QUICKIE -- Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a 2016 American superhero film featuring the DC Comics characters Batman andSuperman. Directed by Zack Snyder and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is a follow-up to 2013's Man of Steel and is the second installment in the DC Extended Universe. It was written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the first live-action film to feature Batman and Superman together, as well as the first live-action cinematic portrayal of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. In the film, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor manipulates Batman into a preemptive battle with Superman, whom Luthor is obsessed with defeating.

A director's cut, dubbed the Ultimate Edition with 30 minutes of additional footage, was released digitally on June 28, 2016, and on Blu-ray and DVDon July 19, 2016.

Plot:

Bruce Wayne arrives in Metropolis during the Battle of Metropolis. He tries to proceed to the Wayne Financial Building, giving the order via phone for the people inside to evacuate. As he drives his way to the building, he narrowly avoids the debris from the crashing Fortress of Solitude with Superman and Zod inside. He witnesses the Black Zero as Kal-El's Phantom Drive crashes into it and crushes the Black Zero into a singularity. As Superman and General Zod begin to fight, Zod throws Superman into the Wayne Financial Building and Zod's uncontrollable heat vision causes the building to collapse in ruin. Horrified, Bruce makes his way through the debris looking for survivors, finding Wallace Keefe trapped underneath some rubble. He helps rescue him then saves a little girl whose mother perished. While consoling her, he angrily watches Zod and Superman fly down from the sky.

18 months later, Lois Lane travels to war-torn Nairobi in Kenya, seeking an interview with the African warlord in a raging civil war. Lois was accompanied by Jimmy Olsen, a photographer who is revealed to be a CIAoperative. The camera he was carrying had a tracking device hidden inside as discovered by a bodyguard, Anatoli Knyazev. Before being shot, he states that Lois knew nothing of either the device or his identity. The warlord then takes Lois as a hostage, threatening to kill her. Superman soon arrives, saving Lois and returning her home.

A US Senate committee headed by Senator Finch hears evidence given about Superman saving the life of Lois Lane in Africa. Concerned at how Superman may be seen by the public, due to his constant acts of vigilantism, she sends a public announcement to Superman, inviting him to speak in a committee to defend his actions at the US Capitol in Washington D.C.

Lois recovered a bullet from the warlord's camp, and after researching, ascertains that it is not made by any known manufacturer. She proceeds to query this with General Calvin Swanwick. Reluctantly, he gives in to her requests to identify the bullet's manufacturer. He reveals that they are a special prototype round, made by LexCorp Industries. Senator Finch speaks with Lex Luthor, informing him that she is blocking an import warrant for him to bring a portion of Kryptonite found in the Indian Ocean into the United States. Luthor, warns her of the consequences and she then leaves his mansion.

While the rest of the world is busy debating whether Superman has been a positive or negative addition to planet Earth, Clark returns home to Smallville to visit Martha. There, she advises him that either way, he shouldn't be concerned with what others think of him.

Despite media speculation to the contrary, Superman arrives to speak and answer at Finch's committee. She points out to him a victim of Superman's actions, Wallace Keefe, who lost his legs in Superman's battle withGeneral Zod. After seeing a distasteful note left for her by Lex Luthor, she stops in mid-speech before a bomb (hidden inside Keefe's wheelchair by Lex Luthor) explodes, killing her and everyone else present, except Superman. Later that night, Lex discovers that Batman has stolen his kryptonite from LexCorp in Metropolis, leaving behind a batarang as a symbol. In Washington D.C., Superman meets Lois at her hotel suite and laments on his failures to stop the bombing and his role as Superman. Lois tries to convince him that he must remain a symbol of hope for the peoples of Earth before he flies away in exile. Using the fingerprints of Zod, Lex enters the Genesis Chamber of the Fortress of Solitude in Heroes Park and learns information on hundreds of thousands of recorded worlds.

Bruce Wayne begins physically training in the Batcave to prepare for his fight against Superman while also converting the kryptonite into three gas grenades and a kryptonite-tipped spear. While accessing Lex's data drive, he discovers folders on metahumans, one containing recent surveillance on Diana and a 1918 photograph of her as Wonder Woman in Belgium. Meanwhile, Lex brings the corpse of General Zod to the Genesis Chamber and Kelor warns him of the ban of genetic modification by the Kryptonian Law Council. However, Lex ignores this and combines his blood with Zod as the Genesis Chamber begins to transform the body of Zod.

Clark arrives at a snowy mountaintop and imagines his father, Jonathan Kent, building a tomb with stones. Kent recalls his childhood when he remembers one bad rainy season when he and his family spent all-night damming the water to save the farm. Kent remembers that his mother called him a hero and baked him a cake and, while he was eating, the neighbour's farm was wiped out and he could hear the neighbour's horses drowning. He continued that he used to have nightmares about the horses. Clark asks if the nightmares ever stopped, and Jonathan answers when he met Martha Kent, who gave him hope that there is good in the world. Bruce visits the ruins of the Wayne Manor as Alfred tries to dissuade him from combating Superman to no avail. Bruce recalls when his father sat him down next to the Wayne family shield and his father taught him of the first generation of the Wayne family that sold pelts and skins to French traders, citing that they were hunters.

In Smallville, Martha Kent is kidnapped by Anatoli Knyazev and his men and is brought to Metropolis. In Gotham, Batman prepares his weapons against Superman and shines the Bat Signal in the stormy sky, as Lex watches from the LexCorp tower from across the bay. Anatoli also kidnaps Lois Lane and delivers her to Lex, who then pushes her off the tower to lure Superman. Superman saves her and puts her down on the ground before flying up to confront Lex Luthor. He then shows Superman photographs of his kidnapped mother, and offers an ultimatum to him: if he does not kill Batman within 30 minutes, then Martha Kent will die by fire.

At Heroes Park, the Fortress of Solitude begins to emit electric discharges to the surrounding buildings. Elsewhere, Diana receives an email from Bruce, showing a photograph of her from 1918, questioning her identity and her origins. In the attachment, she uncovers surveillance footage of Barry Allen, Arthur Curry, and video diaries of Silas Stone using a Mother Box to resuscitate his son, Victor Stone. As Lois returns to the Daily Planet, she rides a helicopter straight for the Bat Signal in Gotham in hopes of stopping the fight.

In Gotham, Superman meets Batman in his Armored Batsuit and tries to explain the situation. However, Batman does not bother to listen as he activates sonar cannons and machine gun turrets against Superman to no visible effect. Superman and Batman then begin to fight, with Batman firing two kryptonite gas grenades at him during the fight and gaining the upper hand. Finally, Batman grabs the weakened Superman and drags him over to his kryptonite spear. However, as Batman is about to kill Superman, Superman mutters that they are going to kill Martha. Taken aback, Lois arrives and explains that Martha is his mother's name. Shocked, Batman comes to his senses, realizing that Superman is no threat to humanity. Superman and Lois explain the situation to Batman, and he promises to rescue Martha Kent while Superman investigates the electric discharges coming from the Fortress of Solitude and confronts Lex. Lois grabs the kryptonite spear and throws it into a pool of water nearby to dispose of it.

