AEW Fyter Fest (June 29. 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

Fyter Fest was a professional wrestling event promoted by All Elite Wrestling (AEW). This was the second event under the AEW banner and took place on June 29, 2019, at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida alongside the Community Effort Orlando (CEO) fighting game event. The name of the event is a parody of the fraudulent Fyre Festival. The event aired for free on the B/R Live streaming service.

The card comprised nine matches, including three on the Buy In pre-show. In the main event, Jon Moxley defeated Joey Janela in a non-sanctioned match. Other prominent matches saw The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) defeated Lucha Brothers (Pentagón Jr. and Rey Fénix) and Laredo Kid in a six-man tag team match.

Results:

The Buy-In (Pre-Show)

Best Friends (Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta) defeated SoCal Uncensored (Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian) and Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) Three-way tag team match
To advance to All Out for an opportunity at a first round bye in the AEW World Tag Team Championship tournament

At first glance, I had Private Party pegged as another Cryme Tyme clone like WWE/NXT's Street Profits, but they definitely made me into believers here.

A lot of this match was great to watch, but I felt that the wrong team won here. Private Party definitely won over this crowd and it seemed like the air left the building when they didn't pick up the win after all of those near-falls and big spots. It just ultimately felt like a huge waste of time where they didn't put over the new blood here.

Allie defeated Leva Bates (with Peter Avalon)

This "Librarian" gimmick died on arrival here for Leva Bates and Peter Avalon, despite the fact that Bates pretty much had her ass hanging out on that skirt/shorts which she was wearing. Nothing much else to write home about this match that it was what you've come to expect from Allie's performances in Impact Wrestling.

Michael Nakazawa defeated Alex Jebailey Hardcore match

I honestly don't get what's the big deal about the Naka-Naka-Nakazawa guy and why he's pouring baby oil on himself as if he's Street Fighter IV's Hakan, but this match was stupid from bell to bell. I did chuckle a bit at Justin Wong at ringside handing off a tournament edition arcade stick to use as a foreign object, but at the same time, it's even more moronic when you know how much those things run for at retail ($149 to $249+ easy). I could hear the silent screams of the Super Smash Bros. Melee fans watching in terror at them using a Gamecube controller as a weapon as well. Those things aren't easy to come by either, especially brand new as the years roll on.

Truth be told, this is a rematch of the match they were supposed to have last year when Jebailey got injured training for the match prior to last year's CEO fighting game event when Kenny Omega brought his entourage down to play from New Japan for a wrestling show as part of the event. There wasn't much press about that event last year because AEW's name wasn't attached to it.

Main Show:

Cima defeated Christopher Daniels

As the first match of the "main show", I definitely thought this match delivered in a lot of aspects by playing off Daniels and Cima's strengths. Like I said in my Double or Nothing write-up, it's great to see these guys facing off again after what seems like forever from their time in Ring of Honor.

Riho defeated Yuka Sakazaki and Nyla Rose

Yuka's lucky she didn't get decapitated off the whiplash there. Besides that, why the fuck this wasn't the damn finish?

The bulk of this match did wonders establishing Nyla Rose as a wrecking machine. As impressive as that Diving Knee Drop (Andre the Giant style) over the rope hung Yuka Sakazaki was, I felt that move was a massive waste if it wasn't the finish, despite how impressive it was. Much like the triple threat tag team opener, I felt that the wrong person won here. Riho stealing the win killed any sort of momentum that Nyla Rose had going as a monster. She essentially did all of that heavy lifting and tossing these girls around like lawn furniture for nothing here. I don't want to discredit Riho and Yuka here, but they should have been cannon fodder to establishing Rose as the massive obstacle in the way of anyone - namely Dr. Britt Baker (who they are obviously marketing/establishing as their top babyface female) - gunning for the AEW Women's Championship (whenever they crown the first champion).

By the way, Nyla Rose was allegedly wearing ring gear inspired by Killer Instinct's Black Orchid. I honestly didn't notice that until I saw the photos online, but whatever.

Adam Page defeated Jimmy Havoc, Jungle Boy (with Luchasaurus), and MJF

For the second show in a row, MJF is the star here. That heel promo that he cut on this crowd was hilarious and one of the best things on this show bar none.

Every time I hear of Jungle Boy I think of the Johnny Bravo cartoon character of the same name.

Jimmy Havoc and Jungle Boy just come off as career midcarders in the presence of Adam Page and MJF. This company would be insane not to be pushing these two guys as their top "young" talent over the established ex-WWE talent and "indie darlings" that are running this place. You have gold with MJF. DO NOT SQUANDER IT.

This match was okay, but business didn't pick up until MJF and Adam Page squared off towards the end. There were a few fun spots with Jungle Boy (with the occasional assist from Luchasaurus) and Jimmy Havoc, but this was both MJF and Adam Page's time to shine. I didn't doubt that Page was going to win here, especially when he is set to face Chris Jericho to crown the first AEW World Champion at their next PPV.

Cody Rhodes (with Brandi Rhodes) and Darby Allin fought to a time limit draw

That was absolutely moronic.

At first glance, Darby Allin looks like some kid trying to cosplay Jack Skullington from The Nightmare Before Christmas crossed with your typical Create-A-Wrestler found in WWE games and most e-federations. I thought the idea of Cody Rhodes having a competitive match against this scrawny kid was comical on paper. Who the fuck actually knew who this guy was before this show? I would love to see the poll results from that question. To his credit though, he made me a believer by the end of their 20 minute draw. Someone needs to pull Allin aside and tell him to lay off a bit on those stupid spots. The Jimmy Snuka sell between the ropes down to the bump at ringside didn't look fun at all and he's lucky that he wasn't hurt off that. If that wasn't bad enough, that Coffin Drop (trust fall backwards from the top rope) onto the CORNER of the ring apron was absolutely moronic.

I don't care who you are, but it's just plain stupid to be taking unprotected chair shots to the head in 2019.

