NXT TakeOver 31 (Oct. 4, 2020) -- Results & Afterthoughts

NXT TakeOver 31 was a professional wrestling pay-per-view and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their NXT brand division. It took place on October 4, 2020 at the remodeled WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, which housed the new “Capitol Wrestling Center”, NXT’s version of the “ThunderDome” used for Raw and SmackDown at the Amway Center - also in Orlando. As the name implies, it was the 31st NXT TakeOver event.

Five matches were contested at the event. In the main event, Finn Bálor defeated Kyle O'Reilly to retain the NXT Championship. On the undercard, Io Shirai defeated Candice LeRae to retain the NXT Women's Championship and Damian Priest defeated Johnny Gargano to retain the NXT North American Championship.

Singles match for the NXT North American Championship
Damian Priest (c) def. Johnny Gargano

I can't speak for anyone else but you will never hear me complain when Johnny Failure shows up to play at these NXT TakeOver specials. Whether he's heel or face, Gargano can bump his ass off, but still can't get the job done. I would love to know what is his win/lose ratio at these NXT TakeOver specials though.

As for this match as a whole, it was a solid opener, but my biggest knock against this match and this show as a whole is that this is NOT the match I would have started the night off with. I think Kushida and Velveteen Dream should have gone on first being that it's the only non-title match on this entire card. Don't get me wrong either as I don't think this was a bad match, just not one that I would have opened this show off with. This was a solid bout with some great spots, but Priest definitely dodged a bullet on that dive over the ropes and into the trainees/extras standing at ringside to catch him. If Priest was any further off on that landing he would've hit dead on the corner of that barricade or one of his limbs would have done the same as well - either way that would have been ugly. Someone needs to tell Priest that this isn't Ring of Honor anymore and he doesn't need to be diving out of the ring to make an impact. That's a bit much, especially when you're one of the bigger guys. That shit is going to catch up with you sooner more than later.

The narrative here was that Gargano pulled every dirty trick in his playbook, only for the "Gargano Way" to be all for nothing as he still walked away with this match with another token loss in the L column of Johnny Failure's laundry list of defeats. This isn't a bad thing either as at this point of his NXT tenure, he should be putting over guys instead of beating people, despite the fact that I was scared going into this show that NXT would do something stupid like the main roster would and have Priest drop the title to Gargano just to give him heel heat and bragging rights for him and Candice (after beating Io later).

Singles match
Kushida def. Velveteen Dream by submission

It cannot be said enough about how much I adored that promotional package with Kushida talking about why he's here in NXT and his ongoing struggles to fit in on NXT and American soil, only to express that he's doing this not only for himself but for his family - namely his adorable baby girl. I cringe at the thought of what Vince would do to him on the main roster, but this was excellent for him here. This was the match that should have started off this show, especially after Kushida attacked Dream during his entrance.

THIS was the Kushida I wanted to see since Day 1 after I heard he was signing with NXT. We've seen glimpses of it here and there but man, I'm glad to see Kushida kick it up a notch like during his New Japan days. I'm sorry, but Dream didn't have jack shit against this dude here. It felt absolutely one-sided at one point to me. The narrative for this match was simple - Kushida was fed up with Dream's bullshit and he was going to pay for it. Simple as that. Kushida systematically wore down and tore down Dream's arm until he forced to submit from the Hoverboard Lock. Kushida didn't stop there as he continued to attack the limb following Dream's submission while the referees rushed in to break it up. This "hardened" edge to Kushida was a much needed and welcome change for me.

Triple H's comment about Dream's "immaturity" out of the ring was telling too as it seems like he's in the doghouse of sorts for those continued allegations against him, despite Triple H and WWE's claims of running their own investigation(s) on him and Austin Theory. I don't care how talented those guys are in-ring, but if the truth comes out and they are guilty as all sin, then NXT and Triple H need to be held accountable for glamorizing these individuals on their programming. That goes double for Matt Riddle too.

Singles match for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship
Santos Escobar (c) (with Joaquin Wilde and Raul Mendoza) def. Isaiah "Swerve" Scott

Even though I know that these two were Killshot and King Cuerno in Lucha Underground, I honestly cannot get into this feud. I thought NXT signing El Hijo del Fantasma was a great pick-up for the NXT brand, much like the signing of Shane Strictland, but this whole thing over the Cruiserweight Championship isn't doing not a damn thing for me. It's sad too because these guys are putting on some solid performances since their initial outing back in the Interim Cruiserweight title tournament, but it feels like that these two have been feuding forever with no ending in sight. The same can be said about Escobar's cohorts in Wilde and Mendoza feuding with the current NXT Tag Team Champions in Breezango, but to be fair, they've ran that program and the one with Imperium into the ground. I like the group - Legado del Fantasma - collectively, but man, NXT have been running these programs against guys who cannot get a break against them for shit for feels like months now. Move onto something else, please. I was hoping that maybe we could have gotten Undisputed Era against Legado del Fantasma for War Games in some capacity, but I doubt that is going to happen with Swerve getting a new ally in the form of Ashantee "Thee" Adonis. I watched this match twice and I didn't have an idea who the flying fuck that dude was until later in this show where they interviewed him backstage. Apparently, he was in Ring of Honor and a few other places before signing with WWE and competing primarily on 205 Live. (Laughs) No wonder I don't know who he is then...

Once again, this wasn't a bad match, even though there were some sloppy missteps upon execution. It didn't bore me to death, so that's a positive. I'm just sick of seeing these guys face off, especially when it seems like Swerve faces this dude to a losing effort at every opportunity for the Cruiserweight title. He's turning into the Apollo Crews of the Cruiserweight division, whereas if he keeps getting shot after shot against Escobar, eventually he's going to get lucky and get the title off of the guy.

