters at times. I hate to mention those two shows negatively as I loved them for they were but their distinct art styles aren't something I would have thought to see in something like this. Cartoon Network used to pride itself with some of the best animation on the planet back in the '90s and early 2000s, only for the present day landscape of the network's line-up to look like stuff that anyone could make who takes a pen to paper without much thought put into it. Sure, these characters are recognizable to long-time fans, but at the end of the day, it's just another bastardization of yet another beloved childhood property from the popular 80's media.

Watch It or Don't Bother?

If Cartoon Network thinks that just tossing out a subpar ThunderCats show to give them an petty excuse to hang onto the ThunderCats license, then that's only going to toss more oil onto the fire with fans demanding a revival/continuation of the 2011 series and/or more nostalgia to the original series. This show does nothing to quell the fans of either of those iterations of ThunderCats. Instead, it spits in the faces of the fans and memories of those shows alike.

This one is easy. Spare yourself the torment and avoid this like the plague. It doesn't "officially" debut until February, but the first two pilot episodes are up on the Cartoon Network app for viewing for those with morbid curiosity like me. I honestly would be surprised if this ends up being another hit for the network like Teen Titans Go!. I feel genuinely sorry for Victor Courtright though. In the behind the scenes video that I shared earlier in this article, he seemed like a genuine fan of the original series and wanted to offer his own lighthearted spin on it. I'm sure his intentions were pure and he didn't sought out to tarnish the ThunderCats' legacy, but this show isn't the right course of action following the 2011's series' abrupt cancellation. Sadly, fans aren't going to give him a break in that regard either once this show officially debuts in February and there's mass exposure to it outside of the Cartoon Network app.

New Japan Pro Wrestling: Wrestle Kingdom 14 - Night 1 & 2 (Jan. 4-5, 2020) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Wrestle Kingdom 14 in Tokyo Dome was a two-night professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The event took place on January 4 and January 5, 2020 at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. It was the 29th January 4 Tokyo Dome Show and the 14th promoted under the Wrestle Kingdom name; it was also the first time the event was held over two days, instead of taking place solely on January 4.

The main event of night 1 saw Kazuchika Okada defeat Kota Ibushi to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. In other prominent matches during night 1, Tetsuya Naito defeated Jay White to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, the returning Hiromu Takahashi defeated Will Ospreay to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, Jon Moxley defeated Lance Archer in a Texas Deathmatch to regain the IWGP United States Championship and FinJuice (David Finlay and Juice Robinson) defeated Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship.

In night 2's main event, Naito defeated Okada in a Double Gold Dash match to become the first ever dual holder of the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships. In other notable matches in the undercard of the night 2, Jay White defeated Kota Ibushi, Chris Jericho defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto won the NEVER Openweight Championship from Kenta, Jon Moxley successfully defended the IWGP United States Championship against Juice Robinson, Zack Sabre Jr. retained the British Heavyweight Championship against Sanada and Roppongi 3K (Sho and Yoh) defeated Bullet Club (El Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori) to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. The event also saw the retirement match of Japanese wrestling legend Jushin Thunder Liger.
Just to clarify, I'm not going to comment on EVERY match on this card. Just the ones that really stood out to me since I honestly don't follow New Japan's product as closely as I should. Wrestle Kingdom always marks my annual tradition of renewing my subscription to NJPW World and promising myself that I'm going to give their product a chance to follow in the new year, only to cancel shortly thereafter since I don't have the time to watch their shows live like this. In all honesty, I get see a wealth of spoilers and gifs on my social media timelines by the time I get to my desk and login at work in the mornings when those shows do take place.

(Dark Match) Stardom Special Tag Team Match
Mayu Iwatani and Arisa Hoshiki defeated Hana Kimura and Giulia (with Jungle Kyona and Konami)

Even though this match wasn't televised on the live feed, it was a rather big deal going into this event. NJPW's parent company, Bushiroad, is investing into Stardom going forward and wants to elevate the company starting with this slot on this year's Wrestle Kingdom card.

There's a rather bit of a pickle on why the match couldn't be broadcast as part of the card, but this article details why New Japan couldn't air the match. I wouldn't mind getting a chance to check it out at some point if someone recorded it or it pops up on Stardom's YouTube channel or something.

