WWE Extreme Rules (May 22, 2016) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Extreme Rules (2016) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by WWE. It took place on May 22, 2016, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It was the eighth event under the Extreme Rules chronology.

** Preshow ** No DQ Match - Baron Corbin def. Dolph Ziggler

Not even Ziggler can make me give a damn about Baron Corbin. I've said it at least every week since he was called up to the main roster that he's not ready for this position. Corbin is boring on every aspect that you can look at him. To say that this was a no disqualification match you wouldn't even noticed from how the match was worked.

I cracked up laughing at Ziggler selling a LOW BLOW from Corbin like he got shot before he took the End of Days for that L. Someone explain to me why big guys like Corbin and Undertaker have to use a low blow to gain an upper hand when they are already supposed to be dominant and over-powering against their opponents?

Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows def. The Usos - Extreme Rules Match

In a bizarre twist of irony, Jey Uso fell on top of the ring bell (obvious throwback to Gallows' previous WWE run as Festus), allowing Anderson and Gallows to hit the Magic Killer for the win.

This is one situation where WWE's 50/50 booking is really hurting guys. How in the world are Anderson/Gallows supposed to stand out from the rest of the boring teams of the tag division if they couldn't beat the Usos of all people in dominating fashion. I don't hate the Usos unlike most fans, but damn, this one dragged out longer than I thought it would have.

I still have a feeling they are going to be heavily involved in the main event. I guess we'll see but I'm writing this as I'm watching AND live-tweeting the show.

Rusev def. Kalisto (c) to become the NEW United States Championship

Kalisto showing that he can look like a million bucks against bigger opponents left and right. First with Ryback and now with Rusev. Sadly, there wasn't much else to write home about his US title reign other than a few decent matches here and there. Nothing against Kalisto but he was a complete afterthought in terms of booking lately. I'm anxious to see Rusev continue where he left off before him and Lana were split up roughly a year ago. With Big Match John coming back in another week, I'm sure they are going to book Rusev/Cena IV for Summerslam this year.

As for Kalisto, the tag team division needs the Lucha Dragons desperately to freshen things up on a competitive level. I can't even remember if they've even held the tag titles since coming up from NXT.

One thing I have to notice about Lana's managerial performance at ringside is that she was a lot less animated as she was in the past. I don't know if someone told her to do less or something but it was throwing me off a bit to see her do less when she's normally a much more "lively" character at ringside. She's still got the facials and stuff down but she's not doing much else.

The New Day (c) def. The Vaudevillains to retain the Tag Team Championships

Pretty average match save for the finish and the near-fall spot where the Vaudevillains took out Big E and Kofi at ringside and hit their finish on Woods only for him to surprise the WWE Universe by kicking out. I was more shocked at reactions on Twitter that people weren't aware that Woods is actually a good wrestler. Hello, he's been on the WWE roster prior to this retarded gimmick. Then he was one hell of an X-Division champion in TNA too.

I really wish Big E would quit doing that suicide dive/spear spot out of the ring during every other match. He's landing on his head and/or arms and just bound to break something within this slew of injuries WWE has not bounced back from on the main roster.

A title win for the Vaudevillains could have helped them get over. Let's be serious here. Exactly how long do you think this gimmick is going to work on the main roster until WWE forces them to be repackaged? At least it wasn't a failure at launch like the Ascension or Emma's dancing gimmick...

As popular as the New Day are, people seem to forget that titles are for getting people over who can't get over on their own. When you're more over than the title you're carrying it's time to move to something else and propel someone else for that spot.

Fatal 4-Way Match - The Miz (c) def. Cesaro, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn to retain the Intercontinental Championship

Definitely a match of the night candidate with everyone shouting "Fight Forever" - echoing the chants from NXT Takeover: Dallas between Zayn and Nakamura from WrestleMania weekend. This is going to be a hard match to top on this card. Great work from all four men involved.