Singles match for the NXT Women's Championship
Io Shirai (c) def. Candice LeRae

(Laughing) When Johnny Failure shows up to TakeOver, his wife Jenny Failure isn't far behind. I'm sorry, but after this match, I'm done with this current crop of opponents down in NXT's Women's Division for Io Shirai. It's painfully obvious that no one other than Rhea Ripley is a stand out in that division, especially when they aren't going to have Dakota Kai nor Raquel Gonzales beat her for it and Tegan Nox just got sidelined with an injury while anyone else in that division has seen much screen time on weekly TV episodes or if any at all (Ahem... Santana Garrett, who I have absolutely NO idea why they aren't pushing that woman to the moon...). Much like the opener between Gargano and Priest for the North American Championship, I had doubts going into this show that NXT would do some stupid main roster booking and have Candice and Gargano sweep the champions just to say that they are the first and only couple to hold NXT gold at the same time. It was the same thing on the main roster where they couldn't resist to put all of the belts on Sasha Banks and Bayley earlier this year. In my opinion, putting all of your championships on one person does nothing but highlight the fact of how much your division(s) are lacking in credible challengers and the lack of depth in that said division. If we're being honest with ourselves, WWE has a major problem with that across all three brands, including NXT as well.

It was a saving grace that they ended this match with not one but TWO new challengers making themselves known to the reigning champion - first with the returning Toni Storm (who I'm guessing is able to leave the United Kingdom now that the travel restrictions have eased up a bit) and second with the returning Ember Moon (revealing herself as the mystery former champion in the vignettes from the last few weeks) from the injury that nearly ended her career.

I tweeted it during the show and I'll say it here too. If I could be selfish, I wish it would have been Ember Moon returning on the main roster to challenge Asuka for the RAW Women's Championship to revisit their old NXT rivalry that never got to be resolved properly, due to Asuka forfeiting the title and leaving the NXT brand following an injury of her own. Monday Night RAW is severely in need of new, strong opponents for Asuka and Ember Moon would be one hell of an opponent for Asuka if they were to play up their history from NXT. Alas, that think tank of chimps writing on the main roster probably didn't think of that, so Triple H got first dibs at Ember Moon making her return to the company on NXT instead. Io Shirai versus Ember Moon would easily be a dream match-up for many, as I'm not sure if they have faced each other in any capacity in the past outside of WWE. Io and Toni Storm on the other hand, have had a lot of encounters outside of WWE, namely for Stardom. That would be a pleasant treat to revisit some of those bouts for future TakeOver specials. Toni and Ember will definitely spice this women's division on NXT for the better, that's for sure. I wouldn't mind seeing Rhea Ripley face those two (again in some cases) as well. They definitely have to rehab her following her lost momentum following the lost to Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania this year. Rhea's momentum fell off a cliff at that point and never came back. That has to be NXT's biggest blunder all year, especially when you look at how her star was on the rise this time a year ago.

As for this match from bell to bell, it was alright, but I can't say that it was one of my favorite TakeOver outings for Io Shirai. Candice LeRae put up a better performance than I was expecting, but I don't have to see her competing for the NXT Women's Championship anytime soon. It was a bit much to even entertain that thought at this point. I honestly don't know what they should do with Candice really. She was set to be in a program with Tegan Nox until it was confirmed that her torn ACL injury was legitimate over the past week. Tegan Nox can't catch a break with these leg injuries at all. I hate that she has to miss time in the ring and nurse yet another leg injury, I think Tegan might have to consider hanging it up if she keeps getting put down like this. As for Candice LeRae, this heel gimmick with Candice's husband is generally hit or miss, with not just me, but most people watching NXT every week and I didn't think she was a very good babyface either. She's just really bland to me, but she's good worker in the ring though. I guess they could migrate her into a program with Shotzi Blackheart, but it seems like her and Rhea Ripley are still feuding with Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzales off and on, so who knows.

I loved the Spanish Fly that Io busted out towards the end here, but I have no idea why Tom Phillips made a point to keep saying that Io is a fan of Rey Mysterio afterwards when he doesn't have a reputation of using that move in his own arsenal. That was a minor gripe here that was quickly forgotten after Gargano's attempts to play the role of the referee backfired and ensured that the "Gargano Way" wasn't the way to victory here.

Singles match for the NXT Championship
Finn Bálor (c) def. Kyle O'Reilly

This match made me really happy as a long-time Kyle O'Reilly fan, namely for the fact that more people have this chance to see exactly how good he is in the ring.

Both Balor and O'Reilly suffered some legit injuries from this hard hitting affair. O'Reilly fractured Balor's jaw in two places after being on the receiving end of one of his brutal high knees while O'Reilly lost some teeth by the end of this match. Both of these guys brought it like they were wrestling in the main event in the Tokyo Dome. This is definitely a TakeOver match that shouldn't be missed. As an O'Reilly fan, I'm really happy to see him in this spot. It would have been even better if he won the match, but at the same time, I get why they didn't pull the trigger on that victory quite yet. It's up in the air on whether or not that they want to pull the trigger on splitting up the Undisputed Era too. I wouldn't do that as should be called up to the main roster collectively as an unit. Otherwise, Vince McMahon will just look at each individual member of that group as more "too small" guys to fill up 205 Live's roster. O'Reilly and Bobby Fish (together as reDRagon) are desperately needed to reinvigorate that dying tag team scene on the main roster, but I fear for Fish's long-term ability to avoid injuries when he has been plagued with them for the last few years. Strong will fit in easily as a "good hand" for the mid-card scene at the Intercontinental/United States title level, but I can't see him going beyond that level in WWE's environment. Adam Cole is the total package out of all four members of Undisputed Era, but his size will be the only thing that would have him looked over (by Vince mostly) in favor of bigger, imposing figures in WWE.

Maybe it's just me, but to me, it looked like Finn Balor completely no sold O'Reilly working his limbs over the entire match just to merely hit the Coup de Grace twice - both standing and diving without showing any signs of the abuse making a difference in the finish. I doubt that was intentional, especially for a seasoned professional like Balor, but damn that didn't sit right with me watching this finish live Sunday night.

