Clint Barton aka Hawkeye joins Marvel's Avengers as an unlockable character. Check out this Hawkeye gameplay footage along with the details on his story, comics inspriation, and more.
Last but not least, Sony revealed on a lengthy PlayStation.com post that Spider-Man will be joining Marvel's Avengers as a console exclusive playable hero post-launch.
Boy, people aren't happy about that. I look at it like this - Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man and it's a natural fit for them to take advantage of that. (Laughs) I'm finding it hilarious that people are quick to forget that Microsoft (along with Sony) pulled the same stunt for Marvel Ultimate Alliance to have exclusive heroes and villains for DLC post-launch. So fuck that noise about everyone suddenly up in arms about this like it's never happened before. If you want to play as Spider-Man in video games then you should know by now to pick up a PlayStation, especially when it comes to the PS4 Spider-Man game and it's PS5 sequel featuring Miles Morales. Now you can add Marvel's Avengers to that list too.
Some screenshots from the email I received from Square Enix about the game...
I still hate to sound like a Debbie Downer when it comes to this game, but I'm STILL not sold on the visuals and character models/designs for this game. Some of this is looking more "polished" than it did when they first debuted this game at E3 last year, but that's not saying much. It looks like they TRIED to make this into a MCU-based game and was told to scrap that idea at the tail end of development, only to go with piss poor fill-ins to boot. I doubt they are going to change much when one of the key selling points of the game is customizing the heroes to players' own specifications, so it's not going to matter at all what their "default" appearances look like when there will be a wealth of gear/cosmetic skins to change what they look like. That just comes across as very lazy and half-assed in terms of a development standpoint to me.
As a game designer, you should want to have your best work first and foremost when players first pick up your game to garner a strong first impression, NOT with this false promise of hoping of grinding to get something better in terms of appearances by an artificial barrier, whether it be from grinding in-game content or via loot boxes or paying for better skins. Fortunately, the developers have stated that all post-launch content will be FREE as long as players have purchased the initial base game. I'm definitely going to be trying out the open beta on PlayStation 4 since I'm not going out of my way to pre-order this. Don't get me wrong. The actual gameplay looks fun, but I was hoping for a bigger scope in terms of the roster when they say the Avengers, yet they CLAIM that they aren't influenced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one look at the base roster to start things off, you can see that's painfully false. The only newcomer is Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, who I wouldn't be surprised that joins the new Avengers roster by the end of Phase 4. Hawkeye and Spider-Man's additions are cool, but nothing that really blows me away that makes me go "OMG" I have to play this. Maybe that will change when the open beta rolls around and I actually get my hands on the game.
In that regard, I guess we won't have to wait for long as the beta starts later this month.