As for the chair shot from Shawn Spears in the post-match segment that seems to be the talk of the town, I'll weigh in briefly about that. The stupidest thing I saw about that was Cody didn't even bother to put his hands up to protect himself. I know they wanted to make it look "legit" without that, but in this day and age when we know about the horrors of how damaging concussions are to the brain, there's absolutely no reason to be taking unprotected chair shots, even if the chair was "gimmicked" as how the Young Bucks put it. Watching live, I thought Cody was legitimately hurt when the back of his head started pouring out with blood like a fountain. It didn't help that everyone emptied out from the locker room to check on him. That was a scary scene and it didn't need to look

The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) defeated Lucha Brothers (Pentagón Jr. and Rey Fénix) and Laredo Kid

The Young Bucks came out dressed as Street Fighter's Ryu and Ken, while Kenny Omega, dressed as Akuma, came out and hit a Raging Demon on some random fan who was there as part of their entrance.

I knew what to expect from Laredo Kid from seeing his matches on MLW in his few appearances there, but for as cool and amazing a lot of the action in this match was, I hate to say that match was just all moves and no narrative outside of garnering cheap pops from this niche crowd.

Surprised to see Fenix doing this spot again after almost breaking his neck doing it on Impact Wrestling's last PPV.

Jim Cornette would've lost his mind if he actually saw this spot and didn't fast forward past it.

I wanted to slap everyone in the ring after that Hadoken spot though. Just no. Leave that shit for house shows and the indie feds that don't have a major television deal coming up. Seeing stuff like that just makes me continue to question exactly how serious are Omega and the Bucks when it comes to how big of a deal this is going to be.

Jon Moxley defeated Joey Janela in a Non-sanctioned match

Here's my problem with this match right off the bat. Commentary was attempting to sell the fact that AEW wants nothing to do with this "non-sanctioned match" and these fools got full entrances and pyro. That completely contradicted what they said a few minutes prior to that. If AEW didn't sanction that match and didn't care then Moxley and Janela would be fighting in a barn somewhere in Buttfuck, Indiana (laughs) with someone filming this shit on their phone like this was the Final Deletion or some shit.

As for the match itself, it's that typical hardcore craziness in same vein as Jimmy Havoc, Sami Callihan, and most of the guys in CZW have made popular over the last few years. I'm glad there weren't any light tubes or any of that nonsense, but they enough going on here to entertain those interested in this style of match. It's not necessarily my cup of tea, but to each his/her own I guess.

The show ended with Kenny Omega returning the favor to Moxley following his attack on him during the closing moments of Double or Nothing. Moxley took a ton of punishment here, which makes me think that Omega and Moxley's match won't be a standard one-on-one match, but with a hardcore stipulation of some kind, even though I think their first encounter would benefit without one.

Closing Thoughts

I've seen tons of people tear into this show and heard podcasts either do the same or attempt to defend what we saw here. I have an unique standing in this conversation as I come from both sides of the spectrum. As a fighting game fan and on/off again member of the FGC (fighting game community), I thought this was pretty cool of Community Effort Orlando (CEO) to host this event in tandem with AEW. At the same time, I think no one would have cared about this if AEW's name wasn't attached. Like I mentioned earlier in this write-up, Kenny Omega dragged several of his friends and colleagues along from New Japan last year to run a similar special wrestling event for the CEO crowd. There wasn't much press about it then either as it was catered specifically for the niche fighting game crowd. That was majority the problem here. AEW set up Fyter Fest to cater to this specific crowd and didn't factor in that they would have more eyeballs on this product, namely the masses who don't play nor follow the fighting game community nor it's competitive scene(s). That being said, a lot of the insider jokes and references were lost on the "outsiders" looking in.

As a wrestling fan though, a lot of this still came off looking stupid to me and gave off that impression of "a tale of two cities" in terms of booking. Once again, we have the glaring issue where the stuff on the pre-show/Buy-In are turning off any potential new fans looking to give their product a chance before even the main show gets rolling. It shouldn't be this way. I'm not saying that everything on the pre-show should be 5 star matches, but at least think this stuff out and have someone in charge to filter this stuff and go "that's fucking stupid" and tell some of these people not to even tarnish their product with this right off the bat. I thought AEW were priding themselves off the fact that they aren't WWE with the cheesy comedy bits and cringe-worthy matches. At this rate, I beg to differ from what I have seen on the Buy-In cards for both Double or Nothing and Fyter Fest is that they leave a lot to be desired. If AEW thinks that garbage wrestling is going to set the wrestling world on fire then they are going to get a rude awakening when their weekly television deal kicks in this fall. I beg AEW to take this constructive criticism as not as a knock but as feedback to know what NOT to do when it truly counts. Otherwise, this thing is going to die quicker than Global Force Gold...

Impact Wrestling Presents United We Stand (April 4, 2019) -- Results & Afterthoughts

United We Stand was a professional wrestling internet pay-per-view (iPPV) event produced by Impact Wrestling that will take place on April 4, 2019 in Rahway, New Jersey. It was the second event in the 2019 Impact Wrestling pay-per-view schedule. Wrestlers from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) and Lucha Underground - with whom Impact has partnerships with - as well as stars from Major League Wrestling (MLW), Dragon Gate and Wrestle Pro also appeared on the card. The event was also streamed live on FITE TV.

I ordered the show for a mere $20 (a fair price IMO) off of the FITE TV app on my Amazon Fire Stick. The show aired without any streaming hiccups, but I did run into a few instances in the first half of the show where I either could barely hear anything or there wasn't any audio at all, especially in that backstage segment between Moose, Eddie Edwards, and Cage. I tweeted about it last night too, but I'm pretty sure that BotchaMania is going to have a field day in terms of citing the awkward camera cuts and production botches throughout the night. Don't get me wrong. This was a solid show from an in-ring talent perspective, but it came across as an extremely low budget indie show in terms of production and presentation. C'mon now, this is WrestleMania weekend. Everyone has to put their best foot forward and not settle for "just good enough" to be a part of the festivities to ride off WWE's coattails in terms of business for the weekend. Either go balls to the wall with the effort or don't do it at all, in my honest opinion.

There was a pre-show match live on Impact Wrestling's Twitch channel, but I didn't get back in from a food run in time to catch it, nor I was aware they were even doing a pre-show match period. That was some pretty bad advertising on Impact Wrestling's behalf there.

The result from that match saw Fallah Bahh and KM defeat the Heavenly Bodies and Team Espana to win the WrestlePro Tag Team Championships.