I'm not a Miz fan but he's definitely one of WWE's best pure heels (who doesn't need cheap pops or cheap heat nor flip flops to get over with the fans) and it's going to mean a lot more for whoever the babyface is that's going to beat him. Owens and Zayn can easily bounce back from this loss while Cesaro is going to have to do something to get his momentum back, but that shouldn't be too hard given his skillset.

Compared to Lana, Maryse is the complete opposite tonight when it came to being animated and supporting her man at ringside. Maybe one of the agents told Lana to scale it back a bit for she wouldn't step on Maryse's shoes a bit here? I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too much into that.

First Ever Asylum Match - Dean Ambrose def. Chris Jericho

I didn't care when they fought earlier this month and I honestly don't care in this glorified rip-off of TNA's Lethal Lockdown match mixed with Monster's Ball. Ambrose won by busting out the thumb tacks and hitting the Dirty Deeds on that for the win. Really surprised that the E would bring that weapon back out since like forever, but this event needed something truly "hardcore" to stand out.

Until that spot, this match ultimately boils down to being a huge cock tease for pending violence that almost never happens. It's still pretty awkward to see these hardcore matches without an ounce of blood in them at all too. At least the ending of this match remedied that situation slightly after the two moves onto the thumb tacks.

I guess Ambrose really is crazy if he dropped himself onto the tacks just to beat Jericho...

I hope this feud is over at this point. It's dragged on long enough. Ambrose needs to move onto someone else and get his eyes back on a bigger prize... preferably the WWE Championship.

The most whored out weapon in the PG-era landscape of WWE has to be the kendo stick. I would love to see a lot less of that weapon in the future if possible.

Submission Match - Charlotte (c) def. Natayla to retain the Women's Championship

Goddamn this fucking match. I don't have a problem with Dana Brooke as a person but I absolutely hated this finish. It was already bad enough that this match was below-average for what both of these women are capable of, but they just had to end it with Dana dressed up as Ric Flair to distract Nattie long enough for Charlotte to get the win?

Anyone who watches NXT should be able to tell you how moronic it is to align Charlotte and Dana Brooke together when they both wanted nothing to do with each other when they were feuding on that brand. Just typical WWE Creative booking this shit to fill in the gaps since Emma is injured and to leave Becky high and dry without a feud. This isn't a promotion in the least; Dana just went from being Emma's partner/sidekick to being Charlotte's goon/lackey. It's not like Charlotte needed anyone else in her corner when Ric Flair is already muddling that up in that aspect and holding her down in her career, but damn. Just when I thought WWE can't find more ways to devalue women's wrestling during this whole Divas Revolution, they find a way to make it even more stupid.

I'm honestly getting fed up of this settling for less when it comes for women's wrestling in WWE, no rather in WWE's booking and storylines as a whole. Fans complain and they cave in a sense to throw fans a bone to make them shut up for the time being. For example, when fans complained about the WWE Divas not getting much air time on the main roster like the NXT Divas, they called up Sasha Banks, Charlotte, and Becky Lynch all in fell swoop to kickstart a "revolution". The Divas Revolution didn't go as how fans hoped as every woman was just as generic and cookie cutter as before, just stuck into stereotypical factions/tag teams. So what did WWE do to stop fans shitting on it? They stripped away the term "Diva", made Charlotte the first "Women's Champion" with a rebranded title. At the end of the day, they are still doing the same shit as before. Women are booked slightly better than a year ago, but the match quality is roughly the same since the veteran women are getting used more among the string of injuries thanks to everyone else. This still hasn't stopped Creative from booking some absolutely moronic finishes to these last few title defenses.

People keep calling it that Natalya's being "protected" but I fail to see how this is a legitimate argument. It's more akin to that Charlotte is being protected for whatever reason (more so than Nikki Bella in her record-breaking Divas title reign). She was protected at WrestleMania when it was clear her opponents were much more over than her and the crowds were ready for them to win the title for the first time. She was protected two weeks ago at Payback when WWE rehashed the Montreal Screwjob for the finish of a women's wrestling match. It's not making Charlotte look like a "strong" champion at all when she can't get the job done herself, even when her father was banned from ringside.