Alfred tracks Knyazev's phone to a warehouse in Metropolis, and Batman flies there via the Batwing. He infilitrates the warehouse, neutralizes all the criminals, kills Anatoli Knyazev and successfully rescues Martha. Meanwhile, Superman finds Lex Luthor at the Genesis Chamber and upon learning Superman has not killed Batman, calls Anatoli. He is surprised when Batman is on the other line instead and realizes Martha is safe. Lex then executes his backup plan: unleashing an ancient Kryptonian deformity known as Doomsday. As the monster awakens, it roars at Lex Luthor before reaching out to kill him. However, Superman stops his attack and Doomsday breaks out of the Fortress of Solitude into Heroes Park while Lex stays behind.

Superman promptly confronts Doomsday, and the two battle one another, destroying the Superman Statue in the process. Doomsday's strength surpasses that of Superman, but the the Man of Steel holds his own, managing to send the monster flying into a building. Doomsday is then shot at by military helicopters, but his body takes it all, adapting and only becoming more durable.

In desperation, Superman tackles Doomsday into space. The US President intends to shoot the alien monster down with a nuclear missile, and it is carried out, despite the protests of Swanwick. Superman defiantly holds Doomsday in place as he sees the missile approach, determined to have the monster destroyed. The resulting explosion is so gigantic, that Batman can clearly see it from Earth's surface.

Doomsday's body lands on the abandoned Stryker's Island, but he is far from dead, as the tremendous explosion seems to have only made the monster stronger, with its body once again regenerating. Batman then attacks it with his Batwing, unleashing an immense amount of firepower, but Doomsday is unscathed, and brings the plane down with his heat vision and breath. Before Batman can escape his crashed vehicle, Doomsday corners him, and fires a tremendous superheated torrent at him. Wonder Woman arrives, however, just in time to save Batman, deflecting the beams with her indestructible bracelets, which creates a massive wave of energy outwards.

In the meantime, Superman is floating in space, with him being extremely weakened by the nuclear missile, rendered thin and undead in appearance. Soon, however, he is exposed to radiation from the yellow sun, which reinvigorates Superman's cells, returning him to full power. He then proceeds to defiantly fly towards Doomsday again, sending the monster flying into a gas tank.

Wonder Woman and Superman then proceed to jointly attack Doomsday in tandem, while Batman tries to expose the monster to Kryptonite, which would exploit its only known vulnerability. Wonder Woman soon manages to cut off the monster's right hand, but that only results in a sharp bony protrusion growing back in its place.

In the meantime, Lois is in Gotham, unsuccessfully trying to retrieve the Kryptonite Spear from underwater. Superman is able to hear her drowning, and flies off to rescue her from drowning, helping her retrieve the spear in the process, while Wonder Woman has manages to temporarily restrain Doomsday with her indestructible lasso. Superman sees that the only way to stop Doomsday is to risk his own life. Hence, he says a tender goodbye to Lois with a kiss, before taking hold of the spear and flying back to the battle scene, exposed to the substance himself in the process.

He stabs Doomsday in the chest with the Kryptonite Spear, but since the weapon did not manage to fully pierce the monster, Doomsday is able to stab Superman in return, piercing the latter's chest with his arm bone protrusion. A desperate and mortally wounded Superman uses the leverage to further impale Doomsday with the spear, finally killing the creature, though dying himself in the process. A shocked and saddened Batman promptly arrives, and retrieves Superman's lifeless body, enveloping him in his own cape, shortly before the arrival of a devastated Lois.

Superman is given a symbolic funeral with an empty casket in Heroes Park in Metropolis, while the funeral of Clark Kent is held in Smallville, with Father Daniel Leone presiding over it, and with Pete Ross and Lana Lang also being in attendance. An after function is held at Martha's home. Lois is in Clark's bedroom when Martha enters. She gives Lois a letter, revealing to her that Clark had intended to propose to her.

Still at the cemetery, Bruce and Diana share a conversation about bringing the other metahumans together, in case a threat of that scale ever should arise, honoring Superman's heroic sacrifice. Diana questions the necessity and inquires why Bruce is proposing it. He replies that it is simply due to a feeling he has that things will inevitably get worse.

Clark's coffin is then shown, with the handful of dirt (scattered on it by Lois) beginning to rise into the air, implying that Superman might still be alive.

The Verdict:

Here we go again...

I’m not going to rehash what I said about this film the first go-round as you can go revisit my review on the theatrical release here. Instead, I'm going to merely comment and analyze the additional content in this version of the film and how it weighs in to what we were given in the original theatrical release. Instead of retreading familiar territory, I’m just going to comment on the changes in this version since a friend kindly asked if I could review this DVD/Blu-Ray release with additional content.

To be honest, my opinion on the film doesn’t change at all. If anything the additional content makes the film come off even more convoluted than the original theatrical release did.

First of all, the film’s additional content starts off with “Jimmy Olsen” or the CIA agent who was undercover with Lois Lane at the start of the film being identified under the codename of “Talon” by his fellow operatives. Savvy DC Comics fans will be quick to point out that Talon was a member of the Court of Owls from the popular Batman storyline of the same name. If I’m honest, I don’t think Zack Snyder is that smart to tease that this early in this film for a future appearance in a solo Batman film. Instead, I think he’s just name dropping and teasing concepts just to make it appear that he’s “smart” and “edgy”. It’s the exact same opinion I have on the dream Batman/Bruce Wayne has later on where it’s almost spot on Insurgency versus the Regime from Injustice: Gods Among Us with Evil Superman.

I know what you're thinking... Zack Snyder put in a throwaway Court of Owls reference in this film? I guess that's why Gotham (TV series) is rushing to introduce this concept into their show before it's off limits when the Extended Universe gets around to it. It was bad enough that Snyder made Jimmy Olsen a throwaway character as a sick joke in this film, but a bigger slap to the face for Batman fans, especially given how of an impact that the Court of Owls have in Batman's mythology nowadays. It just adds more onto the pile of content in this movie that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have blown their loads on.

Even though I watched Man of Steel again this past holiday weekend, I honestly don’t remember Major Ferris being referenced in the US military. Yes, the same Ferris or rather Carol Ferris (credited as "Carrie" Ferris in the credits here) who eventually becomes on-again, off-again Green Lantern villain Star Sapphire – depending on the continuity.

There was a little more interaction between Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince before the film’s finale in this version but it still doesn’t justify nor warrant Wonder Woman’s borderline irrelevant role in this film. She’s still just here looking for a PHOTO – that’s it. Maybe I don't remember it in the theatrical release, but I don't remember Bruce and Diana having a lot of interaction before the ending of the film outside of their meeting in the museum. It still doesn't do much for the development of Diana's character, nor justify her being in this movie only just to "look cool" alongside Superman and Batman in the film's finale.