The post-match with Richard Holland tossing a battered and bruised Adam Cole like a piece of meat at the feet of the members of Undisputed Era at ringside felt a little flat to me. Holland is a monstrosity to behold, but at the same time, I hope they don't fast track this dude to the top at the same manner that they did with Karrion Kross earlier this year or even Brock Lesnar back in 2002. Hell, Holland looks JUST like a young Brock Lesnar and I'm sure that Vince McMahon would lose his mind if he saw that guy right now. I wouldn't even hold that match where Johnny Gargano suffered that scary stinger by being dropped onto his head by Holland against him either. Both of them were to blame in that freak incident where Gargano jumped a little too late and at the same time, Holland didn't spin around with the Powerslam in time before landing on the mat. Accidents happen, but I do think it wouldn't hurt to slow his ascent though. It's not going to kill them to take their time with that guy. They took months with Lars Sullivan when they were building him up as a credible monster. I think most people were expecting the Undisputed Era to fall out following the decision of this match, but I think the long game is to pull the swerve that Cole staged the entire incident and has Holland as his hired muscle.

As of this posting (10/8/20), Ridge Holland suffered a pretty gnarly knee injury during a match with Danny Burch on WWE NXT last night (10/7/20). I don't know what the full scope of that injury is, but man, that has to suck for Holland as it was abundantly clear that NXT had big plans for that guy. People who saw the match live on social media said that you could literally see his knee explode during the spot in question. It looks like a pretty bad as you just know that your knee and/or ankle isn't supposed to bend that way. I'm hoping for a speedy recovery for the guy.

Afterthoughts:

The change in scenery for the Performance Center was needed desperately months ago when this pandemic first started. I thought when WWE started running shows in there full-time that they would spice the venue up a bit, but NXT keep getting more and more boring to watch visually as the weeks played out. Changing the venue to look like a modified version of the Thunderdome set that WWE has been using for RAW and SmackDown! for the past few months was a nice touch, along with the fans and trainees behind the fences/Plexi glass. I hope someone gets a good screenshot online of the side of the venue across from the hard camera where you can clearly see Shotzi Blackheart and several others in attendance not wearing any masks, but Triple H assured everyone on his post-show conference call that all safety and health guidelines were being followed. Yeah, right...

I did think it was in good taste that they formally renamed the WWE Performance Center to the “Capitol Wrestling Center”, as an homage to the Capitol Wrestling Corporation, the predecessor to WWE that was founded by Jess McMahon in 1953. They even adopted the old logo to boot. This new look will definitely made the boring, bland Performance Center stand out more akin to the shady fight club feel that it should have, similar to a blend between Lucha Underground and Ring of Honor's visual presentation. I mention the latter mainly because that is what a lot of NXT storylines and matches are heavily influenced by. My only concern is how long is this layout going to stay fresh until viewers are bored with this visual presentation too? Even AEW are struggling in that regard week-to-week when they were leading the charge on how to present wrestling during this pandemic at first, so only time will tell in the long run.

This wasn't a bad show at all, but I think it was a far cry from being one of the best TakeOver specials of the year. It's just hard to top the stand out performances from TakeOver XXX a few months prior to this, but the talent here put in their best efforts to try though. There's no doubt about that. The best thing for me was that this show didn't overstay it's welcome either as it was over well before 10PM Eastern Standard Time and didn't try to clock in towards midnight like AEW or the main roster PPVs.

WWE Worlds Collide (Jan. 25, 2020) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Worlds Collide (2020) was a professional wrestling show and WWE Network event produced by WWE for their NXT and NXT UK brands. It took place on January 25, 2020 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and was streamed live on the WWE Network. It was the second event promoted under the Worlds Collide chronology.

Worlds Collide is a series of professional wrestling shows that began on January 26, 2019, when WWE held an interbrand tournament featuring wrestlers from their NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live brands. The "Worlds Collide" name was subsequently adopted for a WWE Network series that aired in April 2019. During their Royal Rumble weekend announcements, WWE revealed that a second Worlds Collide event would air live on the WWE Network on January 25, 2020.

Six matches were contested at the event, including one on the Kickoff pre-show. In the main event, Imperium (Walter, Fabian Aichner, Marcel Barthel, and Alexander Wolfe) defeated The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish, and Roderick Strong) in an eight-man tag team match.

Singles match
Kay Lee Ray def. Mia Yim

I had to go back and watch this match AFTER watching the rest of the show since I wasn't aware that they were airing matches on this kick-off show that weren't going to be on NXT the following week. That being said, I thought this was the better of the two women's matches on this card. Can't say that I'm a big fan of either of these women but they definitely put on one hell of a showing here. I wouldn't mind seeing them go at it again though.

On a side note, KLR is going to kill herself off how she takes some of these bumps and dives. (Laughs) Is she trying to be the UK version of Sasha Banks? She already died for our sins at Survivor Series.

Singles match
Finn Bálor def. Ilja Dragunov

I understand that Dragunov is NXT UK's pet project of sorts, but allowing main roster guys to beat the stuffing out of him isn't doing him any favors outside of showing his threshold for punishment. Sure, these matches are excellent athletic showcases, but if Dragunov is a rising star then he needs to be garnering some big wins underneath his belt. This just seems like on the job training with seasoned/much more experienced talent to educate Dragunov for higher profile matches down the road.

https://tearsofasaiyan.tumblr.com/post/190481029815

Nevertheless, this was an excellent match to kick off the show with and set the tone for the night. The right man went over with Bálor picking up the win.