Boy, and people said that Samoa Joe's first and only title run in TNA was portrayed as weak with the bullshit finishes...

Seriously though, how is anyone supposed to take women's wrestling in WWE seriously when the competitive aspect goes out of the window at every opportunity in favor of something that doesn't show the champion as a credible athlete and deserving of said title?

Extreme Rules Match - Roman Reigns (c) def. AJ Styles to retain the WWE Championship

While I wasn't too crazy about the brawling in the crowd at the beginning of this match, I appreciated that someone finally used the preshow panel set for something for once. I was a little bummed out that the glass table didn't shatter from Styles being dropped onto it though.

For the rest of this match, Styles and Reigns killed each other to the point I was wondering if Styles must have insulted Reigns' mother to generate so much aggression from Roman during this match. Even the run-ins from the Usos and Anderson/Gallows made much more sense here and added to the drama of the match as they handily helped each Superstar attempt to get pins over the opposition and broke pin attempts. It all made SENSE - something that's rare in the current landscape of WWE storylines. AJ Styles and Roman Reigns kept upping the scales with the damage back and forth, even though it seemed like Reigns was thrashing Styles handily in a convincing manner at one point. If I had any issues with this match it's the fact that Styles telegraphed the counters for Reigns a bit TOO much and the fact that Reigns really didn't sell anything until Anderson and Gallows came out to even the odds.

Another thing older fans seem to forget that title matches used to be anything goes but damn, this match and the bulk of this entire PPV wasn't really "extreme" at all. They could have knocked out or blindsided the referee and still did all of these spots anyway. I'm not really trying to knock AJ Styles nor Roman Reigns as I thought they did phenomenal - no pun intended - for what they were given to work with in this spot.

From a storyline perspective, I got a feeling that AJ Styles flipping out with the steel chair towards the end of the match could be figuratively the point where Styles has accepted Gallows and Anderson's way of thinking. That could lead into the Authority being brought back into the fold backing Rollins once again. With Rollins already back as a heel (obvious by him attacking Reigns post-match), I'm guessing they are going to pick up where they left off on his run before his unfortunate injury last year.

Speaking of Rollins, I kinda wish that WWE played his music first before he came out as the crowd's reactions ruined his return before they showed him on camera - that is if you didn't see the news leaked out on almost every other website before the event even started.

What didn't sit well with me with this match was the reactions by fans on social media after the end result. C'mon you have to be fucking stupid to think that a decorated high profile champion and former TNA/Impact Wrestling wrestler - no matter who they are - will win WWE's top title within their first few months of being employed there. AJ Styles is lucky to even be in this position PERIOD. Tonight's match and the one at Payback were both great matches, but Styles didn't do it on his own - it was a team effort along with Reigns. That being said I wish fans would quit giving that guy such a hard time as he's actually pulling his weight in the ring. It's not like he's being thrown around like a ragdoll with next to no offense (AJ Lee) or being carried through the bulk of his matches (Ultimate Warrior, Batista, Charlotte, etc. - take your pick). The guy can actually work.

Roman Reigns may be The Guy, but Seth Rollins is THE MAN.

Welcome back, Architect. WWE's main event scene is in need of some restructuring.
Closing Words

Like mentioned above, Extreme Rules was a mediocre event, with only the Intercontinental, United States, and WWE Championship matches sticking out as the best of what this event had to offer. Sadly, this event is starting to stray far away from the extreme aspect completely. Outside of the Asylum Match, this entire event was your average run of the mill PPV.

Seth Rollins is back in the mix, aiming for the title that he never lost thanks to his injury last year and we're a week away from the return of John Cena. Looks like Money in the Bank is going to shape up to be "money" with it's major players back on the table.