Ultimate X Match for a future X Division Championship Match
Impact World Champion Johnny Impact def. Jake Crist, Dante Fox, Pat Buck & Ace Austin

I was scratching my head at the start of this match to see that the Impact World Champion himself was competing in an Ultimate X Match. This was a welcome surprise, but wouldn't this have been something that Johnny had taken up prior to his World Championship aspirations? I guess they are going the route that Impact did with Lashley a few years prior where he had all of the Impact Wrestling Championships. It's either that or planning long-term where Johnny can get the X-Division Championship after losing it in the near-future and insert himself back into the main event picture by cashing in "Option C" to get another World title shot by vacating that title.

Out of all of the names from Lucha Underground that haven't been scooped up by WWE, I'm shocked that WWE (or any promotion really) hasn't snatched up Dante Fox (AR Fox) and Marty the Moth (Martin Casaus). Two talents that would add an exclamation point to any company's talent roster.

Speaking of talent, both Jack Evans and Kotto Brazil were absent from this match, even though they were advertised to be apart of this opener. I wonder what happened in that regard.

I don't want to say that this match was bad, but it wasn't nothing spectacular nor out of the ordinary in terms of these Ultimate X matches. Given the talent on hand here, I was a little disappointed in what we got here.

Team Lucha Underground (Aerostar, Drago, Marty The Moth Martínez and Daga) def. Team Impact (Brian Cage, Eddie Edwards, Moose, and Tommy Dreamer)

No offense in the least to Tommy Dreamer, but I was massively disappointed to see him show up as the last man for Team Impact. I get it - they are in the New York area so they wanted to cater to the old ECW fanbase for the nostalgia pop and they definitely got it for sure. I felt this match was a little too slow in terms of pacing, especially for all of the talent involved. The finish fell flat to me where Moose turned on his own teammates, allowing Marty the Moth to pick up the win over Team Impact.

That was just fucking gross...
I didn't have a damn problem with Team Impact picking up the win here as they deserve something with the question of whether or not their show/promotion is getting is another season is completely up in the air. Even the producers are saying that they are under the impression that the show is dead at this stage. It wasn't looking good that Lucha Underground/AAA and El Rey Network granted those talents who were suing them for refusing to release them from their contracts, notably Joey Ryan, King Cuerno, and Ivelisse. I'm anxious to see where those individuals are going to end up by the end of the year.

4-Way match for the Impact Knockouts Championship
Taya Valkyrie (c) def. Jordynne Grace, Katie Forbes, and Rosemary

Katie Forbes' fineness was a welcome surprise for this match. Every time I see that woman I'm taken back by her beauty, whether it's from catching up on WOW on the DVR on Axis or seeing her on the independent scene from time to time. RVD definitely reeled himself in one hell of a prize. There were a few stumbles in this match all around, but I thought it was decent for what we were given here. Rosemary was lured away by the arrival of Su Yung, which caused them to brawl into the back. I'm guessing they are playing up her role that she played in Allie's "death" on Impact Wrestling last week (done to write her character off their programming as she's signed with All Elite Wrestling). Rosemary's departure signified the finishing sequence that saw Jordynne Grace connect with a Michinoku Driver to Forbes, only for Taya to steal the win to retain her title.

That was a welcome surprise last night...

I'm not mad at these "screw job" finishes for Jordynne as it's the same thing that they are doing with Cage against Johnny Impact. In due time, both powerhouses will be holding Impact gold and I think it will be well worth the wait. If I had to complain/critique about anything involving Jordynne Grace is that she (along with Cage at times) sell their opponents' offense a bit too much for my taste. In Jordynne's case, I think it has to do with her still being fairly new to being on "mainstream" wrestling and showing respect to her opponents. Call me old fashioned, but I like to see the powerhouse archetypes in wrestling sell as few moves as possible.

The Latin American Xchange (Santana and Ortiz) (with Konnan) def. Promociones Dorado (Low-Ki and Ricky Martinez)

I was saddened at the lack of Salina de la Renta to escort her clients to the ring, but that was minor setback from what we got here in terms of action. This match wasn't as good as some of LAX's high profile feuds and matches over past two years, but it was a solid match nonetheless. Low-Ki returned to Impact here, rocking his Hitman 47 look while Ricky Martinez was thugged out as usual in terms of his ring gear. I hope MLW works with Impact Wrestling more often as those two promotions could really help each other out if they can manage to lend out talent sparingly to enhance their cards and/or storylines.

Intergender Match
Tessa Blanchard def. Joey Ryan

This was actually a really good match. I shouldn't have been surprised, given that Tessa Blanchard was involved, but I have to give props for where it's due. There were lots of back and forth between Ryan and Tessa, with Ryan targeting Tessa's arm in hopes to impair her for the long haul of this match's duration. Unfortunately, Joey Ryan had to squeeze in his stupid "dick throwing" spot into this match and that's where I mentally checked out in terms of buying into this match. They went into a sequence of multiple near-falls shortly after this, only for Tessa to crank out the win after connecting the Magnum (Diving Codebreaker) from the top rope.

I could have done completely without seeing Ryan's stupid dick throw spot here, but otherwise this was a solid bout. I'm sure Jim Cornette is somewhere losing his mind about his favorite female wrestler actually selling the infamous "dick spot"...

Singles match for the Impact X Division Championship
Rich Swann (c) defeated Flamita

I thought this match was the sleeper hit of the entire evening. Lots of back and forth action from both competitors, even though I was still a little saddened that Swann's original opponent (DragonGate's Yamato) was unable to make this event. Flamita was a solid replacement, even managing to make me buy into the possibility that the X-Division Championship could have changed hands here tonight. In the end, Swann got the win, but I wouldn't be opposed to see these two guys face one another again.

I enjoyed Rich Swann's new look here. About time that he distanced himself from the look that a friend of mine described best as "Swann trying out to be an extra on Roots" and more importantly from his ill-fated WWE career.

Monster's Ball Match - Sami Callihan defeated Jimmy Havoc

For me, this match felt like deja vu from what these two guys did EXACTLY in MLW towards the tail end over on MLW Fusion in the same type of match. What I couldn't get over was that they did some of the exact same spots too. Nothing out of the norm here if you're used to these crazy hardcore matches that Callihan has been putting his body through over the last few years since signing with Impact.

