AEW Women's Tag Team Cup Tournament: The Deadly Draw - Night 1 (Aug. 3, 2020) & Night 2 (Aug. 10, 2020) -- Results & Afterthoughts

On the July 22, 2020 episode of Dynamite, AEW announced a women's tag team tournament consisting of eight teams that would begin that summer. The winning team will be awarded the tournament cup trophy. The rules of the tournament were that all sixteen women had to draw a random color with the matching colors becoming a team; all selections were final. This concept is similar to World Championship Wrestling's BattleBowl tournament where the teams were drawn at random in a "Lethal Lottery". The tournament began on August 3, 2020, airing on AEW's YouTube channel, and will conclude on a special Saturday Night Dynamite episode on August 22.

Keep that first rule in mind as you will quickly see that there's not a goddamn thing random about these draws.

Night 1 (Aug. 3, 2020)

Glad to see Veda Scott on my TV screen again. Last time I've seen her on a wrestling program was on one of IMPACT's Knockouts Knockdown PPVs.

The best thing about this tournament for me right off the bat was hearing Veda Scott's voice on commentary alongside the legendary Tony Schiavone. Veda is no stranger to calling women's tournaments and women's wrestling in general, so it's a pure delight to have her on board to call the action.

Madusa (WWE Hall of Famer Alundra Blayze) made her return to TNT programming in 20+ years with her AEW debut as the introducer for this tournament. That really came out of left field, but I can't be too surprised when Madusa has had similar roles for other promotions over the years, such as recently for Stardom.

Shaul Guerrero makes her AEW debut here as the ring announcer for this event. I'm glad to see someone pick her up as I thought she wasn't bad in the role when she filled in for Melissa Santos in Lucha Underground's final season.

The Nightmare Sisters (Allie & Brandi Rhodes) def. Mel (Melanie Cruise) and Penelope Ford (w/ Kip Sabian)

I didn't notice this during the initial airing until a friend of mine pointed this out for I could rewind and rewatch this clip, but Allie CLEARLY cheats to get on the team that she wanted for this tournament behind Brandi and Dasha's backs.

The Nightmare Collective has been dead and buried for months, but apparently Mel didn't get the memo that she has permission to grow her hair back out. Allie did majority of the work on offense for her team until she could tag in Brandi, who had a minor "reunion" of sorts with Mel that turned ugly - much like the most of this match. For the first match in this tournament, this was NOT a great start at all. Sloppy moves and botched spots left and right. The more I see of Brandi in the ring, whether it was in IMPACT, ROH, and now here in AEW, I can totally see why WWE opted for keeping her in the role of a ring announcer. I thought she was best as Cody's valet, but she seems deadset in proving people wrong.

Allie had the EXACT same look on my face as I did when I was watching at home.

(Shrugs) It's not my money Brandi's wasting. It's Tony Khan's since he's keeps funding these constant vanity projects of hers.

I swear though... If Brandi and Allie win this whole thing, I'm going to roast Brandi over the coals about it. I didn't tear into her like most did about that AEW Heels thing but if she shoehorns herself into being the winner of this tournament just to add cloat to her resume, then I'm calling her out on her bullshit.

In all seriousness, if I was Allie, I wouldn't trust Brandi Rhodes. She's the one who's suddenly acting like a heel in interviews but babyfacing it in matches and for her Chief "Brandi" Officer position. Pick one alignment and stick with it. This isn't musical chairs. Isn't that what people make fun of The Big Show for doing all these years?

Anna Jay (w/ The Dark Order) and Tay Conti (formerly NXT's Taynara Conti) def. Ariane Andrew (formerly WWE's Cameron) & Nyla Rose (w/ Vicki Guerrero)

I HAD to make this meme after seeing her show up on Dynamite the week prior...

(Whistles) Boy, did I get a good laugh when it was announced that Cameron (AKA the woman who said the best match of all-time was between Alicia Fox and Melina) was debuting for AEW and would be Nyla Rose's partner for this tournament.

Nyla, I would appalled too if Cameron was my partner in this.