NXT Takeover: Respect -- Results & Afterthoughts

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, WWE held NXT Takeover: Respect exclusively on the WWE Network at their native home at the Full Sail University. This event served as the finale to the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament with the Rhodes family in attendance to present the winners with the commemorative trophy. This event also marked the first ever Ironman Match between two women on the WWE roster as Sasha Banks and Bayley face off in what (should be) many believe to be their final encounter over the NXT Women's Championship as this event's main event. Please note that this is the first event where the NXT Championship is NOT on the line.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Semi-Final Match - NXT Champion Finn Balor & Samoa Joe def. The Mechanics

I’ve openly expressed this a lot lately and I don’t see the reasoning why should the NXT Champion be in a TAG TEAM tournament when the damn actual Tag Team Champions (the Vaudevillains) were already eliminated EARLY into the tournament? Oh wait, it’s because WWE hasn’t bothered to build up any other Superstar up to Finn’s level, so we’re doing filler until we figure shit out? They would have challengers if NXT doesn’t automatically push every “insanely over” indie guy they sign to the moon and somehow have them in the NXT title picture within a month. Kevin Owens was on NXT for less than 6 months and made it to the main roster. I would have had Finn and Joe lose early in the tournament – much like the team of Solomon Crowe & Neville (GOD this would’ve been an AMAZING 1v1 solo feud) - due to Joe turning on Finn and inserting himself as the next challenger to his title. It’s obvious we’re never getting that “proper” Samoa Joe vs. Kevin Owens feud that was teased at Takeover a LONG while back so let’s go in this route until Hideo Itami is healed up.

This match wasn’t bad as the Mechanics are a pair of heavy-hitters – I’m still not too crazy about their ring work as they are a bit sloppy and look rather unsafe (that match from one of the TV tapings with them versus the Hype Bros. where they dropped Zack Ryder on his damn neck/head from the move without any way to land properly out of the corner). They played up Finn getting “injured” while Joe played the support role as the Mechanics segregated the ring. My only problem with this match was the fact that Finn did his finisher without any problems to say that his knee/leg was fucked up. So much for playing up the injury, buddy.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Semi-Final Match
 - Baron Corbin & Rhyno def. Jason Jordan & Chad Gable

This was the match that ruined my mood for the rest of the night. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again. Baron Corbin is as exciting as watching paint dry. To say that WWE is determined to get this guy over by feeding him countless Superstars (many of which who are FAR more talented than him) to job to him just continues to piss me off that this undeserving clown continues to get pushed to the moon just because of his physique. Perfect example was tonight’s match where Chad Gable, who I have NO problem admitting that I have quickly become a fan of, worked his ass off (along with Jason Jordan, who is already one hell of a worker) in this match to no avail.

The best ending for Jordan/Gable’s storyline was to have them overcome the odds, beat Corbin/Rhyno (whose pairing makes little to NO sense to begin with after Rhyno lost to the guy and never got a rematch) and defeat a weakened Finn and Joe in the finals. Joe gets upset at Finn’s “weakness” and goes heel by turning on his partner after Jordan/Gable’s celebration. Do we get this scenario? Nope. What we get is Gable pulling out everything under the sun to try to defeat Corbin, including the freakin’ CHAOS THEORY (Rolling Bridging/Deadlift German Suplex – thank you, Doug Williams), yet STILL jobs to this fool? I’m sorry but FUCK Baron Corbin. Never liked that dude, never will.

That being said, I’m ready, willing and GABLE for a NXT Tag Team Championship feud between Jason Jordan and Chad Gable versus the Vaudevillains down the road. Well… I’m down for anything to get the Dubstep Brothers out of the #1 contender spot.