Even though I got ahead of myself a little, I want to mention Bruce Wayne’s other “dream” or rather a premonition. The Flash comes from the future with a warning for Bruce, but in this cut of the film, there’s more dialogue to help explain this. I don’t understand  why that was cut out of the theatrical release as it actually made more sense of this scene.

The Flash: “Am I too soon??? You have to find us, Bruce!! You were always right about him! Lois is the key!!”

This could be the one omission from the theatrical release that might cause DC/WB to kick themselves in the long haul as it honestly serves as a bit of great foreshadowing. The Flash mentioning that he that he came too soon (busts out laughing as I typed that…) is something that could be explored in the Justice League follow-up film as the League wants to warn themselves in the past of the pending threat on the horizon – in which would be more likely a revived “evil” Superman under the control of Steppenwolf or Darkseid’s forces. I was shocked that they threw out this ONE bit of vital dialogue. It seems like they are foreshadowing to sending The Flash back in time to warm Bruce of the pending doom of Evil Superman in the veins of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Alternatively, they could be teasing Flashpoint here and that could be another reason why The Flash TV series on The CW is rushing to get that out of the way now before it's off-limits.

Clark actually does reporter work in this cut. He actually goes to Gotham and does his own research on the Bat Brand and what it means to criminals who are marked. Luthor's henchmen set up Batman to take the fall by murdering one of the criminals who had been marked recently to play up the "mark of death" rumor befalling Batman's reputation. This was rather clever I have to admit. Luthor framed both heroes to make them antagonize each other by devaluing their own morals in the eye of the other. Batman's brand of justice - literally - is a mark of a murderer in more ways than one, while Superman's power is too much for one man to command without restraint.

That being said though... Batman still comes across as a complete moron. All of Luthor's plotting is going on in his own city as well as Metropolis and he's pretty much oblivious to it along with his own employee becoming one of Luthor's pawns. With Batman actually killing people in this film even adds more fuel to the fire to add to the mistrust Superman has to the Batman character, so Bruce's own actions add to his own stupidity. In both cuts of this film, he thinks of no other option outside of killing Superman.

The African woman in opening testimonial confesses to Senator that she was bribed by Lex Luthor to frame Superman but silenced by hitman before the truth gets out. This adds to Luthor's masterful manipulation of framing both Batman and Superman in a less favorable light to the mass media and public eye.

Lois figures out that Lex has framed Superman on her own, thanks to some help from Jenet Klyburn of S.T.A.R. Labs, portrayed by Jena Malone. Jenet deduces that the foreign metal bullet in Lois' bag and the wheelchair bomb were made of the same mineral. They were lined with lead so Superman couldn't see it. This brings up another whopper of a question... How the HELL does Lex Luthor know this when the extent of Superman's powers and more importantly, his weaknesses were haven't been explored in this continuity yet!!?? If Lex Luthor was this damn smart, he shouldn't have needed Batman and Superman to kill each other. Instead, he could have beaten them himself after doing this much manipulating behind the scenes along with knowing their secret identities.

In this cut of the film, Superman actually saves the survivors after the explosion at the courthouse. This was what this film needed. More examples of Superman doing good things with his powers. The single montage in the theatrical cut wasn't good enough and it was in very bad taste to have Superman just leave after the courthouse blew up without doing a damn thing about it. At least in this cut, he stuck around to assist with getting the survivors in the explosion medical attention. This scene alone makes Batman look even stupider as he immediately jumps to the conclusion to kill Superman after he took the time to save the survivors.

Here's another question I have... Why didn't the Kryptonian ship defenses attack Lex like it did Lois in Man of Steel? That's one lingering plot hole that's so big that you could drive ten of the Yaegers from Pacific Rim through it all at once.

Quis Custodiet ipsos custodes - "Who will watch the watchmen? | Who guards the guardians?"

This is written on the wall of the church where Batman fights Superman and can be seen on several billboards throughout the film. It's common knowledge that director Zack Snyder worked on the Watchmen film but the Justice League have had similarities to that story for years now. It was a nice touch to echo that story's message here, especially during the clash between Superman and Batman.

Watch It or Don't Bother?

For those who haven't seen the theatrical cut, I say watch this one instead of the original version as this makes a little more sense than the final product. As for everyone else, I wouldn't bother as you can look up the few changes on YouTube by now and I wouldn't suggest anyone torture themselves for 3+ hours just to watch this in its entirety again if you didn't like it the first go-round.

WWE Network Exclusive: Cruiserweight Classic Finals Live Special (September 14, 2016) -- Results & Afterthoughts

The Cruiserweight Classic, formerly the Global Cruiserweight Series, was a professional wrestling WWE Network series and tournament produced by WWE with all participants billed at a weight of 205 lbs. or less. Tournament qualifying matches took place in various promotions of the independent circuit, including well known promotions such as Revolution Pro Wrestling, Progress Wrestling, and Evolve. Many cruiserweight wrestlers from around the world were given the chance to qualify for the 32-man tournament, which took place over four dates: June 23, July 13, August 26, and September 14, 2016.
Look, I know I haven't written a lot about the CWC tournament nor live tweeted it much as I honestly refuse to watch it live out of loving to have something to watch at my own leisure when the bulk of the people I know don't watch nor like this style of wrestling - even more so that they are unfamiliar with a great deal of these "high-profile" free agents in this tournament. I've have enjoyed this tournament a LOT. The opening round struggled with the feeling of meaningless exhibitions until they got around to the "serious" bouts in the second round with more drama and intensity, along with a lot of dream match-ups and nail-biters in this tournament.

Gran Metalik def. Zack Sabre Jr.

This was a great fast-paced match to get everyone fired up for the finals of this tournament. Watching this match reminds me of NWA-TNA era X-Division matches and even the old WCW Nitro opening cruiserweight matches that amped up the crowds for the rest of the show with a high-flying, exciting match with tons of crazy spots and pure athleticism. As much as I want to like what I've seen from ZSJ in this tournament, I have to knock this guy for his lack of selling at times in this match. Either he was selling the wrong leg or not selling enough before hopping up for the next big spot. It's not like they were stretched for time here, so he had time to slow it down and maintain the excitement.

TJ Perkins def. Kota Ibushi

I think this was the upset of the evening right here as you could definitely sense a pattern now in terms of guys who weren't willing to sell their souls to the E machine by signing a contract. ZSJ openly said he wasn't signing and Ibushi said the same when he returned back to Japan a few months ago between tapings for this tournament. Besides that, as great as this match was, you had to know that TJP was going over from how much Daniel Bryan and Mauro Ranallo were talking about him being homeless and being an underdog. They were building up for a big win here after all of that. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kota Ibushi show up in NXT in another year or two. Could anyone confirm if that was his wife/girlfriend on the front row during this match?

DIY (Ciampa and Gargano) def. Cedric Alexander and Noram Dar

I'll never get tired of seeing Gargano's Slingshot Spear spot.