Eight-man tag team match
Toa Henare, Karl Fredericks, Clark Connors, and Alex Coughlin defeated Great Bash Heel (Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma), Yota Tsuji, and Yuya Uemura

Tag team match
Tencozy (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima) defeated Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi

Eight-man tag team match with Norio Honaga was the special guest referee
Naoki Sano, Shinjiro Otani, Tatsuhito Takaiwa, and Ryusuke Taguchi (with Kuniaki Kobayashi) defeated Jushin Thunder Liger, Tatsumi Fujinami, The Great Sasuke, and Tiger Mask (with El Samurai)

#ThankYouLiger
This is was like a who's who of greatest friends and rivals for Jushin Thunder Liger. I was honestly surprised a lot of these guys were still alive, no less still able to go have a match. Regardless, this wasn't much to write home about, even more disappointing that Liger was pinned here in a lackluster manner. I thought he would at least get one win on his way out but damn.

Eight-man tag team match
Suzuki-gun (Zack Sabre Jr., Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, and El Desperado) defeated Los Ingobernables de Japon (Sanada, Evil, Shingo Takagi, and Bushi) by submission

Just wow.

Eight-man tag team match
Chaos (Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, and Yoshi-Hashi) defeated Bullet Club (Kenta, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, and Chase Owens) (with Pieter)

I honestly was getting sick of these 6 and 8-Man tag team matches to the point where I was drifting to sleep watching live (despite having a pretty lengthy nap prior) but boy did seeing Pieter's fineness wake me up for sure. There were some pretty good spots in this match, mostly involving the heavy-hitters, Fale and Ishii, to no surprise.

Tag team match for the IWGP Tag Team Championship
FinJuice (Juice Robinson and David Finlay) defeated Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) (c) (with Jado)

I live for the Guerillas of Destiny's Wrestle Kingdom ring entrances, but I was ultimately letdown this year. They came out without anything other than their normal ring gear on, doing their best imitation of their "cousins" (the Usos), looking like they just came straight from the nearby club to do this match. At least their entrance music is still as bad ass as I remember. This match wasn't bad at all with a lot of near-falls that had me fooled that GoD were going to retain, but nope, FinJuice won the gold by the time it was all said and done.

Texas Deathmatch for the IWGP United States Championship
No DQ; No pinfall; Victory by 10 count KO or submission
Jon Moxley defeated Lance Archer (c) by knockout

I felt like I was having deja vu watching this match. This felt like the same few "deathmatches" that Moxley has had since leaving WWE for AEW and everywhere else. That being said, this wasn't a bad match, just a lot of instances where I felt that I've seen this before but with different dance partners.

Those Japanese tables look like they don't have any give at all.

Archer got a nasty wound on his arm after going through those unforgiving Japanese wooden tables for the finish that saw Moxley pick up the win via knockout since he was unable to return to the ring before the 20 count.

Singles match for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship
Hiromu Takahashi defeated Will Ospreay (c)

Out of everything in Night One, I'm sure everyone's going to be talking about this match as an early Match of the Year candidate. It wasn't perfect though as Ospreay and Takahashi had a few botches that they were quick to disguise/mask and recover from to keep people engaged. There was a sequence towards the end of this match that you have to see to believe that was just pure insanity in terms of athleticism.

It sucks to hear that Ospreay got injured at some point during this match as him and Takahashi (who just came back from a pretty gnarly neck injury) killed it here. Takahashi has to be nuts to take so many neck bumps to say that he literally JUST came back from injury though.

Just go out of your way to check out this match. You won't be disappointed.

Singles match for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship
Tetsuya Naito defeated Jay White (c) (with Gedo)

Here's the thing. I never thought Jay White was the guy, even more so when NJPW shoehorned him into top gaijin spot following Kenny Omega's departure last year. I just don't see what is the fascination with "Discount Seth Rollins" here. White and Gedo did everything they could to heel it up and garner some heat into this match with Naito while playing up to the narrative of his ailing knees, but I just wasn't feeling this match at all. Out of the three main events that closed out Night One, I felt this was easily the weakest of the three, despite the fact the right man went over.