To her credit, she was nowhere as bad as she was back in her WWE days here, but that's not saying much. Anna Jay shines more in singles matches than clusterfuck tag team matches like this, but she's a lot better than one would expect for one with so few years into the business. Conti's training from the Performance Center shines as a lot of her movements look polished and methodical, instead of doing stuff to do them like how 90% of the AEW roster goes about a match. I still don't see what was the big fascination about Conti though, but she has a platform here in AEW to show why she should have been a bigger star in WWE.

I shook my head at how much selling Nyla did for Jay and Conti after tearing through both women. I loved the finish here though. I had to replay it twice because I loved it so much. Excellent finish to a very bland match. I can totally get behind this JayTay pairing.

Post-match, Nyla Rose laid waste to Ariane Andrew and took out the trash like she is - rightfully so  after costing her team the win there.

Tournament Brackets updated following Night 1 results.

Night 2 (Aug. 10, 2020)

Big Swole (Ariel Monroe) and Lil' Swole (Nicole Savoy) def. Leva Bates (w/ Peter Avalon) and Rache Chanel

The first thing to come out of my mouth when they said Big Swole was teaming with "Lil' Swole" was WTF. Then I got a closer look and went "Isn't that Nicole Savoy?" Jesus. More and more time has gone by and I wonder why she hasn't followed Mercedes Martinez and Shayna Baszler into WWE for a Trifecta reunion following her stint in the Mae Young Classic. If AEW can sign her to a contract, I say go for it. It's not like she's doing anything with Shimmer, Shine, or any other promotions that would get in the way of her on-screen appearances right now. Savoy can add some more technical finesse that is severely lacking in terms of talent in that women's division.

Savoy gets cool points from me just for merely wearing that One Punch Man shirt though.

This match was fine for what it was. No, wait... I'll give these ladies props, even though I think that Big Swole is the same amount of entertaining as Baron Corbin to me. This was the best match out of the two weeks of this tournament so far, but that's not a high compliment to give these ladies when there wasn't much to write home about this tournament so far. I don't know what the fuck was going on with Rache Chanel's gimmick. Wasn't she the one standing in the crowd with MJ Jenkins on one episode of Dynamite a few months ago?

How are the Librarians still a thing and still employed in this company? I just don't get it at all. This company had enough common sense to realize that the Nightmare Collective had go-away heat from every scope of their fanbase, but yet this gimmick (along with the Dark Order) is still a thing? I would love to see Leva Bates fall back into her lovable cosplayer gimmick that everyone knew and loved from her indie days. The hardcore indie fanboys are the bulk of AEW's fanbase anyway, so you can't tell me that wouldn't have gone over.

Diamante and Ivelisse def. Dasha and Rachael Ellering

The backstage interview where Madusa came up to Dasha and let her know that she was going to be able to compete in this tournament was SOOOO goddamn cringe-worthy from Dasha's FORCED acting here. To say that she left WWE to get away from that, it's even worse to see her doing the same thing here in AEW.

That being said, she wasn't bad at all in this match, especially to say that she hasn't been wrestling very long. Her biggest misstep was towards the end of the match where it looked like she was a deer in headlights trying to keep up with what was going on for the finish. Speaking of that finish, she had absolutely no idea how to take those moves, but it was more shocking to see a Canadian Destroyer actually end a match and not be a goddamn transition or throwaway, common spot. I'm sure someone will correct me, but wasn't Ivelisse using that as a finisher in Lucha Underground?

I hate to make fun of anyone's weight, but it was pretty noticeable that Ellering had put on some considerable weight since her appearances on NXT and IMPACT programming. I remember her being a beast of a woman in terms of stature, but she was more toned and muscular than her better half in Kassius Ohno. Now it's looking like they are on the same diet - or lack of thereof. All jokes aside, Ellering is still a great for AEW if they could sign her to that women's division. They are extremely lacking in strong hands to be enhancement talent and Ellering did a great job in that position when IMPACT's Knockout division was in a transitional period a few years ago.

Much like Ivelisse and Diamante's first two bouts in AEW, this wasn't their best work, but I'm confident that we will see a better showing with them by the time this tournament is all said and done.

As for Dasha, I don't know if she's more interested in being a backstage interviewer and occasional ring announcer or being an in-ring talent, but she's got a lot of promise. I'm anxious to see how far her talents could grow within the right environment. Sadly, I don't think this women's division is the place to go if she's looking to challenge herself.