Asuka def. Dana Brooke (w/ Emma) in her NXT debut

Before we actually talk about this match, let's talk about how WWE pulled a first here on NXT, where we had the Divas interrupting a Superstar during his interview backstage as we saw an overly confident Dana Brooke interrupt Apollo Crews. Bravo on this WWE. I would love to see more of this with Superstars interacting with Divas and vice versa instead of acting like they exist in two different realities in WWE.

The first thing that I was surprised about watching this match was the fact that Asuka didn’t have a “stereotypical” entrance theme and music like how WWE traditionally tends to treat the Japanese wrestlers who cross over into their kingdom. The second was that they allowed Asuka to wear her ring gear that’s borderline lingerie. I thought the toe-shaped sneakers were a nice touch to give her more that “lioness” flair that she was going for since the woman formerly known as Kana is taking up the joshi legend Lioness Asuka’s name in WWE. Bravo, WWE. That was definitely a nice touch.

I could almost literally hear the toilet flush as Dana Brooke's momentum
goes down the drain...

As for the match itself, this was one of two matches that I wasn’t too crazy about having the newcomers come in and throw your established talent or rather in Dana Brooke’s case, your work in progress, underneath the bus. From all of the momentum that Dana Brooke was starting to garner with her new attitude and starting to get a few wins underneath her belt after being thrown to the bottom of the ladder by Charlotte on the way out of the door to the main roster, this loss just sets her right back to square one in my eyes. Asuka punked out Emma post-match so there’s not going to be a rematch that’s going to remedy the embarrassment that Dana Brooke suffered here. One could argue that she’s a heel and heels are supposed to be humiliated, but in Dana’s case, this was more than humiliation. It seemed like WWE was “humbling” her with a match against an opponent like this. Asuka went out of her way to humiliate her gimmick and character and dominate Dana in every aspect of the match.

Emma got punked out quicker than guys scared of Deebo on Friday...
(Laughs) Even I’ll admit that Dana’s had that coming for MONTHS now though… I bet Devin was watching that match backstage with a bag of popcorn.

Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if Asuka goes on as a dominant heel going forward, while the pairing of Emma and Dana Brooke is left on the sidelines for the time being.

Apollo Crews def. Tyler Breeze

This was the second match that I wasn’t too crazy about having established talent thrown underneath the bus against a newcomer. Tyler Breeze NEVER seems to get a break in these Takeover events and I would love to see him win at least once for crying out loud. To say that NXT were heavily invested in this guys’ character at one point, only to have him lose again and again is really making me question what does NXT have planned for Breeze in the long-term. This guy is constantly being shafted when it comes to being the next guy to challenge for the NXT title.

If WWE aren't going to use the guy to his full potential, I humbly suggest pairing Breeze with Dolph Ziggler and go for Midnight Rockers 2.0.

As for Apollo Crews, he's an amazing athlete so I don't want to sell the guy short but I feel like WWE is pushing him too fast too soon. I don't want to see him end up like how Big E was after his stellar NXT run. As much as people may love the New Day right now, I seriously doubt that WWE has ANY aspirations to allow any member of that faction challenge for the gold. We all know how WWE treats their black wrestlers by now...

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Finals – NXT Champion Finn Balor & Samoa Joe def. Baron Corbin & Rhyno to win the tournament

The entire match revolved around Finn's half-selling of the "injury" that he suffered in the first match until he was able to get the hot tag to Samoa Joe. I felt like this was deja vu from the first matches from both teams as they recycled a lot of the same spots, i.e. the Black Hole Slam counter by Corbin, Joe coming in off the hot tag and cleaning house with the Powerslam, Running Senton, and Corner Chokeslam signatures, then Rhyno getting that desperation Gore off during the "go-home" sequence of the finish.

I don't want to complain about Finn and Joe winning but it seemed like the dynamic and drama was lost by this point - at least for me it was that way. Hell, I was still in a sour mood after Jordan and Gable were wrongly eliminated from this tournament. Would it have killed them to at least book at least ONE legitimate tag team instead of two slapped together last-second additions for this thing that are going to split up the second this tournament is over?