Singles match for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship
Kazuchika Okada (c) defeated Kota Ibushi

Whereas Naito vs. White was the weakest of these three main events that closed out Night One, this was arguably the best match - by a small margin in comparison to Takahashi vs. Ospreay. I found myself caught up into the narrative of this match - much like a LOT of people by the reactions online. I was getting anxious the longer this dragged out that Ibushi kept Okada against the ropes and couldn't put him away. Ultimately, Okada got his second, third, and fourth winds and picked up the win over Ibushi in a convincing manner.

Kota Ibushi just popped up like it was nothing.

They definitely had me fooled this was over there.

But Jesus Christ listen to those strikes.

https://russelldearest.tumblr.com/post/190130516441/was-going-to-gif-it-but-you-have-to-hear-it

As much as I wanted Ibushi to win gold here, I understand why they went with Okada going over. It wouldn't have meant shit if Naito beat Ibushi in Night Two to end his narrative that started when Okada beat him about two years ago, so Okada had to win here to face Naito in Night Two to properly conclude the story that New Japan started. It wouldn't surprise me in the least that we see Ibushi holding gold before the year's out or beating Naito this time around next year. It seems like Ibushi has inner demons to exorcise out of himself before he's properly slotted into that position.

Closing Thoughts on Night One:

Ospreay and Takahashi had the definitive match of the evening up to the point, Okada versus Kota Ibushi started. They went out there and had one hell of a match too. If you don't watch anything else from Night 1 go do yourself a favor and watch both of those matches. Hell, I'll go as far as saying that those matches were better than anything on Night 2 too. Far too many tag team matches in the first half of this for my taste. Like I mentioned earlier, the only thing that woke me up was seeing Pieter's fineness on my NJPW World feed coming out with the rest of the Bullet Club.

Gauntlet match for the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship
Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil, Shingo Takagi, and Bushi) defeated The Most Violent Players (Togi Makabe and Toru Yano) and Ryusuke Taguchi (c), Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii, Yoshi-Hashi, and Robbie Eagles), Suzuki-gun (Taichi, El Desperado, and Yoshinobu Kanemaru) and Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, and Chase Owens)

Tag team match
Hiromu Takahashi and Ryu Lee defeated Jushin Thunder Liger and Naoki Sano (with Yoshiaki Fujiwara)
This was Jushin Thunder Liger's retirement match

If you were watching this live on Sunday morning/Saturday evening over on NJPW World, the app crashed after this match - appropriately so, if you ask me. That was a pretty anti-climatic finale for Liger's retirement. I'm fine with Liger doing the honors on his way out, but two "meh" worthy losses to end his career on wasn't how I saw his career ending, especially from how much marketing went into this grand finale of sorts. By the time you have read this, he would have had his formal retirement ceremony during the New Year's Dash event.

Tag team match for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship
Roppongi 3K (Yoh and Sho) (with Rocky Romero) defeated Bullet Club (Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo) (c)

The highlight of this match for me was these guys pulling out the athletic cups to protect themselves from the Low Blows from the Bullet Club. Someone should've enlightened AJ Styles, Nakamura, and Brock Lesnar about that technical marvel a few years ago.

Singles match for the British Heavyweight Championship
Zack Sabre Jr. (c) defeated Sanada

It goes without saying that I love the technical mastery of ZSJ. That's like my annual treat from these Wrestle Kingdom events for the last few years that I started watching them. I thought Sanada was a solid talent back during his time in Impact/TNA Wrestling and I'm glad to see him in a high profile match on this card. Close but no cigar homie. I love seeing ZSJ tie guys up like a pretzel.

Singles match for the IWGP United States Championship
Jon Moxley (c) defeated Juice Robinson (with David Finlay)

I was in the mindset of a lot of people thinking that Moxley was dropping the title back to Juice Robinson here on Night 2, but boy was I wrong. This wasn't a bad match, but I liked Moxley's match from Night 1 more than this one. That's not a knock on either talent here; it's just that I wasn't feeling this as much as the one on the previous night.

Business definitely picked up with Minoru Suzuki coming out following the win and challenging for the belt next though. I think people have been clamoring for that match since Moxley debuted for New Japan last year.

Sums up everyone's feelings after Suzuki came out there to lay out Mox.