If you were impressed with Ciampa and Gargano's tag team chemistry on NXT then you know what to expect here. Those guys are the unsung heroes of this tournament from their bromance in the last match of the opening round of this tournament that people are still talking about and probably will for a very long time in terms of telling a narrative in a tournament that had little to no storytelling going for it outside of some great matches up to that point.

Cedric Alexander and Dar didn't look like pushovers but I can't help but shake the feeling that the bulk of the NXT roster are looking at these guys coming in and taking spots on both the main roster and live events' cards without having to jump through hoops and hurdles like the rest of the folks down in developmental.

I still feel like it's a sin for Cedric Alexander to make his entrance to the ring without his bad ass ROH theme.

Triple H made his presence known as the beloved step-dad of the IWC as he gave the smarks what they wanted most out of this tournament - the revival of the Cruiserweight Championship. At least that belt looks a THOUSAND times better than the most of the new belts brought into the fold since the start of this new draft...

TJ Perkins def. Gran Metalik to win the CWC and become the first NEW Cruiserweight Champion

TJP and Metalik's styles compliment each other so much. I could watch them wrestle each other forever.

If you were playing a drinking game to how many times Ranallo and Bryan were bringing up TJP being homeless, you would have died of liver poisoning by now. After translating that one post-match victory promo by Metalik, it was like Vince saw that and said fuck that guy in the production truck. All of the hype on this match was on TJP to take it, no matter how well Metalik worked on this show or throughout this tournament as a whole. That being said, BOTH TNA as well as Ring of Honor had their chances to make TJP into a household name. Now it's WWE's chance to make him into a big star. He's already off to a great start and the sky's the limit from here.

First ever Cruiserweight Champion of the "modern" era, TJP. Sink it in, kid. This is your moment.

Spoken like a true champion, TJP. Hearing that interview live that night I couldn't help but applaud TJP after hearing his heart-felt words. Not just one guy deserves props for the success of this tournament on the WWE Network. All 32 guys that participated - whether they signed WWE contracts afterwards or not - deserve all the praise in the world for giving their all to make this event something special, not just for WWE fans but for ALL fans of professional wrestling.

Afterthoughts:

The CWC as a whole was a VERY risky gamble that paid off extremely well for WWE and their Network. It had a bumpy start with the opening round until the drama and storytelling were introduced, thanks to the heart-felt match between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano and continued to build throughout the following rounds, thanks to drama, passion, and most importantly - CHARACTER - in the ring expressed by Brian Kendrick, Cedric Alexander, and several other competitors. CWC quickly became my (along with many others) favorite hour of WWE programming for the past few weeks. From start to finish, I enjoyed what was offered here, especially with this finale.

By the way, the WWE Network already fixed that Sasha Banks/Jack Gallagher name tag botch
on the archive footage.
What I didn't like though was how WWE insists on doing this for live events. Why does Bayley and Sasha Banks (or the Four Horsewomen in general ) have to be ringside for particular matches to "validate" the match in question? Let the fans decide on their own that it's going to be special or not. I don't need to see them there to add their stamp of approval. I was fine with Bayley hanging out at SHIMMER tapings during WrestleMania weekend because it's WrestleMania weekend and all of the promotions pretty much "endorse" each other during that time of the year so it's cool to see other wrestlers at events they aren't employed at.

As for the "arrival" of the Cruiserweights on Monday Night RAW on September 19, 2016, I wasn't impressed nor underwhelmed by what WWE did with them there. The crowd wasn't initially too crazy about the four guys (The Brian Kendrick, Cedric Alexander, Rich Swann, and Gran Metalik) they choose to go with here, but warmed up to them by the end of it. I don't have a problem with Kendrick picking up the win but ultimately that makes me care less about TJP's first title defense. Kendrick is a "safe" bet to carry TJP through a WWE-style PPV bout. It's painfully obvious that they aren't going to give Kendrick the belt right off the bat like this, so it's not going to hurt TJP's momentum/street cred coming off as the winner of the CWC and being the first Superstar to hold the new Cruiserweight title. I thought it was in bad taste NOT to introduce the champion of this new division on the go-home edition of RAW before the PPV when TJP is going to defend said title, but whatever. That alone tells me that TJP isn't going to lose the title in his first defense when they didn't even bother to introduce him.

That being said, I'm skeptical that WWE can continue to carry the strong momentum for the cruiserweights that the CWC established as I'm sure there's a lot of people on the main roster and in developmental who are pissed these guys are getting their spots that they've been busting their asses for. At the same time, I can't imagine the cruiserweights upstaging the main eventers and if it does happen you can bet that the cruiserweights will find themselves confined in an even smaller glass ceiling than the cruiserweights in WCW found themselves in roughly twenty years ago. I hope I'm wrong but only time will tell if history proves to repeat itself in WWE.

WWE Backlash (September 9, 2016) - First SmackDown Exclusive PPV -- Results & Afterthoughts

Backlash (2016) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event produced by WWE. It took place on September 11, 2016 at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. It was the twelfth event in the Backlash chronology and the first SmackDown branded event following the second brand split in July 2016.

Eight matches were contested at the event, including one match contested on the pre-show. In the main event, AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose to win the WWE World Championship. The event also determined the inaugural champions in SmackDown's Women's and Tag Team divisions, which were respectively won by Becky Lynch and the team of Heath Slater and Rhyno.

Becky Lynch wins the 6-Pack Challenge and becomes the first ever SmackDown Women's Champion

This match had a VERY sloppy start, but it came together by the end. Even though Becky won at the end, the unsung star of this match was Naomi from all of her amazing (no pun intended) spots in this match. Natalya definitely no slouch either but she played the part of ring general in controlling the pacing and keeping this match organized for the most part. Carmella and Nikki Bella put more eyes on their personal feud but not at the cost of the title as Nikki was eliminated in an upset by Carmella, who ended up being the final obstacle in the way of the fan-favorite Becky Lynch. I'm just glad to see Becky finally pick up a championship win after being robbed of that opportunity when she was at the peak of her popularity when she was still in NXT. Instead, NXT went with milking Bayley until that well ran dry...

Holy fuck though... the more I see of Carmella's ring work, the more I wish they kept her on NXT to get some polish. She still comes off really green to me. At least Alexa is a much better worker than her.

The Usos def. The Hype Bros to advance to the last round of the SmackDown Tag Team Tournament

It was a little odd to see the Usos not in their traditional gear and looking like they dressed out of Roman Reigns' closet, but I can understand the change in styles if they are going with this heel turn with the utmost confidence. I'm a little surprised that Mojo Rawley doesn't adopt a few of Monty Brown/Marcus Cor Von's moveset to say that they came from similar backgrounds. Besides, it's not like that guy is coming back to the world of wrestling anytime soon - if ever. After seeing the Usos fly around so much for the last few years, I'm glad to see them work a slower more methodical style. Those guys have been injured left and right over the last two years so they deserve to work smarter now.