Lord forgive me but that trophy looks as stupid as the Ultimate
Warrior Award statue at WrestleMania this year...
Then the celebration seemed a bit bittersweet as there wasn't any turns of teams dissolving like everyone was expecting that would happen. Baron Corbin and Rhyno didn't seem too upset over the win, which was rather strange that they openly stated that they were merely paired up just out of circumstances of that tournament. It was even stranger for the winners as there was no heel turn from neither Finn Balor nor Samoa Joe either. Instead, Samoa Joe and Finn Balor were all smiles and hugs after winning the tournament.

On a positive note, that was a powerful speech by Cody Rhodes on behalf of his late father and I'm proud to be a member of the Rhodes family, even if it was just for that shared moment like this.

30 Minute Ironman Match for NXT Women’s Championship – Bayley def. Sasha Banks 3 to 2 to retain the title

When I posted my predictions for this show on social media prior to the event, I had little faith that this match would surpass their bout at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn two months ago and I have to admit that I was correct. In that match there was a lot more drama to behold in that match, but here the match merely chugged along with a lot of bad spots and miscues/awful timing, but it wasn't a complete flop. Both Bayley and Sasha Banks are talented workers and play off brilliantly off of each other in-ring, but wrestling for 30 minutes didn't seem to do them for any favors.

So much for the training montage when their endurance was cut in half here. Where it took them roughly 18 minutes to score a single pinfall on each other at Brooklyn, it took less than 10 minutes to pinfalls on each other during this event.

I have to mention the crowd at this point and say that bringing the Takeover special back to Full Sail University didn't do them any favors in my eyes as the chants were distracting to the match itself. We get it, you’re excited and want to express your excitement for the ladies of NXT getting an opportunity this big, but sometimes the Japanese approach to wrestling fandom is the appropriate one where you SHUT THE FUCK UP and enjoy the awesomeness in silence and out of respect.

Sasha Banks... making her haters cry, one kid at a time.
My favorite part of the match was when Sasha took it onto herself to get a massive amount of heel heat by making Bayley's #1 fan in the front row start crying. WWE were cold-blooded to keep recording the kid's reactions throughout the match as that just tossed more fuel on the fire of Sasha's red-hot heel antics. I tip my hat to Sasha Banks for acting like a proper heel in a match like this. A LOT of WWE's so-called heels tend to forget that they are supposed to be trying to getting booed instead of cheered.

The final fall came down to the wire where Bayley locked in what looked like a variation of Perry Saturn's Rings of Saturn submission hold, which forced Sasha Banks to submit (well it wasn't really clear with the bad camera angle...) with 3 seconds left on the clock to allow Bayley to retain. Cool, but I felt that they tried to replicate the Bret Hart versus Shawn Michaels dynamic enough here from the multiple rest holds during the early phase of the match to the array of submissions thrown around left and right during the final moments.

Closing Thoughts

I'll agree with most critics and say that this event was miles above and beyond what we've been given on Monday Night RAW and Friday Thursday Night Smackdown! over the last few months. Seriously, that's not really saying much though. The Dusty Classic garnered some excitement while NXT's newest additions definitely made an impact tonight and Sasha and Bayley delivered on a main event platform.

You would think that Sasha was going into the Hall of Fame after this post-match
celebration. I know Lita's going like damn...
Did I think that the flowers and post-match celebration with the ENTIRE roster, staff, and crew applauding from the entrance ramp was necessary? No, I felt that was a little overboard, especially after Sasha, along with Charlotte, Bayley, and Becky Lynch, killed kayfabe at Takeover: Brooklyn when they celebrated in the ring post-match. So I'm supposed to just ignore all of that and act like you two have a "heated" rivalry again? Sorry, but you single-handedly killed the dynamic that made the match at Brooklyn so great with that. If they wanted to congratulate and celebrate with the Divas on their triumph moment on a main event platform they could have done this backstage and off-camera (or even film it for one of those wonderful WWE:24 specials on the WWE Network) keep kayfabe alive for those of us who like to be caught up in the characters. Don't get me wrong, I applaud the ladies for their achievement here at this level, but with the women completely breaking character afterwards is making the product look bad as a whole if I'm being perfectly honest.