Fatal 4-Way match for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship
Jordan Devlin defeated Angel Garza (c), Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, and Travis Banks

Devlin is another guy that I've heard that NXT UK is really high on as one of Bálor's former students, but I REALLY don't agree with taking the belt off Garza so soon. The guy just won it a few weeks ago and haven't had much time to do anything with his run outside of talking shit on commentary for a few weeks. On the positive side, I suppose this opens the door for more NXT UK talent to bounce back and forth on both shows to defend/challenge for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

This match was great, but there were far too many spots and instances where I literally shouted, "C'mon, that should have been the FUCKING finish!" only for guys to pop back up and do more shit for another few minutes. I know, we've been through this a million times now as that's the trend in modern wrestling, but goddamn that shit gets annoying sometimes. Every match doesn't have to go on like it's the main event at WrestleMania/Wrestle Kingdom.

Tag Team Match
DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) defeated Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven and Tyler Bate)

The first thing that went through my head watching this was that Trent Seven must have given up working out altogether like Jericho has over on AEW. This was a nice little dream match, even though I thought this went on a little too long at points. Either team could have won this match and people would have been happy. This was just fan service at this point. Nothing to complain about on my watch in regard to this match as a whole.

I can't speak for anyone else but I get nervous every time I see Ciampa take a head/neck bump and he immediately starts holding his neck, especially after the guy just came back from neck surgery. It'll pass like it did for me with Daniel Bryan coming back from retirement, but geez, there looked like there were a few close calls here.

Tegan Nox attacks Dakota Kai

Nothing to really write home about this since it was settling up their underwhelming match from this week's NXT TV episode. I don't understand why they couldn't hold that match off until the next TakeOver event in another month instead of blowing it off on free TV but that's a topic for another day.

Singles match for the NXT Women's Championship
Rhea Ripley (c) defeated Toni Storm

Out of the two showing for the women on this show, I have to say that this match was a little underwhelming. If I'm perfectly honest, I wasn't too impressed from their previous encounters on NXT UK either. This was a match with a lot of buzz behind it, but just didn't deliver to my expectations. That was added by the fact that Toni Storm failed to recapture the NXT UK Women's Championship from KLR at their Blackpool event a few weeks ago too, so both titles weren't on the line.

I love these two ladies and it hurts me to say it, but this match was easily the weakest thing on this entire card for the night.

Eight-Man Tag Team Match
Imperium (Walter, Fabian Aichner, Marcel Barthel, and Alexander Wolfe) defeated The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O'Reilly, Bobby Fish, and Roderick Strong)

Alexander Wolfe was taken out of the match early after he didn't lift his chin to safely take the incoming strikes from Fish and O'Reilly, only to be legitimately knocked out and carried to the back. It worked to the benefit of this match as Imperium was down to 3 vs. 4 disadvantage, even though I could have seen Walter easily take on all four members of Undisputed Era on his own if push came to shove.

Even I felt that chop. That shit sounded like a fucking gun shot. No way in hell I'd be agreeing to take any chops from Walter nor Strong.
Jesus.

Holy shit, Strong is incredible to hit an Olympic Slam on that big Austrian bastard.
At the end of the day, this match definitely lived up to the hype and delivered to the tee. If you don't watch anything else during this show, go out of your way to watch this match for the excitement from bell to bell. My only complaint in the closing moments was that both NXT and NXT UK were tied at three wins apiece without any tie-breaker. Who knows they could do this dance again during WrestleMania weekend too and I wouldn't complain if I'm perfectly honest.

WWE Evolution (WWE's 1st All-Women PPV Special) -- Results & Afterthoughts

WWE Evolution was a women's professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event, produced by WWE for their Raw, SmackDown, and NXT brands. It took place on October 28, 2018, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in Uniondale, New York. It was the first WWE pay-per-view to consist solely of women's matches.

Dark Match: NXT UK Women's Champion Rhea Ripley (c) def. Dakota Kai to retain

Since this match wasn't advertised for airing on the actual PPV, I'm guessing that WWE will show this on the Network exclusively at some point down the road once the NXT UK show catches up as they crowned Rhea Ripley as champion a while ago. The problem on the hold up was fishing for networks for this show before they settled on airing it on the WWE Network.

I have to tip my hat at Rhea Ripley heeling it up on her tweets and banter with Tegan Nox since her injury in the Mae Young Classic. That's how you keep kayfabe alive, folks.

Team Bestie (Trish Stratus & Lita) def. Alicia Fox & Mickie James w/ Alexa Bliss

The live crowd was eating this up as the opener as I felt like we were watching a match from 2006-2008ish with the four women involved. I thought some people had the nostalgia goggles on pretty heavy and fogged up as a lot of this match came off really sloppy at particular spots, yet the crowd continued to chant "YOU STILL GOT IT" during the duration of this match. I dunno about all that...

Even more surprising was that Bliss came in to shove Lita off the top rope during one of her initial Moonsault attempts. I thought WWE doctors won't even clear you to do even that much when they say you're suffering from a possible concussion? That just came off really weird. Still, the right team won here as the first feel-good moment of the evening. I did enjoy the combination of moves from Lita and Trish that picked them up the win.

If Lita and Trish are planning on sticking around for that possible inevitable Women's Tag Team titles announcement, then I hope they are going to polishing off that ring rust at the Performance Center.

Nia Jax wins 20-Woman Battle Royal for a Future Women's Championship Match

I can't speak for anyone else but from how the women here were given short entrances here and not really given much time to show the significance of the Legends and former women coming back to be a part of this match, I felt like I was watching the Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal from a few years ago that Santina Marella won as a complete joke to shit on the entire Divas division as a literal slap to the face at the time too.

The IIconics went out first and they were asking for it too after dragging on and on with their belittling of their competition. I swear those girls' voices sound like nails on a chalkboard. Molly Holly and Alundra Blayze went out not too long afterwards. We didn't even have time to even see a Molly Go Round (like at the Royal Rumble earlier this year) or a German Suplex from either. Talk about a damn waste...

Ivory joined Carmella for a 7 second dance break as how her and R-Truth have been doing on SmackDown! Live lately, only to get tossed out shortly afterwards. I will admit that all of the returning Legends and former Divas looked stunning here tonight, especially Torrie Wilson, Ivory, Michelle McCool, Molly Holly, Alundra Blayze, and Kelly Kelly.