The Miz (c) w/ Maryse def. Dolph Ziggler to retain the Intercontinental Championship

I honestly didn't give a flying fuck about this match for the most part, save for Maryse looking hot as ever at ringside, but they won me over by the end of it. The crowd was so quiet at one point that you could hear Dolph shouting spots to Miz throughout the match. I didn't have a problem with Miz retaining after Maryse blinded Ziggler with the hairspray, but I have to wonder what do they have planned for Ziggler long-term when they keep handing him loss after loss. The New Era has done absolutely NOTHING to repair the damage that the last few years have done to Ziggler's image.

Bray Wyatt def. Randy Orton via count out since Orton no shows...
BUT Kane def. Bray Wyatt in an impromptu No Holds Barred Match

Outside of the Running Senton spot that Bray did to put Kane through the commentary table, there wasn't much to talk about here. Bray had this in the bag until Orton limped out and hit him with the RKO to allow Kane to pick up the win. I would've had Bray kick out to shock Orton but still have Kane put him away with a Tombstone Piledriver (a la The Undertaker) to pick up the win. Not just that he's laid out already by one move he's already kicked out of previously in this match and a move that's already diluted by an "injured" Orton. That just makes Bray look weak in my honest opinion. We should be salvaging Bray's image here not damaging it further.

Heath Slater & Rhyno def. The Usos to become the first ever SmackDown Tag Team Champions

Much like the previous tag team bout on this card, there wasn't much to write home about other than the Usos' new offensive approach but I was under the impression that Rhyno was going to turn on Slater at the last moment. I'm glad that I was wrong there. Rhyno ends up doing the work to lay out the Usos for Slater could pick up the win but much like the Bray Wyatt match, I would be repairing the Usos' image. They should have been derailed by American Alpha screwing them out of the win, allowing Slater and Rhyno to pick up the win instead. That way you got new champions and a solid tag team feud right off the boot. Instead, it comes off with the Usos looking weak coming off their heel turn after they dominated several teams in this tournament and sidelined Alpha for nothing.

AJ Styles def. Dean Ambrose (c) to become the NEW WWE World Champion

This was a solid main event, which was reminiscent of the Attitude Era and NWA-TNA era main events from both WWF and TNA/Impact Wrestling. That couldn't be more ironic though with Styles walking away with the title. Let's be serious here and admit to ourselves that Ambrose didn't bring anything new nor add any depth nor substance to his gimmick/character nor to the SmackDown brand as champion. As champion, he is supposed to be carrying the show and it was more like the show was carrying him. I'm MORE than happy with this title change. Love or hate Roman Reigns but at least people were behind him one way or another in terms of drawing a crowd. Ambrose was just showing up for a paycheck.

Afterthoughts

After SmackDown Live this week, we have two major matches already set in stone for the next PPV event, No Mercy, in which AJ Styles will defend the WWE Championship versus Dean Ambrose and the returning John Cena and SmackDown Women's Champion Becky Lynch will defend her title against Alexa "Harley Quinn Cosplay" Bliss. I'm puzzled why Cena is acting like he's going to get title win number 16 at a non-Big Four WWE PPV. On top of that, he's set to take more time off until early 2017, so SmackDown must be really in rough shape if they called him off the bench already. No offense to Bliss, but they are grooming her for failure in that match against Becky in an easy title defense.

That being said, this wasn't a bad show - it just lacked star power. The absence of John Cena and the omission of Randy Orton stuck out like a sore thumb to show the entire WWE Universe how lacking the SmackDown roster is compared to the RAW brand. The SD roster worked their asses off on a show that was literally a 2.5 hour episode of SmackDown Live, but at the end of the day, I'm sure more people felt ripped off with this event than satisfied with it, despite the results of the three marquee title matches. This show reminds me of Impact Wrestling on a bigger scale, where the talent is busting their asses to get noticed but at the end of the day, most casual fans won't give a damn because it's not their top favorite wrestlers aren't on the card and as a result, they don't give a damn because they didn't pay to see this.

I really liked a lot of the matches on this show, but I couldn't help wanting more afterwards, especially when the show ended 10:40PMish instead of closer to 11PM.

REVIEW -- One Punch Man (anime)

One-Punch Man is a Japanese anime series based on the webcomic created by One and its subsequent manga adaptation illustrated by Yusuke Murata. Set in a world where monsters run rampant, the story focuses on Saitama, a superhero who has grown bored as he has become so powerful that all of his battles end in a single punch. The series was directed by Shingo Natsume at Madhouse and was written by Tomohiro Suzuki. The series also features character design by Chikashi Kubota, who also served as chief animation director, and music by Makoto Miyazaki.

Plot:

On an alternate unnamed world in the metropolis of Z-City, strange monsters have been mysteriously appearing and causing disasters resulting in the world's superheroes rising to combat them. Saitama, the protagonist of the series, is the strongest hero who easily defeats the monsters or other villains with a single punch. However, due to his immeasurable strength, Saitama has become bored with his power and is constantly trying to find stronger opponents who can present a challenge to him.

Beautifully drawn artwork and stylish action, bust-a-gut tier comedy, and tons of parodies of the action
anime genre. What's there NOT to love about this show?
As Saitama is active as a hero, he meets various other heroes and villains. He gets a disciple in the form of the cyborg Genos and consequently joins the Hero Association in order to gain official recognition. Despite defeating many strong monsters that even the Heroes Association’s top members are unable to defeat, Saitama struggles to gain respect. Most people look down on him due to his plain physical appearance and some accuse him of being a counterfeit hero. Only a small number of individuals in the series recognize his talent and humility towards others.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. That intro is too awesome...

The Verdict:

Once the news broke out that Toonami was adding this anime to their weekend anime block, I figured I better get on the ball and review this series before it finishes up it's first run on Cartoon Network.

One of the most random shots during Deep Sea King arc... but one of the few
times they actually show civilians before the bad guys show up.
It’s only 13 episodes, but this first season(?) makes it worth your time for a tight concise story.
At first glance, One Punch Man seems like your traditional Shonen Jump anime with the hero who fights against evil in some bizarre quest to become stronger. Saitama is a hero, but he has a different problem that sets him apart from other Shonen heroes. Saitama is so powerful that he can defeat any adversary that he encounters with literally ONE punch – hence the name, One Punch Man. Most of the anime is about Saitama’s ongoing struggles to find an adversary to truly test the limits of his power but even during the two part finale, Saitama reveals that he hasn’t even scratched the surface of his full potential, wondering if he’s cursed to be never truly “challenged” in battle. This is a complete 180 to the dynamic found in action-heavy anime modeled after Dragonball Z’s success. Goku and Vegeta are always striving to become stronger while Saitama is sitting at the top of the plateau without any equal, looking down over the ridge.