I swear wrestlers in general need to stop abusing that piledriver spot while standing on a bunch of chairs. It looks stupid and whoever is willing to take it has to be even stupider.

Extreme Rules Tag Team Match - The Lucha Bros (Fénix and Pentagón Jr.) def. Rob Van Dam and Sabu

This was the dream match-up that everyone was staying up for on a work night to see. This match started at roughly 1:21AM and it seemed like they were rushing through spots just to get to the finish. I believe there was an issue with the venue because the finish came out of nowhere and the competitors were left in the dark as the iPPV came to a close. As much I did like what they did with the time that they were given, I wish they were given more time.

On second though, more time could have been to Sabu's detriment (he even had his indie valet, Melissa Coates, here as his "genie" for his ring entrance surprisingly) as he was half-confused or out of place/sync with RVD on some of their spots together. To him and RVD's credit, they both looked great here as I had no idea that Sabu grew his hair back out while RVD is in amazing shape for his age. This is like day and night in comparison to Kurt Angle currently in WWE.

Once again, I just wish they gave these guys more time to work with.

Lucha Underground: Catrina vs. Melissa Santos (E13 S4) | Here We Are

Can we take a second and talk about how awesome that introduction scene between Catrina and Melissa Santos was from this week's episode of Lucha Underground was?

Even though fight cinematography where it's cut to hell from reaction shots back and forth usually drive me nuts in full-length films, I was fine with it here. This was the pay off to the storyline between Catrina and Melissa Santos that began once Fenix lost his Grave Consequences Match against Mil Muertes. Catrina then took his life force and restored her own, causing the Man of 1000 Lives to "die" for good. This left Melissa Santos struck with grief over the course of the last few weeks/months (I forget how the timeline works here in Lucha Underground) until things came to a boil a few weeks ago in Mil Muertes match against The Mack where Melissa refused to even call ring announcements. This sparked a brawl between her and Catrina that was pretty one-sided after Catrina left her laid out. This sequence is Melissa Santos' means of getting revenge on Catrina taking who she loved the most in the world out of her life.

While I'm sad to see Catrina "killed" again it seems, but I'm anxious to see how Mil Muertes functions on his own. We saw the chains come loose on Matanza this season after Dario's father ordered him to destroy the key that symbolized the last of his humanity. We saw the fruits of that labor last week during the wedding of Taya and Johnny Mundo, so I'm sure the shit is about to hit the fan with Mil Muertes on his own and off Catrina's leash.

I have no idea what to make of this "time displacement" nonsense with Aerostar though. That goes double with the soul-stealing/manipulation he was performing like Shao Khan in Mortal Kombat. I'll just wait and see on that one.

Impact Wrestling: ReDefined (August 30, 2018) -- Results & Afterthoughts; Bonus Comments on Slammiversary XVI

On August 30, 2018, Impact Wrestling featured their television special, ReDefined, in the place of their usual television episode/taping to feature several title matches and marquee matches, highlighting and focusing on various feuds up to this point in preparation for the road to their next PPV event, Bound for Glory.

I've been meaning to do a write-up on Impact Wrestling's PPV event, Slammiversary XVI, from July 22, 2018 for about two months now, but keep getting sidetracked. Ultimately, the opinions all around are unanimous about that event though - amazing show from top to bottom. I can't put this event over more. Even if you haven't checked out Impact Wrestling in a long time or even just new to their product, this show is a great spot to start before checking out ReDefined.

Quick Results from Slammiversary XVI:

Johnny Impact defeated Fenix, Taiji Ishimori and Petey Williams in a barn-burner to kick off this show in style. -  Definitely go out of your way to watch this match.

Tessa Blanchard defeated Allie - Continuing to show off why Tessa Blanchard belongs at the top spot of the Knockouts division going forward

Eddie Edwards defeated Tommy Dreamer - House of Hardcore rules match - First of many hardcore themed matches on this show. Wasn't too crazy about this but they got the point across.

Brian Cage defeated Matt Sydal (c) - Singles match for the Impact X Division Championship - Wasn't expecting anything less than a win for Cage here. Solid performance from both men, even though Sydal botched the Shooting Star Press towards the end.

Su Yung (c) defeated Madison Rayne - Singles match for the Impact Knockouts Championship - Even though they did some great storytelling in the build to this match, I can't admit that this match lived up to the hype. Another decisive win for Su Yung in her reign as champion, but I have to say that Rayne might have to step aside when it comes to all of these title shots she's been getting in not only Impact Wrestling but in Ring of Honor and other promotions as of late as she's on her road to appearing in WWE's Mae Young Classic II.

The Latin American Xchange (Santana and Ortiz) (with Konnan) (c) defeated The OGz (Hernandez and Homicide) (with King) - 5150 Street Fight for the Impact World Tag Team Championship - Crazy match right here. Only thing that held this back is that this was the second hardcore match on this card and there was a lot of "been there, done that" in terms of hardcore spots when you've seen LAX kill it with oVe earlier this year.

Pentagon Jr. (mask) defeated Sami Callihan (hair) - Mask vs. Hair match - Match of the Night IMHO. Pentagon Jr. is the king of these hardcore deathmatches in the modern day landscape of professional wrestling. Just do your favor and watch this match if you want to see the pure insanity that both Pentagon and Sami put their bodies through in this match. I wouldn't be surprised to see either of these men going for the Impact World title come Bound for Glory.

Austin Aries (c) defeated Moose - Singles match for the Impact World Championship - After that excellent video package to highlight and promote this match, I thought Moose was a shoe-in to pick up the title here. Boy was I wrong. Moose took one good Brainbuster from Aries and that's all she wrote. Too bad though as I thought this was a solid affair for both men.

Why Are These Events Important Going Forward?

Between Slammiversary XVI back in July and ReDefined last week, both shows creates a sense of new and fresh that the new, current regime running the company needed going forward once the mistakes of Dixie Carter and her entourage left the minds of fans that they turned away to show them, "Look we got our shit together now. Give us another chance."

Plus with all of the talent from House of Hardcore and more importantly, Lucha Underground, calling Impact Wrestling their home as of late, you can't really go wrong from the in-ring product. Seriously speaking though, TNA/Impact Wrestling's problem has NEVER been the actual in-ring wrestling part. Almost every wrestler who has stepped into one of their rings has held it down when push came to shove.