Seeing McCool wreck some of the girls for a moment gave me deja vu to back when she had her own "Reign of Terror" on SmackDown! as the head of LayCool. It just tossed more salt into the open wound when the cameras panned back to Maryse watching at ringside with her husband, Miz Mizanin. If Maria Kanellis could have been in this thing for a few minutes then Maryse could've came in too for a hot minute too.

I want to know what is up with these teases for Tamina Snuka and Nia Jax squaring off in these battle royals/Rumble matches? It seemed like they were teasing a potential alliance but that came crumbling down the second it came down to the final moments of this bout. Speaking of alliances, I thought it was funny that the last fraction of Absolution (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville) came crumbling down when Mandy eliminated her own "bestie". I hope they don't split them up as it's the only thing that those two have going right now. Besides the fact, remember if WWE does green light this whole Women's Tag Team titles thing, they are going to need a lot of tag teams for it.

I had Ember Moon pegged to win this match and boy did I almost get trolled with Zelina Vega sneaking in and tossing both Nia and Ember over the top rope towards the end. That moment resulted in the death and destruction both Tamina and Zelina as Nia military pressed that poor girl out of the ring and into an unsuspecting Tamina at the bottom of the entrance ramp. I would be bloody surprised if Tamina doesn't have a concussion from that as she literally caught Zelina with her face during that spot.

Ember tried to bring it to Nia, but ultimately it wasn't enough as Nia tossed her over the top rope to pick up the win. From how much praise Nia gets outside of WWE in the media, I shouldn't be surprised with this decision. At the same time, I have remotely NO interest in another Ronda vs Nia match.

Toni Storm def. Io Shirai in the Mae Young Classic Finals to become the 2019 Mae Young Classic Tournament winner, winning a future NXT UK Women's Championship Match

I saw people raving about this match left and right on social media live last night, but I thought it was OK. These two women are no strangers to facing each other, having faced each other back in the STARDOM promotion in less than a year or so. In that regard, I felt that what we saw here was underwhelming in comparison. It's that same feeling of disappointment that I had when all of that hype and anticipation for AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura at WrestleMania was going to recreate their Wrestle Kingdom classic in a WWE ring, only to perform under WWE standards to lackluster results.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the effort here by both ladies, but I was just expecting a little more. At the same time, the finish on who was walking away as the winner was rather predictable too as Toni Storm was the only one who already had established entrance music and a custom Titantron made while Io Shirai was still using the generic stuff provided from the tournament. Not to forget that Toni Storm is already signed to NXT UK brand and this win is the most logical decision to put more eyes on that show.

Shayna Baszler def. Kairi Sane (c) to win the NXT Women's Championship for the second time

This match was good, but I didn't think it was as good as their previous outings. This is starting to become the female equivalent of the Gargano/Ciampa feud. NXT has to be careful here with Kairi and Shayna hogging the spotlight or crowds are going to start turning on them if they continue to beat a dead horse with this feud. It's time for someone else to get a shot.

I guessed it earlier that day that Jessamyn Duke and Marina Safir were going to debut and help Shayna regain the title. That being said, Kairi might not need much help as she was fighting off the Horsewomen on her own for the most part. I could easily see this leading into Shayna having her own female Undisputed Era from how this plays out going into the next TakeOver special. I just hope this doesn't lead into a female War Games match. No need to rush that now and save it for next year.

Natalya, Sasha Banks, and Bayley def. Riott Squad (Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan)

I went out for gas and a fast food snack at this point, but was continuing to watch on my phone's WWE Network app. Say what you want, but this was Liv Morgan's coming out party. Boy, did that girl turn a lot of heads with her performance in this match. That was miles above and beyond from her lackluster performances on both NXT and the main roster.

At the end of the day, the right team won though as Nattie, Sasha, and Bayley picked up the win. Now can we give all of these excessive Sasha and Bayley vs. Riott Squad matches a break? I don't even watch RAW and SmackDown! regularly anymore and I'm sick of hearing about it when I peak at the results every week.

Last Woman Standing Match - SmackDown! Women's Champion Becky Lynch (c) def. Charlotte Flair to retain

Easily the best thing on this card all night. If anyone tell you otherwise, they need to get their head examined. I don't know if it's the best main roster match in WWE history in relation to women's wrestling, but it's definitely up there in some fashion. This was the most compelling feud/angle going into this show and the ladies definitely delivered in what seemed like the definitive finale for this feud. Becky Lynch beat Charlotte Flair clean - it's time for both women to move on to something else and keep them apart from each other for a while.

RAW Women's Champion Ronda Rousey (c) def. Nikki Bella (w/ Brie Bella) to retain

I don't even see why this was even the main event. I understand that WWE considers Ronda to be their golden goose to lay them the golden eggs to keep WWE's women's divisions up on the radar in mainstream media, but there was no way that this match was going to top the one before it. Plus whatever happened to allowing the match with the hottest build go last?

I honestly was rolling my eyes at the bulk of this. I won't complain about Ronda selling for the Bella Twins here as she sold for Alexa Bliss at Summerslam for what felt like an eternity before she won that match, so I wasn't going into this match expecting a complete squash. In all honesty, it should have been one with Ronda Rousey going over as the definitive de facto woman to beat if she beat Nikki Bella in the same manner and as quickly as how Brock Lesnar did to John Cena at Summerslam 2014. Just hit her with a few moves and go home.

I get it... WWE wanted to paint the narrative that Nikki Bella was fighting as one of the last remnants of the Divas Era against this wave of current generation, legit ass-kickers who have been taking WWE's women's divisions by storm as of late.