All of that just to kill a single mosquito.
The biggest take away from this anime is Saitama’s worth as a hero. It’s not fully explored until Saitama takes in the cyborg , Genos, as his “student” and Genos encourages them both to join the Hero Organization that works for the government. Genos is propelled to the top ranks with ease while the officials and several of their fellow heroes can’t take Saitama seriously. They look at his successes as mere flukes and see him as stealing the glory from more recognizable heroes. Saitama is the type to brag about his exploits but by the end of the series, he began to make more of his fellow heroes believers in his abilities. Genos even begins to wonder if Saitama’s powers have limits – if at all. The way how Saitama’s strength of character, especially his selfless behavior of tarnishing his own heroic image at the cost of saving lives, is the beauty of how the narrative of this anime stands out.

My biggest issue with the anime was that all of those cool, interesting characters that you see in the kick-ass introduction of this anime don’t show up until roughly two thirds of the way into this anime. It’s a damn shame too as all of those characters bring something different to the table and add to craziness that makes this anime stand out. Then again, the anime’s creators did their best with this for what they were given, cramming so much content from the One Punch Man manga into this 13 episode season. It was confirmed earlier this year that the anime would be getting another season, but with no air date when it would go into production nor when will it be available.

In the meantime, I guess I'll pick up reading the One Punch Man manga to fill in the gaps.

Watch it or Don’t Bother?

Saitama's "secret" training regime

Definitely watch this. If you’re fan of action anime or over the top craziness, this is definitely for you. There are moments where I absolutely laughed my ass off at this anime and other moments where I was fully invested into the action. It’s the same dynamic that kept fans emotionally hooked to Dragonball Z and many other Shonen Jump-style anime (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc.).

There's still no timetable on when the next season is going to drop, but for what it's worth, this is a nice concise story for those looking for a shorter anime to fill in the time before the Fall television season kicks off in full swing.

OPINION -- Impact Wrestling - DELETE or DECAY

"DECAY!!! I KNEW you'd come..."

On Impact Wrestling's September 8, 2016 episode on Pop TV, they aired the highly-anticipated follow-up to the "Final Deletion" between Matt and Jeff Hardy between the Hardy family and the Decay.

This one took a massive shit on what WWE attempted to do with the New Day "invading" the Wyatt Family's compound and took the craziness from the Final Deletion to new heights - if that was even possible after what they pulled off in the Final Deletion.

From a cinematic perspective, I absolutely love this blending of styles with how they shot this one. I'm almost at the point of wanting to see a full-blown film starring Broken Matt Hardy after how outrageous and bizarre these segments have been.

There were moments in this segment where I thought it would have been better if they aired it closer to Halloween, but given the success of shows like Stranger Things on Netflix, I can see why they went ahead and put it out there now. That moment where Rosemary was walking down the road alone was straight out of a horror movie, but I'm still laughing to myself about the Decay leaving that guy who hit on her laying in the middle of the road with his pants down. What did the Decay do to him, let Rosemary give him a "happy ending"? Even worse if Abyss and Crazzy Steve did it... (Shudders)

I marked so hard for Joseph Park's cameo in this segment, along with Vanguard-1 (V-1, get it?) shooting fireworks at the fleeing Abyss and Steve until it created a Daredevil/The Crow-style pattern burned onto the Hardy's lawn. That joke about the "spot monkeys" in Matt's personal zoo, along with the "Bucks of Youth" should be trending for years to come. Excellent shout out to the Young Bucks and the boys in the X-Division.

I was little bummed out that we didn't get to actually see Reby and Rosemary get physical, but I guess TNA are going to save that for Bound for Glory next month when the Tag Titles are finally on the line. They still have about 2-3 more weeks to build up for the PPV, so there's that. For those who don't know, Matt Hardy's wife is a trained wrestler. I don't know what's her condition after having a baby but I guess she would need some time getting the ring rust off before a big match at BFG in the event that she does decide to get physical.

I'm anxious to see where they go with Jeff Hardy's "sacrifice" at the hands of Abyss and "Janice" to save his brother Matt and what the Decay will do with the kidnapped Senor Benjamin. As long as they don't leave him in the road with his pants down like that other guy, I'm sure it will be entertaining nonetheless.

REVIEW -- Voltron: Legendary Defender (Netflix) - Season 1: Episodes 1-13

Voltron: Legendary Defender is an American animated television series produced by DreamWorks Animation Television and World Events Productions and animated by Studio Mir. It is a reboot of the 1984 Voltron series, and its animation is a mix of anime influence for characters and background and CGI for Voltron action sequences. The series premiered on Netflix on June 10, 2016 and consisted of 13 episodes.

Summary:

For millennia, the evil Galra Empire has plagued the universe by conquering planets and destroying their inhabitants. The only known threat to the empire's power and plans, is the legendary "Defender of the Universe" Voltron, a 100 meter tall robot warrior composed of five lion mechas whose whereabouts are presumed to be unknown. In truth, Voltron was separated by King Alfor of Altea in order to protect the Defender from falling into the Galran Emperor Zarkon's possession. At the crux of the war that ended with the destruction of planet Altea, King Alfor bonded the five lion's energies to his daughter Allura's life force, and then sent them across the universe to different locations until the time for the next generation of Paladins to appear and pilot Voltron arrived. Princess Allura, her retainer Coran, and the Altean Castle were hidden on planet Arus along with the Black Lion. In the present, the Galra Empire's path of conquest and search for Voltron has led them to Earth's solar system. A group of space pilots-Shiro, Keith, Lance, Pidge, and Hunk-discover the Blue Lion and immediately get swept up into the Galran War. They meet Princess Allura, become the next Paladins, and reunite the five lions to form Voltron and combat Emperor Zarkon's nefarious schemes and ultimately defeat the entire Galra Empire.

Totally digging the new designs, even though I had to get used to Coran and Allura's new looks.

Voice Acting Cast:

Steven Yeun as Keith
Jeremy Shada as Lance
Bex Taylor-Klaus as Pidge Gunderson/Katie Holt
Josh Keaton as Takashi "Shiro" Shirogane
Tyler Labine as Hunk
Kimberly Brooks as Princess Allura
Rhys Darby as Coran
Keith Ferguson as King Alfor
Neil Kaplan as Emperor Zarkon
Cree Summer as Witch Haggar
Jake Eberle as Commander Sendak

Episode Summaries: (FULL Spoilers)

One small thing I love about the updated Lion designs is the fact that it makes perfect sense to make Black Lion bigger than
the other four Lions since the others connect to that one. You can also notice that Green and Red Lions are the smallest
since they are Voltron's arms while Blue and Yellow Lions are the second largest since they are the legs. It used to drive me
crazy that they were ALL the same size in the original 1984 cartoon.