Before someone brings it up, I'm not talking about that Jenny Morasca versus Sharmell clusterfuck or that Rebel vs. Shelly Martinez botchfest either...

I mean that statement as their talent has more consistent standout performances than flops is all that I'm saying. You cannot deny that Impact Wrestling as a whole are beating WWE (as a whole as we can't just look at NXT on it's own as it's only measuring stick of match quality) in terms of their in-ring product on a consistent regular basis.

Currently, both their in-ring product and behind the scenes work is really shining. I was just talking with a friend the other day, discussing about how well that they have been building up Su Yung as this monstrous force of nature with her horde of zombie brides doing her dirty work. Her feuds with Allie, Rosemary, and recently with Madison Rayne have been great to see unfold on Impact TV tapings over the past few months. If that's not enough, Tessa Blanchard hasn't been in the Knockouts title hunt yet, but she's been having her presence felt throughout this division as a constant reminder that she has that title in her crosshairs. I'm wondering who is going to be that one Knockout who is going to give her the standout performance in-ring that she really needs to get up to the next level in Impact Wrestling. A lot of people are calling her ascension on the indies, similar to how Charlotte Flair rose to dominance in WWE and I can easily see why on that comparison. Both women are second/third generation wrestlers with relatives who hold an impressive pedigree to live up to. It's either come out guns blazing or sink to the bottom of the talent pool like a brick.

Moose was diagnosed with a concussion after this event and haven't seen at the Impact TV tapings that took places that following week. Even though I was shocked that Austin Aries didn't drop the title to Moose there, especially after that great build and video package that preceded the match on PPV to sell Moose up as the next big thing and flag bearer for the company going forward. The other news coming out of this event after recent weeks is that Austin Aries is going to be one of many featured talent on the upcoming wrestling show that WGN America is set to air this fall season. I'm guessing Impact had a change of heart and saw it as the opportunity to have Aries continue to carry the championship with even more exposure on another network as Aries has been making rounds popping up to challenge for Ring of Honor's Television Championship as well. I'm not saying that he's bad at the role in the least. I'm just surprised that they haven't taken the title off him by now, that's all.

Enough going off-topic on Slammiversary XVI coverage though, let's switch gears and focus on what you're really here to get my thoughts upon and that's ReDefined.

X-Division Championship Match - Brian Cage (c) def. Fenix

Really scary moment here as Cage almost botched the Jumping Powerbomb from the top rope during the finish. Fenix was able to get his neck up in time before the landing but damn that was scary to look at. Other than that spot, this was a solid opener.

Best spot of the entire match was Cage catching Fenix out of the suicide dive and suplexing him to the floor. Man, I wish more big guys would do that to all of these cruiserweights and lightweights throwing themselves around recklessly.

Eli Drake def. Brandon Tidwell

I have no idea what this was about but it ended up being a complete waste of time. Complete squash here. I don't understand why they are wasting Drake in a spot like this on this card, but whatever.

Knockouts Championship Match - Tessa Blanchard def. Allie and Su Yung (c) to become the NEW Knockouts Champion

Kinda sloppy starting off, but once they got on the same page, this wasn't a bad match at all. My favorite spots were the three way submission holds and the Military Press Tessa performed to toss Su Yung out of the ring and into the crowd of Undead Brides standing at ringside. Allie had Su Yung laid out in the finish, but Tessa rolled her up to steal the win.

I wouldn't call this a win in dominant fashion (that's why her post-match promo seemed a bit off to me when she was acting like it was afterwards), but that Knockouts title belongs on Tessa right now. She's their biggest female star on the rise and it would make more sense to have everyone chasing and challenging her going forward.

The Smoke Show w/ Scarlett Bordeaux, featuring Grado, Catalina, and Joe Hendry

I couldn't help but crack up laughing at Grado here in this. Catalina has a right to fear Scarlett as she's better at "manipulating" her boys more than she is. Can I mention that this whole storyline is a clever call back to Katie Lea's previous Impact Wrestling gimmick as Winter who was manipulating Angelina Love to do her bidding? Here, she's playing Joe Hendry and Grado potentially against each other. I wonder how many people caught the vulgar references on the walls of the scene/studio where they were having this segment.

Crazy how well Scarlett's gimmick is getting over to say she hasn't wrestled a single match in Impact Wrestling and it's all been just mere segments and vignettes for her since she made her debut. I think Impact Wrestling are sitting on a potential goldmine with this character if they continue to play this up properly.

Rich Swann def. Petey Williams

The whole story to this match was that Swann had the Canadian Destroyer scouted and had a counter to it every time that Petey went for it. This made for a fun match here. Too bad it was over pretty fast, but there was a lot of great spots here to look out for. My personal favorite was the counter to the Destroyer to a powerbomb followed by a pin. From the annoyed look on Petey's face, this isn't over by a long shot.

After all of the hot water Swann found himself in last year, I'm glad to see him enjoying wrestling again. He's definitely right at home in the X-Division.

Update following Little Richie getting run over by the OGs

I had a few friends ask me what I thought about this last week, but I didn't see it live at the time and didn't catch up on the past two weeks worth of Impact Wrestling until earlier this week, so I'll give my thoughts now. The kid getting run over was a little in bad taste BUT it's entertainment. I've lost track of the death toll on Lucha Underground this season and you don't see anyone moaning about that. Glad to hear that the kid is okay, but watching it at the time didn't bother me in the least. As long as we're not doing stupid shit like 12 year old Izzy taking chokeslams on the indies then I'm fine with this for the sake of the storyline.

Austin Aries and Killer Kross def. Eddie Edwards

Moose allegedly assaulted backstage before the start of this match, so this match was started as a handicap match instead. Surprisingly enough, "crazy" Eddie Edwards was able to hold his own for most of this match until the numbers game caught up to him. Moose raced down to the rescue, only to turn on his alleged best friend Eddie Edwards.