Closing Thoughts

As of this writing (1/2/18), WWE already announced on Monday Night RAW that Ronda Rousey's next opponent will be Becky Lynch in a non-title match for the upcoming Survivor Series PPV. I honestly don't know how I feel about that as I can't see anyone benefiting from that match outside of maybe Rousey. It seems like WWE is doing anything they can to get Becky Lynch to be seen as a heel in their "universe" when the fans have universally accepted her as their new fan favorite. I don't see why they have to fight against this. Just go with it and profit off of it. It was bad enough that they were piping in boos during the PPV during her entrance when that entire Nassau crowd were collectively behind her during her match at the PPV. They need another strong female figure to build storylines and feuds around, so why not go with someone else that isn't named Charlotte Flair for once? The last thing they need is another disaster like how they mishandled Bayley, Sasha Banks, and ultimately Asuka over the past year. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I could go on about those missteps, but that would justify an entire separate post to cover that mess properly.

The biggest question coming out of this event is whether or not WWE are going to continue taking their women seriously following this event. Otherwise, it's just going to look like an "apology payday" for the women while they continue with the "No Girls Allowed" Saudi Arabia show AKA Crown Jewel (or Sweet Saudi Money 2: Electric Boogaloo as how Solomonster refers to it on his podcast...) that got a chorus of boos during this event. WWE has fine crop of women - spanning generations of talent from past to present that showed up in numbers for this event. That's something to be proud of, no matter how you felt about the individual talents. The women of WWE came out and represented in force and it was a solid show. I honestly wouldn't go as far as people were saying on social media that this was the best WWE show all year, but I'll say it was worth the time and effort. Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair killed it in their match while everything else on this show ranged from OK to passable. I just hope that WWE considers this a one and done and don't feature the women as prominently as they did with this platform, despite the fact I was rolling my eyes at how hard they were patting themselves on the back about this event that I could've sworn I could hear Vince McMahon burping in gorilla.

Episode 5

I'm still not feeling that they darkening the arena during matches. It makes this show look low budget when we know that's not the case with WWE backing this thing. On the plus side, at least this looks like a different crowd, but still at Full Sail.

Abby Laith def. Rachel Evers

Kassius Ohno is shown in the crowd to support his girlfriend, Rachel Evers. I didn't know that until I googled it during this match that they were dating. It seems weird that WWE would acknowledge that she's Paul Ellering's daughter, but don't allow her to use that last name.

Much like in Round 1, the story here continues to play up Abbey as the babyface underdog with Evers being the powerhouse. Evers is no Alpha Female, but there were some good spots in this match, with the colliding Yakuza Kick spot. Too bad that Abbey's Suicide Dive out of the ring was a bit sloppy on execution prior to that spot. Rachel put the exclamation point in this match on her offense with a sick top rope Powerslam, but ultimately fell to a Pop-Up Powerbomb followed by an Alligator Clutch for Abbey to pick up the win.

Definitely not a bad match to kick off these 2nd Round bouts.

Piper Niven def. Serena Deeb

There were tons of heavy hitting reversals in this match (no pun intended there) with Piper playing up her weight and size to her advantage over the scrawny looking Deeb. I hate to ask this again, but was Serena Deeb sick or something? I honestly don’t remember Deeb being this skinny prior, even without the implants when she was on the indies for last few years.

That being said, this was a fun match from bell to bell, despite having far too many rest holds for my taste. I thought it was very predictable that Piper was going to counter the Spear when Deeb went for it at the end, only to counter with the Michinoku Driver for the win. I know everyone keeps saying that Serena Deeb was the Brian Kendrick of this tournament, but I'm inclined to disagree with that logic. She's been in WWE previously, yes, but her return wasn't hyped up and showcased in a powerful manner like his was. That's not her fault at all, that's on WWE's behalf with their shitty narrative for this tournament for everything that's not related to MMA's Horsewomen. I want to add that this was another strong showing for Piper Niven in this tournament.

Mercedes Martinez def. Princesca Sugehit

The whole dynamic of this match had Mercedes' shoulder targeted by Sugehit over the course of this match, only for Mercedes to hit a Fisherman’s Buster and landing on her shoulder in the process, but still managed to pick up the win.

My only gripe here was Mercedes had no problem pulling that finish off after her shoulder was affected. At least she did sell it though. With Sugehit eliminated this early into the tournament, I guess we can pretty much rule her out from being signed. She's more likely set to go back to CMLL to make waves in that promotion after getting some mainstream exposure in a WWE ring.

Kairi Sane def. Bianca Belair

Okay, I changed my mind on what I said about Belair in the first round. She had a great showing here against the veteran Kairi Sane, especially for rookie at the Performance Center learning wrestling from scratch. If she can continue to work great matches like this then she definitely has a great future ahead of her in WWE.

Belair has an impressive power game on display in this match - stalling suplex, multiple Oklahoma Slam reversals, and even busting out a 450 Splash for a near-fall towards the end, even though she hesitated so damn long. She looked as nervous as Alexa Bliss does doing that Sparkle Splash from the top rope. Bianca Belair shouldn’t have repeated the hairwhip attack so much throughout as they completely exposed it. At one point I was stumped on how she was making that "crack" sound, but now I can see that Belair’s CLEARLY slapping her thigh for the sound effect.

My feelings on the overuse of slapping the thigh for moves in wrestling is a much needed discussion for another day though...

Kairi Sane's offense was definitely on point for sure. She landed a sick spinning backfist rebuttal on her comeback. I doubt she slapped her thigh upon impact either as that hit was loud enough to make me cringe. That being said, I felt that her Diving Elbow looked a lot safer here on the landing than it did the first time.

By the way, did anyone else notice how much athletic tape that Kairi Sane has covering up her neck and shoulders hidden underneath her hair? That makes me even more scared for her longevity in WWE.

All round solid match to end these first set of Round 2 bouts.

Episode 6

Toni Storm def. Lacey Evans

I swear this gif is hypnotizing me...