Singles match for the NEVER Openweight Championship
Hirooki Goto defeated KENTA (c)

This was a master versus student sort of narrative, since New Japan couldn't get Katsuyori Shibata cleared for a match no matter how badly fans wanted to see him against KENTA, especially after they teased the fuck out of it last year. Way to play with our emotions there, New Japan... Goto versus KENTA wasn't bad for a consolation prize. Can't say I knew what GTR was before this match but now that I've seen Goto pull it off, I think the move was pretty darn awesome.

Singles match
Jay White (with Gedo) defeated Kota Ibushi

This didn't bore me to death like the one with Naito in Night 1 did, but I can't say that I'm any much more of a fan of Jay White or who I jokingly call "Discount Seth Rollins".

Much like Night 1, I'm more intrigued with the Kota Ibushi's "dark side" that White was dead set on unleashing to Ibushi's own detriment in this match. It seems like New Japan is trying to tell the tale as if this is Ibushi's own version of Ryu (from Street Fighter) dealing with his own struggles with the Satsui no Hadou within him. I don't follow New Japan's storylines full-time, but I was under the impression that they have Ibushi on this path where he can't harness this destructive power positively at first, but once he does, that will be the moment where he finally captures the World Championship.

Singles match
Had Tanahashi won, he would've received a match for Jericho's AEW World Championship
Chris Jericho defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi by submission

The tale of the tape going into this match had Jericho egging people on that Tanahashi would get a AEW World title match if he somehow beat Jericho. While that made people doubt that Jericho was going over here, I thought it would have been stupid if AEW allowed their World Champion to go to another promotion and fucking lose on their equivalent of WrestleMania. I enjoyed this for the most part, but the fact that Jericho has let himself go in terms of physique cannot be ignored at this point. He's got flab oozing over his weight belt and his body is showing little to no definition. I thought as a veteran he would going over and beyond to set the example to AEW's younger talent on how to carry himself as the flagbearer of that company but no dice. I've listened to other podcasters point out Jericho's physique and laughed it off since AEW's debut as a joke but it's REALLY noticeable in this match to the point that it's distracting.

Double Gold Dash match for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Intercontinental Championship
Tetsuya Naito (IWGP Intercontinental Champion) defeated Kazuchika Okada (IWGP Heavyweight Champion)

As good as this match was, I can't say that this match was as good as Okada vs. Ibushi to close off Night One. I would like to blame that shortcoming on the fact that both men probably were spent after their matches from the night prior from being banged up and having to come out to do this dance again 24 hours later. I thought all of the Destino and Rainmaker reversals were getting redundant at one point as everyone just kept kicking out of each other's finishers to same result over and over and over. I think they could accomplished the same thing in this match given half the run time of this match. In the end, the right man won with Naito going over Okada.

Naito wasn't allowed to enjoy his victory for long as KENTA ran down and attacked him post-match. I understand why NJPW did this, but I can't say that I liked it. They could have allowed Naito to enjoy that win at least for the finale to Night Two and set up the first challenge from Bullet Club's KENTA at New Year's Dash the following night. Instead, they went with the narrative that the Bullet Club wanted to close Wrestle Kingdom by stealing the spotlight away from Naito and his faction coming out of the event strong following Bullet Club's string of loses in both nights. That decision sets up an easy first challenger for both of Naito's newfound wealth of gold and it wouldn't damage KENTA in the long run with a loss there, given the massive amount of heat he has garnered for himself in a such a short time.

Closing Thoughts on Night Two

Like I just mentioned above, I wasn't too crazy about the main event of this event but I was satisfied with the right man coming out on top to conclude Naito's narrative from the last two years. Everything thing else here paled in comparison to high points in Night One, even though I enjoyed a lot of the matches on this card. I just felt that nothing was as strong as those Ibushi/Okada and Ospreay/Takahashi matches that blew me away in Night One. I do want to add that the English commentary team was great for both nights - a small thing that a lot of us take for granted watching most of the other various wrestling alternatives out there. That being said, I can't say that I would like to see them continue doing the two-night format going forward as I honestly don't see what the benefit was here. It seemed like even the Japanese crowds were burnt out by the time the end of Night Two rolled around. It was a nice experiment that ensured that I wouldn't have to pull an all-nighter with work the following day like usual this year, but yeah, I rather them go back to the one night format for 2021.