Updated brackets following Night 2.

Afterthoughts:

I'm sure that the AEW diehards don't want to admit it, but the first night of this tournament was NOT good at all. The standout performance above the rest was Veda Scott on commentary with Tony Schiavone. I really hope they have enough brains to sign her to some type of contract after this tournament is over. Veda is a Jack (or Jane rather...) of All-Trades - she can talk her ass off. She can act as a manager/valet as needed and she can wrestle too if needed. Veda's not going to be pulling five star matches out of her hat, but I always thought she was an asset to whatever promotion managed to bring her in. I thought it was a massive disservice that her talents aren't being used in any company right now, even before this pandemic started.

I do like that AEW is using this as a platform to introduce some new women onto their roster, but at the same time, it's a double-edged sword when they should be using this tournament to establish and feature more of the women who aren't booked on Dynamite regularly, like Abadon, Bea Priestley, or Sadie Gibbs - even though the latter two have been released by the company as of this posting.

Night 2 was a better pill to swallow than Night 1 was by a mile. I'm dreading going into the semi-finals I don't think the match-ups will be very good outside of the team of TayJay against Ivelisse and Diamante. That's the only match I'm really looking forward to in the next round of matches.

Ring of Honor: Women of Honor Special (December 11, 2016) -- Results & Afterthoughts

On the week of December 11, 2016, Ring of Honor TV devoted an entire episode of their weekly programming block to the Women of Honor division.

Deonna Purazzo vs. Candice LeRae

Great to see Deonna in her natural element here instead of being a jobber to Asuka on NXT, losing in seconds. A strong back and forth bout between these two women. Gotta admit that Candice fits better here than being tossed around on the indies like a ragdoll by grown ass men.

I was surprised that they let LeRae do Joey Ryan's "Ball-Plex" on Deonna. Even commentary was surprised as they didn't want to refer to it by name.

My only suggestion here would be to ask the girls to slow it down a bit (especially towards the end) and allow the crowd to digest everything going on for their execution don't look rushed or sloppy. That Fujiwara Armbar from Deonna that she used for the win could give Becky Lynch's Disarm Her/Dishonor a run for her money though. Who knows, we could see Deonna WWE bound sooner more than later if those rumors for a women's tournament in the same vein of the CWC and the UK tournaments in 2017.

Veda Scott & Kennedy Brink def. Sumie Sakai & Faye Jackson (w/ Solo Darling)

Faye has enough rearview back there in her truck that would make Naomi jealous. I'm still shocked that Sumie Sakai is still wrestling after all of these years. I remember seeing her on the first few SHIMMER volumes back in the early 2000s. Sadly, this might be the last WOH event we see Veda Scott on after she asked for her release from the company over the past week, so that means this match was taped a quite a while back as Veda Scott hasn't been featured on ROH programming for a few months now. At least Faye has a MUCH more flattering outfit for her figure than Nia Jax. WWE, please take notes.

Overall, there wasn't much to write home about here. Pretty much your average run-of-the-mill women's wrestling match that you could find in any promotion nowadays. This felt more like an exhibition for showing off the many different personalities in this division than anything else. Sakai was the acting veteran here to lead these girls throughout this match, but there were still a ton of sloppy spots and botches in this match, especially to say that this match lasted FAR longer than I would have liked it to.

Mandy Leon def. Jessicka Havok

For the WWE fans who read this blog, Mandy Leon is the person who NXT's Aliyah tries to steal her mannerisms from. Havok looks like she put on more weight since her brief TNA run a while back. If this division is being built off Mandy being the underdog as she's growing in skill and gaining experience then it's working for the most part with these roadblocks constantly thrown her way. As much as I do like her character, I'm more sold on Taeler Hendrix or Kelly Klein being the first champion whenever ROH gets off their asses and give these girls something to fight for. Much like everything else on this show to this point, you can add another "meh" average finish to this match as Mandy score the win after Deonna Purazzo distracted Havok long enough to roll her up.

Both girls got chokeslams for their just desserts and sold the shit out of 'em too. Havok could definitely help this division out as their resident powerhouse/monster if she decides to stick around full-time.