I'm sorry but this didn't make a lick of damn sense to me. Aries was the one who gave Moose a concussion at Slammiversary and prevented him from becoming the new Impact World Champion. Did that Brainbuster scramble his brains or something? It makes no sense to me on why Moose would align with Aries and Kross. At this rate, I honestly can't see who is going to overthrow Aries unless they pull the Pentagon/Sami Calihan stuff into the main event picture. You could have Eli Drake somehow find his way back into the title picture, but I think that ship has sailed at this point. I wasn't crazy about this finish at all, but I won't pass final judgment on this until I see how they follow up with this on tonight's episode of Impact. From a narrative standpoint, I did like the final shot of Alisha Edwards coming out and slapping the taste out of Moose's mouth for his betrayal though. Shows that no matter how far off the deep end her husband has gone, she's still standing by his side.

IMPACT Wrestling vs. Lucha Underground At WrestleCon (April 6, 2018) -- Results & Afterthoughts

As part of WrestleMania weekend and the ongoing WrestleCon annual convention, both IMPACT Wrestling and Lucha Underground talent faced off in this event streamed live and FREE on Twitch TV on Friday, April 6, 2018. The entire event can be viewed in its entirety here on Video on Demand on Twitch TV at the link below.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/247553403

Even though it seemed like it was awkward at first with the crowd trying to bury Impact Wrestling's brand at first, the crowd eventually came around after some coercing from Melissa Santos and Mckenzie Mitchell sharing ring announcing duties for the night. If I may add, the baby weight on Melissa is a great look on her and makes her look juicy in the right places. Lord, have mercy for her in this upcoming season of Lucha Underground.

Matanza defeated Moose, Matt Sydal, Caleb Konley, Jack Evans, and Chavo Guerrero Jr. in a six-way match

This would end up being Jack Evans' last match for Lucha Underground after he (along with Angelico) tweeted that he was done working for the promotion. I have no idea if that means he's not in Season 4 or what, but sucks to see him go. I wonder what's going to happen to Mundo's Worldwide Underground faction in Season 4 then. Chavo took the mic and treated the crowd to this teaser for the next season of Lucha Underground following this match:

As for this match, it was a fun start to this show. We got to see everyone clash at one point or another, but the most fun interaction for me was Matanza and Moose sizing each other up. That didn't last for long until Matanza tossed everyone around like lawn furniture and picked up the win promptly.

Knockouts Champion Allie defeated Taya Valkyrie to retain her title

I can't remember but isn't this their first encounter here in Impact Wrestling? I mentioned this on social media during my #IMPACTonPop live discussions, but why do people keep giving Taya shit on her weight gain? Thickness is a great look on her - much better than look she had in the last two seasons of Lucha Underground. In that case, I blame their lighting on making everyone look like they are tanning worse than Hulk Hogan. Seeing this match made me immediately think of the lack of Rosemary (or better yet no Catrina, Ivelisse, nor Black Lotus...) on this card in terms of femme fatales to represent both the Impact and Lucha Underground brands. Allie and Taya had a pretty average match here and that's fine, given everything else going on this show.

Scott Steiner & Teddy Hart defeated oVe (Dave & Jake Crist)

It still blows my mind that both Scott Steiner and Teddy Hart were tag team on this card, let alone on this card PERIOD. For those who don't know, Teddy's been on a mission to revitalize his career and repair the damage to his reputation in the business with a fresh start. TJ Wilson (AKA Tyson Kidd/Natalya's husband) even went as far as tweeting out some kind words for his fresh start and asking his peers in the business to give him a second chance to redeem himself.

We've seen a lot of craziness from oVe over the last few months in their feud with LAX, so this match was pretty tame in comparison. Hell, Teddy wasn't even doing anything crazy like I remember from his Wrestling Society X days.

King Cuerno, Drago & Aerostar defeated Andrew Everett, Dezmond Xavier & DJZ

This was my second favorite match of the night, just from all of the talent involved. Impact could sign all of these guys from Lucha Underground tomorrow and run a X-Division clinic on the next PPV. This is the first time I remember seeing DJZ on an Impact card in quite some time. Someone will correct me in the comments or via social media, but wasn't he dealing with an injury of some kind? I remember Dezmond Xavier won that X-Division tournament they had last year to face Ishiimori in a short feud, but I don't remember seeing him much on TV tapings afterwards. It's a damn shame too to say that guy is hella talented. Wouldn't be surprised if WWE swoops in with an offer for him to join 205 Live once his contract is up.

Trevor Lee (w/ Caleb Konley) defeated Marty The Moth (w/ Famous B)

Marty the Moth being Famous B's partner was a pleasant surprise, but this match wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be. I did get a good laugh at Melissa Santos running out of the way AS SOON as he was announced given their history on Lucha Underground. Too bad we didn't get Dr. Wagner Jr. and Beautiful Brenda along for the ride too. I honestly was shocked that Marty took the L here, but then again, I'm not given that Trevor Lee always seems to be booked strong throughout his tenure in

Impact World Tag Team Champions LAX (Santana & Ortiz w/ Diamante) defeated Killshot & The Mack to retain their titles

This wasn't an Art of War match like we saw at Ultima Lucha Tres, but this was another fun match on this show. Given everything that we've seen from LAX in terms of sheer brutality with their feud with oVe, this was another tame match in comparison to that stuff, but still worth the watch.

Brian Cage defeated Eli Drake

Much like every other match (outside the one with Lashley) he's had since arriving in Impact Wrestling, Cage ended this in a promptly manner. There wasn't a second I believed that Drake was going to pull out a win here. He put up a good fight, but we all knew where this was going the second the bell rung.

Jeremiah Crane (Sami Callihan) defeated Eddie Edwards in an I Quit match

I busted out laughing at the spot where Eddie called Crane by his NXT name to piss him off. Yeah, we were all mad at that wasted opportunity there. At least Callihan is doing better for himself now, much like Edwards here after getting the shaft from NXT. After what transpired in their match a few weeks ago on Impact that drew all of the media attention from the botch that caused Sami smash Eddie's orbital socket with a baseball bat, I thought they would have given the win to Eddie here. Color me surprised on that one. I guess Impact wants to continue riding that heel heat for Sami until their upcoming Redemption PPV for Eddie to finally get his comeuppance for Sami's actions.

Pentagon Jr. defeated Austin Aries and Fenix in a triple threat match

It is worth noting that the main event for the event had been set to be a tag team match with Alberto El Patron teaming with Austin Aries to face Pentagon Jr. and Fenix, but El Patron did not show at the event. At this time there has been no explanation offered as to why the Mexican star did not show at the event, but one Impact Wrestling source has since claimed El Patron had become sick. El Patron is due to face Aries for the Impact World Championship at Redemption on April 22nd. Impact Wrestling came to terms and terminated El Patron from his contract by the end of the weekend after no showing another appearance on Saturday.