1–3 "The Rise of Voltron"

During a mission to Kerberos, one of Pluto's moons, an expedition team is attacked and imprisoned by a hostile alien craft from the Galra Empire while Galaxy Garrison - Earth's primary institution for space exploration- has presumed them dead. One year later on Earth, three Garrison cadets Lance, Pidge and Hunk witness a vessel crash land and learn that it contains one of the missing team members, Shiro, who is been quarantined after escaping from the Galra. As they form a rescue plan, Keith - a talented, but reckless academy washout- arrives and rescues Shiro before them and the five escape into the desert. Shiro is unable to remember anything from his captivity, but the group are able to determine that the Galra are searching for a weapon known as "Voltron". They find a large robotic blue lion in the desert and learn that it is only one of five lions that form Voltron. The Blue Lion accepts Lance as its pilot and takes the five through a wormhole to the Castle of Lions on Arus, where they find Princess Allura, her royal advisor Coran and four space mice in cryostasis. Upon awakening, Allura is shocked to discover that 10,000 years have passed since they were placed in cryostasis. Haggar, advisor of Zarkon, leader of the Galra Empire, sense Allura's return and Zarkon sends Galra troops commanded by Sendak after them. Allura names the others as Voltron Paladins, bestows them with armor and bayards (the Paladins' weapons) and tasks them with finding the other lions. Lance and Hunk retrieve the Yellow Lion while Shiro accompanies Pidge to find the Green Lion. The Red Lion, unfortunately, is in the hands of the very Galra ship advancing on Arus. Unsure of whether to run or fight, Allura consults the artificial intelligence formed by the memories of her father, King Alfor, who admits he was wrong to hide Voltron and encourages her to fight. Keith, Shiro and Pidge infiltrate the ship so Keith can find the Red Lion while Shiro and Pidge, who repurposes a Galra drone dubbed "Rover", search the ship for prisoners, revealing to Shiro that his father and brother were the other missing astronauts from the Kerberos mission Shiro was on. With all four lions retrieved, the Black Lion is released from the Castle and selects Shiro as its Paladin. All five lions unite to form Voltron and destroy Sendak's ship before accepting their new roles as the Defenders of the Universe.

4 "Some Assembly Required"

When the Paladins are unable to form Voltron during a training session, Coran puts them through his own rigorous training in order to build a sense of brotherhood and trust between the Paladins. However, the Paladins fail miserably and are unable to connect. It is not until the Paladins engage in a food fight with Allura and Coran that they finally begin to work as a team and are successfully able to form Voltron.

5 "Return of the Gladiator"

As the Castle of Lions continues to prepare for departure, the team is met by the arrival of a local Arusian investigating the castle. Allura heads to meet the villagers along with Coran, Hunk, Keith and Lance while Pidge and Shiro tend to the rescued prisoners from the Galra battleship. From them, they learn that Shiro was a champion fighter in the gladiator ring that he and Pidge's brother, Matt were forced to fight in and that Shiro seemingly attacked Matt in bloodlust. Pidge and Shiro head to the crashed Galra battleship they had destroyed to retrieve prisoner logs, but are interrupted by the arrival of a Robeast created by Haggar to defeat Voltron. During the fight, Shiro remembers the Robeast as the Galra warrior he defeated in battle and is able to use his previous tactics to defeat it. Keith uses his bayard to form the Blazing Sword, allowing Voltron to deliver the finishing blow. Afterwards, Shiro reveals to Pidge that he remembered attacking Matt so that he wouldn't be forced to fight and instead be sent to a work camp with his father. Pidge apologizes for doubting Shiro, who tells him that his family would be proud of him before calling Pidge "Katie" and promising to keep his secret. With the defeat of the Robeast, Zarkon tasks Sendak, still alive and on Arus, with acquiring Voltron.

6 "The Fall of the Castle of Lions"

The team and Arusians celebrate Voltron's victory in the castle, but the festivities come to a halt when Pidge reveals his intentions to leave the team and search for his missing father and brother. As the team tries to convince Pidge to stay, Haxus, one of Sendak's soldiers, is able to sneak a bomb drone into the castle, causing it to destroy the crystal that powers the entire castle and severely injure Lance in the process. Coran and Hunk leave to acquire a new crystal, Keith and Allura rush to the Arusian village as it is being attacked by the Galra while Shiro and Pidge remain at the castle with Lance. However, Sendak attacks and overpowers Shiro before plugging a Galran crystal into the castle, the attack on the Arusian village being a distraction. However, Pidge evades capture and with Allura's guidance is able to sabotage the Galra's efforts to launch the Castle. Meanwhile, Hunk and Coran arrive at a nearby Balmera, a large petrified creature the size of a planet from which the Alteans acquire crystals. However, they discover that it has been taken over by the Galra and crash in the subterranean mines.

7 "Tears of the Balmera"

Hunk and Coran meet local Balmerans, Shay and Rax, who help them hide from the Galra. Shay admires the two and wants to help them, but Rax is cautious and insists they leave. Hunk and Coran are able to sneak past the Galra to find a crystal, but are captured and imprisoned. Shay helps them escape with the crystal, but is captured by the Galra after her brother informs them of Shay's actions. Hunk promises to return and save her people before he and Coran return to Arus. Still trapped outside the castle, Keith and Allura are unable to help Pidge take back the Castle. With Allura's guidance, Pidge is able to continuously sabotage the Castle's systems to further delay Sendak's take off. In flashback, Katie Holt watches the news in horror as she learns of her father and brother's apparent demise on the mission to Kerberos. Katie breaks into the Galaxy Garrison and accesses Commander Iverson's files of the mission. When she is caught by Iverson, she presses him about the crash despite probes showing no evidence one but Iverson reprimands her and bans her from ever entering the Garrison again. Some time later, Katie enrolls in the Garrison, but cuts her hair and wears glasses, passing herself off as a male student named Pidge Gunderson. The space mice are able to take down the particle barrier, allowing Allura and Keith to enter the Castle and help Pidge against Sendak. With Lance in recovery and Sendak imprisoned, Pidge decides to remain on the team.

8 "Taking Flight"

On the way to the Balmera, the team stops to help two rebels, Rolo and Nyma, on the run from the Galra. While the others are open and trusting to the pair, Hunk is cautious and guarded and eager to get to Balmera as soon as possible. Lance flirts with Nyma, who convinces him to take her for a ride in the Blue Lion, but once they are alone, Nyma ties Lance to a tree while she and Rolo take off with his Blue Lion. The other Paladins pursue them into an asteroid field and Keith is able to flush them out and they reclaim the Blue Lion. Rolo and Nyma are left stranded once more, but Rolo expresses gratitude for the Paladins sparing their lives and genuinely hopes that they can defeat Zarkon.

9 "Return to the Balmera"

Allura, Coran and the Paladins return to the Balmera to free the natives, but must hold back their firepower so as not to hurt the Balmera. Shiro and Pidge scout for Galran forces, who are strangely absent, while Lance and Keith work to disable a Galran fleet of ships. Hunk searches for the prisons and is able to find Shay's family, including her brother Rax, but learns that she was taken by the Galra to the heart of the Balmera after they arrived. The Paladins make their way to the Balmera's core to rescue her, but fall into a trap. Shay uses the Balmera to transmit a message to her family, who are able to free them with the Balmera's help. The Paladins form Voltron and are able destroy the Galran fleet, but their victory is short-lived by the arrival of another Robeast.