I honestly felt bad that the ROH crowd didn't react to next to nothing here in this match as it's such an oddity to see the women featured in ROH outside of eye candy.

Main Event: Kellly Klein def. ODB

This was definitely the best match on this entire show as ROH saved the best for last. Kelly Klein is undefeated and unstoppable since arriving in ROH. I'm guessing that they are giving her a Ronda Rousey gimmick (something that it looks like NXT is going to do with Daria) as she runs through every competitor that ROH throws at her from around the world. What's even more awesome is that ODB made a rare ROH appearance on this episode, despite her semi-retirement from pro wrestling to work as a bartender.

FYI ODB also appears on Impact Wrestling's Total Non-stop Deletion special as well, facing against Sienna, aka Allisyn Kay.

Bonus: No Disqualification Match - Taeler Hendrix def. Mandy Leon

This match wasn't on the WOH special at all, but was a YouTube exclusive match shared on WOH Wednesday as part of Ring of Honor's channel. I honestly don't know why they didn't air this match on this episode as it was pretty damn good. They probably would have to chop it into pieces in the editing room for it would fit well within that hour of weekly ROH programming but if they are going forward with Mandy and Taeler being their leading ladies in this division going forward for 2017, I suggest featuring them more like this. It's a damn shame that this feud isn't getting TV time at all. I understand that ROH only has a hour to work with per week, but it wouldn't kill them to give the women more time of day. Taeler and Mandy busted their asses in this match and they should be applauded for their efforts here to elevate the division.

It's strange to me that they don't give them more time as those vignettes on their channel leading up to this match (Hail Hendrix Parts 1-4) were freakin' awesome. It wouldn't kill them to focus on more rising stars and scale back on showcasing the stars from New Japan a bit. WWE (along with TNA slightly...) have hit ROH hard in terms of taking their bigger stars and it's time to reset the wheel a bit as I seriously doubt that WWE is going to stop raiding names from ROH in 2017, especially when they have more WWE Network content to crank out. That's why Sinclair Network(s) need to invest more into this company and give wrestlers a reason to stay instead of taking a higher paycheck but less airtime (in most cases) and a shot at their dignity.

Closing Thoughts

Ring of Honor has to give the Women of Honor more television time instead of segregating them to their YouTube Channel or showing them off on these TV specials once every six months. It wouldn't hurt to give them at least 1-2 matches on their many, many iPPVs or even their TV tapings every few weeks. It's hard to make people outside of the devoted few like myself care about this division after only seeing them perform once in a blue moon. They have to be given room to develop their characters and get more comfortable performing on TV. That's why I can't be too critical of their in-ring performances quite yet. The WOH doesn't have full-time veteran leadership to guide them in the right direction and I hope that changes in 2017.

TNA One Night Only: Knockouts Knockdown 2 (2014) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Author's Note: I was going through my drafts of unfinished articles on this blog and I was shocked to see that this wasn't published yet. Strange as I could've swore I put it out there AGES ago. That being said, enjoy folks. (1/12/16)

Out of ALL of TNA's One Night Only annual events, this is easily my favorite since you guys should know that I'm a bit "crazy" about women's wrestling. TNA's Knockout Knockdown 2 originally aired on November 7, 2014 on PPV, but you can still order and watch the entire event in its entirety on Impact Wrestling's official YouTube page.

Special thanks to Modern Myth Photography for allowing me to use their superb photos for this article. Be sure to visit their official Facebook page for more of their amazing work.

I wouldn't be doing this write-up justice if I don't talk about the opening segment, where Ethan Carter III (formerly Derrick Bateman on WWE's NXT Redemption) and Rockstar Spud introduced this year's "budding" Knockouts, who were taking place in this year's tournament. This year's tournament features Marti Belle, Scarlett Bordeaux, Reby Sky, Veda Scott, Mia Yim (returning from last year), Jessica Havok, Karlee Perez, and Deonna Purrazzo.

To my delight, Impact Wrestling took the time to play off almost ALL of these guest starring Knockouts personalities and backstories into this event, starting with addressing the elephant in the room about Karlee Perez and EC3's past from WWE as the popular troublemaking couple, BateMax (Bateman & Maxine).