Good riddance if you ask me. I wouldn't have rehired him after all of that bad PR and negativity surrounding him in the first place. On top of that, the guy is a damn charisma vacuum and extremely bland. He does NOTHING to elevate their product, unlike how resigning Aries has done. To say they lost Lashley, EC3, and James Storm over whatever they were too generous paying El Patron, he wasn't worth that investment in the least.

As a result of El Patron's no showing this event, we got a MUCH better main event bout as a replacement - Austin Aries versus Fenix and Pentagon Jr. in a triple threat non-title match. IMPACT Wrestling announced later this weekend that the main event for their upcoming Redemption PPV will be a repeat of this match, but for the IMPACT Global Championship.

Lucha Underground - Season 1 Finale: Ultima Lucha Part I & II - Results and Afterthoughts

Ultima Lucha (Spanish for Last Fight) is the name of the final episodes of the first season of professional wrestling TV series Lucha Underground. The first part of Ultima Lucha, episode 38, premiered on the El Rey Network on July 29 and the two hour final episode Ultima Lucha, episode 39, is scheduled to premier on August 5, 30 on the El Rey Network. The show will later be shown in Mexico on the UniMás network in a version with Spanish commentary. The episodes will be the season one zenith of several ongoing storylines that has played out throughout the first season of Lucha Underground. As part of the season finale all three of the Lucha Underground championships were on the line in a match, including a match to determine the first ever Gift of the Gods Champion.

Backstage: Show opens with Dario dressed to kill in terms of celebrating Lucha Underground's one year anniversary event as he visits Black Lotus in her cell. The exposure to Dario's brother and solitude has made her deranged and more focused on extacting revenge on her parents' murder. Dario informs her that it wasn't his brother who killed them - it was El Drago Azteca himself. He leaves her to dwell on this new revelation.

Street Fight - "The Machine" Cage def. The Mack

What an excellent way to kick off Ultima Lucha with a lot of crazy spots and fan-interaction. Cage and The Mack went all over the crowd during this match and doesn't end until Cage curbstomps The Mack's face through a cinder block for the win. This was definitely my personal favorite match on Part 1 of Ultima Lucha.

Trios Tag Team Championship Match - The Disciples of Death (w/ Catrina) def. Angelico, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse (c)

We knew this was coming but everyone played their parts here perfectly. From Son of Havoc making a stand on his own, Angelico putting his body on the line (literally and figuratively) for the sake of the team, and Ivelisse's courage - throwing down with ALL of the Disciples and even fighting off Catrina too made this match still a joy to watch. We even almost had a potential wardrobe malfunction with Catrina's top coming undone from her catfight with Ivelisse. This was the beginning of the dark cloud that would cover the entire Lucha Underground landscape by the end of this event.

If I had any complaint about this match, it was that it felt too "short" and a little rushed.

I can't be mad at Son of Havoc, Angelico, and Ivelisse losing the titles here as they play the part of unorthodox underdogs so well that I'm sure we're going to love to see them climb back to the top next season.

Belivers' Backlash Match - Drago def. Hernandez

This was a clever way to bring back TNA's defunct match-type, "Fans' Revenge", but underneath lucha libre rules. We've seen these guys go at it several times now and while it's not much different than their last few encounters, it's good to see Drago pick up the win this time. Hernandez is allegedly out of the door after this since his deal with resigning with Impact Wrestling didn't pan out like he wanted.

Backstage: El Drago Azteca arrives to the temple, ready to rescue Black Lotus, but he's stopped by a hooded individual who challenges his abilities. The hooded man warns him of the prophecy if he enters the temple, but Azteca doesn't care about his own life - only rescuing Black Lotus. The hooded man steps aside and allows him entry as Part 1 ends.

Johnny Mundo def. Alberto El Patron

This match serves as the show opener for Part 2 of Ultima Lucha and much like the opener for Part 1, Mundo and El Patron brawled all over the temple before returning back to the ring to excite the fans in even more ways. After multiple near-falls and ropebreaks, neither man could seal the deal. Former WWE Diva and Mundo's on/off again real-life girlfriend Melina Perez made her debut at the end of this match after using the AAA Mega Championship to break El Patron's hold to allow Mundo to finish him off for the win. As great as the actual match was, it was the aftermath that was the true highlight that saw El Patron toss Mundo through the office doors like a lawndart just like Mundo did to El Patron a few months ago. I hope Johnny Mundo's alright because he was a bloody mess after that spot.

Cero Meido Match - Pentagon Jr. def. Vampiro

I had my predictions for months now, but when Vampiro showed up for this match dressed like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars crossed with the Pope Anti-Christ, I KNEW he was Pentagon Jr.'s beloved "master". The first half of this match serves as an endurance contest to see how high is Vampiro's pain threshold while the later half is Vampiro returning the favor to Pentagon Jr. If you love the "deathmatch" style of hardcore matches then you're going to love this bloodbath. Thumbstacks, multiple light tubes, and even a flaming table are all part of the action in this crazy match. Both wrestlers end up a bloody mess by the time it's all said and done.

As predictable as the reveal was about Vampiro being Pentagon Jr.'s master was, the live crowd bought into every second of this match all the way up to the point where Vampiro refered to Pentagon Jr. as his "son". I'm VERY anxious to see where they go from here with this angle.

Backstage: El Drago Azteca arrives to free Black Lotus from her prison but Dario Cueto stops him in his tracks as he prepares to unleash his brother on Azteca. Instead, Black Lotus grabs Azteca from behind and slays him herself, extacting the revenge that she has craved for so long. Dario warns her of the war that she started and offers to protect her as they motion to flee the temple as Dario mentions a "new temple".

7-Way Match for the Gift of the Gods Championship - Fenix def. Jack Evans, Big Ryck, Bengala, Aerostar, King Cuerno, and Sexy Star

I'm not saying this was a bad match, but if you've seen a lot of these matches with a ton of people in them throughout the season, you know what to expect - lots of high-flying spots, some occasional teamwork, and a flashy finish. One thing I do give Lucha Underground major props on in these kinds of matches is that they make sure EVERYONE (no matter how high or low on the totem pole) gets a chance to shine.