10 "Rebirth"

The Paladins scramble to battle the new Robeast, who's omni-directional view and multi-firing ability make it difficult for Voltron to counter, forcing them to retreat to the tunnels below and regroup. However, they learn that the Balmera is dying and unless they leave, everything on the Balmera will die as well. Though the Balmerans are reluctant to leave their home, Allura convinces them to flee to safety. The Paladins distract the Robeast while the Balmerans climb to the surface to escape on the Castle-ship. However, the Balmera's waning life force causes structural damage to the tunnels, leaving many of the Balmerans trapped. Unable to fully evacuate, Allura decides to perform an ancient ritual once performed by her people to rejuvenate the Balmeran. Hunk's bayard forms a large shoulder cannon for Voltron, granting the Paladins equal fire power against the Robeast, but they are still unable to defeat it. With help from the Balmerans, Allura's ritual is able to revive the Balmera, which defeats the Robeast by encasing it in crystal.

11 "Crystal Venom"

As Allura recovers, she spends her time enjoying the company of her father's artificial intelligence. With Sendak in custody, they decide to draw out his memories in order to learn information about Zarkon and the Galra empire. While waiting, the Castle begins displaying strange behavior: Hunk and Pidge are attacked by malfunctioning kitchen equipment and later stuck in zero-G, Lance is locked in a cryo chamber and later almost sucked out of an air lock while Keith is attacked by a rogue training droid. Shiro monitors Sendak and begins interrogating him, but is mentally tormented by Sendak's voice prompting him to eject Sendak into space. Coran concludes that Alfor's AI has been corrupted by the lingering effects of the Galran crystal as they try to stop Allura, convinced that Alfor is taking her back to Altea, from driving the Castle-ship into an imploding star. At the urging of the real Alfor, Allura tearfully destroys her father's memories in order to save the ship. Despite the loss, Allura stands strong and maintains that Voltron is her father's legacy.

12 "Collection and Extraction"

While combing through Sendak's memories, the team discovers the location of a secret Galran transport hub. Allura joins the Paladins in infiltrating the station in order to extract information, but find nothing useful. When another ship arrives, Allura decides to infiltrate the ship herself to extract its information by making use of her Altean ability to change her skin color and height, allowing her to resemble a Galran soldier. Shiro accompanies her, unwilling to let her go alone as well as needing his hand to access Galran technology. While waiting, the Paladins spot one of the Druids with two large containers of yellow fluid. Keith pursues them and Coran discovers that the Galrans have found a new way to harvest Quintessence, a form of fuel that has also allowed Zarkon to live 10,000 years. Keith is discovered and battles the druid, but is injured by the druid's lightning only to be healed by the yellow fluid before escaping in Pidge's Green Lion. Shiro and Allura are also discovered and flee to the escape pods, but Allura sacrifices herself to allow Shiro to escape and she is captured by the Galra.

13 "The Black Paladin"

With Allura's capture, the Paladins are quick to mount a rescue mission. When they arrive, Zarkon activates a particle barrier, trapping them inside. Voltron is quick to destroy most of the Galran forces, but are forcibly separated somehow by Zarkon and Haggar. The Paladins scramble to rescue Allura while Shiro is suddenly ejected from the Black Lion. As he tries to get back to his lion, he encounters Haggar and is easily overwhelmed by her powers, only to be rescued by Allura and Hunk. Zarkon moves to claim the Black Lion, revealing himself as the original Black Paladin of Voltron, but Keith intercepts and battles him, against Coran's advice. Zarkon easily overpowers Keith's Red Lion with his mastery over the black bayard, being able to form a multitude of different weapons in an instant. Before Zarkon can kill Keith, Shiro rescues him with the Black Lion. The Castle-ship is unable to form a wormhole to escape, until suddenly one of Zarkon's commanders destroys the sentries guarding the barrier generator and shuts it down. As they escape through a wormhole, Haggar hits it with her lightning, causing the portal to become unstable. The lions are separated from the Castle-ship in the wormhole, each of them falling to parts unknown.

The Verdict:

Netflix released all 13 episodes on June 10, 2016 and I honestly totally forgot about it until a friend reminded me over the past weekend. The first season is technically 10 episodes because the first episode is the length of roughly three episodes rolled up in one.

While I love the updated visuals and reworked designs for the classic tried and true Voltron formula, I have to admit that my biggest issue with this series is how it's titled Voltron, but it's more about the pilots than actually the legend of Voltron itself. Granted, that's not really a bad thing considering in the original Voltron anime, 90% of the plots revolved around a Power Rangers style formula of the Space Explorers/Voltron Force pilots sitting around the castle on Planet Aris until one of Witch Haggar's Robeasts show up. At least we're getting a lot more character development here in this series.

That being said, I felt they rushed a few developments at the cost of less screen time for the Lions and Voltron. The revelation that Pidge was really a girl (Katie Holt) was reminiscent of plot twist used to fool Prince Lotor in the original anime when the pilots were captured and forced to give up their Lions to save Pidge's home planet being held hostage. I don't know what they are planning with Shiro but it seems like they are going to combine both the English and Japanese storylines for Sven Holgersson in the original GoLion Voltron anime. I loved the plot twist where Zarkon was revealed to be a fallen Paladin and proved to be just as formidable without a Lion than with one. It reminded me of the dynamic when Team Dai Gurren fought the Spiral King in the Gurren Lagann anime. It was a nice touch that Haggar the Witch isn't a one trick pony in this iteration as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more from those two as the titular villains moving forward.

For those old enough to remember, but this was Coran's response to how to deal with Allura
when she wanted to be a Paladin in the original Voltron anime...
I think the biggest takeaway from this reboot or rather re-imagining of the Voltron lore is that Princess Allura is nowhere from being the damsel in distress cliche that she was in the original continuity to the point that it was pathetic, regardless of the fact she ended up being one of the pilots of the Voltron Lions. I can't be too surprised when Avatar and especially Korra sported multiple strong female characters.

For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed this reboot of the Voltron lore, even though it screams the same wit and humor that Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are known for. I guess that's their niche for their works since it's the same studio behind this reboot. At the same time, I guess everyone would be happy for a fresh take on Voltron after that mess Nickelodeon put out there called Voltron Force that pretty much bastardized the original lore to the point it can't be salvaged.

Season Two was recently confirmed and I hope they listen to the critiques of this first season. They sacrificed a lot of action in favor of establishing and laying the ground work for a lot of character development that could have been saved for later down the road. You would have thought that they would have learned from the response from Korra and Avatar that the show thrived more when they had a perfect balance of action, character development, and comedy. Season One had a bit too much of one and not much of the other and I hope they change that with the next season.

Watch It or Don't Bother?

Watch it for sure, but don't go into this series thinking that this is the same Voltron that you grew up with from 80's. This is a different creature entirely - and that not necessarily a bad thing. In this case, change is a good thing. I'm sure there's more fans like myself glad to see Voltron revived for a new generation of audiences in a proper fashion. The season leaves a LOT of questions unanswered but I hope the wait for the second season isn't that far away.