How can WWE expect their viewers to get invested in their product when their wrestlers can't even keep invested in playing these characters themselves? Is this supposed to be the main draw of this "Reality Era" of WWE, that we as fans are supposed to be content with heel and face ailments have no weight whatsoever?

REVIEW: NXT (July 29th, 2015)

Greetings to all. ZX is truly a kind individual and once again let me contribute to one of his already established blogs. I always thought that my first article about wrestling will be something grand and elaborate. An in-depth analysis why John Cena is underrated by the online wrestling community or maybe why The Undertaker shouldn’t have came back at “Battleground”. Yet, today I am writing my very first review of a wrestling show. And that show is the highly praised and beloved WWE NXT, which aired last night, July 29th. I won’t try to reinvent the wheel, so this article will be a simple match by match afterthoughts from a person who doesn’t think that she knows business better than a billion dollar company.

Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady vs. Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson

The night started with the traditionally comedic entrance of the “Jersey Shore” trifecta. I don’t know if it is just me, but Enzo’s tan always makes me cringe. But nonetheless, the gimmick is somewhat amusing and not every wrestler can make the crowd learn his entrance. Yet, I am not entirely sure that this gimmick can stay fresh for a long period of time. Especially if we’re talking about a possible call up to the main roster.
Facing the Mechanics (Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson) Big Cass and Enzo really got a run for their money. Of course, the match did follow the traditional tag team outline that can be seen not only on NXT, but also on the flagship WWE programming. The heels cornered in the faces, a few hot tags, cleaning house, the Jersey natives seem ready to finish this… And the team of Wilder and Dawson, taking out Enzo after a chase around the outside of the ring, score a win with quite an impressive finisher called “Shatter Machine”.
Since the Vaudevillains are building a feud with the current champs, it is lovely to see the other teams getting a fair chance to impress and build a feud of their own. Wilder and Dawson came off as strong contenders and I am actually interested to see how will they get booked in the future.

Baron Corbin vs. Jesse Sorensen

Let the squash matches begin. Baron Corbin defeated Jesse Sorensen (a TNA alumni) in 22 seconds. Okay. I think I somewhat understand where this is supposed to be going. An arrogant and douchy jock heel is being built up as a threat and (maybe) possible rival for the beloved “Demon” Finn Balor, who currently holds the NXT Championship. But the problem is that Corbin doesn’t come off as threat by beating “unknown” jobbers in less than a minute. Of course, the idea of him coming in, not even in his ring gear, applying his “End of Days” finisher and leaving sounds good on paper. Yet, the fact that he doesn’t fight NXT regulars and two weeks in a row had squash matches takes away from any possible heel powerhouse build up. Baron Corbin now comes off as someone that WWE desperately wants to push, but only pushes him face first into mud.

Levis Valenzuela Jr. and Elias Samson vs. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan

Squash #2. But since it followed Corbin’s “Blink and you might just miss it” match, this tag team showdown seemed a lot stronger in comparison. I wasn’t too interested to watch this one, since Jordan and Gable’s trash talking promo was okay (I still have this huge problem with wrestlers cutting promos while talking sideways, with their backs to the interviewer and most possibly reading cue cards with a blank stare), but I have to give props for managing to make the match seem refreshing after Corbin’s snoozefest. Gable actually got quite a huge pop from the crowd after tagging in and the guys seem to work well with each other. There is a chance that this tag team might actually work. But Jordan, please, next time doing a promo - emote.