No Disqualification Match - Blue Demon Jr. (w/ The Crew) def. Texano

If anything, this was the only "bad" match on this card as it was a complete "throwaway" match. I would've had this on that show "before" Ultima Lucha and gave more time to some of the other matches on the undercard, especially the Trios Tag Team Match. Texano jobs to Blue Demon Jr. and the Crew in a promptly fashion in a means to establish Blue Demon Jr.'s new-found partnership with Chavo Guerrero.

It seems like Lucha Underground is establishing some more trios teams and more forces at play to challenge Dario Cueto in the next season. That's the other reason I can justify this match being on the card.

Lucha Underground Championship Match - Mil Muertes (w/ Catrina) def. Prince Puma (c)

From bell-to-bell, this was the match of the evening and definitely lived up to the hype. Prince Puma (Ricochet) put up a valiant effort but Mil Muertes wouldn't stay down. I loved the how Catrina kept raising the stone up into the air and that would symbolically help Mil keep kicking out of Puma's offense that would have usually put most of his challengers away in the past.

Backstage: Cliffhanger teaser showing several luchadors leaving the temple

  • Black Lotus, Dario Cueto, and his brother flee the temple together in a van
  • Fenix riding off in a Firebird sports car with the Gift of the Gods Championship followed by an unknown figure wearing a cowboy hat driving a pick-up truck
  • Sexy Star tied up to a chair after being kidnapped by Marty "The Moth" Martinez, taunting her that he won't be a laughing stock after she meets his "sister"
  • Drago and Aerostar respectfully depart the temple, both agreeing to meet again in honorable combat
  • Angelico and Son of Havoc vow to reclaim the Trios Tag Team titles. Ivelisse and Son of Havoc agree to ride together one more time
  • Pentagon Jr. asks his master what shall they do next, only for Vampiro (dressed even more like Emperor Palpatine as he stood next to his apprentice) to reply that they will go to an even "darker" place.
  • A new luchador picks up and dons the mask of the fallen El Drago Azteca and spraypaints a "?" onto the Lucha Underground billboard looking over the city.
  • Scene ends with a shot of Dario Cueto leaving the temple behind as all of the lights go out and fade to black with the words "To be continued..." left on the screen.

So Where Do We Go From Here?

(Sobs uncontrollably) Why do the things that I love in professional wrestling always have to go away? As it stands with current posting date of this article, there's no signs of Lucha Underground being picked up for a second season anytime soon. This is mainly due to the allegedly 20 million dollar budget they spent on the premiere season and if you ask me, it was money well spent. The problem with Lucha Underground is that they aren't a traveling wrestling promotion but simply a television show, so they can't garner any additional revenue, unless AAA wants to continue just funding them to continue garnering additional exposure for this new outlet to introduce non-Mexican fans to their product.

As for the event itself as a whole, I'm glad that Ultima Lucha was split up into two parts. The undercard was pretty much the bulk of Part 1 with all of the high-profile matches in Part 2 (save for that Blue Demon Jr. vs. Texano match that really didn't seem to live up to the hype IMO but we needed something as the piss break match before the main event). Even if this ends up to the only season of Lucha Underground, Ultima Lucha stands as the reward and payoff point for a year's worth of stellar wrestling matches and masterful storytelling of this narrative.

Whoever cooked up Black Lotus' storyline deserves a raise and a standing ovation as she has one of the best wrestling storylines (especially for a woman in this sport) like EVER to say that she hasn't even wrestled one match at all for the company. The way how this first season played out in terms of storylines being slowly hinted at and sprinkled along throughout the entire year reminded me of back the WWF years (Hogan's glory years) to Attitude Era, where WWE built major feuds over the course of a year before having them come to that climactic finale at WrestleMania. In this case, that WrestleMania was Ultima Lucha and I crave for wrestling as a whole to go back to this style of booking. I know that most promotions nowadays don't do this in fear of injuries or anything else major happening over the course of a year, but this style of storytelling allows fans to invest more emotion into the feuds and story over a long time instead of rushing to build a major feud in 2-3 weeks between Pay-Per-Views.

As for the teasers, I have a few predictions on what the closing tidbits may mean for the possible second season. First of all, Black Lotus' story will continue but I think we will see her transform into a heel character after being corrupted by Dario Cueto that would be similar to Karai in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lore that is only "bad" due to the circumstances of her upbringing and her own code of honor and loyalty to what Dario has done to protect her. I think that Fenix is being pursued by the hunter, King Cuerno, the man who hasn't managed to catch his prey all season. I think he will have a fruitful hunt in the second season with his eyes on Fenix's newly won title. With Sexy Star being kidnapped by Marty the Moth, I think his "sister" is going to be Cheerleader Melissa since it was reported that she reportedly signed a deal to work with the company. As a HUGE fan of Melissa, I'm more than happy at that news. My other guess for the identity of Marty's sister would be Mercedes Martinez but that would be a stretch to say that she hasn't ever been in a mainstream promotion despite her stellar work on the indies for the last decade. With Son of Havoc and Ivelisse riding together "one more time", I think that they are going to iron out their differences and emerge as a couple and a stronger team again in the next season. Angelico might be the third wheel but it seems like the trio like hanging around each other. Vampiro and Pentagon Jr. leave together to conquer new plateaus from the realm of darkness - without a shadow of a doubt, I'm sure that they will have their eyes on title scene next season or even possibly join forces with Mil Muertes to cause even more suffering to the individuals in Lucha Underground. Last but not least, a new El Drago Azteca will be hunting Dario and Black Lotus throughout next season as they will flee to a new temple as Dario left nothing behind of his former glory. The ideal situation would be to film the next season on the road at various live events to garner more revenue and don't settle on a new locale until the end of the season.

As it stands, I have my fingers crossed that Lucha Underground gets the greenlight for another season. There's so much more that Lucha Underground can do for the wrestling industry today - it was the best hour long weekly broadcast, with matches and storylines that blew their competition out of the water on a consistent basis. Sorry, NXT and ROH, but Lucha Underground made them look pathetic in comparison. If this is the last we see of Lucha Underground, I want to say "adios mi amigo" it was a splendid ride with you guys from start to finish.