The jokes don't end here as Scarlett Bordeaux plays a drunken party girl who is obviously feeling the aftermath of hanging out as one of Adam Rose's Rosebuds in WWE. Reby Sky plays off the so-called "beef" between herself and Velvet Sky. Veda Scott recycles her gimmick from FWE as a shy, yet bubbly babyface (for now...). Mia Yim vows to make a stronger impact in this year's tournament. All this while Rockstar Spud finds love with Marti Belle, who opts to be his first-ever girlfriend.

Gail Kim def. Veda Scott

This match started off innocent enough as Veda Scott was geddy with joy to face her "idol" in this opening contest.

I could tell that Veda Scott was nervous working with a woman as talented and well-known as Gail Kim, but this was a fun match to watch. I was happy that I could cross off another fantasy match-up off my list of women's wrestling bouts I would like to see in my lifetime.

Angelina Love def. Scarlett Bordeaux

It was good to see that Scarlett Bordeaux was putting her gimmick as a former Rosebud to WWE's Adam Rose's "party posse" to good use here. Or maybe we should refer to her as a former Hoopla Hottie from the House of Truth in Ring of Honor?

Nothing against Scarlett in the least, but she lasted longer than I thought she would against former Knockouts Champion, Angelina Love.

Reby Sky def. Velvet Sky

Madison Rayne def. Jessicka Havok

Very bad timing for this match. I guess TNA didn't expect that they would have signed Jessica Havok (currently Havok AKA the former Knockouts Champion) to the roster by the time that this Pay-Per-View aired. Much like everything else on this card, it was recorded VERY early into this year, so we don't get to see the meanstreak and pure domination from Havok that we have used to with Havok over the past few months.

Taryn Terrell def. Karlee Perez

After a promo like that, I'm STILL surprised on why WWE allowed a woman as talented as Karlee Perez go. Much like Ethan Carter III, WWE's loss is now Impact Wrestling and currently Lucha Underground's gain - she is Mil Muertes' valet, Catalina, on the El Rey Network.

Mia Yim def. Brittany

Mia Yim (now the Dollhouse's Jade) is no stranger to battling Santana Garrett (Brittany) as they have managed to top the charts on the indie scene with their match against each other in 2015 as a Match of the Year candidate. Here, you can see the beginnings of their destinies against each other as they have excellent chemistry with each other.

My only regret here is that TNA didn't keep Brittany as staple part of the Knockouts division.

Brooke Tessmacher def. Deonna

Out of the young newcomers to debut at the this event, I think Deonna shows the most promise. Fast forward two years later and she's managed to garner enough experience underneath her belt to work both Impact Wrestling's One Night Only event and NXT tapings in the first week of January 2016.

Brooke was switching back into her heel gimmick and took her frustrations out on the young rookie. Not a bad match for both women at all, just really didn't stand out among everything else on this card.

Marti Belle def. ODB

This match was more about playing the crowd than the actual in-ring aspect and I had no problems with this as this match was a riot of laughs from bell to bell. No pun intended. Rockstar Spud is definitely one to provide plenty of laughs for sure.

ODB def. Rockstar Spud

This match was comedy gold and worth the price of the PPV alone. After his "break-up" with Marti Belle, Spud tries to take his frustrations out on ODB and it doesn't go his away at all. This was one of the last matches that ODB/Jessica Kresa worked for TNA in 2014 and boy did she go out with a bang... or rather BAM!

Madison Rayne def. Angelina Love, Brooke Tessmacher, Gail Kim, Marti Belle, Mia Yim, Reby Sky and Taryn Terrell in a Queen Of The Knockouts Gauntlet Match

The event concludes with this gauntlet match with no real surprises unlike the previous year's finale. As much as I love Gail Kim, I was glad to see someone else walk away with the crown for once.

Ring of Honor Final Battle 2014 -- Results & Afterthoughts

Final Battle 2014 is a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by Ring of Honor (ROH). It took place on December 7, 2014 at the Terminal 5 in New York City, New York. Final Battle is ROH's biggest event of the year, similar to WWE's WrestleMania and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling's Bound for Glory.