This was a pretty short and sweet match with both ladies getting their spots in. Lacey Evans performed an amazing ring apron sweep and Slingshot Elbow Drop combination that I don't think I have ever seen anyone else do before. Despite having a losing effort here in this second round I thought Lacey Evans did fine here. She had nothing to be ashamed of from her two performances in this tournament. The folks at the Performance Center must think highly of her and Belair to be able to make it this far in this tournament, especially for being one of the two rookies.

Toni Storm gave me another reason to love her even more (other than her bootilicious appeal) with her Strong Zero finisher.

Shayna Baszler def. Mia Yim

Fun fact: Shayna’s first wrestling match after her shift from MMA was against Mia Yim. So you could say that this was a rematch of sorts.

Bayley, Charlotte, Becky (no Sasha for some reason) were at ringside for this match along with Baszler’s friends (Ronda Rousey and the rest of MMA's Horsewomen). WWE clearly teasing a Horsewomen vs Horsewomen match at some point. You know WWE is making a big deal out of this when they had to move Izzy out of the way and had to pull Bayley off a house show appearance to be on this show.

That being said, this was a great 2nd round opponent for Shayna as they each compliment each others’ styles with the reversals and counters. Mia Yim carried Shayna throughout this match for a much better spectacle than what Shayna had against the rookie Zeda during the first round. The finish came in the form of a 450 Splash by Mia Yim being countered into Shayna's Rear Naked Choke for the win.

Dakota Kai def. Rhea Ripley

Don't ask me why, but for some reason I was confusing Rhea Ripley with Rhia O'Reilly. They don't even look the same but I kept confusing them for some odd reason. Rhea Ripley was formerly known as Demi Bennett before signing with WWE. Gosh I feel stupid for confusing those two ladies...

Somebody call a dentist for Dakota Kai, please.

As you can see from the image above, Rhea delivers a vicious Electric Chair Drop into ring apron to Dakota Kai. I'm shocked Kai didn't spit out a few teeth after a bump like that. The story of this match is pretty much that Dakota Kai is here to take all of the punishment that Rhea dishes out, only to sneak by with the win at the end.

Dakota Kai didn’t get in as many strikes as I would have liked here since both were hyping up their striking game prior to this for all of this tournament up to this point. Dakota Kai got the win with a Diving Corner Foot Stomp out of Rhea hanging in the Tree of Woe position for the win.

Candice LaRae def. Nicole Savoy

Nicole Savoy dominates bulk of this match with her technical, submission game with Candice barely hanging in there with last minute reversals and her sheer determination. Up to this point, I have to admit that I was not really too impressed with Gargano’s wife in this tournament, Nicole Savoy vs Shayna next round would’ve been the better bout for the Quarterfinal next round for the former Trifecta stable mates as Jim Ross pointed out on commentary.

I thought the match was fine for the most part, outside of their hesitation on setting up Candice’s finisher made the finish rather awkward in the end.

Episode 7

Mercedes Martinez def. Abbey Laith

I felt that the psychology here was off a bit. Abbey wasn’t the underdog here, but was working this match like she was the heel aggressor trying to exploit Mercedes’ “injured” shoulder. I'm not saying this was a bad match; it just seemed odd that they would change up Abbey's psychology at this point when she was doing well as the underdog babyface.

I don't know if it was planned or what but there was an awkward landing/fall off ring apron by Mercedes mid-match. With that spot in mind, I thought it was rather lame that Mercedes' shoulder “injury” had no impact on this match. If I'm being honest, I REALLY didn’t agree with the result here, as I felt that they should’ve went with Abbey in the finals but I believe WWE already signed her anyway. My only guess is that since Nicole Savoy is out, they wanted someone else who Shayna was familiar with work with her in the semi-finals.

Shayna Baszler def. Candice LaRae

This match opened with Candice LaRae hitting Suicide Dive to a Tornado DDT (Sami Zayn style) on the bottom of the entrance ramp. She follows that up with an Octopus Stretch a la AJ Lee (at least she applied it properly here unlike she did it half-assed against Savoy).

I want to add that Shayna’s doing better selling here than Mercedes Martinez was in the previous match. This match wasn't long at all but it's easy to see that WWE are clearly setting up Shayna as the top heel here much like Pete Dunne in the UK tournament.

Candice LaRae met her end as Miss LaRae’s Wild Ride was countered into the Rear Naked Choke by Shayna. Shayna Baszler maintains the hold post-match, while Johnny Gargano is struck with grief for heel heat. I'm pretty sure that Baszler could've taken Gargano too and that would've been a pretty fair fight too, but I'm just saying (laughs)!

This was pretty cool for getting heel heat on Baszler by kayfabe injurying Gargano's wife, who was the token babyface for Full Sail at this point since Abbey Laith already got eliminated earlier, but I was stomped on why the referee and officials on hand didn't simply reverse the decision and disqualify Baszler? They don't have to have her win the tournament if they want to establish her as a monster heel. The point was already made here. That being said, I guess it would be FAR too obvious if Kairi Sane won this thing at this point.

Toni Storm def. Piper Niven

I hope WWE signs Toni Storm just for I can oogle at her booty meat on the regular. Just DAYUM, girl.

Eye candy aside, this was my favorite match out of these next few episodes thus far. It was a fun match to watch, thanks to the chemistry between Toni and Piper. I hope people would cut Piper a break too. She's cute too for a "thick" gal. I hope WWE signs her too as they could use more "big girls" who can move and work like a powerhouse. I think the only thing that's stopping WWE if they haven't signed these two already is their commitments to both the UK promotions and STARDOM currently.

That was a impressive top rope back toss by Toni Storm to remove Piper from the top rope towards the end of this match, but I found the finish with the top rope leg drop to be pretty bland. That left me saying “That’s it?” when Toni Storm got the win off that. Other than that minor gripe with this match, I humbly suggest going out of your way to watch this match.

Kairi Sane def. Dakota Kai

I was glad to see more striking from Dakota Kai but much like Abbey/Mercedes it seemed like she was the heel aggressor here from the vibe that made this another odd match to watch.