Charlotte vs. Dana Brooke

Now this one was a doozy. I read in a few reviews of the match that Dana should have won. But personally I think the outcome of the match was clear from the get go when the battle of the blondes was announced last week. Charlotte is a prized possession. The former NXT Women’s Champion since her debut on RAW as a part of the Divas Revolution was booked as a dominant force scoring wins right of the bat and even overshadowing “Casper the Unfriendly Ghost” Paige in the process. You can notice that she is being groomed to eventually beat either Nikki Bella or her successor for the belt. So booking her against an improving, but still very mediocre Dana Brooke had a very easily predictable outcome. Plus, we know that next week the Nature Girl is facing Bayley, who is the only contender to challenge current champ Sasha Banks. With the possibility of Bayley pulling out a win to establish herself as a future NXT Women’s champion, there was no way in hell the creatives would have given Charlotte two loses in a row on NXT. Yet this match did have potential. But since it took around 5 minutes and some of the time was lost to squeeze in Emma’s cliche distractions and some trash talking in the beginning, we had less than that to see actual wrestling. Right now I am not sure what is in store for Dana Brooke and her confidante Emma, since neither of them look like legit threats that could take the division by storm or that they are ready to be the top heels who would go against the babyface Bayley.

Kevin Owens in Action

Since Dana got squashed in her match, I’ll let myself call this Squash #4. After last week’s contract signing for a main event (this kind of event was even mocked on RAW before Battleground by Paul Heyman) Owens had his first in ring appearance on NXT after losing the belt at “Beast in the East”. I don’t know what black cat walked between Owens and the bookers at WWE, but since “Battleground” all of his momentum has gone down the drain. With every show Owens looks weaker and tonight’s match seemed like a big step back from what we had at after his debut on the main roster. His match against “jobber” Martin Stone gave nothing, because just like with Corbin, Owens stomped on an unknown wrestler. And that takes away from the validity of the match. Sure, he did attack him afterwards and mocked Balor on the entrance ramp, but that didn’t make him look even half as dominant as he was that night when he debuted against John Cena. I think it is high time to let Owens go, let Balor retain at TakeOver and see if KO can stand tall against the Swiss Superman, Cesaro. His time here is simply up.

NXT Tag Team Title Match: The Vaudevillains vs. Buddy Murphy and Wesley Blake

Hands down the strongest match of the evening. And not that it was that good. There was nothing better on the card. Well, maybe except for the opener tag match, which was on a similar level. The Vaudevillains dominated the ring and looked stronger than the reigning champions. I still don’t really get Blake & Murphy and what are they supposed to be. Adding Alexa Bliss as their manager didn’t help either. In my diletant opinion the team lacks chemistry. But that’s just me. The Vaudevillains are actually quite entertaining and their in ring abilities are more than impressive. I think that Gotch has a chance to shine in singles competition as well. Blake and Murphy act like typical heels, nothing new or that you could call “their own”. Well, at least the crowd had fun chanting “C’mon, Barbie, let’s go party!” at Blake’s ravishing bleach blond locks and bright pink tights. But that is pretty much where the fun stops as Alexa Bliss pulled on English’s legs, quick roll up and the match ended with Barbie Glam Squad retaining. I do hope that at TakeOver The Vaudevillains will get a rematch and will become Tag Team Champions. Gotch and English not only have quite the unique gimmick, but also are cemented as a strong tag team and look dominating in the ring. To me they seem better and more deserving title holders.

P.S. A note for the lovely Alexa Bliss. I do understand that she was once a cheerleader and they are supposed to paint their faces for the back row. But this is High Definition television. I noticed more than once that her makeup is waaaay too heavy and reminds of drag, when she is an insanely beautiful young woman. Just toning it down a couple of notches would be stellar.

All in all, I honestly think that this NXT was one of the more disappointing wrestling programs I have seen. 4 squash matches, 3 of them leading to nowhere, a title defense, with the outline that we know by heart and some stiff promos…. Yeah… Back to watching “Lucha Underground”.