Four Corner Survival Match - Hanson defeated Jimmy Jacobs (with B.J. Whitmer), Mark Briscoe, and Caprice Coleman

I've been a fan of Hanson since the Top Prospect Tournament at the beginning of the year and it's been a joy to watch him transform into his own star by the end of 2014. It was a bit lame to see Jimmy Jacobs and Mark Briscoe in this filler opening match, but they all looked strong here with the younger talent, Hanson and Caprice Coleman.

Roderick Strong def. Adam Page via referee stoppage

A part of me wishes that Roderick Strong would be the one member of the Decade that would be competing for the World Championship to give that group a sense of purpose other than feuding among themselves, but this match wasn't bad at all. Adam Page is growing into a man of his own right and I can tell that he's being groomed to take Strong's spot once Strong decides to splinter away from the rest of the faction.

The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) and ACH def. The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) and Cedric Alexander

I love ALL of these guys in this match and you put them all together in ONE bout, you know it's going to be magical. It doesn't top most of the Bucks' other bouts from throughout the year, but it's definitely worth a look. If you're not a believer that ACH and Cedric Alexander have a bright future in this business, you will be a believer afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised if either WWE or TNA will be trying to scoop them up sooner more than later.

Michael Elgin defeated Tommaso Ciampa

I love seeing Elgin compete against ANYONE as I personally see him as ROH's Kurt Angle. He go toe-to-toe with anyone and make it look like one hell of a match. When he was squared up against Tommaso Ciampa, I knew this was going to be golden. I was surprised that Elgin came through with the win though as I was convinced that ROH would give Ciampa the win to balance out his kayfabe issues with authority over the last few months.

Tag team match for the ROH World Tag Team Championship - reDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly) (c) defeated Time Splitters (Alex Shelley and Kushida) via submission

If there's anything to learn from this match, it's that Alex Shelley doesn't need Chris Sabin anymore as a tag team partner. Fuck a Motor City Machine Guns reunion. Kushida has all of MCMG's old moves down and then some new ones with Shelley. I'm glad to see Shelley still making a name for himself out there in Japan. As for reDRagon, this was another solid outing for them in their tag title reign. I have to be honest. At the start of 2014, I thought reDRagon were just two losers who just lucked out to win the gold by a fluke, but they have won me over throughout 2014 with their continued success - each match being better than the last. reDRagon and Jay Lethal are among the best champions that ROH have seen in quite some time.

Moose (with Prince Nana and Stokely Hathaway) defeated RD Evans (with Veda Scott)

This match ended up being a squash as Veda Scott played RD Evans for a fool and betrayed him to join up with Prince Nana, effectively ending their partnership and taking on Moose as their sole client. Much like Brock Lesnar, Moose ended #TheNewStreak after whatever number of wins that RD Evans made up with zero losses. The joke was funny while it lasted. Now for all of these individuals to move onto bigger and better things in 2015.

After her exposure on TNA's Knockout Knockdown and FWE ReFueled, I hope Veda Scott is picked up by Impact Wrestling. I would love to see her as part of that roster once she decides to branch out from Ring of Honor.

Singles match for the ROH World Television Championship - Jay Lethal (with Truth Martini and J Diesel) (c) defeated Matt Sydal

To say this was Matt Sydal's first PPV bout back in ROH, he definitely hasn't skipped a beat. If you thought his match against AJ Styles was amazing then you will be impressed here. Great match from top to bottom. Lethal's Lethal Injection (RKO) counter to Sydal's Shooting Star Press would make Randy Orton proud. Jay Lethal ended 2014 on a strong note as professional wrestling's best mid-card title holder of 2014, defending his title around the clock and overcoming EVERY challenge thrown his way. Whether you love or hate him, you have to admit that Lethal's reign has been impressive.

Fight Without Honor for the ROH World Championship - Jay Briscoe (c) def. Adam Cole

From start to finish, these guys gave each other everything they had and then some. I honestly thought that Adam Cole was going to walk away as ROH World Champion again. Boy, was I wrong. Adam Cole is definitely ROH's best pure heel and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't wind up with the title by the end of 2015. That being said, I'm sure the bad blood between the Briscoes and the Kingdom is FAR from over.