The change in Dakota Kai's demeanor was obvious too as she changed up her hairdo, traded in her Bayley-esque ring gear, and wasn’t all smiles here.

Kairi Sane got her shots in too, so it’s wasn’t one sided in terms of offense.

There was a crazy reversal exchange towards the end of this match where Sane fell back into the Tree of Woe to avoid Kai's Diving Foot Stomp, only for Sane to get the Alabama Slam in rebuttal and follow up with the Diving Elbow Drop of Doom for the win.

That’s all she wrote here for this match as there was a bigger story to be told in a segment backstage.

So, the WWE Horsewomen and MMA Horsewomen stand-off backstage to tease a potential match for the near future. I'm guessing they are saving that for Survivor Series, but I could be wrong. Sue me, but I felt that the placement here was in really in bad taste. The focus of this tournament should be on the tournament entrants, NOT some celebrity outsiders and folks on the main roster already signed. Hype up a match between these two parties on RAW and SmackDown!, there's more than enough time on those two shows for that instead of taking time away from the hard-working women in this tournament. This would be like Gregory Helms getting in the face of Neville during the Cruiserweight Classic to egg on a future title match in the middle of that tournament.

Episode 8

Shayna Baszler def. Mercedes Martinez

The two remaining Trifecta (for some reason, Solomonster was convinced on his podcast that this stable didn't have a name since Lita and Jim Ross made no mention to it...) members going at it here, exchanging and matching each other hold for hold and strike for strike. Lita made her only keen observation of this tournament here on commentary, mentioning that Mercedes Martinez was the only person in this tournament that Shayna Baszler has bothered to shake the hand of out of respect.

The whole match saw Shayna selling the shit out of everything that Mercedes threw at her until Mercedes ultimately fell to the Rear Naked Choke from out of nowhere for the win. At this point of this tournament, this pattern is getting old with Shayna getting beat on the entire match just to lock in her submission for the win. I didn't like it when AJ Lee made a record-breaking career during her Divas Championship reign and I sure as hell don't like it here. I would love to see how this is going to play out in the live final with the crowd’s split between Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane.

I wasn’t too crazy about Triple H, Sarah Amato (who was dressed like she never wore a dress or wore make-up a day in her life), and Stephanie McMahon running into the ring to raise Shayna Baszler’s arm like she already won the entire tournament. It irked me even more to see Stephanie posing with Baszler like she already won.

Kairi Sane def. Toni Storm

I mentioned this during Episode 7 but I'm going to repeat myself here. Kairi Sane is wearing a TON of athletic tape behind her hair on her shoulders and neck. That makes me worry about the long term effects of her landing from executing that spectacular Diving Elbow Drop even more.

Toni Storm came closer to beating Kairi Sane in a believable manner than Mercedes did in the previous bout. The Bridging Armbar and the focus on her ailing shoulder and arm after the ringside spot (landing on the ramp grate) was all great psychology here. From reports online, this was the match where Sane suffered a concussion from that spot where she bashed her head against the side of steel grate at the bottom of the entrance ramp. I can believe it as it seemed like Sane was thrown off her game for the rest of the match that followed. These two have fought each other in a much better match in Stardom, so I'm inclined to believe that Sane's concussion here had an effect on her performance here. Don't get me wrong - this wasn't a bad match, but it wasn't the best performance for these two ladies to this point.

I’d hire Toni Storm just from how well she is as a worker and her ability to adapt to a variety of styles in this tournament. That would be a huge asset to the NXT women’s division in Asuka’s absence. I hope WWE gets with the program and opens their eyes to not only Toni Storm, but to a lot of the talented women in this tournament.

After the match, Sarah Amato, Stephanie McMahon, and Triple H congratulate Kairi Sane but none of the theatrics of Shayna’s victory. That alone left a bad impression on me as they have their favorites pegged out on who's going to win right off the bat before the finals.

Road To The Finals Special

This special aired after the September 11, 2017 edition of Monday Night RAW, exclusively on the WWE Network recapping the tournament up to this point and providing an exhibition match for the entertainment of the Full Sail crowd.

Jazzy Gabert, Kay Lee Ray, and Tessa Blanchard def. Santana Garrett, Sarah Logan, and Marti Belle

Just about everyone in this match came off like a stars in this match. If WWE doesn't sign the bulk of these ladies, then they are fucking nuts. I'm glad to see that Tessa and Santana toned down the spray tanning or at least wiped off the excess off, so they don't look like Oompa Loompas here. The only person who seemed to missed a few steps was Marti Belle, but this match was a far cry from that colossal failure that was her match in the first round.

I thought the girls did great here with Jazzy Gabert being the shining star out of the entire thing, but if I had any complaint with this match, I thought it was too short. If they really wanted to make a statement with Jazzy's dominance, they should have had her lay waste to all three members of the opposing team in convincing manner instead of having Sarah Logan sliding in at the last second trying to break the pin.

If WWE does the Mae Young Classic again, I hope they use this commentary team of Nigel McGuinness, Tom Phillips, and Beth Phoenix. Beth Phoenix was a massive improvement over Lita in the insightful role as the veteran female talent. In all due respect to Jim Ross' legendary commentary status, but this tournament was not his best work. With one match, this team did miles above and beyond the work that the team of Lita and Jim Ross have done as a whole with this tournament. I'm honestly dreading going back to them calling the finals after SmackDown! live.

Following the match, the Full Sail crowd is chanting "Please Sign Jazzy" towards Triple H, who asks them to stop doing that as it cost him too much money during the Cruiserweight Classic, but adds that he wanted to take a moment to thank the WWE Universe for making this opportunity possible for women's wrestling.

That moment was all well and good, but it's times like this is where I feel like the Full Sail crowds come off extremely moronic. There were 5 other talented women in this match (Okay, Marti Belle not so much...) that deserved to be praised for their performance in this match and this tournament as well.
